SUMMARY:Earth Tongues and Dan Blacksberg/Carlos Santiago/Sonali Singh trio
DESCRIPTION:Earth Tongues: \nAn ensemble dedicated to exploring the scope and scale of experimental improvised music\, Earth Tongues approaches each performance as a chance to build new\, challenging work that take silence and ambient sound into full account. Consisting of Carlo Costa on percussion\, Joe Moffett on trumpet\, and Dan Peck on tuba\, the trio creates immersive pieces that weave through a Venn diagram of music\, noise\, and quiet. \n“Ohio\, Earth Tongues’ second release on Neither/Nor Records\, is their most ambitious work to date. A long-form piece that stretches the very fabric of improvised music to the limit\, Ohio envelopes the listener with intensely quiet textures\, glacial build-ups and surprising\, thunderous moments of noise. It is a double-album inspired by the sonic extremes found in the natural and industrial worlds\, and an ode to the inescapably human desire to come to terms with those worlds.”-Peter Margasak/Bandcamp \nDan Blacksberg\, Carlos Santiago & Sonali Singh trio: \nDescribed by Bandcamp Daily as “a maestro who effortlessly hops between—and\, ultimately\, deconstructs—genres with abandon\,” Dan’s musical vision has led him to compose music with a wide reach. From writing danceable klezmer melodies on his album Radiant Others – the first klezmer album to feature the trombone as the lead instrument – to the free-jazz of the Dan Blacksberg Trio\, to genre-busting projects like his Hasidic doom metal band Deveykus and 2017 suite Together in Struggle\, Dan forges music with a voice that “aims to infuse the fearless avant-garde with timeless sounds and techniques\, and vice versa.” (WXPN’s The Key). \nCarlos Santiago was born and raised in Philadelphia and was educated at The Hartt School of Music and Temple University. Approaching music from multiple standpoints\, Carlos has relished performing in a wide variety of musical settings and styles such as the multi – disciplinary Bismuth String Quartet\, the complex mathematical compositions of the rock band Normal Love\, soloing with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia\, playing Tango\, Salsa\, and Afro-Caribbean jazz with Sonic Liberation Front\, or Roma jazz with BeauDjango. Past teachers include John Blake\, Diane Monroe\, Yusef Lateef\, Adolf Sandole\, Louis Lanza\, and Nicholas Mann. Sharing the unity of all of these types of music is the driving force behind his passion for sonic exploration. \nFrom busking on Broad street to drumming in a darkened cemetery\, Sonali lets themselves be swept into the madness and passion of Philadelphia’s creative and improvisation scene with handsome bassoon sidekick in tow. They ache to soothe hurt souls\, much like theirs\, on this shared journey. Through foundations of music therapy and the power of improvisation\, Sonali hopes to foster a sense of community\, nurturing and .. aaand.. aaand you get it. Make music with me. Make joy with me. Make space for grief\, anger\, loss\, and pain with me. Or let’s scream for no reason! \nvenue is wheelchair accessible

After completing an undergraduate composition degree at Ithaca College\, he spent two years on a Fulbright research grant in Krakow\, absorbing and participating with the Polish avant-garde and forming deep collaborative relationships with duo partner Rafal Mazur and both Marek and Tomek Choloniewski. He then lived in The Hague for eight years\, curating audiovisual art and performance and earning a masters degree from the experimental ArtScience Institute. In the 2010s he moved to Philadelphia\, participating in its radical art and anti-carceral activist scenes\, and is currently based in Ithaca\, New York. \nKeir will perform a solo set and a trio set with David Middleton (guitar) & Julius Masri (drums). \nAmong many other projects and collaborations\, David Middleton is a long-standing member of Sun Ra’s Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen. He has developed many through-composed and free-improvised performances\, compositions\, and orchestrations for an international list of ensembles and artists. Julius is a recipient of a 2022 Yaddo Fellowship for composition\, the 2022 university of the arts creative research and innovation grant\, and project funding via pew center for arts & heritage\, as well as Swarthmore college and the Andrew W. Mellon foundation. \nGolkoo Hosseini: \nGolkoo Hosseini is a mother\, psychiatrist\, and immigrant who has been playing the Setar\, a traditional Persian instrument since childhood. Music has always been her language for expressing the universal human pain and longing she witnesses in life\, the same calling that led her to psychiatry. \nGolkoo performs with the Hamoon Ensemble\, a collective of non-academic immigrant musicians who draw on the healing power of musical nostalgia to reconnect with their inner selves. She is passionate about uplifting underrepresented and minority artists and creating spaces where art fosters connection\, belonging\, and healing. \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.

