Battles recently debuted a composition by multiple Grammy nominee and Pulitzer Prize finalist Ted Hearne\, composed for Dynasty himself\, which was featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer. Other recent engagements include hall debuts at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in a concert curated by John Adams\, the Chicago Cultural Center’s Preston Bradley Hall as a featured artist in the International Music Foundation’s Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts\, and the Benjamin Franklin Hall with the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. Additionally\, he made his international debut at the Barbican Centre in London while in residency with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. \nCareer highlights include an invitation to perform George Walker’s Piano Sonata No. 1 in a private engagement at the distinguished composer’s home. DESCRIPTION:María Grand is a saxophonist\, composer\, educator\, and vocalist. She has performed with her ensembles all over Europe and North America; she has also played and/or recorded with creative music luminaries such as Joel Ross\, Mary Halvorson\, Antoine Roney\, Nicole Mitchell\, and more. Her debut EP “TetraWind” was picked as “one of the 2017’s best debuts” by the NYC Jazz Record and her full-length albums Magdalena\, Reciprocity\, and Anohin were praised by major publications such as the New York Times\, Downbeat\, JazzTimes\, Billboard\, JazzIz\, and others. The New York Times calls her “an engrossing young tenor saxophonist with a zesty attack and a solid tonal range”\, while Vijay Iyer says she is “a fantastic young saxophonist\, virtuosic\, conceptually daring\, with a lush tone\, a powerful vision\, and a deepening emotional resonance.” \nMaría is a recipient of the 2017 Jazz Gallery Residency Commission\, the 2018 Roulette Jerome Foundation Commission\, the 2019 Roulette Residency\, and the 2020 Jazz Coalition Commission Award\, and the 2024 Pulse Foundation Award. She was nominated for the Jazz Journalist’s Association Up-And-Coming Musician of the Year 2018 and named the 2018 Newcomer Musician for the El Intruso 11th Annual Internation Critics Poll\, as well as Best New Artist in the 2018 JazzTimes Reader’s Poll. \nIn 2022\, María was commissioned by the Metropolitan Orchestra to write a chamber piece; she composed a piece mixing elements of healing somatic practices with music titled “your very own sun”. The same year\, she also was a Women In Jazz Organization mentor\, working with a young musician to transmit her knowledge and study ways of overcoming hurdles specific to young women in the music industry. \nIn 2024\, Maria also had her debut as conductor\, directing Roscoe Mitchell’s piece Cards in Mantova\, in the presence of the composer; she also began touring as a sideman with Joel Ross’ Good Vibes. She released an album in December 2024 titled Altered Visions\, a collaborative effort with musicians Marta Sanchez\, Camila Nebbia\, Kanoa Mendenhall\, and Iago Fernandez\, on the recently formed label Lilaila Records\, and is set to release her fourth full-length album\, Both Sides\, in April 2026. \nIn 2025\, she was nominated as Best European Musician by the French Académie du Jazz and voted one of the rising tenor saxophone stars by Downbeat. She is a certified relationship consultant from the ETC school of self-development\, based in Quebec. She has a teaching studio where she teaches Music and Self Knowledge\, and recently premiered an Emotional Deep Dive where musicians and audience created a communal moment to sonically mirror and transform emotions. \nFearless percussionist Shakoor Hakeem\, a prolific up-and-coming talent\, has a gift for making experimental\, Afro-diasporan\, rhythmic improvisational music immediately enjoyable. Hakeem’s unique old soul has him adhering to the cultural traditions of mysticism and folklore\, within which are contained the secrets of his elders. The mythical experience of his stage presence evokes feelings that you are witness to a ceremonial gathering\, of an ancient rhythmic history. In building this\, he has long supported many of the most forward-thinking legendary improvisers\, including Graham Haynes\, Immanual Wilkins\, Joel Ross\, Adam Rudolph\, Bobby Zankel and Wallace Roney. Performing live with these great artists\, he refrains from overplaying and prefers minimalism\, playing with the musical and compositional contexts of colors and texture\, delivering limited solos\, all while occupying the eye of the hurricane. \n

