SUMMARY:Invisible Scissors\, Alice Cohen & Built by Scriabin
DESCRIPTION:Invisible Scissors: \nInvisible Scissors is an experimental duo formed out of NYC’s underground film community with previous projects in film\, music\, zines and expanded cinema performance. \nRachael Guma’s practice stems from work in foley sound. She plays with amplified objects made of metal and wood\, as well as a rotary phone\, theremin and other electronics. Sarah Halpern sings and plays electric guitar\, incorporating straight forward chord progressions as well as extended techniques based on ways of touching. Together they create a broad range of sounds rooted in physicality. \nAlice Cohen: \nAlice Cohen is a musician and visual artist based in Brooklyn\, NY. \nStarting out in Philly during the Sound of Philadelphia disco era\, she began releasing music in the late 1970s after entering a local radio contest. In 1979 she had her first release with Philly funk band Fun City\, “Save the Best for Last” (Chrysalis Records)\, and in 1982 wrote the song “Deetour” for Atlantic Records’ disco singer Karen Young. In the 80’s she was in the synth-pop band The Vels (Polygram Records)\, and in the 90’s she sang and played bass with grunge band Die Monster Die (Roadrunnner Records). \nIn recent years she has released a series of self-produced solo LPs on independent labels such as Olde English Spelling Bee\, Sixteen Tambourines (Tokyo)\, and NNA Tapes. To date – Cohen has released 7 solo LPs\, her 8th – “Archaeology” – comes out in October 2025. \nIn addition to her musical output\, Cohen is also a visual artist known primarily for her work in stop motion collage animation. She has created numerous music videos\, and her work has been shown in galleries and screenings worldwide. \nBuilt by Scriabin: \nBuilt by Scriabin brings together a group of long-time collaborators to explore the outer boundaries of the Cosmic American Folk landscape\, channeling songwriter Jim Strong’s instincts for noise\, paranoid psychedelia\, and surrealism into meticulously crafted full-band arrangements. Their sound has been described as “Leonara Carrington does the basement tapes” (Wire Magazine). After its beginnings as a short-lived musical saw orchestra\, the project has evolved into something strangely melodic—even catchy—seemingly far removed from the Himalayan foothills where the visionary composer Alexander Scriabin imagined immersive environments of sound and light as a means of accelerating human evolution. Wait and see. Strong has been active in underground music for two decades\, performing in projects as varied as Melkings\, Weyes Blood\, Eyes of the Amaryllis\, and Aponia A.D. In addition to building homemade musical instruments\, he works across a range of media as a visual artist. He is joined by Jordan Burgis\, Jacob Brunner\, Gabe Romero\, and possibly other special guests. \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.

SUMMARY:Spite of Darkness
DESCRIPTION:Presented in Collaboration with Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture \nSpite of Darkness: \nSpite of Darkness is a Detroit-based experimental ensemble led by Palestinian-American composer and violinist Mike Khoury. Built on a unique structural foundation of two violins and two drummers\, the quartet explores the intersection of contemporary classical\, avant-jazz\, and Arab-American musical traditions. \nThe group—which features Khoury and violinist Indira Edwards—is known for its raw\, percussive energy and intricate melodic interplay. The drum chairs are held by Bill Dixon alum\, Ben Hall\, and Ali Allen Colding who worked with James Blood Ulmer\, Sam Sanders and Dorothy Ashby. Spite of Darkness functions as a vehicle for Khoury’s compositions\, challenging traditional genre boundaries and offering a modern\, improvisational take on the Detroit experimental scene. \nvenue is wheelchair accessible \nAdditional support for this event provided by mediaThe foundation.

