SUMMARY:Instruments That Talk Back: Celebrating the Legacy of Don Buchla
DESCRIPTION:Instruments That Talk Back will be a seven-month celebration of the work of Don Buchla\, a pioneering electronic instrument designer who revolutionized music technology with unconventional touch- and motion-sensitive interfaces and instruments that blurred the line between human and machine. The exhibition is scheduled to open on September 19\, 2026 and will close on April 17\, 2027 with a special event commemorating what would have been Buchla’s 90th birthday. \nEMEAPP and the Museum of Music Technology will be setting up a special physical exhibit highlighting our collection of rare Buchla instruments as well as several additional pieces on loan to us. Many of the instruments in the exhibit will be operational so visitors can see\, hear\, and interact with them. \nWe are excited to present a robust schedule of in-person programming to accompany this exhibition. To learn more and register for in-person tickets\, please click the links at the bottom of each event. Some events are still pending final confirmation from the artist and do not currently have registration links. Links to register for those in-person tickets will be added as programs are finalized over the next few weeks. \nPlease note that admission to most in-person events is free of charge but donations are both welcome and encouraged! (Lectures/workshops are always free. A small booking fee will be added to free concerts/performances to help cover ticketing costs and minimize no-shows.) Seating is limited\, so please only register for events that you will definitely attend. If you have registered but find you are unable to attend\, please let us know so we can make your seats available to others. \nAll events will be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend in person. Links to register for the livestreams are also provided below. Registration puts you on the list to receive the livestream link\, which will be emailed out approximately 10-15 minutes prior to the event. All times are US Eastern time zone.

SUMMARY:Bow and Arrow (Lea Bertucci + Michael Behari) & Angel Meat (Anna Young + Myles Donovan)
DESCRIPTION:Bow and Arrow (Lea Bertucci & Michael Behari): \nBow and Arrow is the newly formed duo project of experimental composer Lea Bertucci (voice\, electronics\, flutes) and virtuoso guitarist Michael Beharie. This project takes cues from the obscure corners of western early music\, flamenco\, folk traditions and contemporary experimental music. Bow and Arrow is devotional music for the age of alienation. \nLea Bertucci is an experimental musician whose works revolve around electronic and spatial extensions of instrument and voice. In addition to her longstanding practice performing with woodwinds\, she has created compositions for strings\, brass\, percussion and other instruments\, often incorporating electronics and multichannel sound. With an ear toward site-responsiveness and acoustics\, her work has expanded toward installation and non-linear presentations of her music\, often staged in hyper-resonant spaces. \nHer discography spans over a decade\, with eight full-length solo albums and a number of collaborative projects. She has released on a number of labels including Astral Spirits\, Room40\, American Dreams and Dinzu Artefacts. In 2018 and 2019\, she released solo albums Metal Aether and Resonant Field on NNA Tapes\, and has since founded her own label\, Cibachrome Editions\, with 2021’s A Visible Length of Light as the inaugural release. Recent collaborations include duos with Lawrence English\, Olivia Block\, Carlos Giffoni and Ben Vida\, among others. \nMichael Beharie is a musician based in New York City. His music sits at the imagined intersection between sound system culture\, pop transmission and free improvisation. \nAngel Meat (Anna Young & Myles Donovan): \nHarsh Thanatology? Post Opera? Or maybe just a Maria Callas tape eating itself alive while drinking cough syrup. Regardless\, Angel Meat is a duo from Philadelphia consisting of vocalist Anna Young (Layer Meat/Hermit High Priestess) and harpist Myles Donovan (Disemballerina/Narco Medusa/A stick and a stone) accompanied by a chaotic pet poltergeist of electro acoustic feedback. Part improv\, part song. Part structure\, part disintegration. Movements of decay\, movements of recovery. Spiritual exorcism\, shaking the bars of its fleshy prison. Authentic Queers and Phony virgins. Rising from the ashes of Antigone. Ultimately\, we’re all just Angel Meat as far as mortality goes\, and we thank you for being here. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom.