DESCRIPTION:Thor & Friends:Polymath percussionist Thor Harris inaugurated Thor & Friends in the autumn of 2015 after five years of touring as the percussionist of iconic avant-rock ensemble Swans. The project is intended as a vehicle for experimentation with the conceptual vocabulary of American Minimalism collaborating with a rotating cast of Austin-based musicians. The ensemble’s line-up expands and contracts with the flux of compositional and improvisational contexts. Thor & Friends draws on classic Minimalist composers\, including Terry Riley and Steve Reich\, but also amalgamate such diverse influences as Brian Eno\, Aphex Twin\, Moondog and The Necks around a polyrhythmic core of mallet-struck instruments\, primarily marimba\, xylophone and vibraphone. Circling these core motifs are shifting streams of everything from processed pedal steel and analog synthesizer to violin\, viola\, stand-up bass\, clarinet\, duduk and oboe. \nHour: \nImmediate\, passionate\, occasionally dissonant\, open\, open\, open\, and very often sublime\, Ease the Work is an undeniably grand statement from the instrumental ensemble Hour. Conceived by composer\, producer\, and multi-instrumentalist Michael Cormier-O’Leary (Friendship\, 2nd Grade\, Dear Life Records) and delivered live by nine musicians in early 2023\, Ease the Work is where breathy timbre and cinematic swoon factor meet in communion. Formed in the flourishing underground of West Philadelphia in the latter half of the 2010s\, Hour has fluctuated in size and scope around Cormier-O’Leary’s clear yet open-ended harmonic framework and ambitious ear. Ease the Work builds on the bedrock of Hour’s first two records\, Tiny Houses and Anemone Red\, and represents the group at its most expansive in sound and membership. Hour’s music cuts a broad pathway\, and remains hard to classify or compare. Perhaps most at home beside work from Bill Frisell\, Eiko Ishibashi\, ECM Records\, or the Louisville experimental chamber group Rachel’s\, Ease the Work shows us life on the boundary of composition and improvisation. It reaches for the sweeping gestures and inspired pacing of classic film scores\, Frank Sinatra ballads\, and Scott Walker’s pop orchestra. It also retains the arresting intimacy of the band’s early work. Strings swell and harmonize in counterpoint with electric guitar\, clarinet\, and piano\, while drums\, synth pads\, and field recordings complete the aural world. \naccessibility: space is on the second floor up a flight of stairs.

SUMMARY:John Zorn's Flatlands
DESCRIPTION:One of the most exalted names in modern experimental music across a spectrum of styles and genres\, John Zorn is an avant-garde composer\, arranger\, record producer\, saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist whose output extends to hundreds of albums. His work has touched on a wide range of musical genres\, often within a single composition\, but he is best-known for his avant-garde\, jazz\, improvised and contemporary classical music. Zorn has led the punk jazz band Naked City and the klezmer-influenced quartet Masada\, and composed the associated ‘Masada Songbooks’\, written concert music for classical ensembles\, and produced music for film and documentary. Zorn established himself within the New York City downtown music movement in the early 1980s but has since composed and performed with a wide range of musicians working in diverse musical areas. \nZorn’s