SUMMARY:ResoNation Trio
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop is thrilled to present the return of maverick trumpeter Steven Bernstein with his striking new acoustic trio at Solar Myth on Tuesday\, June 30\, 2026. \nFew artists exult in the joyous exhilaration and intrepid spirit of communal music-making with the fervor and vitality of visionary bandleader\, trumpeter\, composer and arranger Steven Bernstein. In his new chordless trio with master improvisers Scott Colley on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums\, Bernstein applies that bold passion to an uncharacteristically pared-down setting. Their startling debut album\, ResoNation Trio\, features contemplative explorations that may feel like a departure from the raucous spirit that characterizes so much of the trumpeter’s work\, yet the trio discovers such an audacious beauty and celebratory gusto in these sparse environments that the music feels uniquely Bernstein’s. \nResoNation Trio is also a rarity in his oeuvre for featuring Bernstein – whose mastery of the little-used slide trumpet has become so central to his sonic identity – exclusively playing valve trumpet and flugelhorn. The spacious\, skeletal pieces that Bernstein penned for ResoNation Trio open new and expansive pathways for the veteran trumpeter while harkening back to his early experiences on the experimental 1980s Downtown scene and the influence of pioneers like Don Cherry\, Lester Bowie\, Baikida Carroll\, Wadada Leo Smith and Butch Morris.

SUMMARY:Teiku
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop presents the Chicago and Detroit based creative music ensemble Teiku at Solar Myth on Sunday\, June 28\, 2026. \nChicago pianist Josh Harlow and Detroit percussionist Jonathan Barahal founded Teiku on the foundation of the music they grew up singing: their Jewish-Ukranian ancestors’ Passover songs\, unique to each respective family and passed down aurally over generations. Harlow and Taylor’s families each steward a number of unique melodies that likely originated in their ancestral villages but survive only through their family lines. \nThe band is made complete by bass clarinetist Jason Stein (Natural Information Society\, Hearts and Minds) and bassist Jaribu Shahid (Sun Ra Arkestra\, Art Ensemble of Chicago\, Griot Galaxy)\, and the group moves fluidly between frenetic density\, subtle timbral explorations\, electronic processing\, and complex mixed meter\, among other stylistic territories. Teiku is a Talmudic acronym that roughly translates to “unanswered question\,” a fitting description of the process of discovery that creative improvisers know well: creating spontaneous and cohesive sonic environments that are felt viscerally but cannot be expressed in words. This project reflects its leaders’ musical and spiritual sensibilities: a yearning for insight\, an acute sensitivity to the present moment\, a space made for searching deeper.

SUMMARY:Free Range- Matt Davis's Aerial Photography
DESCRIPTION:Chamber Music in multiple idioms. Tom Kraines features in this eclectic ensemble. $20 with drinks provided 🙂 \nEstablished in 2002\, Matt Davis’ Aerial Photograph is a “wildly imaginative” (Jazziz Magazine”) ensemble that explores the intersection of jazz\, contemporary classical and folk music\, as well as social\, cultural and historical observation through aural histories. Described as “Inspired” by Downbeat Magazine and “Eloquent” by JazzTimes\, the group has performed throughout the eastern United States\, as well as in China and South Korea. The instrumentation of the group varies\, but often consists of a string quartet\, guitar\, bass\, drums and several wind instruments. Aerial Photograph’s original repertoire is inspired by the cultural pluralism that is fundamental to American society. The compositional process begins with communication: Davis conducts conversations with communities that include senior citizens\, recovering addicts\, children\, immigrants\, religious believers\, community volunteers\, incarcerated\, homeless\, teachers\, caregivers\, and artists and musicians. These conversations are recorded and are then woven into compositions that endeavor to express the feelings\, emotions\, and stories that are shared. The resulting music gives audiences the opportunity to find points of connection to the music\, and to experience familiar or unfamiliar communities in a new and engaging way. The Sway of Rivers is in the process of recording\, and is slated for release in 2023. This new music brings several new elements to the mix\, including home-made percussion instruments\, vocals\, and new approaches of expressing forms and time in music. \nRSVP\n \nFree Range is a monthly concert series providing artists with important resources in today’s content-driven music scene\, and providing audiences with exceptional and affordable (even better than a city-wide!) Jazz and improvised music. \n \nFree Range prioritizes local musicians\, giving all performers high-quality audio and video of their show\, full use/rights to their materials\, including the raw audio for additional production if they so choose. \n \nPlease follow @free_range_music to stay up to date. \n \nSponsored by Love City Brewing & Urban Movement Arts/Philly Music Factory

