SUMMARY:Laraaji - solo set
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia-born and New Jersey-raised\, Laraaji has pursued spiritual transcendence through music since the mid-1970s. After years of developing an aesthetic shaped by Eastern philosophies and transcendental research in his longtime Harlem home\, Laraaji’s breakthrough came when Brian Eno discovered him busking in Washington Square Park in 1979\, improvising celestial meditations on his electric zither. This encounter led to a collaboration on Eno’s influential Ambient series\, resulting in the 1980 album Day of Radiance. \nSince then\, Laraaji has become a defining figure in new age and ambient music\, known for his commitment to hand-crafted sounds over synthesizers and his embrace of a human presence in his performances. Whether playing monochord instruments\, singing\, or using electronics-kissed percussion\, his music remains rooted in a cosmic African-American tradition. His soundscapes are as hypnotically beautiful as they are rich with moments of tension and dissonance\, bringing depth to his trance-inducing explorations. For over four decades\, Laraaji’s work has continued to evolve\, inviting listeners into deep states of reflection while remaining grounded in a deeply personal musical journey.

SUMMARY:Irreversible Entanglements present Organic Music Society
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with The Living Temple\, the ongoing exhibition celebrating the life and work of Swedish visual artist and designer Moki Cherry\, Ars Nova Workshop presents the Philadelphia-born free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements\, exploring the ecstatic  music of Don Cherry’s groundbreaking Organic Music Society at Solar Myth on Saturday\, March 28\, 2026. \nIrreversible Entanglements are a liberation-oriented free jazz collective formed in early 2015 by saxophonist Keir Neuringer\, poet Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother) and bassist Luke Stewart\, who came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event organized after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD. Months later the group added trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes. Though free jazz with voice is an uncommon approach in the modern day landscape of the genre\, the spirit and subject the band channels and explores represent a return to a central tenant of the sound as it was founded – to be a vehicle for Black liberation. As Joshua Minsoo Kim wrote in the Chicago Reader\, “Irreversible Entanglements will leave you shaken.” \nFor this special performance\, the band will explore the pioneering music of Don Cherry’s landmark 1972 double album Organic Music Society. The recording\, which presaged the “world music” movement and its fusion of global traditions with jazz\, was an outgrowth of the community of like-minded musicians that Don and Moki Cherry convened in the town of Tågarp\, Sweden. Writing for Dusted\, Dan Ruccia hails the album as nothing less than “the sound of utopia\, of equality\, of the universal egalitarian dream\, of the earth\, the water\, and the life force in all its various guises.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Caroline Davis\, Christian Mirande/ Carrie DeCunzo Mirande Duo
DESCRIPTION:Caroline Davis: \nAlive with nurturing visions of simple sonic offerings to morph our present situation\, Caroline Davis’ main reason for playing music is to connect with others\, beckoning new vistas among curious listeners. Her musical journey began in Singapore\, in a humid climate\, hearing sounds underwater that she would recreate by singing to her German shepherd dogs\, who treated her as their own. Her family moved to the United States\, Atlanta\, Georgia\, around age 6\, where she encountered R&B and gospel music rife with horns that called her to choose the saxophone 6 years later. \nToday\, Caroline’s music covers a wide range of styles\, owed to this shifting environment. As a leader\, she has released eight albums: Live Work & Play (2012)\, Doors: Chicago Storylines (2015)\, Heart Tonic (2018)\, Alula (2019)\, Anthems (2019)\, Portals\, Vol. 1: Mourning (2021)\, Alula: Captivity (2023)\, and Portals\, Vol.2: Returning. Her active projects include jazz-leaning Portals\, experimental R&B My Tree\, and protest band Alula. She has won Downbeat’s Critic’s Poll Rising Star Alto-Saxophonist (2018) and has been included in numerous Reader and Critics Polls. Her work has garnered much praise from NPR\, The Wire\, DownBeat\, and many international publications. \nDavis is active as both a side-person and a leader in a diverse set of expressions. Davis has shared the stage with Lee Konitz\, Rajna Swaminathan\, Michelle Boulé\, Angelica Sanchez\, John Zorn\, Bari Kim\, Wendy Eisenberg\, The Femme Jam\, Matt Mitchell\, Terry Riley\, Miles Okazaki\, and Billy Kaye. \nChristian Mirande & Carrie DeCunzo Mirande duo: \n“Some significant AOTY noise circling around this one. We’ve only just stepped into May so i’ll withhold my judgment for a few more months\, but some records do capture the imagination straight out the gate and Christrian Mirande’s latest\, a first time vinyl release for Regional Bears no less\, certainly feels like a contender. No surprise\, really\, considering Mirande’s history with some of the US underground’s finest institutions – Hanson\, Recital\, Ascetic House et al – though Beautiful One Day\, Perfect the Next does feel especially rounded and sharply conceived. We’ve a record of two halves\, the first side a series of shortform musique concrete digressions built from voice notes\, tape manipulations\, and some fluid\, abstract bass playing that had me thinking of that great Kontakta album snapped off into miniatures\, while the second is a totemic singular piece that’s a bit of a sui generis moment for Mirande. 15 minutes of chiming electronics and swirling ambience\, fretless bass\, and synthesised spoken word that makes unavoidable nods to Robert Ashley/Blue Gene Tyranny\, and recalls the conceptual application of James Ferraro circa NYC\, Hell 3am\, all whilst retaining a refreshing accessibility. There’s also some particularly effective interplay between the processed and the organic\, like the sound of the mulch of synthetic soil or swaying of plastic grass\, a venturing of some kind into the uncanny valley where Mirande’s lopsided world is captured in a fairground mirror.”-World of Echo \nCarrie DeCunzo Mirande is a computer musician\, pianist\, vocalist\, and video and installation artist. Her work deals with social and ecological ethics\, and she incorporates visual language and theater into her compositional and performance practice. \nShe has performed and released music under the monikers beautywork\, Natural Pleasures\, and Carrie Ford. She has released on Hold Tapes\, No Rent Records\, Love is the Law\, Sprawl Tapes\, American Damage\, and KSX Solutions. \nShe received an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College and studied geography and political ecology at the University of Vermont. She grew up in the the Adirondacks and currently lives in Philadelphia\, PA where she teaches privately.