latest project\, Flatlands\, is an explosive power trio in the mold of his ferocious bands Simulacrum and Insurrection. The new supergroup brings together guitarist Matt Hollenberg of the aforementioned Simulacrum as well as Cleric and Secret Chiefs 3; bassist Simon Hanes\, who blended Italian soundtrack sounds with jazz in Tredici Bacci and whose mammoth project Gargantua the New York Times called a “masterpiece… an album of bombarding and demonic\, but at times fragile and beautiful music”; and drummer Ches Smith\, well known to Solar Myth audiences for his work with Tim Berne as well as his own projects Clone Row\, We All Break\, and Laugh Ash. DESCRIPTION:Flutists Rachel Beetz and Wilfrido Terrazas will present their latest experimental improvisational insights. \nWilfrido Terrazas (Willy/he/él) is a flutist\, improviser\, composer\, and educator based in San Diego\, originally from Ensenada\, Mexico. His work explores the edges of notation\, improvisation\, and collective creativity\, and finds inspiration in various experimentalist lineages\, Mexican folk traditions\, and poetry. He has premiered over 400 works\, composed more than 80\, and recorded 60+ albums released internationally. Wilfrido has appeared at leading festivals and venues across 23 countries\, he is a core member of Generación Espontánea\, Mexico City’s pioneering improvisers’ collective\, and co–organizes the Semana Internacional de Improvisación in Ensenada. Since 2017\, he has been a professor of music at the University of California San Diego. He is also member of the National System of Art Creators of Mexico (SNCA) for the period 2026-28. \nComposer and flutist\, Rachel Beetz experiences sound as touch. Her music “suggests the action of supernatural entities\,” (The Quietus)\, while also being a “soundtrack for a cooking show turned film noir” (Best of Experimental Bandcamp). Beetz’s sound projects have taken her from a sunless winter fjord\, to empty grain bins of the American Midwest\, and also into your kitchen. As a flutist\, Rachel Beetz plays “elegantly” (Washington Post) while “evoking the roar of prehistoric animals” (San Diego Union Tribune). She primarily performs music by living composers and works from the last century. She is a member of the group Wild Up\, Modern Current Ensemble\, and Wasteland Music. You can hear her performances on Blue Griffin\, One Sound Object\, Orenda\, Outside Time\, iikki\, Neuma\, in addition Populist records where she is a co-director alongside Andrew McIntosh and Andrew Tholl. Beetz is currently a lecturer at Moorpark College and Peabody Conservatory. \nJair-Rôhm Parker Wells : \nJair-Rohm Parker Wells is an American bassist and sound sculptor with a career spanning over four decades. He played with the influential German band Embryo and has collaborated with artists like Bob Belden\, Tony Scott\, and Karl Berger. A founding member of Machine Gun and creator of the Meeting Interdisciplinary Arts Festival in Stockholm. Born in Tacoma\, WA\, and raised in Germany\, Wells has had a profound influence on free jazz and experimental music.

DESCRIPTION:Titan to Tachyons is an instrumental experimental jazz-metal group led by New Zealand/New York composer and guitarist Sally Gates (ex-Orbweaver)\, which features Kenny Grohowski (Secret Chiefs 3\, John Zorn) on drums\, and two bassists: Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle\, Fantômas\, Tomahawk) and Matt Hollenberg (Cleric\, John Zorn). The quartet’s music depicts the realms of surrealism and science-fiction through eclectic and improvisational passages\, juxtaposed by fluid grooves and metallic flurries. The band recently released their mind-blowing second album\, Vonals\, via John Zorn’s Tzadik Records. As alluring as it is unpredictable\, the album features spaced-out free-flowing jams merged with explosive metallic outbursts\, as if the listener was watching a time-lapse video of the cosmos forming from an ominous jazz lounge in a David Lynch film.

DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present a morning birdwalk at Wissahickon Park led by Tony Croasdale with two performances by Paul Giess on trumpet and Marquise Lindsey-Bradley on clarinet. \nPlease take note of the weather and dress accordingly with appropriate footwear.\nMeet at the Wissahickon Environmental Center – Tree House. \nEstimated run time: 120 minutes\nDistance: approx. one mile\nFree admission – reservations are encouraged \nABOUT THE EVENT \nFollow the Sound is a communal outdoor listening experience that combines a guided nature walk with live music. Each ambulatory program is attuned to the here and now of its site — birds\, bugs\, water\, and wind — creating a moment of shared awareness and presence. \nFollow the Sound events are free and have been hosted at various sites throughout the Philadelphia area including John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum\, the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education\, Stoneleigh: a natural garden\, and more\, each led by a naturalist with expertise of the local ecosystem. \nEach ~90-minute program entails walking a distance of less than one mile\, usually on flat\, accessible terrain. A wide range of diverse musicians have participated on an array of flutes\, electronics\, violins\, viola da gamba\, and more\, in solo and impromptu duo formats. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nPaul Giess is a Philadelphia-based musician\, producer\, and educator whose versatile musicianship crosses traditional boundaries. Described by Downbeat Magazine as delivering “lyrical\, highly expressive trumpet work\,” Paul brings this quality to his performances with artists including Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, Grant Calvin Weston\, Yolanda Wisher\, and Guthrie Ramsey.\n2024 was a landmark year for Paul’s career. At the top of the year\, Paul was featured on Jamaaladeen Tacuma’s album “The Lighthouse” alongside Odean Pope\, Grant Calvin Weston and Marc Cary. Paul was also a featured composer for a WHYY podcast\, Philadelphia Revealed\, composing a variety of music in addition to the theme which he wrote with a long time collaborator Matthew Jernigan. Later that year\, Paul joined Jamaaladeen Tacauma’s Groove Al a Moroc at the Timitar Festival in Agadir Morocco. That same summer\, Paul joined Jamaaladeen again in his Solar System Boogie Band at the Lancaster Ave Jazz Festival in Philadelphia. Towards the end of the year\, Paul was awarded a grant from Scribe Video to help fund an oral history project he has been pursuing with Chrisitiana Jackson\, Director of African Studies at Rutgers University. By recording interviews with elders from the Philadelphia jazz scene such as Andy Aaron\, Lovett Hines\, and Cullen Knight they aim to document oral history while telling the stories of historic jazz clubs in the city. \nHis discography as leader includes “Hymns Vol. 1” (Ropeadope Records\, 2021)\, featuring vocalist V. Shayne Frederick\, and his debut “U Suite U” (2014). Most Recently\, Paul has been releasing music from live performances of a new project\, Untethered. This group explores the unknown through spontaneous creative composition using blends of sound design\, funk\, and energetic sonic interactions with veteran drummer Grant Calvin Weston alongside emerging Philadelphia talents\, Lee Clarke and Timothy Ragsdale. \nAs a composer\, Paul received the 2018 McKnight Visiting Composer Residency from the American Composers Forum. Paul held a two month residency at MSS collaborating with artists with developmental disabilities\, which culminated in a concert featuring the artists from their program. Additionally “Prayer for Mimi” appears in the Philadelphia Real Book. \nPaul’s work also ventures into the world of theatre. In December of 2015 Paul was the trumpet player in the critically acclaimed performance of the musical Black Nativity\, hosted by Theater Horizon in Norristown. Black Nativity won a Barrymore award for Best Musical Ensemble. In January of 2015 Paul traveled to New Orleans Louisiana to be the musical director for an original theater work\, “AMERICANA”. Most recently Paul produced performed and directed a two person show included in Urban Movements Arts’ offerings for the 2024 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Rubr Duki Dance Party\, is a piece of immersive theatre which guides audiences through a surreal world to help them discover their inner rubber ducky by way of drawing\, writing\, dancing\, quacking and playing with rubber duckies. \nAs an educator\, Paul teaches through Artsmart\, Mill Creek School\, and The Concept School. He came to these positions following seven years at the Philadelphia Clef Club where he served as Education Coordinator under Lovett Hines\, a prolific jazz educator. Concurrently Paul was also implementing a music program for adults with developmental disabilities at the Center for Creative Works\, establishing Pop Pop Pop Records\, and producing concerts that showcase their talents in the process. \nMarquise Lindsey-Bradley is a