SUMMARY:Imal Gnawa at MAAS
DESCRIPTION:Imal Gnawa stands at the intersection of traditions rooted in the deep spiritual and rhythmic legacy of Moroccan Gnawa music and bold futurism. Imal Gnawa seeks to weave together ritualistic trance acoustic elements with futuristic aesthetics\, creating a soundscape that is as timeless as it is avant-garde. \nAt the core of this music lies an intricate fusion\, where the talents of Eilon Elikam\, Andrew Fox and Atlas Phoenix weave together the organic warmth of acoustic instruments with the realms of electronic sounds. Together\, they create a dialogue between the ancient and the modern\, a conversation that pays tribute to the past while daring to push its boundaries forward. In their hands\, music becomes not just an art form\, but a living force—one that bridges cultures\, transforms hearts\, and affirms the universal power of sound to connect and heal. \nTheir debut E.P\, Twilight Prophecy\, serves as a manifesto of this vision. It captures the hypnotic groove and spiritual depth of Gnawa music\, electronic textures\, and a fearless approach to experimentation. The album’s compositions move between meditative trance states and electrifying swellings\, inviting listeners into a ceremonial space that transcends time and place. Imal Gnawa is a living experiment\, a celebration of cultural exchange\, and a commitment to the transformative power of music. \naccessibility: space is on the second floor up a flight of stairs. \nThis event supported by a sponsorship grant from the Penn Treaty Special Services District

His play is energetic\, demanding and breathtaking sensitive – still with over 80 years! He played/plays regular for example with Ken Vandermark\, Peter Brötzmann\, Evan Parker\, Mats Gustafsson\, Dominic Duval\, Jay Rosen\, Jeb Bishop\, The Thing\, Clifton Hyde\, Jérôme Bourdellon\, Raymond Boni\, Joe Giardullo. \nMichael Foster’s The Ghost is a trio that celebrates and ruthlessly probes the free jazz tradition’s queer feelings\, drawing inspiration from noise\, reductionism\, and the leather culture to unpack the masculinist aesthetics of musical catharsis. The Ghost is Michael Foster (tenor/soprano saxophones\, samples\, compositions)\, John Moran (bass)\, Joey Sullivan (drums). \nThe Humanosity Project: \nThe Humanosity Project is a quartet of four monster improvisors operating in the extreme regions of Jazz. They first got together under a tree by a river in Philadelphia and have since performed in NYC\, Baltimore and Washington DC. \nMatt Lavelle is a flugelhorn\, bass and alto clarinet player\, and composer now based in Philadelphia. He began his music career with Hildred Humphries\, a swing era veteran who played with Count Basie and Billie Holiday. He has played in ensembles led by Sabir Mateen since 2002. In 2005\, Lavelle began study with Ornette Coleman. Lavelle was a member of the Bern Nix quartet from 2010-2017. In 2011 Lavelle created the 12 Houses Orchestra. Lavelle has played and collaborated with Ornette Coleman\, William Parker\, Warren Smith\, Henry Grimes\, Eric Mingus\, Sabir Mateen\, Roy Campbell\, Daniel Carter\, Jemeel Moondoc\, Mat Maneri\, Ras Moshe\, Hilliard Greene\, Steve Swell\, Matana Roberts\, Bern Nix\, Jack DeSalvo\, Charles Downs\, Tom Cabrera\, Francois Grillot\, Giuseppi Logan\, William Hooker and many others. Lavelle published his first book\, New York City Subway Drama and Beyond\, in 2011. In 2013 he published a second book called The Jazz Musician’s Tarot Deck. Lavelle is also the author of the blog No Sound Left Behind. \nDave Ross (guitar) is the recipient of a Boston Music award and has performed at Lincoln Center\, Vision festival and The Kennedy Center. He has recorded and performed extensively as a leader and side man with Henry Grimes\, Marshall Allen\, William Parker\, William Hooker\, Ras Moshe\, Charles Downs\, Larry Roland\, Sabir Mateen\, Jason Hwang\, Albey Balgochian\, and many others. \nJulius Masri is a Philadelphia based multi instrumentalist\, and performer/composer