SUMMARY:Audrey Chen / Flandrew Fleisenberg \, Schuyler Thum
DESCRIPTION:Berlin-based Audrey Chen and Philadelphia’s Flandrew Fleisenberg have spent over a decade refining a singular\, breathing tactile space. In a rare Philadelphia performance\, Chen’s internally driven sonic language—a mix of voice and electronics—meets Fleisenberg’s “material conjuring” and obsession with physical phenomena. For Fleisenberg\, drums are secondary to the hidden voices of mundane objects; he coaxes out material textures to build an architectural frame for the music. This creates a striking contrast: Chen’s visceral\, personal explorations set against a landscape of manipulated objects. The result is an intimate\, evolving discourse between the internal self and the physical world. \n \nAudrey Chen – Voice\, electronics (Berlin\, Germany) \nFlandrew Fleisenberg – Percussion\, objectis (Philadelphia) \n \n \nSchuyler Thum– Daxophone

SUMMARY:Takuya Kuroda
DESCRIPTION:Takuya Kuroda is a highly respected trumpeter and arranger born in Kobe\, Japan and based in New York City. Over the course of his seven albums to date\, Kuroda has evolved a unique hybrid sound blending soulful jazz\, funk\, post-bop\, fusion and hip hop. Kuroda moved to New York to study jazz and contemporary music at The New School. While there he met vocalist José James\, with whom he worked on the Blackmagic\, No Beginning No End\, and While You Were Sleeping albums for the legendary label Blue Note\, which also released his own Rising Son in 2014. Since then Kuroda has collaborated with the likes of Akoya Afrobeat and DJ Premier’s BADDER band and released seven albums of his own. \nHis eighth studio record\, Everyday (out Feb. 28\, 2025) builds on and dives ever deeper into the hip hop and neo-soul elements of his previous work. It is a deliciously rhythmic enterprise and a triumph of genre-blending modern jazz. Kuroda’s playing is sure-footed and pure –– whether on the horn\, synth\, or Rhodes–– and he virtuosically dances among infectious rhythms of his own creation.

SUMMARY:Biotic (Shawn Lovato/Ingrid Laubrock/Henry Mermer
DESCRIPTION:Biotic (Shawn Lovato/Ingrid Laubrock/Henry Mermer): \nShawn Lovato is a New York-based bassist\, composer\, and improviser “with a distinctive compositional approach and a knack for finding the right partners to bring it to life” (All About Jazz). Growing up on the outskirts of New York City\, Lovato was deeply influenced by its underground scenes\, including hip hop\, metal\, and punk rock. These early fringe influences continue to shape his dedication to a wide range of musical approaches—taking him from CBGB to The Stone to Lincoln Center. As a bandleader\, Lovato’s albums Microcosms (ears&eyes\, 2022) and Cycles of Animation (Skirl\, 2017) display a breathtaking spectrum that push the frameworks of contemporary improvisation. Shawn’s records have been described as “absolutely stunning” (Jazz Trail) and “profound” (Jazz Word). In addition to leading his own projects\, Lovato has performed alongside Ingrid Laubrock\, Tony Malaby\, Tom Rainey\, Anna Webber\, Jacob Sacks\, DoYeon Kim\, Brandon Seabrook\, and others\, and serves as an Adjunct Instructor at Hofstra University. \nIngrid Laubrock is an experimental saxophonist and composer\, interested in exploring the borders between musical realms and creating multi-layered\, dense and often evocative sound worlds. A prolific composer\, Laubrock was named a “true visionary” by pianist and former Kennedy Center & a “fully committed saxophonist and visionary” by The New Yorker. Laubrock has performed with Anthony Braxton\, Muhal Richard Abrams\, Jason Moran\, Kris Davis\, Nels Cline\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Mary Halvorson\, Myra Melford\, Zeena Parkins\, Tom Rainey\, Tim Berne\, Dave Douglas\, Wet Ink and many others. Laubrock has composed for ensembles ranging from solo to chamber orchestra. Awards include Fellowship in Jazz Composition by the Arts Foundation\, BBC Jazz Prize for Innovation\, SWR German Radio Jazz Prize and German Record Critics Quarterly Award. \nHenry Mermer is a drummer\, improviser\, and composer of instrumental and electronic music currently based in Ridgewood\, Queens. As a collaborator and improviser\, he has performed at venues including The Stone\, The Jazz Gallery\, The Blue Note\, happylucky no. 1\, Spectrum NYC\, Public Records\, and The Bar Next Door. Henry holds a B.A. in Philosophy and a B.F.A. in Jazz and Contemporary Music from The New School\, where he studied with Andrew Cyrille\, Jane Ira Bloom\, Reggie Workman\, Matt Wilson\, Mary Halvorson\, and Eric Wubbels. \nBhob Rainey/John Moran/Joey Sullivan trio: \nBhob Rainey is a Philadelphia-based composer\, saxophonist\, and sound designer celebrated for his innovative contributions to contemporary\, experimental\, and