SUMMARY:Cosmic Music: The Life\, Art and Transcendence of Alice Coltrane
DESCRIPTION:Please join Ars Nova Workshop to celebrate the release of journalist Andy Beta’s essential new biography\, Cosmic Music: The Life\, Art and Transcendence of Alice Coltrane\, featuring a performance by keyboardist Surya Botofasina\, at Solar Myth on Thursday\, June 18\, 2026. \nIn Cosmic Music\, music journalist Andy Beta traces the life\, career and legacy of pianist\, organist\, harpist and composer Alice Coltrane\, one of the most misunderstood artists of the last sixty years. The first full biography of this remarkable\, groundbreaking artist is an elegant\, deeply researched corrective to the historical—and critical—record. It elevates Coltrane to her proper place alongside her husband\, the iconic saxophonist John Coltrane\, as one of the greatest musical visionaries of the 20th century\, and also as a singular artist in Western music\, one who became a spiritual leader in her lifetime. \nTo celebrate the biography’s release\, Ars Nova will present keyboardist Surya Botofasina\, who was raised as a spiritual student of Alice Coltrane at the Sai Anantam Ashram in Southern California. Her musical and religious teachings continue to have a profound effect on the keyboardist\, whose career has since gone on to take in acting stints in the TV series Vinyl and Boardwalk Empire alongside a diverse range of musical collaborations with the likes of Reggie Workman\, Joey Bada$$\, Gangstarr’s GURU\, Amel Larrieux\, N’Dea Davenport\, Georgia Anne Muldrow\, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. \n\n\n\n\nThis is an 21+ event.

SUMMARY:Sasha Berliner
DESCRIPTION:Originally from San Francisco\, California\, Sasha Berliner is a rock drummer turned vibraphonist who studied under Stefon Harris. At 21\, she became the youngest individual in the poll’s history to top the “Rising Star – Vibraphone” category in the DownBeat Critics’ Poll. She has continued to be voted one of the top ten vibraphonists in the poll every year since 2021. Writing in All About Jazz\, critic Paul Rauch said\, “Berliner is in the firmament of the here and now in modern jazz\, and appears likely to occupy that upper stratosphere for some time to come.” \nThe politically charged\, style-blending\, alternative sound of Berliner’s 2019 debut\, Azalea\, employed digital effects\, synths\, audio speech samples\, and strings\, bringing together her diverse musical background and influences. Since then she has released the live outing Tabula Rasa and two further studio offerings\, Onyx (2022) and Fantome (2025). In addition to performing with her own band\, Berliner has recorded and performed live with such renowned musicians as Tyshawn Sorey\, Nicholas Payton\, Christian McBride\, and Cecile Mclorin Salvant.

SUMMARY:Lesley Mok\, Koof Ibi & LN Celestine
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented with The Low Pass: \nLesley Mok: \nLesley Mok is a New York City-based percussionist and sound artist. Their work is guided by a continual search for the connection between the mundane and the divine\, the experience and manipulation of time\, and a desire to capture emotional dissonance and complexity. Lesley’s ongoing explorations with composition and improvisation are most notably documented in their debut album The Living Collection (released May 2023 on American Dreams Records). The album\, described as “an exquisite and stimulating work” by All About Jazz and “a singularly personal statement” by Jazz Trail Magazine\, was named International Debut Album of the Year at the 2024 Deutscher Jazz Preis. As a collaborator\, Lesley has shared the stage with Tomeka Reid\, William Parker\, Ingrid Laubrock\, Marilyn Crispell\, Craig Taborn\, Myra Melford\, Mary Halvorson\, and Rafiq Bhatia among others. They have performed throughout the Americas\, Asia\, and Europe. \nTheir new release Transient combines drums and electronics to paint a landscape that explores the sculptural qualities of beat-making\, ambience\, and movement. Inspired by free jazz\, noise\, sounds from the natural environment\, and artists like Autechre and Robert Hood\, this record traverses a soundscape that goes from kinetic maximalism