SUMMARY:Book Launch: The Composer’s Black Box with Ted Gordon
DESCRIPTION:Ted Gordon presents his new book The Composer’s Black Box: Making Music in Cybernetic America (University of California Press\, 2025)\, which examines how human musicians and their electronic musical instruments negotiate agency\, creativity\, and selfhood through cybernetic pathways of control. Through five historical case studies—chapters on early cybernetic electronic systems developed by Morton Subotnick\, Donald Buchla\, Pauline Oliveros\, Alvin Lucier\, and Sun Ra—Gordon’s book develops a concept of “ex-composition” that accounts for experiences of playing with instruments that play themselves\, and the consequences those experiences hold for understanding the musical self in an increasingly informational world. The presentation will also include a reading and improvised performance with a small Buchla modular electronic music system\, one of the instrumental systems examined in the book.

DESCRIPTION:  \nLondon-born Shabaka earned widespread renown as a saxophonist with his cosmically-oriented ensembles Shabaka and the Ancestors\, Sons of Kemet and The Comet Is Coming before taking an indefinite hiatus from the instrument and dedicating himself to the flute. For his flute-forward album Perceive its Beauty\, Acknowledge its Grace\, Shabaka tapped into a remarkable cadre of players\, including percussionist Carlos Niño\, bassist Esperanza Spalding\, vocalists Saul Williams and Lianne La Havas and fellow flute explorer\, OutKast co-founder André 3000. \nIn its review of the album\, Pitchfork declared that Shabaka had\, “remade his music from the ground up… The incarnation may be new\, but the music’s underlying spirit\, its animating force\, is very much the same.” Ars Nova Workshop is thrilled to host this modern innovator for two performances certain to be mesmerizing\, rapturous and exploratory.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Victoria Shen (Evicshen)
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Shen (A.K.A. Evicshen) is a sound artist\, experimental music performer\, and instrument-maker based in San Francisco. Shen’s sound practice is concerned with the spatiality/physicality of sound and its relationship to the human body. Her music features analog modular synthesizers\, vinyl/resin records\, and self-built electronics. Eschewing conventions in harmony and rhythm in favor of extreme textures and gestural tones\, Shen uses what she calls “chaotic sound” to oppose signal and information\, eluding traditionally embedded meaning. \nHer personal identity; her body; is the space her work utilizes to restructure sonic meaning. In her live performances\, she proposes an exploration between meaning and non-meaning through the physical activation of noise tropes. Her probing into these melodic voids interrogate the ways we perceive value within aural experiences. The appendage-like instruments and objects she makes exemplify Shen’s ability to embody through sound her interest in the tension created by opposition: control and chaos\, the unique and the mass produced\, the practical and the absurd. \nShen’s multimedia practice extends beyond musical composition and performance to include installation and non-traditional methods of distribution. Her DIY approach to deconstructing the concepts of “materiality\, value and mass production” both integrate and re-contextualize the formats of the readymade and assemblage techniques. For example\, the album art for her debut LP\, Hair Birth\, utilizes copper to transform the cover into a loudspeaker through which the record can be played. In 2021\, Shen produced a series of cut-up records in cast resin embedded with found materials\, functioning not only as playable music media but as unique art objects. For recent performances\, she pioneered the use of Needle Nails\, acrylic nails with embedded turntable styluses\, which allow her to play up to 5 tracks of a record at once. Needle Nails\, Levitating speaker\, and her Noise Combs are some of the objects created by her as part of an extensive repertoire of innovations in the design of sound augmentation. These sculptural elements invite the viewer to unpack one’s relationship with the material possibilities for creating sound. \n  \nLerner 101