for the city’s dance community at large. His music focuses on improvisatory methods and syncretic / linguistic exchanges within various musical languages including Jazz\, Metal\, AfroCuban\, Experimental Noise\, and Arabic music. Born in Tripoli\, Lebanon\, he moved to the States in 1990 and picked up drumming a year later. He studied with Philadelphia instructors Carl Mottola\, Elaine Hoffman-Watts\, and as an undergraduate at Bard College\, with AACM’s Thurman Barker\, Richard Teitelbaum\, and Joan Tower. Julius plays drums\, circuit modified Casio keyboards\, Oud\, Kamancheh (aka Rabab\, Spike Fiddle)\, and various other instruments. He currently performs in groups such as grind/crust metal bands Night Raids\, Nomad War Machine\, free jazz groups Bruxer\, Spectral Forces\, Humanosity Project\, Dromedaries\, trombone and synth duo Superlith\, and more. He has performed with Henry Grimes\, Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, Bobby Zankel\, Thurman Barker\, Jaap Blonk\, Randi Potoppidan\, members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. \nPete Dennis (they/he) is a musician\, improviser\, composer\, visual artist\, and teacher. Living in West Philadelphia\, Dennis is inspired by their beautiful community and the future. Other ever present inspirations include William Parker\, the works of Octavia E. Butler\, their partner Abigail\, and the knowledge that all vibrations carry the potential to transmit the truths of life and death. Dennis’s recorded creations are released using the project name Search for the Infinite Light and include but are not limited to Killing a Dixie Hummingbird (2019)\, World’s End Welcoming Committee (2021)\, and pastē (2022). Their most current projects and collaborations include 99 Futures\, Oarsman\, Mitamu\, St. John’s Wort\, and an ongoing poetry/bass duet performance with Abigail Swoboda. They believe that sound is the foundation of healing and would like to acknowledge all master improvisers of the past\,present\, and future. \nmadam data & Phillip Price duo: \nmadam data is an audio repair technician based in Singapore\, work that is always a struggle. In other parallel histories they are a musician living across the subjectivity-obliterating assault of noise\, the transcendent structuralism of jazz\, and the ceaseless insurgency of punk. This music is also a struggle. They have sought distance from any other artistic practice\, but are keen to show up\, in some fragmented way\, in moving realities\, cosmic realities\, realities broken and repaired. They will be performing in a duo with Philadelphia based drummer Phillip Price. \naccessibility: ramp into lobby\, then 7 stairs into theater

DESCRIPTION:  \nCamila Niebla is a Berlin-based saxophonist\, composer\, improviser\, visual artist\, and curator originally from Buenos Aires\, hailed by Jazz.pt as “an essential saxophonist of our time.” Her multidisciplinary practice forms a powerful constellation of music\, film\, and performance that explores identity\, migration\, and the erasures and hauntings of memory. Through both composition and improvisation\, she constructs emotionally charged sound worlds—such as on her acclaimed solo album una ofrenda a la ausencia (Relative Pitch Records)\, described by The New York City Jazz Record as “innately human and personal.” A dynamic presence in international scenes\, Niebla has collaborated with artists like Marilyn Crispell\, Angelica Sanchez\, Michael Formanek\, and Patrick Shiroishi\, and performed at festivals including Jazz Fest Berlin\, Saalfelden\, Ultima Oslo\, and the Winter Jazz Festival. She is co-founder of the Lilaila record label (with Marta Sanchez and Maria Grand) and an active curator\, leading experimental series such as “Disfigured Rivers” in Berlin and “Guillotina” in Buenos Aires. Her current projects include duos and trios with Downes\, Lisle\, Sanchez\, and Formanek\, as well as her sextet The Hanged One. She is a 2024 and 2025 German Jazz Prize nominee in the Woodwinds category.

