DESCRIPTION:Drum Major Instinct with Katherine Young: \nDrum Major Instinct is an experimental music duo from Asheville\, North Carolina. Jeff Arnal plays (mostly) percussion and Curt Cloninger plays (mostly) modular synthesizer. The Wire describes Jeff’s drumming as a “highly original concept” having “a balletic sense of time and imaginative deployment of colour;” and Byron Coley says Curt’s modular synthesis “moves like blocks of radioactive adobe being shifted around by architects in space suits.” But\, of course\, nothing is ever that straightforward. The resultant music is about waves of energy\, patterns within patterns (within patterns)\, sounds from the natural world\, and running the voodoo down. Their self-titled first release is on Mahakala Music (2022) and their latest 2025 LP (entitled “Almost Nothing”) is on Haunted Apparatus. \nAs a bassoonist and improviser\, Katherine Young amplifies her instrument and employs a flexible electronics setup. She performs as a soloist\, in ad hoc improvised groups\, and with projects such as Beautifulish (duo with Sam Scranton) and Architeuthis Walks on Land (duo with Amy Cimini). Her debut solo album garnered praise in The Wire (“Bassoon colossus”) and Downbeat (“seriously bold leaps for the bassoon”). She has documented her work on numerous recordings\, including her quartet Pretty Monsters self-titled debut\, a duo recording with Anthony Braxton\, and the multi-movement work “Diligence Is to Magic as Progress Is to Flight” (Parlour Tapes+) created with violinist Austin Wulliman of the JACK Quartet. Katherine is based in Atlanta\, where she teaches composition\, electronic music\, and improvisation at Emory University. In 2021\, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition. As a scholar\, she researches the incorporation of idiosyncratic electronics and improvisation in contemporary notated music. \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue.  \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.

DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with The Living Temple\, the ongoing exhibition celebrating the life and work of Swedish visual artist and designer Moki Cherry\, Ars Nova Workshop presents the Chad Taylor Quartet performing The Avant-Garde\, the 1966 album that brought together Don Cherry and John Coltrane\, at Solar Myth on Friday\, February 27. \nA composer\, scholar and educator as well as a capaciously inventive percussionist now living in Philadelphia\, Chad Taylor is best known as co–founder of the Chicago Underground Duo (and the numerous Underground iterations that have spun off of that original partnership) with trumpeter Rob Mazurek\, and as drummer for the late jaimie branch’s Fly Or Die. A professional on the Chicago scene from the age of 16\, he became a rhythmic muse for many of the most celebrated artists in improvised music\, including Fred Anderson\, Pharoah Sanders\, Nicole Mitchell\, Matana Roberts\, Ken Vandermark\, Darius Jones\, James Brandon Lewis\, Derek Bailey\, Marc Ribot\, and Peter Brötzmann. \nReleased in 1966 on Atlantic Records\, The Avant-Garde was a sign of profound respect from one jazz pioneer to another. On the landmark session\, John Coltrane plays the music of Ornette Coleman\, accompanied by the members of Coleman’s groundbreaking quartet: bassist Charlie Haden\, drummer Ed Blackwell\, and Don Cherry\, who received co-billing and whose composition “Cherryco” opens the album. Chad Taylor will explore the music of that classic album with his quartet featuring trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson of Steve Coleman’s Five Elements along with Philadelphians Bryan Rogers (tenor saxophone) and Matt Engle (bass).

SUMMARY:David Tudor at Gate Hill Tudor Talk (Online) with Mark Davenport
DESCRIPTION:David Tudor is largely remembered for his performances of mid-twentieth-century avant-garde piano music and his close association with John Cage\, but much less is known about his personal life or the intentional artist’s community he co-founded in 1954. The Gate Hill Cooperative\, established with Cage and others who had emerged from the experimental environment of Black Mountain College\, became Tudor’s home for over forty years—the place where he produced practically his entire compositional oeuvre. Tudor was only 28 when he moved to Gate Hill\, and it was there that he developed the electronic and collaborative practices for which he continues to garner international recognition. Musicologist and cultural historian Mark Davenport\, who grew up at Gate Hill\, will draw on his decade-long research project and forthcoming book Community\, Art\, Education and the Search for Meaning: From Black Mountain College to the Gate Hill Cooperative to provide rare access and insight into Tudor’s life during the formative early years of the community. DESCRIPTION:Nomad War Machine is an improvised metal duo consisting of guitarist James Reichard and drummer Julius Masri.  In 2023\, both musicians entered Baltimore’s Tempo House Recording studio with pedal steel luminary Susan Alcorn Lobato. \nThe release of the album Contra Madre (VG+ Records)\, on January 31 of 2026\, marks the one year anniversary of her passing. The Fire Museum Presents concert serves as a Philadelphia premier of sorts\, and a celebration of Susan’s undeniable creative fording into new sonic territories. February 15th\, Nomad War Machine will be joined by Brooklyn based cellist TJ Borden\, a restless improviser and explorer of tonal possibilities. TJ has performed and recorded with the Mivos Quartet\, and has released many of his own works\, both solo and collaborative. \nConcerning Contra Madre: An unexpected opportunity arose after a conversation between James Reichard and Susan Alcorn\, where she revealed a fascination with death metal\, confessing\, “I’m 70 years old\, I think about death!” She had learned Arch Enemy songs on pedal steel\, and was particularly compelled by the frontwoman’s intensity and vigor as a performer. Voicing an appreciation for the hook-oriented sound of Swedish death metal made sense for Susan whose roots as a veteran pedal steel player reached into the Western Texan swing circuit of the 60s and 70s. For Susan\, ever the explorer\, metal was a new\, appealing point of departure for her into fresh\, unfamiliar musical territory. \nThough known for her fluency in Jazz\, Country\, and free improvisation\, Susan had also studied Arabic\, the oud\, and maqam systems. Pre-70s Country & Western music had also been a lifelong presence for both members of Nomad War Machine. Julius Masri\, a Lebanese free jazz and metal drummer\, and devoted fan of Texas Swing legends like Speedy West\, Jimmy Bryant\, Leon Rhodes\, and Joe Maphis\, was also steeped in Arabic music traditions.  James Reichard\, before coming to ‘freely’ improvised metal\, xenharmonic music\, and non-western tuning systems\, had grown up being subjected to countless singalongs to numerous pre-70s country records\, entranced by the pedal steel. Susan Alcorn expressed an interest in playing with Nomad War Machine\, it felt like there was a whole world of shared or complementary interests to explore. \nEmbarker: \nEmbarker is the solo project of audio visual artist Michael Roy Barker. Mb uses a variety of electronics\, modular synthesizer\, homemade instruments\, voice and processed audio collages to create hyperkinetic\, genre-bending music that is often used as a soundtrack to found videos or as an interactive audio visual experience. He has performed widely in the US\, and has also studied at STEIM in 2007 and been artist in Residence at the Experimental TV Center in Owego NY 2006-2007.