SUMMARY:Fred Frith & Walnut Brain
DESCRIPTION:Fred Frith: \nFred Frith is a pioneer of the extended electric guitar. He learned to compose in \nHenry Cow\, developed his song-writing skills in Art Bears\, explored his multi- instrumentalism in Skeleton Crew\, rocked the house with Massacre and is still doing all of those things\, having been in one band or another continuously since 1964! Meanwhile his work has been performed by both Baroque and contemporary music ensembles\, along with string quartets\, chamber orchestras\, and a whole range of groups and artists in the ever-expanding field of semi-popular music. Fred composes extensively for film and dance\, and taught improvisation for years at Mills College in Oakland\, California and the Musik Akademie in Basel\, Switzerland. His life-long passion for improvising has increasingly led him to work with artists who don’t necessarily define themselves as improvisers\, including Brazilian drummer Mariá Portugal\, cellist Paula Sanchez\, and bricoleur extraordinaire Sudhu Tewari. Fred is the subject of Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzels’ award-winning film Step Across the Border. \n“if (you) haven’t seen Fred improvise solo\, (you) must. Just to see him live\, it has to be done. It’s one of the wonders of the world.” —Marc Ribot \n“Fred Frith is a great drummer.” —Miles Davis \n“Frith should be sellotaped to Derek Bailey and pushed off a cliff.” —Skelidude\, YouTube \nWalnut Brain: \nWalnut Brain\, the duo of Alina Josan and Steve Heise\, mess around with a custom-made diddley bow and an electric guitar to make decidedly earthbound sounds that reach for the clouds or the stars or whatever’s out there. A diddley bow is an instrument whose single string\, when struck and bowed by a sensitive player\, emits sounds that both scrape and sing. As we all know\, an electric guitar is a juiced up instrument capable of producing some of the most exciting sounds imaginable. In the intuitive hands of Walnut Brain\, these instruments weave together to oscillating rhythms and fleeting melodies. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom.

DESCRIPTION:FUJI||||||||||TA is a Sound Artist living in Japan. His unique practice utilizes various natural phenomena that respond to his interest in wanting to hear unheard sounds and unknown sounds. Instead of playing a composed piece of music\, he aims to go as far as possible towards his own unknown state of being\, with an emphasis on observing the sound closely. \nIn 2009 Fujita hand fabricated a Pipe Organ that has only 11 pipes and no keyboard. Fujita conceived and built it using his imagination\, without any prior or specialized knowledge. The air pump (called “FUIGO”) which is kept moving by the left hand when playing\, and is based on associations with an ancient blacksmith. This unique instrument is too delicate in its nature to be played properly without a great deal of experimentation and trial and error. Fujita has spent a long time inventing ways to play it and experimenting with ways to utilise this instrument in sound systems.