SUMMARY:Daniel Villareal
DESCRIPTION:Daniel Villarreal has long been a widely known and beloved character on the Chicago music scene\, veering between psychedelic funk\, spiritual jazz\, soul\, and the folkloric traditions of Latin America through an unmistakable sense of groove. Originally from Panama\, he fuses his pan-Latin style with influences of psychedelic rock\, Cumbia\, afro-beat\, boogaloo\, rock\, free experimental jazz\, hip-hop\, and funk to create an original contemporary soundscape. Now based in Philadelphia after years in Chicago\, Born in Panama City\, Villarreal has cultivated a singular musical language shaped by his time spent in Chicago\, and a lifelong dedication to crossing over musical traditions. \nVillarreal emerged as a distinctive bandleader with the release of Panamá 77 on International Anthem\, a critically acclaimed debut praised for its organic blend of spiritual jazz\, psychedelic textures\, and infectious sound. He expanded that vision with Lados B\, his celebrated collaboration with Jeff Parker and Anna Butterss\, further establishing himself as a composer capable of balancing spontaneity with deep musical intention. Over his career \, Villarreal has collaborated with an extraordinary range of artists\, including Joe Chambers\, Marshall Allen\, Neal Francis\, Leyla McCalla\, Charlie Hall of The War On Drugs\, Toby Leaman of Dr. Dog\, Jeff Parker\, Anna Butterss\, and the acclaimed ensemble Dos Santos. \nFor these performances\, Villarreal returns to Solar Myth for a two-night engagement featuring his Chicago-based band; featuring keyboardist Cole DeGenova\, guitarist Nathan Karagianis\, bassist John Sutton\, and percussionist Danjuma Gaskin\, plus special guests Charlie Hall (The War On Drugs) and DM Hotep (Sun Ra Arkestra). \n

SUMMARY:William Basinski / Claire Rousay
DESCRIPTION:Honoring 25 of years of the composer’s ambient masterwork ‘The Disintegration Loops’. \nWilliam Basinski is a classically trained musician and composer who has been working in experimental media for over 40 years in NYC and Los Angeles. Employing obsolete technology and analogue tape loops\, his haunting and melancholy soundscapes explore the temporal nature of life and resound with the reverberations of memory and the mystery of time. \nHis epic five-hour masterwork\, The Disintegration Loops\, received international critical acclaim and is now universally considered one of the most important and influential ambient albums of all time. The Disintegration Loops deluxe vinyl box set reissue (Temporary Residence Ltd.\, 2012) was awarded a perfect 10 score on Pitchfork. Multimedia installations and films made in collaboration with artist-filmmaker James Elaine have been presented in festivals and museums worldwide\, and his concerts are presented to sold-out audiences across the world. Basinski was chosen by Music Director ANOHNI to create music for the Robert Wilson opera\, The Life and Death of Marina Abramović\, which had its world premiere at the Manchester International Festival in July 2011 and toured Europe in 2012 and North America in 2013. Orchestral transcriptions of The Disintegration Loops by Maxim Moston have been performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Queen Elizabeth Hall\, and La Batie Festival in Geneva\, Switzerland\, Dark Mofo Festival in Hobart Tasmania\, and most recently Pitchfork Midwinter Festival with the Chicago Philharmonic. Basinski is currently touring the world in support of The Disintegration Loops — Arcadia Archive Edition\, and preparing a new album for release in late 2026\, Passing the Cup of Sorrows.

SUMMARY:Music of Laura Cetilia
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present an evening of music by Laura Cetilia from her two releases on the elsewhere label\, performed by Jack Yarbrough (piano)\, Hannah Soren (cello)\, and Laura Cetilia (cello). Works included: laminae for solo piano\, becoming of shadows for cello and piano\, and soil + stone for two cellos. \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST \nAs a daughter of mixed heritage\, Mexican-American musician\, Laura Cetilia is at home with in-betweenness\, straddling multiple worlds as a cellist / composer / educator / artist while working within acoustic / electronic / traditional / experimental sound practices. Her compositions have been described as “unorthodox loveliness” (Boston Globe) and “weightless and deeply profound” (Bandcamp’s Best Contemporary Classical). Jack Yarbrough is a pianist active in contemporary and experimental music. His idiosyncratic programming and collaborations explore the rich minutiae of touch\, resonance\, and decay. In the words of Alex Ross\, “Yarbrough’s piano seems less a physical machine than a zone of resonance.” With his duo partner\, cellist Hannah Soren\, they have worked closely with composers of nuanced music such as Linda Catlin Smith\, Makiko Nishikaze\, and Seare Farhat. Their most recent collaboration is with composer/cellist Laura Cetilia who they met during her DMA studies at Cornell University. Through New Music USA\, the duo was awarded a New Music Creator Fund to commission Laura to write a suite of new works for piano and cello and tour the Northeast in Fall 2026.