A key member of the Sun Ra Arkestra for more than six decades and its dauntless leader for the last quarter century\, Allen has kept the iconic bandleader’s cosmic torch blazing brightly while forging a path through the spaceways as a singular voice on the alto saxophone and Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI). \nAllen has led a number of diverse incarnations of his Ghost Horizons band with guitarist DM Hotep at Solar Myth over the last few years\, highlights of which are now compiled on Ghost Horizons’ debut album for Otherly Love Records.

SUMMARY:Postal Pieces 2.0 Arcana New Music Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present the Arcana New Music Ensemble performing Postal Pieces 2.0\, the second iteration of “Postal Pieces\,” a concert featuring living composers in Philadelphia and beyond composing postcard-sized works inspired by James Tenney’s unorthodox set of compositions. \nTenney’s “Postal Pieces\,” composed between 1954 and 1971\, are a series of ten concise works each printed on a postcard. These pieces capture Tenney’s exploration of sound and form\, focusing on minimalist structures\, intonation\, and what he called “Swell” forms—gradual crescendos and decrescendos that create a unique auditory experience. Conceived originally as musical “letters” to friends and collaborators\, such as Pauline Oliveros and La Monte Young\, these works reflect Tenney’s deep connections within the avant-garde music scene and his penchant for inviting listeners into meditative states of listening. \nSets of the these newly commissioned postcard works will be available for purchase at the concert\, with all proceeds benefiting the Arcana New Music Ensemble. Previous postcard sets will also be available and are available to purchase online.

DESCRIPTION:Miramar: \nMiramar reimagines the Latin bolero and carries the torch of bolero beat—a genre that rose to international fame in the 1960s by blending nostalgic ballads with psychedelic rock\, bossa nova\, funk\, jazz\, and more. An offshoot of the acclaimed indie-salsa band Bio Ritmo\, Miramar was one of the first Latin bands to perform on NPR’s Tiny Desk and has since introduced its unique take on bolero to audiences worldwide\, releasing music on two of Brooklyn’s most iconic independent labels: Barbès and Daptone Records. Their latest album\, Entre Tus Flores\, released on the historic tropical label Ansonia Records\, was hailed by Staf Magazine (Spain) as “one of the greatest discoveries of recent years\,” and praised by Lira Magazine (Sweden) as “crazy\, updated\, odd – and irresistible. \n”Miramar’s undeniable magic lies in the chemistry between vocalist-songwriter Rei Álvarez and the “gran voz de la diva\,” Laura Ann Singh. Their “heartbreaking vocals suck in every nerve” (Lira)\, and they “harmonize with such precision and grace that it’s hard to imagine a day when they didn’t sing together” (Style Weekly). The Álvarez–Singh duo is supported by a lush\, dreamlike soundscape arranged by bandleader Marlysse Simmons-Argandoña\, who alternates between piano and combo organs. As a full band\, Miramar also includes Gary Kalar on electric guitar\, Giustino Riccio on percussion\, Dan Martinez on bass and occasional collaborates with string quartets and symphony orchestras. Its core members and collaborators are based between Richmond\, San Juan\, and Brooklyn. \nvenue is wheelchair accessible.

DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present an online talk with John Driscoll and Phil Edelstein\, hosted by exhibition co-curators You Nakai and Dustin Hurt. \nJohn Driscoll and Phil Edelstein are founding members of Composers Inside Electronics (CIE)\, a collaborative group formed in 1973 that has been central to the evolution and continuation of David Tudor’s Rainforest works. In this conversation\, they trace the remarkable trajectory of Rainforest from its origins as a 1968 sound score for Merce Cunningham’s dance to its transformation into Rainforest IV\, a groundbreaking performed installation where each collaborator designs and constructs sculptural loudspeakers that become instruments in themselves. Driscoll and Edelstein will discuss the collaborative workshop in New Hampshire that birthed Rainforest IV\, the research into rotating speakers and directional sound that emerged from their work together\, and how they have continued to develop Tudor’s vision in the decades since his passing. This includes their creation of Rainforest V\, a self-running installation version that has been acquired by institutions including MoMA and has introduced Tudor’s radical approach to sound sculpture to new audiences worldwide. The conversation offers rare insight into what it means to sustain and evolve a collaborative artwork across generations while honoring its original spirit of experimentation and shared discovery. \n\nThis online program starts at 6:00pm Eastern US time as a Zoom Webinar.
