SOUND TYPE: Burnt Pink x John Morrison

November 14 @ 8:00 pm
$20

SOUND TYPE 2025 will close with Burnt Pink, born in 2018 when longtime friends Chris Acree (Strange Parts, Upholstery), Corey Carris Duncan (Pattern Is Movement, Oh! Pears, Strange Parts) and Martin Khoa Sweeney (MegaMega) began performing improvised live scores at the Art Dept in Philadelphia. A few short months later, the mind meld was complete when Martin’s brother Mark Pham (aka Swarvy), visiting from LA, joined.

They improvised and recorded a soundtrack to Stan Brakhage’s Dog Star Man, music which would comprise their first LP, Afterlife Dub. Since then, they have continued to release more improvised ‘rugged healing music’ and live recordings at a breakneck pace, including most recently, Perfectionist, a 7-track album recorded in a single session on Chris’ birthday. Burnt Pink was emphatically handpicked by guest writer John Morrison.

John Morrison is a DJ, radio host, and music journalist, covering Philadelphia’s music scene for over 25 years. Morrison is currently working on a history of Hip-Hop sampling presentation for The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music and writing a comprehensive biography of Philadelphia R&B legends, Boyz II Men. Stay tuned for more information about the public seminar!

SOUND TYPE Music Festival is a multi-part series of live concerts and public seminars that pair musicians with writers to reflect on music practice and critical feedback pushing against category, form and stereotype. Join us at all five groundbreaking and genre-defying live events and discussions through 2025!