SUMMARY:The Humanosity Project
DESCRIPTION:The Humanosity Project is an avant-garde and free-jazz improvisational quartet based in the Philadelphia and New York areas. Formed by guitarist Dave Ross and flugelhorn/clarinet player Matt Lavelle (alongside bassist Pete Dennis and drummer Julius Masri)\, the group is known for operating in the extreme\, experimental regions of jazz. The quartet originally formed while playing under a tree by a river in Philadelphia. This eventually evolved into a collaborative ensemble that regularly performs at underground jazz venues\, lofts\, and experimental festivals (such as the AIRLFT Festival at The Rotunda in Philadelphia\, IBeam in Brooklyn\, and concerts in Baltimore and Connecticut). They focus on deep\, spontaneous musical conversation and free improvisation\, operating without rigid structures and exploring the limits of sonic expression. \nFor this special occasion\, Humanosity is joined by Philadelphia saxophone legend Terry Lawson. Terry has long been on the front line of music\, originally playing in the band of the great drummer Roy Haynes and headlining at the Apollo. Terry’s tenor saxophone has been heard in the Sun Ra Arkestra\, The Odean Pope Saxophone Choir\, The Sonic Liberation Front\, and Airlift.

SUMMARY:JG Thirlwell performs SILVER MANTIS
DESCRIPTION:Silver Mantis is a 50 minute instrumental electro-acoustic presentation\, performed with software and sampling\, theremin and audio objects. It is an immersive multi channel composition which allows for an elastic performance. The inspiration behind Silver Mantis was to create a work incorporating live re-composition and improvisation into its structure\, one which could expand and contract fluidly with flow and spontanaeity from pre-ordained building blocks of sound. Incorporating musique concrète and electronic sound along with live instrumentation\, the composition is dynamic\, cinematic and diverse with stylistic left-turns\, creating a tension between time and anxiety. It is performed with a projection created exclusively for the project by acclaimed Swedish visual artist Sten Backman. \nSilver Mantis has been performed at Roulette Intermedia in NYC\, Cafe Oto in London\, 2220 in Los Angeles\, Big Ears festival in Tennessee\, Timacua Arts Foundation in Orlando\, Melbourne Recital Center\, Audio Foundation in Auckland\, Center for New Music in SF\, and Elastic Arts in Chicago. \nNOTE: This is a seated show.

SUMMARY:Kalia Vandever
DESCRIPTION:Kalia Vandever is a Grammy Award-winning trombonist and composer based in Brooklyn. Their approach to the trombone is distinctive and defined by their sonorous tone and lyrical improvisational voice. They lean into the challenges of the instrument and allow patience and melody to guide their process. In their compositional practice\, Vandever draws from their love of songs and improvisation\, creating a landscape of sounds that resonate in the body and hold the listener. \nWriting for WBGO Jazz\, Nate Chinen said that Vandever’s 2022 sophomore album Regrowth “confirms [their] strengths as a composer and bandleader with a distinctly contemporary point of view.” (Nate Chinen\, WBGO Jazz). 2025’s Another View featured the stellar cast of Mary Halvorson\, Kanoa Mendenhall and Kayvon Gordon and was praised by Downbeat for “its entrancing\, cyclical rhythms and longing melodicism.” At Solar Myth\, Vandever will be taking another bold stride forward in their ongoing creative evolution.

SUMMARY:Marisa Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Marisa Anderson’s music transcends borders. The topography of her work interrogates the intersections of artistry and expression with form and tradition. A singular guitarist and voracious musical collaborator\, Anderson crafts pieces bursting with equal parts reverence and curiosity\, contouring familiar shapes into work that is wholly her own. Anderson has spent decades mining the veins of the complicated\, interconnected American folk traditions she was steeped in from a young age\, stretching beyond those traditions and incorporating the vocabulary and techniques of vernacular and folk musics from across time and beyond boundary into her work. Eschewing replication or revival\, Anderson’s music lives in conversation with tradition. “My approach to tradition is with the hands that I have and the history that I have\,” notes Anderson. “In that way it’s a collaboration–you don’t go into collaboration trying to play like the other person\, you go in trying to find out how to play together.”