SUMMARY:New Thread Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present the New Thread Quartet performing their program Explorations. The ensemble invites the audience to a reception following the performance. \nNew Thread Quartet presents Explorations\, Vol. 8: Energy Flows\, featuring music by Marilyn Shrude\, Georg Friedrich Haas\, Hannah Kendall\, James Tenney\, and a world premiere by Hong-Da Chin. The quartet’s annual Explorations Series\, now in its 8th iteration\, is dedicated to programming important works of our time. The unifying element that brings these works together is the undulation of sonorities. \nWishing doesn’t make it so was inspired by the same phrase from Stephen King’s Heart of Atlantis. Hong-Da Chin is intrigued by these words\, because they point to how our “minds can run like a child in a world full of winter\,” but it’s not until we take action that our ideas become real and hold meaning. This transfers to the action a composer takes when they engrave the ideas they have in their mind. Chin takes the trill\, a standard technique used for centuries\, to a whole new level. \nenergy flows nervously . . . in search of stillness is seeped in the chromatic motion and harmony typical of Marilyn Shrude’s music. Pulsating\, churning\, and thickly layered\, the intensity waxes to its loudest\, most dissonant sonorities\, finally waning to calmness and silence. \nHannah Kendall’s Gilt was inspired by Hew Locke’s 2022-2023 Facade Commission of the same name\, created for The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Kendall represents Locke’s four shimmering\, golden sculptures with each voice in the quartet. The extreme saturation of sound and layered texture mirrors the meaning and symbolism behind Locke’s piece. \nSaxophonquartett is a spectral motor of microtones\, swelling and rubbing against each other until they explode into wailing overtones. The piece is a masterful display of Georg Friedrich Haas’ ability to take musicians to the edges of their instruments. \nJames Tenney\, American music theorist and composer\, included Swell Piece in his collection entitled Postal Pieces\, short works that could fit on a postcard. Instrumentation is not specified and the instructions are simple. Players swell from nothing to as loud as they can play and return to nothing with as little timbre and intonation shift as possible. The piece demonstrates Tenney’s interest in harmonic perception\, minimal material\, meditation\, among other parameters.

SUMMARY:NETI - NETI (AMIRTHA KIDAMBI & MATT EVANS)\, STRIDER (JOANNA MATTREY & STEVEN LONG) & THE EARLY
DESCRIPTION:Neti-Neti (Amirtha Kidambi & Matt Evans) \nNeti-Neti is the lo-fi ritual music duo of Matt Evans (drums/electronics) and Amirtha Kidambi (vocals/electronics) that formed amidst their mutual experiences surrounding grief after the death of loved ones. Neti-Neti\, translated as “It is not this\, it is not that” from Sanskrit\, is a contemplation on the nature of reality\, life\, death\, birth and rebirth extracted from the Hindu text of rituals The Upanishads. The duo has performed at Skanu Mezs Festival\, Latvia\, Suoni Per il Popolo Festival\, Montreal\, and Tone Festival\, Toronto amongst others. Their debut album Impermanence was released with Dinzu Artefacts in 2022. Their new recording\, Echo of Being / Grace in Rot channels the weight of modern atrocities—from systemic violence to the relentless barrage of traumatic imagery in digital spaces. The record challenges listeners to confront these overwhelming realities\, transforming mourning into a shared act of resistance and healing. It reclaims humanity amidst the unimaginable\, offering a space for reflection and resilience. The music weaves syncopated grooves\, cathartic outbursts\, and meditative drones\, blending South Asian vocal traditions with textured\, treated percussion to create a devotional\, ritualistic sonic space. \nMatt Evans is a drummer and composer known for his collaborative projects in the new music sphere with bands Tigue and Bearthoven\, and as an occasional collaborator with Deerhoof\, OHYUNG\, and Ayano Elson. His solo-work presents concept driven embodied improvisational performance through an eco-fictional lens and is the basis for his large ensemble Big Spin featuring Amirtha Kidambi on vocals and saxophone. This duo is Evans’ first fully