SUMMARY:Postal Pieces 3 Arcana New Music Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present the Arcana New Music Ensemble performing its third iteration of “Postal Pieces\,” a concert featuring living composers in Philadelphia and beyond composing postcard-sized works inspired by James Tenney’s unorthodox set of compositions. \nTenney’s “Postal Pieces\,” composed between 1954 and 1971\, are a series of ten concise works each printed on a postcard. These pieces capture Tenney’s exploration of sound and form\, focusing on minimalist structures\, intonation\, and what he called “Swell” forms—gradual crescendos and decrescendos that create a unique auditory experience. Conceived originally as musical “letters” to friends and collaborators\, such as Pauline Oliveros and La Monte Young\, these works reflect Tenney’s deep connections within the avant-garde music scene and his penchant for inviting listeners into meditative states of listening. \nSets of the these newly commissioned postcard works will be available for purchase at the concert\, with all proceeds benefiting the Arcana New Music Ensemble. Previous postcard sets will also be available and are available to purchase online. \nPROGRAM \nRosie Langabeer: unraveling\, the\nRichard Belcastro: Where Do We Go From Here?\nMelinda Rice: For One or More Musicians: Known\nJoshua Stamper: Pin\nJacob Cooper: Noctilucence\nJoshua Marquez: Balikbayan\nCerulean S. A student of notable figures such as Carl Ruggles\, Edgard Varèse\, and John Cage\, Tenney was a central figure in the development of post-war avant-garde music. His work often explored concepts of indeterminacy\, microtonality\, just intonation\, and the physics of sound\, integrating mathematical and acoustical theories into his compositions.\nTenney’s diverse output includes works for computer-generated sound\, instrumental ensembles\, and unconventional notations that challenge traditional musical forms. He was also a significant educator\, teaching at the California Institute of the Arts and York University\, influencing a generation of composers with his boundary-pushing ideas. His collaborations and associations with artists such as Steve Reich\, La Monte Young\, and Philip Glass positioned him as a vital connector in the experimental music scene. Tenney’s legacy is marked by his relentless curiosity and his ability to blend rigorous theoretical frameworks with an intuitive approach to sound\, profoundly shaping the landscape of contemporary music. \nArcana New Music Ensemble is a group of Philadelphia-based musicians dedicated to presenting interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional music in interesting\, beautiful\, and unconventional places. Founded in 2015\, the chamber ensemble is dedicated to contemporary classical music performing works by living composers and to reexamine music from the past\, often focusing on composers whose work has been overlooked. A hallmark of Arcana’s programming is its frequent use of portrait concerts\, which allow the ensemble to explore a composer’s work in depth. These programs balance music by widely recognized composers with works by those who are less well known or historically underrepresented.