SUMMARY:Orcutt Shelley Miller with Chris Forsyth's What Is Now
DESCRIPTION:Orcutt Shelley Miller is an avant-rock trio comprised of three highly celebrated figures of experimental music: Bill Orcutt (Harry Pussy)\, Steve Shelley (Sonic Youth) and Ethan Miller (Howlin Rain\, Comets On Fire). Following in the footsteps of the high-firing free jazz and European outer-rock bands of the ‘60s and ‘70s and the Pacific Rim’s subterranean reimagining of “rock” form in the 90s\, Orcutt Shelley Miller utilize explosive group chemistry\, focused intention and chance to pursue the creation of song in its rawest\, purest form. \nSharing the bill will be Philadelphia-based guitarist Chris Forsyth and his new trio What Is Now. The band features double bassist John Moran (Bark Culture\, Daniel Villareal Trio) and drummer Joey Sullivan (Florry\, Bark Culture). The collaborative project continues a trajectory that Pitchfork compared to that of John Cale\, saying that Forsyth “has evolved along a multifaceted trajectory\, expanding his toolkit with each new record.”

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Mariam Rezaei
DESCRIPTION:Mariam Rezaei is a multi-award-winning composer\, turntablist and performer working across experimental new music\, free improvisation\, mutant club music and hip-hop. Described by The Wire as “one of the most technically adept and creatively daring artists to use the turntable as a musical instrument\,” Rezaei uses a digital vinyl system\, allowing her to manipulate an expansive range of samples in real time. In addition to her mastery of classic turntablist skills (skratches\, beat-juggles)\, Rezaei has pioneered several techniques of her own\, including free juggling\, turntable sines (controlling sine waves with the pitch slider)\, needle dripping (composing music specifically for needle dropping on multiple decks at once)\, and needle weaving (using a digital vinyl system to loop music live using two decks\, with nothing predetermined). \nThe Anglo-Iranian virtuoso’s work has been described as “genuinely ground-breaking” (London Jazz News 2022) and “high-velocity sonic surrealism” (The Guardian 2022). Praised by The Wire\, Uncut and Bandcamp Daily\, her latest solo release FRACTURED (Heat Crimes) was one of The Quietus’ cassette releases of 2024. In October 2025\, she premieres Scholar’s Record\, a major commission for the 75th Donaueschinger Musiktage that draws on the legendary festival’s audio archives. Other forthcoming projects include a new collaborative work with Ensemble Contrechamps to be premiered in Feb 2026 and solo\, orchestral and band commissions for Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2026. In addition to her solo work\, Rezaei is a member of the international free music supergroup The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (with saxophonist Mette Rasmussen\, trumpeter/electronics Gabriele Mitelli and drummer Lukas König) and the pioneering Turntable Trio with Evicshen and Maria Chávez\, with whom she recently toured Canada and the USA. She has composed orchestral works with Matthew Shlomowitz (6 Scenes for Turntable and Orchestra\, premiered at IMD Darmstadt 2023) and recently performed Anthony Braxton’s Ghost Trance Music with guitarist Kobe Van Cauwenberghe. At JazzFest Berlin 2025\, she will make her debut as Fire! Orchestra’s new turntablist\, premiering the Words project. \n  \nRoom 201C

SUMMARY:GEORGE
DESCRIPTION:Drummer/composer John Hollenbeck is a composer of music uncategorizable beyond the fact of being always identifiably his: a conceptualist able to translate the traditions of jazz and new music into a fresh\, eclectic\, forward-looking language of his own invention\, a drummer and percussionist possessed of a playful versatility and a virtuosic wit\, and a musical thinker allergic to repetition\, forever seeking to surprise himself and his audiences. Hollenbeck formed GEORGE during the Covid pandemic\, bringing together three musicians that he’d long admired – saxophonist/flutist Anna Webber and keyboardists/vocalists Chiquita Magic and Sarah Rossy. \nTheir group sound is firmly planted outside any categories or labels\, as evidenced on their 2023 debut\, Letters to George. Pitchfork called the album\, “a whimsical effort largely guided by the diverse tastes of its members… an exercise in leaving things up to fate [that is] impulsive and fun\, augmented by sounds more associated with dance music and alt-pop than free jazz.” The name GEORGE was chosen to reflect the elusive influences that go into the band’s idiosyncratic sound. By way of (a sort of) explanation\, Hollenbeck cites the name’s derivation from the Greek word georgos meaning “farmer\, earthworker” – not to mention a laundry list of namesakes including George Washington Carver\, George Clooney\, George Floyd\, Georgia O’Keefe\, Saint George\, George Carlin\, George Clinton… you get the picture.