free improvised foray\, finding a natural partner in Kidambi who is deeply immersed in the world of free improv and free jazz. \nAmirtha Kidambi is the bandleader of incendiary protest group Elder Ones\, and has duos with improvisers including Luke Stewart\, Darius Jones\, Matteo Liberatore and Maria Grand\, and is a performer and collaborator in Mary Halvorson’s Code Girl\, various projects with William Parker and in Robert Ashley’s “New Band”. \nStrider (Joanna Mattrey & Steven Long): \nJoanna Mattrey is a violist working in free improvisation\, new music\, and classical music. She uses extended techniques\, modern compositional approaches\, and electronic alterations to challenge the conventions of the viola. Joanna creates an embodied performance practice centered on ceremony and ritual. Recent and upcoming releases include\, ‘Soulcaster’ (Notice Recordings\, 2023) ‘Strider’ (Dear Life Recs\, 2023) ‘Oracle’ (Relative Pitch Records\, 2022) ‘Dirge’ (Dear Life Recs 2021). Mattrey is a current Roulette Resident\, and past residencies include ISSUE Project Room\, Banff’s Creative Gesture for Composers and Choreographers\, 14th Street Y\, Wild Project\, and MoMa PS1’s ALLGOLD. Mattrey has performed with icons Tyshawn Sorey\, Henry Threadgill\, Marc Ribot\, John Zorn\, Mary Halvorson\, Billy Martin\, Elliott Sharpe\, Miya Masaoka\, and the International Contemporary Ensemble. \nSteven Long\, a lifelong New Yorker from Canarsie\, Brooklyn\, is an artist and organizer working with sound\, language\, and space. His interest in music began at age 11 when a derelict piece of furniture\, formerly known as a piano\, was moved into his family’s home. He studied composition at the Manhattan School of Music before receiving his BA in linguistics from the American University of Rome. He received an MMA in contemporary improvisation from the New England Conservatory of Music. \nThe Early: \nFormed in North Jersey in 2004\, The Early spans two decades\, two coastlines\, and an evolving lineup of multi- instrumentalists\, metabolizing the textural grandeur of post-rock\, the communicational intimacy of jazz improvisation\, and the patient grooves of minimalism\, refining a two decade-long extrasensory correspondence. The Early is currently Alex Lewis (guitars\, synthesizers) and Jake Nussbaum (drums\, electronics) \nAccessibility statement: Located on the 2nd floor up a steep flight of stairs.

SUMMARY:LUCIAN BAN & MAT MANERI: TRANSYLVANIAN DANCE (A MULTIMEDIA PERFORMANCE) + JAIR-RÔHM PARKER WELLS
DESCRIPTION:Lucian Ban & Matt Maneri: Transylvanian Dance (A multimedia performance) \nDrawing from their acclaimed 2024 ECM Records duo release Transylvanian Dance\, pianist Lucian Ban and violist Mat Maneri will re-imagine live through improvisation the Béla Bartók Field Recordings of early 20th Century folk songs from Transylvania bringing back to life century old songs using video projections featuring rare archival footage\, audio from the original Edison wax cylinder recordings\, handwritten manuscripts and photographs taken by Bartók himself in his field trips. \nThe 20th century Hungarian composer Béla Bartók loved the folk music of Transylvania in western Romania. He famously experienced an epiphany in 1904 when he heard an 18-year-old woman singing songs from her Transylvanian village and was soon on the road in search of more music. Between 1909 and 1917 he transcribed thousands of melodies\, recording hundreds of folk musicians on wax cylinders and would call the completion of his research into Transylvanian folk music\, as “my life’s goal”. The profound knowledge and beauty of these ancient folk songs will change forever his compositional vision. \nA century later\, two outstanding improvisers – violist Mat Maneri and pianist Lucian Ban – draw fresh inspiration from the music that fired Bartók’s imagination\, looking again at carols\, lamentations\, love songs\, dowry songs and more through their unique duo sound and improvisatory concept. \nCalled “A name to watch” by The Guardian and “one of the most gifted pianists to move to New York” (B. Gallanter\, Downtown Music Gallery)\, Lucian Ban is a Transylvanian born\, NYC based pianist & composer known for his amalgamations of Transylvanian folk with improvisation\, for his mining of 20th Century European classical music with jazz\, and for his pursue of a modern