improvised music. A recipient of the prestigious Pew Fellowship in the Arts and co-founder of the influential improvisational duo nmperign\, Rainey has garnered acclaim for his groundbreaking work across disciplines\, including collaborations in theater\, dance\, and visual art. With performances and commissions spanning prestigious venues and festivals worldwide\, his work continuously challenges boundaries of musical thought and instrumental technique. \nJoey Sullivan and John Moran have been active in the Philadelphia scene for years. \nMoran has been a part of Maya Keren’s trio with Julian Miltenberger\, Micah Graves’ group\, as well as playing in bands like Bark Culture\, EAT\, Guitars and Drums\, and Ceiba\, both of the latter alongside Joey Sullivan. \nSullivan is active in both setting up some very successful free music showings as well as playing with an array of east coast improvisers. SUMMARY:Min Xiao-Fen & Julian Kytasty
DESCRIPTION:Few artists have done more to both honor and reinvent the 2000-year history of the pipa than soloist\, vocalist and composer Min Xiao-Fen. Classically trained in her native China\, she served as a principal pipa soloist at Nanjing Traditional Music Orchestra and was an in-demand interpreter of traditional music before relocating to the United States and forging a new path for her instrument alongside many of the leading lights in modern jazz\, free improvisation\, experimental and contemporary classical music – a list that includes Wadada Leo Smith\, Derek Bailey\, Randy Weston\, John Zorn\, Christian Marclay and Björk. \nJulian Kytasty was born in Detroit\, Michigan\, into a family of Ukrainian refugees who came to the United States after World War II. He is a third generation player of the bandura\, a Ukrainian stringed instrument with similarities to the lute and the zither. In 1980 he moved to New York to be the music director of the New York Bandura Ensemble and began a career that has taken him all over the world. As a performer\, recording artist\, composer\, teacher\, and ensemble leader\, he has redefined the possibilities of his instrument\, working cross-culturally with such artists as Chinese pipa player Wu Man\, klezmer revivalist Michael Alpert\, and Mongolian master musician Battuvshin. In September 2021\, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Julian Kytasty the title “Honoured Artist of Ukraine” in a ceremony in New York City. \nThe two modern masters have converged for a new project aptly named “Boundless\,” a term that concisely describes their wide-ranging explorations both individually and as a border-defying duo.

SUMMARY:Alex Harding & Lucian Ban duo
DESCRIPTION:Alex Harding & Lucian Ban duo: \nThe relationship between Alex Harding and Lucian Ban has been long and fruitful. Their combination of elements of improvisational music have helped the pair develop a unique musical language that transcends the expectations of the jazz genre. \nPianist Lucian Ban arrived in New York City from Romania to study at the New School in 1998. As he first began to immerse himself into the local scene\, Ban was fortunate to hear baritone saxophonist Alex Harding. The two hit it off immediately and formed a fast friendship leading to musical collaboration. This led to Ban providing a handful of songs for Harding and Harding becoming an essential voice on Ban’s recording debut on their co-led album\, Somethin’ Holy (CIMP\, 2002). It was Harding’s unique voice that attracted Ban\, one that had also captured the ears of many legendary collaborators\, including Sun Ra\, Muhal Richard Abrams\, and Julius Hemphill. Harding’s heartfelt and blues-drenched baritone sax playing lent well to Ban’s open-minded and improvisatory approach to music. Harding’s visceral style lent an edge and authenticity to their music\, a sound and feeling anchored in the blues that Ban came to the States to try to discover and absorb. Their communion was a true celebration of the spirit\, as both found something in the other to help free their spirit in performance. Harding was essential in introducing the young pianist to the luminaries of the jazz scene\, including Sam Newsome\, Nasheet Waits\, Brad Jones\, and the incredible tuba player Bob Stewart. These relationships have been long lasting and essential to the pair’s musical development. The music that they created leans into the blues\, in feeling\, sound\, and color. The tones are mysterious yet rooted. Occasionally speaking to early traditional sounds of jazz but the use of Fender Rhodes giving a contemporary\, Afro-Futurist meets new music tint. As Alex Harding and Lucian Ban’s musical partnership has grown\, the pair have been able to incorporate elements of their musical backgrounds into an intriguing and singular sound. \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.