SUMMARY:Paolo Angeli
DESCRIPTION:Paolo Angeli: \nSardinian musician Paolo Angeli’s professional career was spent deep in the avant garde\, exploring post-rock\, experimental opera\, and more. His style was influenced heavily by that of guitarist Giovanni Scanu\, who was a major proponent of the classic Sardinian canto a chitarra style. The combination of inputs inspired Angeli to create his own instrument: an 18-stringed hybrid of guitar\, baritone\, violoncello\, and drums\, adorned with hammers\, pedals\, and even propellers operating at various speeds. Working closely with craftsman Francesco Concas\, Angeli created an instrument that enables an altogether new type of performance combining\, referencing\, and transcending free jazz\, folk noise\, and minimal pop. \n“Paulo Angeli is a musical conjurer\, an artist whose imaginative leaps defy gravity. A composer\, ethnomusicologist and instrument builder who draws on his deep knowledge of traditional Sardinian music\, he inhabits a timeless zone as a soil-rooted master and brash experimentalist. While suffused with Mediterranean cadences\, Angeli’s original pieces encompass flamenco\, jazz\, Baroque\, post-rock and new music. He plays a prepared Sardinian guitar of his own invention\, a fantastical 18-string hybrid combining elements of guitar\, cello and drums. \nA feast for the eyes as well as the ears\, Angeli in full flight is an astounding sight\, as he bows\, strikes\, hammers\, plucks and strums an instrument with strings going in all directions and foot-pedal-controlled motorized propellers. With sympathetic strings creating shimmering drones\, he adjusts tunings on the fly to create exquisitely lapidary\, orchestral music using electronic effects in real time (he eschews loopers\, creating every sound in the moment). \nIt’s not surprising that this singular musician has improvised and collaborated with masters such as Pat Metheny\, Fred Frith\, Evan Parker\, Zeena Parkins\, and Phillip Greenlief. Angeli’s music may be unclassifiable\, but it takes no expertise to recognize its strange and extravagant beauty”-SF Jazz \nvenue is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Max Johnson Sextet & Thomas Kraines
DESCRIPTION:Max Johnson Sextet: \nComposer\, bassist\, and improviser Max Johnson presents his brand new sextet in the premiere of “Without Fear\,” a new concert-length work performed alongside Anna Webber (tenor saxophone\, flute)\, Yuma Uesaka (soprano saxophone\, clarinet)\, Nate Wooley (trumpet)\, Lester St. Louis (cello)\, Max Johnson (double bass)\, and Jeff Davis (drumset\, vibraphone). The piece is a sprawling\, style-blurring composition that explores the many musical worlds Johnson has inhabited over the past fifteen years\, weaving together elements of jazz\, chamber music\, folk music\, free improvisation\, and progressive rock. \nThe work draws from Johnson’s experience as an in-demand performer and prolific composer\, having performed internationally and recorded with artists such as Anthony Braxton\, Geri Allen\, the Daedalus Quartet\, David Grisman\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Mary Halvorson\, Mivos Quartet\, and several alumni of Frank Zappa’s bands. Conceived as a musical ecosystem where diverse influences coexist and interact\, “Without Fear” highlights the individual voices and abilities of the ensemble while bringing Johnson’s expansive musical vision into a single personal work. \nAs a lover of comic books\, the piece is inspired by the Green Lantern\, whose power ring can create anything imaginable through sheer force of will\, so long as its bearer remains without fear. Like the ring itself\, the work imagines a creative space where the many musical languages Johnson inhabits can live together within a single composition. \nThomas Kraines: \nThomas Kraines\, a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School\, has gained renown as a versatile cellist\, composer\, and teacher. In addition to the Daedalus Quartet\, he performs often with his wife\, violinist Juliette Kang\, with the Philadelphia-based Network for New Music\, the Arcana Ensemble\, and the improvisatory ensembles Great Blue Heron and Basquiat Blues. Kraines’ solo cello and chamber compositions have been heard around the country. He has performed his own works in collaboration with artists such as Awadagin Pratt\, Mimi Stillman\, Maria Jette\, Ilana Davidson\, and Kinan Abou-afach. Kraines has served on the faculty of the Longy School of Music\, Princeton University\, Peabody Conservatory\, Phillips Academy Andover\, and Yellow Barn. He currently teaches at the University of Pennsylvania and the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. \n  \naccessibility: space is on the second floor up a flight of stairs.