to delicate stillness\, creating a listening experience that bends and warps time. \nKoof Ibi: \nKoof Ibi is a multi-instrumentalist in the Philadelphia area. You can find him strolling down Broad Street with brass bands like The West Philadelphia Orchestra\, or sharing the stage with rockstars like Japanese Breakfast for their hometown gigs. Koof has played every genre of music Philly has to offer and incorporates all of it into his own musical style. When he’s not playing music he’s filming and editing the Random Tea Sessions\, a music video series highlighting other musicians in Philadelphia\, or he’s behind the lens covering live shows for the WXPN. \nAt his solo shows Koof combines live instruments\, loops\, and guitar pedals to create surprising soundscapes and sonic liberation. \nLN Celestine: \n“LN Celestine met us at our level\, crouched on the floor like a catcher as she powered up her circular arc of small electronics and effects pedals. Through live looping\, Celestine built up a ragged battalion of drones\, bowing her violin and singing wordless notes into a microphone in sparse iterations. For a crowd dressed almost exclusively in browns and blacks\, this sort of Realtree hunting-cap ambient fit right in (…) The Grouper aesthetic tells us that the end is near\, that the technology we so desperately cling to will soon be dumped in the woods next to yesteryear’s tractor\, rusted and mossed over\, and it clearly resonates with this generation of art-minded young people who have only ever read about prosperity. LN Celestine offered a peaceful space for decay.”-YellowGreenRed \nvenue is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Grex\, Ashé Mystics & 90eeze
DESCRIPTION:Grex: \nKarl Evangelista – guitar\, voice\, drums\, samples\, misc. \nRei Scampavia – synth\, voice\, drums\, misc. \nGrex is an art rock/experimental music duo based out of Oakland\, California. In biological terms\, a “grex” is an entity composed of several smaller organisms. Grex (the band) explores the meeting point between surreal songcraft and the dark outer reaches of experimental music. The group has been called an “otherworldly experience” (Eugene Weekly) and “true genre warping music” (KFJC)\, recalling at turns the ecstatic energy of John Coltrane\, the electronic squall of Death Grips\, and the lilting indie rock of Mitski. \nGrex has performed at Myra Melford’s New Frequnices Festival\, The Switchboard Music Festival\, The Sonic Circuits Festival (DC)\, and the United States of Asian America Festival\, and organized multiple online Lockdown Festivals in the midst of the 2020-2021 coronavirus outbreak. The band has worked with Fred Frith\, Tony Levin\, Marshall Trammell (Black Spirituals)\, Scott Amendola (Nels Cline\, TJ Kirk)\, and Asian Improv aRts\, and Evangelista is an active improvising guitarist alongside the likes of Andrew Cyrille\, Louis Moholo-Moholo\, Oliver Lake\, Ben Goldberg\, Alexander Hawkins\, and Trevor Watts. \nAshé Mystics: \nThe Ashé Mystics are Kevin Diehl\, Julius Masri & Joshua Marquez. They create a world of sound with electronic circuitry\, improv and percussive underpinnings. \nKevin Diehl is a Musician\, Composer\, Arts Organizer\, Drummer\, and Percussionist. Among his current projects is a new trio featuring Chad Taylor and Joe Chambers. Their eponymously titled debut record\, Onilu\, is due for release in Fall 2023. It features compositions by all three multi -instrumentalists. Onilu is a Yoruba word meaning “drummers.” Another project is Justice: The Vocal Works of Oliver Lake. A vocal trio joins his ensemble Sonic Liberation Front in performing the works of this widely acclaimed composer. \nJulius Masri is a Philadelphia based multi instrumentalist\, and performer/composer for the city’s dance community at large. His music focuses on improvisatory methods and syncretic / linguistic exchanges within various musical languages including Jazz\, Metal\, AfroCuban\, Experimental Noise\, and Arabic music. Born in Tripoli\, Lebanon\, he moved to the States in 1990 and picked up drumming a year later. He studied with Philadelphia instructors Carl Mottola\, Elaine Hoffman-Watts\, and as an undergraduate at Bard College\, with AACM’s Thurman