SUMMARY:Synth Foundations (Four-Part Course) Taught by Eugene Lew and Carolyn Zaldivar Snow
DESCRIPTION:Modular synthesizers are wonderfully personal instruments: open-ended\, endlessly flexible\, and built on a few simple ideas. This four-part class starts with those foundations\, including signal flow\, voltage\, gates\, triggers\, and clocks\, then puts them to work across different kinds of music making. With extended hands-on time in the Neighborhood Sound Lab\, you’ll build patches for drones\, percussion\, loops\, and experimental soundscapes\, developing your own approach as you go. By the end\, you’ll know how to sit down at any synthesizer and make it your own. \n\nCLASS DETAILS \nThe class meets on four consecutive Tuesdays\, October 27\, November 3\, 10\, and 17\, 2026\, from 6:30 to 8:00pm in the Community Synth Studio at AMLA/Esperanza. \nThis class is 18+. Class size is limited to 10. No previous experience in music or synthesizers is required. \nAdvance ticket reservation is required to attend. \n\nQUESTIONS \nQuestions? Email SoundLab@bowerbird.org. \n\nPART OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD SOUND LAB \nThis course is one part of the Neighborhood Sound Lab\, a Bowerbird project that also offers a free community synth studio\, classes\, workshops\, and community events. The fleeting moment\, aggregate independent decision-making\, and stochastic phenomena are especially fascinating and vital to his practice and general existence. He welcomes serendipitous collaborations and treasures long-term partnerships that seek to navigate and explore the constant cycle of remembering-learning-forgetting-reconstructing. \nCarolyn Zaldivar Snow (she/her) is a field recordist and journalist whose work explores the textures of tape\, water\, and place. Her sound installations have been presented in museums and universities\, as well as in more ephemeral settings—abandoned chocolate factories\, geodesic domes\, and overgrown Victorian gardens. Carolyn helps shape conversations around sound\, and contributes to Tape Op magazine\, Mystery Circles’ editorial pages\, and The Tonearm writing about recording\, listening\, and the spaces in between. Dividing her time between Washington D.C. and Philadelphia\, Carolyn co-directs Sound Scene at Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. She recently released on Germany’s I U WE records\, and considers eurorack modular systems her primary instrument. \n  \n\n\nADDITIONAL LOCATION INFO \nFrom October through December 2026\, our Neighborhood Sound Lab will be located in AMLA Studios on the first floor (lower level) of Esperanza Arts Center\, in the Hunting Park neighborhood of North Philadelphia. SUMMARY:Jazz Philadelphia Summit 2026
DESCRIPTION:Sixty years ago\, on November 11\, 1966\, John Coltrane played a concert at Temple University that became Offering: Live at Temple University. This November 11\, we return to Mitten Hall to ask the question that night still raises: what does it mean to give\, to receive\, and to pass something on? \nThe Summit is the culminating event of the Coltrane 100 Philly centennial season and the lead event of a two-day celebration. The next evening\, a tribute concert featuring Ravi Coltrane takes place at the Temple Performing Arts Center. You don’t need to know jazz to take part. This is a conversation about community\, and everyone is welcome. \nJazz Philadelphia presents this Summit in partnership with the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection of Temple University\, whose archives bring the story of Offering home to the campus where it was recorded. \n\nWhat to Expect\n\nFirst-person Reflections. Musicians and witnesses connected to the original recording share what Coltrane and that night gave to Philadelphia\, in their own words.\nKeynote and Panel Discussion. What does this community still have to give and receive\, and what will each of us commit to offering going forward? You leave having named your own role in carrying Coltrane’s legacy.\nJohn Coltrane Exhibition. Curated by the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection of Temple University\, the exhibition draws on its archival holdings to place Offering within the arc of Coltrane’s life and Philadelphia’s jazz history.\nCommunity Resource Tables. Local partners share programs\, opportunities\, and support for Philadelphia’s music community.\n\nFeatured Voices\nThe Summit will feature a diverse range of voices from across the jazz ecosystem\, including: \n\nRenowned Artists: Gain insights from acclaimed musicians who are pushing the boundaries of jazz.\nIndustry Leaders: Learn from experts in management\, booking\, recording\, and media.\nOrganizational Representatives: Connect with representatives from leading jazz organizations and institutions.\nCommunity Advocates: Engage with passionate individuals dedicated to supporting and promoting jazz in Philadelphia.

SUMMARY:John Coltrane's Offering Revisited featuring Ravi Coltrane
DESCRIPTION:with Kris Davis\, Robert Hurst\, Terri Lyne Carrington and moreOn November 11\, 1966\, John Coltrane returned to his former hometown of Philadelphia for a performance at Temple University’s Mitten Hall that would become the stuff of legend. The concert\, which finally saw a belated release in 2014 as the Grammy-winning Offering: Live at Temple University\, took place less than a year prior to Trane’s untimely death the following July\, and channels the pain and urgency of that time into one of the most bracing and visceral of the sax giant’s storied career. Not music for the weak of heart or spirit\, the concert featured his longtime bandmates pianist Alice Coltrane\, saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and drummer Rashied Ali\, with Philly bassist Sonny Johnson subbing for Jimmy Garrison\, with a number of local saxophonists and percussionists sitting in for the occasion. The music became notorious for its harrowing ferocity and for the singular spectacle of Coltrane laying aside his saxophone to express himself through vocalizations and chest-thumping. \n“Is [Offering: Live at Temple University] an essential album?” asked JazzTimes in Steve Greenlee’s review. “By God\, it is… from this point on\, no one can claim to know Coltrane without hearing it.” \nSix decades later\, Ars Nova Workshop will return to the Temple University campus for a suitably epic commemoration. As part of the ongoing Coltrane 100 celebration of the saxophonist’s centennial\, Ars Nova will convene a once-in-a-lifetime ensemble to explore the spirit and impact of that unforgettable performance. Led by pianist and musical director Kris Davis\, the all-star band will feature saxophonist and torchbearer Ravi Coltrane\, bassist Robert Hurst\, and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington – a powerhouse ensemble uniquely suited to grappling with the ghosts and echoes of their legendary forebears.