chamber jazz ideal. His music has been described as “emotionally ravishing” (Nate Chinen\, New York Times/WBGO)\, a “triumph of emotional and musical communication” (All About Jazz)\, “Unorthodox but mesmeringly beautiful” (The Guardian) and as holding an “alluring timelessness and strong life-force” (Downbeat Magazine). Lucian Ban has released 20 albums under his name for labels such as ECM\, Sunnyside Records\, CIMP\, Clean Feed featuring a wide array of ensembles and some of the most important jazz musicians of today. \nViolist and composer Mat Maneri is a master of improvisation. He follows in the footsteps of stellar improvisers Paul Bley and Paul Motian with a sound that is distinctly his own and developed over years of discovery and practice. Considered as one of the original and compelling musicians of exploratory music\, Maneri has collaborated with countless musicians including Cecil Taylor\, Evan Parker\, Lucian Ban\, and Craig Taborn\, among others. Pianist Matt Shipp called him “one of the five greatest improvisers on the planet.” \nThe evolution of Maneri’s remarkable and individual sound began with his initial forays into classical violin. His discovery of Baroque music and his explorations of modern classical and improvisation led him to develop his own practices. Through the influence of his father\, woodwind player and educator Joe Maneri\, he was able to find a way of vocalizing on the violin or viola in his own unique manner\, channeling Ben Webster and Miles Davis. \nJair-Rôhm Parker Wells : \nJair-Rohm Parker Wells is an American bassist and sound sculptor with a career spanning over four decades. He played with the influential German band Embryo and has collaborated with artists like Bob Belden\, Tony Scott\, and Karl Berger. A founding member of Machine Gun and creator of the Meeting Interdisciplinary Arts Festival in Stockholm. Born in Tacoma\, WA\, and raised in Germany\, Wells has had a profound influence on free jazz and experimental music. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom.

SUMMARY:JON MUELLER + TOM LECKY: ALL COLORS PRESENT\, ERIK RUIN'S OMINOUS CLOUD ENSEMBLE & CHRISTINA GESUALDI/JESSE KUDLER DUO
DESCRIPTION:JON MUELLER + TOM LECKY: ALL COLORS PRESENT A sound and visual meditation \nJon Mueller’s singular performance idiom is an awe-inspiring display of elegant athleticism\, preternatural focus\, brute restraint\, and ecstatic\, monastic reverie. Paired with Tom Lecky’s photographs\, it becomes a deliberate focus on form\, shape and detail. It requires and demands a state of inner quietude from witnesses. Yet\, from this seemingly metronomic exercise blossoms every possible tint and hue of infinite spectral sound. \nMueller studied jazz drumming with Hal Russell at Columbia College in Chicago\, and singing with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela at the Kirana Center for Indian Classical Music in New York. A prolific performer\, he tours extensively and has appeared at festivals and venues throughout the United States\, Canada\, England\, Europe and Japan. \nTom Lecky has worked in photography\, music (as Hallock Hill)\, the book arts\, prose and poetry writing\, and literary criticism. His creative work concentrates on memory\, place\, and environment\, the work of the imagination\, perception\, and the intersections of abstraction and representation. He often interweaves appropriated texts and images with his own\, evoking a conversation with the history of book design and illustration. \nThe relaunched Table of the Elements label will be releasing a physical document of “All Colors Present” \nErik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble: \nErik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble is an ever-evolving\, collectively-improvising large ensemble for projections and music\, led by visual artist Erik Ruin\, recently lauded by the New York Times for his “spell-binding cut-paper animations.” Erik manipulates intricate paper-cuts and painted films on overhead projectors to create abstract landscapes and fragmentary scenes that are nonetheless charged with meaning\, merging with music that ranges from dark atmospherics to ecstatic peaks of dissonance. Members of the ensemble include a rotating cast of Philly’s finest musicians\, who have collaborated with everyone from Anthony Braxton to the Sun Ra