Barker\, Richard Teitelbaum\, and Joan Tower. Julius plays drums\, circuit modified Casio keyboards\, Oud\, Kamancheh (aka Rabab\, Spike Fiddle)\, and various other instruments. \nJoshua Marquez is a Filipino-American composer and activist whose award-winning music explores the liminal space between tone and noise as a means to investigate the complexities and duality of Asian American identity. Searing a sonic imprint of cultural identity\, his tranquil investigations of the noise spectrum represent the internal conflicts of multiculturalism and the struggles of alienation and assimilation through the fusion and fission of disparate timbres. Hailed as “cutting-edge” (The Gazette)\, “haunting” (The Daily Iowan)\, and “creepy” (Fanfare Magazine)\, Marquez’s polemic deconstruction of sound is consumed by ever-evolving rituals of disintegrated perspectives from a postcolonial lens. \n90eeze: \n90eeze is a spiritual improvisor’s collaborative\, described by The Midbrow as “a mixture of Flying Luttenbachers\, John Zorn\, Ascension-era John Coltrane influences\, and maybe a little bit of Black MIDI. Consisting of guitar\, drums/percussion\, saxophone/flute\, bass\, and MIDI flute/programming\, it was like nothing was off the table with this band.” \nAlchemical\, Transcendent\, hoe out the soul… Express the inexpressible\, pure catharsis… \n90eeze was formed in early 2024 by Kyle Balles (drum/percussion) & Connor Eccles (guitar). Soon after Quinn Collins (bass) joined as the pervasive / constant 3rd member. \nOther auxiliary/interchangeable members Kyle Press (sax)\, Pureply (electronics/midi flute)\, Paul Geiss (trumpet/electronics)\, Dan Kochersberger (sax). \nAccessibility statement: Located on the 2nd floor up a steep flight of stairs. Ramp (also steep) in back available\, please contact us for more information.

SUMMARY:NOMON Mikel Patrick Avery
DESCRIPTION:NOMON is an electro-percussion duo of sisters Shayna and Nava Dunkelman\, united by a shared vision to expand how percussion can speak\, move\, and connect. They are driven by curiosity\, exploring rhythm not only as sound\, but as energy\, gesture\, and emotion. They believe percussion can embody both structure and freedom\, precision and vulnerability. \nAfter spending years apart working on their own unique voices\, they came together in 2018 to form NOMON. \nBorn and raised in Tokyo\, Japan to an Indonesian mother and an American father\, the sisters became multi-instrumentalists performing alongside their mother\, a musician and composer active in Asia and the Middle East. \nOpener: Mikel Patrick Avery \nA percussionist\, composer/improvisor\, filmmaker\, photographer\, and designer of modern pedal and electronic instruments\, artist Mikel Patrick Avery considers this multiplicity as one practice: creative problem solving. Gifted in various musical genres\, his rigorous work of performance\, improvisation\, composition\, and experimentation spans jazz\, experimental\, and electronic music. With his deep understanding of the historical and contemporary significance of various genres\, he explores the uses of improvisation to navigate uncertainty\, imagine alternative futures\, and inspire social cohesion. Avery has collaborated and performed with numerous ensembles including Natural Information Society\, Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra\, Marshall Allen’s Ghost Horizons\, Tomeka Reid\, the Jeff Parker Quartet\, Kurt Vile\, Big Thief\, and Theaster Gates’ ensemble\, The Black Monks of Mississippi. \n

SUMMARY:Ishmael Ali/Will Greene/Lily Finnegan Trio & Crowmeat Bob/Ian McColm duo