clarinetist\, arts administrator\, and Philadelphia native who uses music as a foundation for leadership and community service. He joined PCMS as Marketing & Engagement Director in the 2023-24 season\, where he oversees communications for its 50 annual concerts and fosters partnerships with young professionals\, higher education institutions\, corporations\, and community groups. \nMarquise also serves as the Creative Program Coordinator for the Olney Culture Lab\, of CultureTrust Greater Philadelphia\, where he curates the Live at Roots Garden concert series and the annual Jazz on the Green music festival. \nA passionate advocate for musical literacy and diversity in the arts\, Marquise has gained recognition for his work in the field. He has presented to local and national audiences through collaborations with organizations such as the LA Philharmonic\, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra\, the Sphinx Organization\, and World Cafe Live. He has also been featured on podcasts\, including The Entrepreneurial Musician with Andrew Hitz\, Audio Olney\, and Tacet No More with Yumi Kendall and Joseph Conyers. \nMarquise holds a Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music\, with a Minor in Business Management from Case Western Reserve University. In 2023\, he earned a certificate in Orchestra Management from The Juilliard School in collaboration with the League of American Orchestras. \nIn his free time\, Marquise enjoys spending time in nature\, exploring Philadelphia’s bar and restaurant scene\, and roller skating with the Philly/Jersey-based crew\, Great On Skates. \nTony Croasdale started birding at about nine years old. Tony has performed field research in the Canadian Arctic\, Alaska\, Brazil\, Peru\, and in the Mid-Atlantic. He is leader or co-leader of a plethora of working projects including Hearsay\, Ensemble Ziraph\, and Akjai \, currently performs with Kahil El Zabar and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and has performed and recorded with Avreeayl Ra\, Josh Berman\, Jim Baker\, Fred Jackson\, Ed Wilkerson\, Angel Bat Dawid\, Jason Stein\, Tom Skinner\, and many more. \nWill Greene plays guitar and saxophone and currently resides in Chicago\, after spending many years as an active member of various Brooklyn\, NY music communities. His musical practice explores time-bending\, pitch excursions\, and interactive notions. In addition to an active schedule of jazz and improvisation adjacent activities\, Will is a member of avant-thrash outfit TRIGGER\, italo-prog orchestra TREDICI BACCI\, and leads the CHICAGO MICROBES. He is also proud of and grateful for his past and ongoing collaborations that have taken him across the United States and several continents. She was spotlighted by The Chicago Reader as a “Chicagoan of Note” and included in The Chicago Sun Times “Next Generation of Jazz Musicians.” She leads her own quartet\, Heat On\, which released their debut album on Cuneiform Records. Other projects include improvisational duo with gabby fluke-mogul and playing in Ken Vandermark’s Edition Redux. Finnegan has collaborated with wide ranging artists including James Brandon Lewis\, Macie Stewart\, Bill Orcutt\, Edward Wilkerson\, Nick Dunston\, Tashi Dorji\, Lia Kohl\, Patrick Shiroishi\, Brandon Seabrook\, and Shanta Nurullah. She is a member of the Catalytic Sound Collective and co-curates the Option Series. In 2026 she became a Next Jazz Legacy awardee. \nCrowmeat Bob & Ian McColm duo: \nCrowmeat Bob is self- and friend-taught on guitar and reeds\, composes for many different kinds of ensembles\, and has played in many bands and in improvised or otherwise situations with hundreds of musicians over the years. He once saw Sonny Sharrock play at the old 930 Club. \nIan G. McColm is a multi-instrumentalist\, improviser and composer residing in Philadelphia\, PA. He has contributed drums\, synthesizer\, guitar and an array of other instruments to releases by Glasspack\, Heart of the Ghost\, Elkhorn\, Daniel Bachman\, Cartoon\, and Center. They believe percussion can embody both structure and freedom\, precision and vulnerability. \nAfter spending years apart working on their own unique voices\, they came together in 2018 to form NOMON. \nBorn and raised in Tokyo\, Japan to an Indonesian mother and an American father\, the sisters became multi-instrumentalists performing alongside their mother\, a musician and composer active in Asia and the Middle East. \nOpener: Mikel Patrick Avery \nA percussionist\, composer/improvisor\, filmmaker\, photographer\, and designer of modern pedal and electronic instruments\, artist Mikel Patrick Avery considers this multiplicity as one practice: creative problem solving. Gifted in various musical genres\, his rigorous work of performance\, improvisation\, composition\, and experimentation spans jazz\, experimental\, and electronic music. With his deep understanding of the historical and contemporary significance of various genres\, he explores the uses of improvisation to navigate uncertainty\, imagine alternative futures\, and inspire social cohesion.