SUMMARY:Amir ElSaffar New Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Composer\, trumpeter\, santur player\, vocalist\, and bandleader Amir ElSaffar has been described in the New York Times as “the celebrated trumpeter and composer who explores vital connections between jazz and Arabic music.” ElSaffar leads a number of critically-acclaimed ensembles: The 17-piece Rivers of Sound Orchestra; Two Rivers\, which combines the musical languages and instrumentation of Iraqi Maqam and contemporary jazz; the Amir ElSaffar Quintet\, performing ElSaffar’s microtonal compositions with standard jazz instrumentation; Safaafir\, the only ensemble in the US performing and preserving the Iraqi Maqam in its traditional format; and The Alwan Ensemble\, specializing in classical music from Egypt\, the Levant\, and Iraq. In addition\, he has worked with jazz legends Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp\, and prominent jazz musicians\, Danilo Perez\, Mark Dresser\, Gerry Hemingway\, Marc Ribot\, Henry Grimes\, and Oliver Lake. \nElSaffar’s New Quartet brings together his trio – consisting of Tomas Fujiwara\, one of NYC’s most in-demand and dynamic drummers\, and Ole Mathisen\, a tenor saxophonist of unparalleled technique and versatility – with Greek pianist Tania Giannouli\, a rising star who has headlined almost every major jazz festival and venue in Europe over the past several years. ElSaffar’s nuanced and vibrant trumpet sound\, rooted in Chicago school classical technique and combining subtle ornamentation and microtones of Arab Maqam with Jazz influences ranging from Miles to Woody Shaw\, guides the ensemble into unexplored musical territories. Their music ranges from intensely quiet and nearly silent to ecstatic and declamatory\, with the microtonal piano ringing ear-opening and beautifully unconventional harmonies throughout. \n\nAmir ElSaffar — trumpet\nTomas Fujiwara — drums\nOle Mathisen — bass\nTania Giannouli — piano\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Takaat & Heavenly Bodies
DESCRIPTION:TAKAAT: \nTAKAAT (pronounced tuh-cot)\, meaning “noise” in the Tuareg language Tamashek\, for this tour is the duo of Ahmoudou Madassane & Mikey Coltun (joined by a blown out drum machine). Also known as the rhythm section of Mdou Moctar. TAKAAT is sonic chaos\, improvisation\, freedom of exploration\, and the punk styles of bands such as Fugazi and Unwound\, all mixed together with the guitar music from the Sahel. \nTAKAAT started during soundchecks while on the road with Mdou Moctar when they indulged their shared love for amps cranked to 11 and the sound of blown out speakers. Towards the end of 2023\, they started writing music together\, inspired by their shared experiences with the sounds and energy of Hausa bar bands\, gritty soukous\, and 2000s post-punk. The music of TAKAAT is intense\, dark\, and energetic. Deeply inspired by the DIY ethos of punk\, they capture that thrill of the new and the ecstasy of togetherness in these heavy rockers. TAKAAT follows in the spirit of the independent music culture that birthed hardcore basement shows\, bedroom tape labels\, and generator-powered pick-up wedding bands. \nHeavenly Bodies: \nHeavenly Bodies are an ever evolving psych experiment hailing from Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, with a revolving cast of musicians and instruments centered around the core group of Ashley and Dustin Burrows and Shaun Bailey. \naccessibility: The entrance on the 48th Street side of building is wheelchair accessible via a street-level lift. Their debut performances in early 2025 included the Spotlight Series at Rowan University (NJ)\, No Exit presents in Cleveland (OH)\, and the Fuse Factory in Columbus (OH).