SUMMARY:Negativland + Sue-C: Significantly Less Deceptive w/ MAZEL
DESCRIPTION:Legendary sound collage group Negativland and “real-time cinema” visual artist SUE-C collaborate to bring you their latest audio-visual performance: SIGNIFICANTLY LESS DECEPTIVE! \n“Negativland are proud subverters of culture\, causing trouble while having fun.” – NPR Tiny Desk Concert \n“Negativland have made a rewarding career out of being prodigious consumers of media who then digest it and recontextualize it\, emphasizing mediated reality’s crazy-making absurdity and the infinite malleability of perception and truth.” – Dave Segal\, The Stranger \nSince 1980\, the multimedia collective known as Negativland have been creating records\, CDs\, video\, fine art\, books\, radio and live performance using appropriated sounds\, images\, objects\, and text. Mixing original materials and original music with things taken from corporately owned mass culture and the world around them\, Negativland re-arrange these found bits and pieces to make them say and suggest things that they never intended to. In doing this kind of cultural archaeology and “culture jamming” (a term they coined way back in 1984)\, Negativland have been sued twice for copyright infringement. Their art and media interventions pose both serious and silly questions about the nature of sound\, media\, technology\, control\, ownership\, propaganda\, power\, and perception in the United States of America. Their work is now referenced and taught in many college courses in the US\, has been written about and cited in over 150 books and legal journals\, and they sometimes lecture about their work in the USA and in Europe. \nhttps://negativland.com/ \nhttps://www.instagram.com/negativlandland/ \nSue Slagle (SUE-C) is an award-winning artist\, engineer and educator whose work in “real time cinema” presents a new\, imaginative perspective on live performance. Her evolution as a new media artist began in late-90s San Francisco where she was an influential member of the electronic music scene\, owning the experimental record label Orthlorng Musork\, organizing audio-visual cultural events and teaching the first creative coding classes in Max Software. After finishing her masters degree in engineering at UC Berkeley she moved to Oakland where she became co-owner of the Ego Park gallery and helped launch the First Friday art walks. \nHer performances blend cinema and technology into an organic\, improvisational and immersive act\, created from live cameras\, light pads and video algorithms. She has always pushed the boundaries of human-computer interaction\, employing emerging technologies and inventing many of her own\, both through performance and tinkering with hundreds of students in her well-established teaching practice. She is currently a Video Designer at Meow Wolf. \nhttps://www.sue-c.net/ \nhttps://www.instagram.com/sue_c \nMazel is an experimental performer\, bending the bounds of clown\, noise\, post-opera\, ritual\, media\, pedagogy\, and speculative theology. Their show RAPTURES FROM THE GODHOLE was selected for Cannonball’s 2026 Immersive Award\, debuting September 18-20 at the Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Musically\, Mazel has been compared to avant garde icons Nina Hagen and Bjork. They’ve been described as “bonkers and sublime” … “psychotic and brilliant.” \n  \nhttps://www.instagram.com/mazel.mongrel/

SUMMARY:Adam O’Farrill’s ELEPHANT
DESCRIPTION:Still in his early 30s\, trumpeter Adam O’Farrill has earned the respect of his peers and elders alike\, not to mention music-school hopefuls who transcribe him alongside bop-era greats. The New York Times ranks him\, “among the leading trumpeters in jazz” and hails him as\, “ perhaps the music’s next major improviser.” He’s a musician of staggering technique and even deeper emotional and cultural insight\, and the jazz community has noticed. Last year alone\, O’Farrill was integral to acclaimed recordings including guitarist Mary Halvorson’s About Ghosts\, keyboard dynamo Hiromi’s Out There\, drummer-composer Tarun Balani’s Kadahin Milandaasin and his own octet project\, For These Streets.. His C.V. boasts collaborations with some of the most critically lauded musicians of the 21st century: Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Vijay Iyer\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Anna Webber\, Mulatu Astatke\, Mali Obomsawin\, Micah Thomas and more. \nWith his new quartet\, ELEPHANT\, O’Farrill surrounds himself with three rising New York-based artists who will undoubtedly shape the state of improvised music in the decades ahead. They include the pianist Yvonne Rogers\, the bassist Walter Stinson and the drummer Russell Holzman. In his review for PopMatters\, Will Layman says\, “This band and their music are beautiful and exciting\, an extension of a grand lineage. Adam O’Farrill is dancing the music forward.” \nAdam O’Farrill’s ELEPHANT \n\nAdam O’Farrill – trumpet\nYvonne Rogers – piano\nWalter Stinson – bass\nRussell Holzman – drums

