On October 10, the Coltrane family and Ars Nova Workshop, with support from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, will host a public celebration at the John Coltrane House at 1511 North 33rd Street in Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood.
The event marks the launch of a long-awaited restoration and revitalization project for the National Historic Landmark, where Coltrane lived from 1952 to 1958. During these years, Coltrane studied with Philadelphia teacher Dennis Sandole, toured with Earl Bostic and Johnny Hodges, and joined Miles Davis’s “First Great Quintet.” In 1957, he returned to the house to overcome addiction and experienced a spiritual awakening that gave rise to his first masterpiece, Blue Train.
The October 10 event will feature live music, tributes from cultural leaders, and a public unveiling of plans to restore the house as a center for education, community, and creative programming.
That evening, Ravi Coltrane joins us at Solar Myth with his trio, featuring Grammy-awarded multi-instrumentalist, bassist and educator, Anthony Tidd and the incomparable drummer/composer Timothy Angulo.