Arkestra to Bardo Pond. For this show Ominous Cloud are DM Hotep (Sun Ra Arkestra etc) guitar\, Matt Engle (Feeler Gauge etc) bass\, Myles Donovan (A Stick and A Stoneetc) viola & harp\, Scott Verrastro (Kohoutek etc) drums & Julius Masri (Spectral Forces etc) electronics. \nChristina Gesualdi & Jesse Kudler: \nThe duo of Christina Gesualdi and Jesse Kudler explores the inter-dependence of movement and sound\, with the boundaries between dancer and accompanist deliberately troubled; hierarchies between audio and visual constantly shift as byproducts of either medium become examined or picked up for elaboration in the other. The duo has been performing in art galleries\, dance spaces\, and concert venues since 2018. Christina Gesualdi is a Philadelphia-based dancer\, choreographer\, improviser and teacher. She has danced in projects of Annie Wilson\, Dawn Pratson\, Megan Bridge\, Curt Haworth\, and Nicole Bindler. All into the process soup: attending to sensation\, gentleness\, listening\, failing/flailing\, queering\, patience\, indirectness and collaboration. Christina is a past member of Mascher Space and a community member at The Art Room Studio. Jesse Kudler is a musician\, composer\, performer\, and sound artist who plays and works with guitar\, electronics\, pipe organ\, recordings\, synthesizers\, radios\, tapes\, movement\, and text. His work is based in listening\, improvisation\, and collaboration (with people\, devices\, sites\, and spaces) to explore ambiguous affects\, perception\, time\, authorship\, intention\, agency\, and modes and practices of listening. \naccessibility: space is on the second floor up a flight of stairs.

SUMMARY:John Coltrane 99th Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:On October 10\, the Coltrane family and Ars Nova Workshop\, with support from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund of the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, will host a public celebration at the John Coltrane House at 1511 North 33rd Street in Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. \nThe event marks the launch of a long-awaited restoration and revitalization project for the National Historic Landmark\, where Coltrane lived from 1952 to 1958. During these years\, Coltrane studied with Philadelphia teacher Dennis Sandole\, toured with Earl Bostic and Johnny Hodges\, and joined Miles Davis’s “First Great Quintet.” In 1957\, he returned to the house to overcome addiction and experienced a spiritual awakening that gave rise to his first masterpiece\, Blue Train. \nThe October 10 event will feature live music\, tributes from cultural leaders\, and a public unveiling of plans to restore the house as a center for education\, community\, and creative programming. \nThat evening\, Ravi Coltrane joins us at Solar Myth with his trio\, featuring Grammy-awarded multi-instrumentalist\, bassist and educator\, Anthony Tidd and the incomparable drummer/composer Timothy Angulo.

SUMMARY:Ravi Coltrane Trio: John Coltrane 99th Birthday Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join Coltrane House Philadelphia & Ars Nova Workshop for an extraordinary evening as the Ravi Coltrane Trio honors the 99th birthday of saxophone giant John Coltrane. This performance is the centerpiece of a full-day celebration and serves as a benefit for the urgent preservation needs of the Coltrane House in Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood. \nLocated at 1511 North 33rd Street\, the modest rowhome where Coltrane lived from 1952–1958 is a National Historic Landmark and a site of profound artistic and spiritual transformation. Within its walls\, Coltrane practiced with relentless devotion\, welcomed fellow musicians\, and endured both personal struggle and renewal—culminating in his breakthrough masterpiece Blue Train (1957). From this North Philadelphia home\, Coltrane rose from an itinerant sideman to a visionary artist whose music reshaped the course of modern jazz. \nOn October 10\, his son Ravi Coltrane—himself a celebrated saxophonist\, bandleader\, and torchbearer of his father’s legacy—brings his trio to Solar Myth to honor this history and propel it forward. \nProceeds from this event directly support the stabilization and restoration of the Coltrane House\, ensuring that this vital landmark remains a source of inspiration for future generations.