SUMMARY:Resavoir
DESCRIPTION:If there’s one constant with Resavoir\, the sprawling and adventurous project from Chicago-based producer\, trumpeter\, and composer Will Miller\, it’s perpetual evolution. In the years since Miller started releasing music under the moniker\, he’s released two acclaimed self-titled LPs that masterfully merged knotty electronics with pastoral natural textures and a serene and verdant 2025 LP called Horizon co-billed with guitarist Matt Gold\, and collaborated with acts as disparate as Justin Bieber\, SZA\, and Whitney. Live\, it can morph from a 17-piece orchestra to a solo performance\, all while maintaining Miller’s keen sense for experimentation and crafting transcendent arrangements. \nThemes For Dreams\, the latest full-length from Resavoir\, is another left turn that finds Miller at his most meditative\, patient\, and intentional. The album eschews drums for immersive melodies that float\, dissipate\, and linger. It’s an album meant for rest\, with arrangements so welcomely enveloping they feel like a warm blanket. While it’s Miller’s sparsest record yet\, it’s also his most diaristic and personal effort to date.

SUMMARY:Treatise Revisited
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird presents Arcana New Music Ensemble in a second performance of Cornelius Cardew’s landmark graphic score Treatise at The Rotunda. \nLast November the ensemble performed about 20 of the score’s 193 pages. This year they take on a different set of pages\, with the score projected so the audience can follow along. \nAbout Treatise\nTreatise has no instructions\, no specified instrumentation\, and no set duration. Across its 193 pages\, a line runs above two empty staves\, and around it Cardew placed a vocabulary of shapes. Some pages suggest clefs\, staves\, and note heads\, and others give way to curves\, solid black dots\, and forms with no musical precedent. Any number of pages can be performed\, by any number of players. Realizing the score takes discussion and interpretation\, and no two performances sound alike. \nCardew worked on Treatise from 1963 to 1967\, after his years as Stockhausen’s assistant and while working as a graphic designer. His encounter with John Cage and David Tudor in 1958 had already pulled him away from European serialism toward indeterminacy\, and Treatise pushed that further than the New York School had. The title nods to Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus\, whose economy and rigor Cardew admired. The score was first published in 1967 by The Gallery Upstairs Press in Buffalo\, New York\, and in 1971 he wrote the Treatise Handbook\, a set of working notes on its composition and early performances. His most quoted line on the piece: \n“The sound should be a picture of the score\, not vice versa.” \nWithin a few years Cardew had renounced the avant-garde and its notation\, but he never withdrew Treatise from publication. It remains the best-known graphic score ever made. \nArcana New Music Ensemble\n\nNicholas Handahl\, flute\nNoa Even\, saxophone\nMelinda Rice\, violin\nCarlos Santiago\, violin\nAlyssa Almeida\, cello\nAndy Thierauf\, percussion\n\nAbout Cornelius Cardew\nCornelius Cardew (1936–1981) trained as a pianist and cellist at the Royal Academy of Music\, then went to Cologne’s Studio for Electronic Music as Stockhausen’s assistant\, working on the score of Carré. After the Cage and Tudor concert in 1958 he turned to indeterminate music\, producing The Great Learning and Treatise. In 1966 he joined the improvising group AMM\, and in 1969 he co-founded the Scratch Orchestra\, which brought trained and untrained musicians together under a “reverse seniority” ethos. \nIn the 1970s he turned to explicitly political music\, populist\, Marxist\, and Maoist in outlook\, and wrote the polemic Stockhausen Serves Imperialism. He died on December 13\, 1981\, in a hit-and-run accident; the driver was never found. \nAbout Arcana New Music Ensemble\nFounded in 2015\, Arcana is a Philadelphia chamber ensemble that presents contemporary classical music in unconventional places. It performs works by living composers and revisits music of the past\, often by overlooked composers. Arcana is known for portrait concerts\, which explore a composer’s work in depth by pairing widely recognized names with those who are lesser known or historically underrepresented.