SUMMARY:Niloufar Shiri & Bahar Badieitabar + Parsa Ferdowsi
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with Philly Iranians \nNiloufar Shiri & Bahar Badieitabar: \nKamancheh player and composer Niloufar Shiri began her musical journey at the Tehran Music Conservatory in Iran. She later immigrated to the USA and pursued her studies in composition at the University of California\, San Diego\, and Integrated Composition\, Improvisation\, and Technology (ICIT) at the University of California\, Irvine. \nNiloufar’s musical world lies at the intersection of classical Iranian music\, contemporary music\, and improvisation. Her focus revolves around exploring the concept of displacement in relation to familiar and distant environments. Her music closely examines textural and timbral spaces\, drawing inspiration from staggered pitch relations found in the Radif\, as well as bird sounds\, noise\, and feedback. Her unique and radical approach to kamancheh performance significantly expands the sonic capabilities of the instrument and places her at the forefront of its practice. \nBahar Badieitabar is an Iranian Oud player and composer\, recently graduated on a full scholarship with a double major in composition and performance from Berklee College of Music. At the age of 12\, Bahar began her musical training at the Tehran Music School\, where she earned her high school diploma in music. She studied under notable oud players\, including Siavash Roshan\, Negar Bouban\, and Yurdal Tukcan. Bahar won first place at the Iranian Youth National Music Festival for two consecutive years at ages 16 and 17. She has performed as both a performer and composer at numerous venues\, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, MCG Jazz\, and Groton Hill Music Center\, as well as at music festivals in Iran and the United States\, collaborating with musicians of diverse backgrounds. \nIn 2017\, Bahar began her undergraduate studies in Oud Performance at the University of Tehran before moving to the United States to study at Berklee. She has studied and worked with acclaimed musicians such as Marti Epstein\, Kris Davis\, and Alain Mallet\, and has been a part of Berklee’s Institute of Jazz Gender and Justice since 2022. \nBahar’s background contributes to her authentic composition approach\, rooted in Iranian classical music\, contemporary concert music\, and jazz. Currently\, she is a member of Danilo Perez’s Global Jazz Messengers. She has shared the stage with Grammy-winning\, world-renowned musicians\, including John Patitucci\, Brian Blade\, Danilo Perez and Bruno Raberg. \nParsa Ferdowsi: \nParsa Ferdowsi is a musician and improviser\, born and raised in Karaj\, Iran. He is a member of Shiraz Ensemble (with Sina Homaee\, Noushin Nowroozi\, and Sepehr Pirasteh)\, and Taarof Duo (with Matt Wellins.) He has regularly worked with artists such as Nat Baldwin\, Shawn O’Sullivan\, Michael Pestel\, and Negar Soleymanifar. His works have been performed by ensembles such as Pamplemousse Ensemble\, String Noise Duo\, and Wesleyan’s Toneburst Laptop and Electronic Arts Ensemble. He also collaborated on some projects with Peter Zummo\, David Vantieghem\, Alex Waterman (as a part of the Arthur Russell’s City Park project led by Nick Hallet)\, David Behrman\, Nicolas Collins\, and Lea Bertucci. \nHe works with sound\, space\, image\, words\, expectations\, and frames. His works include compositions\, photographs\, videos\, improvisations\, performance\, poetry\, and acting. His compositions usually benefit from use of verbal notations\, theatrics\, collaborative environments\, site-specificity\, and collective improvisation. As an improviser\, he implements some of his compositional techniques and issues around decision-making alongside the language and affordances of Iranian Dastāghi music. \nHe is currently studying Music Technology in the graduate program at Temple University. He holds an MA in Experimental Music/Performance from Wesleyan University where he worked with Ron Kuivila\, Paula Matthusen\, and Neely Bruce\, and a BA in Composition from the Tehran University of Art. He studied tombak with Mahmoud Balandeh\, santur and Radif of dastgahi music with Behnam Mehrabi and Majid Kiani. \nFree/Donation. Venue is wheelchair accessible.