DESCRIPTION:Ishmael Ali\, Will Greene & Lily Finnegan Trio: \nAn ensemble defined by restlessness and sonic curiosity\, this improbable improvising trio rides the edge between sonorous melodies\, atonal outbursts\, and tilted grooves — creating music that feels both elemental and unpredictable. Individually\, each artist in the trio brings a distinct voice: Will Greene’s saxophone moves effortlessly between melodious phrasing and jagged rupture; Ishmael Ali’s cello oscillates between textural articulations\, idiomatic gestures\, and rhythmic grooves; and Lily Finnegan’s percussive approach spans pliant\, groove‑oriented dialogue to fractured\, pointillist soundscapes\, providing a platform for both abstraction and lyricism. Together\, their interplay coalesces into a dynamic conversation that propels the trio into spaces at once visceral\, exploratory\, and delightfully capricious. \nIshmael Ali is a dynamic cellist\, guitarist\, improviser\, and composer based out of Chicago. His work centers on exploring sound through improvisation\, experimentation\, composition\, and collaboration\, focusing on a wide array of idiomatic approaches in an ever-changing\, always-growing list of projects informed by diverse influences.. He is leader or co-leader of a plethora of working projects including Hearsay\, Ensemble Ziraph\, and Akjai \, currently performs with Kahil El Zabar and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and has performed and recorded with Avreeayl Ra\, Josh Berman\, Jim Baker\, Fred Jackson\, Ed Wilkerson\, Angel Bat Dawid\, Jason Stein\, Tom Skinner\, and many more. \nWill Greene plays guitar and saxophone and currently resides in Chicago\, after spending many years as an active member of various Brooklyn\, NY music communities. His musical practice explores time-bending\, pitch excursions\, and interactive notions. In addition to an active schedule of jazz and improvisation adjacent activities\, Will is a member of avant-thrash outfit TRIGGER\, italo-prog orchestra TREDICI BACCI\, and leads the CHICAGO MICROBES. He is also proud of and grateful for his past and ongoing collaborations that have taken him across the United States and several continents. A woefully abbreviated list of these collaborators: John Zorn\, Joe Morris\, Raf Vertessen\, Elias Stemeseder\, Zoe Christiansen\, Kenny Wollesen\, Max Jaffe\, Henry Fraser and Carrie Furniss. \nLily Finnegan is a Chicago-based drummer\, composer\, improviser\, and organizer. She was spotlighted by The Chicago Reader as a “Chicagoan of Note” and included in The Chicago Sun Times “Next Generation of Jazz Musicians.” She leads her own quartet\, Heat On\, which released their debut album on Cuneiform Records. Other projects include improvisational duo with gabby fluke-mogul and playing in Ken Vandermark’s Edition Redux. Finnegan has collaborated with wide ranging artists including James Brandon Lewis\, Macie Stewart\, Bill Orcutt\, Edward Wilkerson\, Nick Dunston\, Tashi Dorji\, Lia Kohl\, Patrick Shiroishi\, Brandon Seabrook\, and Shanta Nurullah. She is a member of the Catalytic Sound Collective and co-curates the Option Series. In 2026 she became a Next Jazz Legacy awardee. \nCrowmeat Bob & Ian McColm duo: \nCrowmeat Bob is self- and friend-taught on guitar and reeds\, composes for many different kinds of ensembles\, and has played in many bands and in improvised or otherwise situations with hundreds of musicians over the years. He once saw Sonny Sharrock play at the old 930 Club. \nIan G. McColm is a multi-instrumentalist\, improviser and composer residing in Philadelphia\, PA. He has contributed drums\, synthesizer\, guitar and an array of other instruments to releases by Glasspack\, Heart of the Ghost\, Elkhorn\, Daniel Bachman\, Cartoon\, and Center. As a member of numerous live ensembles\, McColm has performed at Moogfest\, Hopscotch Music Festival\, Sonic Circuits Festival of Experimental Music\, Elastic Arts’ Exposure Series\, The DC Jazz Festival\, Black Mountain College’s Interlude AVL Festival\, Catalytic Sound Festival\, and as a part of Experimental Sound Studio’s The Quarantine Concerts. Each ambulatory program is attuned to the here and now of its site — birds\, bugs\, water\, and wind — creating a moment of shared awareness and presence. \nFollow the Sound events are free and have been hosted at various sites throughout the Philadelphia area including John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum\, the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education\, Stoneleigh: a natural garden\, and more\, each led by a naturalist with expertise of the local ecosystem. \nEach ~90-minute program entails walking a distance of less than one mile\, usually on flat\, accessible terrain. A wide range of diverse musicians have participated on an array of flutes\, electronics\, violins\, viola da gamba\, and more\, in solo and impromptu duo formats. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nPaul Giess is a Philadelphia-based musician\, producer\, and educator whose versatile musicianship crosses traditional boundaries. Described by Downbeat Magazine as delivering “lyrical\, highly expressive trumpet work\,” Paul brings this quality to his performances with artists including Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, Grant Calvin Weston\, Yolanda Wisher\, and Guthrie Ramsey.\n2024 was a landmark year for Paul’s career. At the top of the year\, Paul was featured on Jamaaladeen Tacuma’s album “The Lighthouse” alongside Odean Pope\, Grant Calvin Weston and Marc Cary. Paul was also a featured composer for a WHYY podcast\, Philadelphia Revealed\, composing a variety of music in addition to the theme which he wrote with a long time collaborator Matthew Jernigan. Later that year\, Paul joined Jamaaladeen Tacauma’s Groove Al a Moroc at the Timitar Festival in Agadir Morocco. That same summer\, Paul joined Jamaaladeen again in his Solar System Boogie Band at the Lancaster Ave Jazz Festival in Philadelphia. Towards the end of the year\, Paul was awarded a grant from Scribe Video to help fund an oral history project he has been pursuing with Chrisitiana Jackson\, Director of African Studies at Rutgers University. By recording interviews with elders from the Philadelphia jazz scene such as Andy Aaron\, Lovett Hines\, and Cullen Knight they aim to document oral history while telling the stories of historic jazz clubs in the city. \nHis discography as leader includes “Hymns Vol. 1” (Ropeadope Records\, 2021)\, featuring vocalist V. Shayne Frederick\, and his debut “U Suite U” (2014). Most Recently\, Paul has been releasing music from live performances of a new project\, Untethered. This group explores the unknown through spontaneous creative composition using blends of sound design\, funk\, and energetic sonic interactions with veteran drummer Grant Calvin Weston alongside emerging Philadelphia talents\, Lee Clarke and Timothy Ragsdale. \nAs a composer\, Paul received the 2018 McKnight Visiting Composer Residency from the American Composers Forum. Paul held a two month residency at MSS collaborating with artists with developmental disabilities\, which culminated in a concert featuring the artists from their program. Additionally “Prayer for Mimi” appears in the Philadelphia Real Book. \nPaul’s work also ventures into the world of theatre. In December of 2015 Paul was the trumpet player in the critically acclaimed performance of the musical Black Nativity\, hosted by Theater Horizon in Norristown. Black Nativity won a Barrymore award for Best Musical Ensemble. In January of 2015 Paul traveled to New Orleans Louisiana to be the musical director for an original theater work\, “AMERICANA”. Most recently Paul produced performed and directed a two person show included in Urban Movements Arts’ offerings for the 2024 Philadelphia Fringe Festival. Rubr Duki Dance Party\, is a piece of immersive theatre which guides audiences through a surreal world to help them discover their inner rubber ducky by way of drawing\, writing\, dancing\, quacking and playing with rubber duckies. \nAs an educator\, Paul teaches through Artsmart\, Mill Creek School\, and The Concept School. He came to these positions following seven years at the Philadelphia Clef Club where he served as Education Coordinator under Lovett Hines\, a prolific jazz educator. Concurrently Paul was also implementing a music program for adults with developmental disabilities at the Center for Creative Works\, establishing Pop Pop Pop Records\, and producing concerts that showcase their talents in the process. \nMarquise Lindsey-Bradley is a clarinetist\, arts administrator\, and Philadelphia native who uses music as a foundation for leadership and community service. He joined PCMS as Marketing & Engagement Director in the 2023-24 season\, where he oversees communications for its 50 annual concerts and fosters partnerships with young professionals\, higher education institutions\, corporations\, and community groups. \nMarquise also serves as the Creative Program Coordinator for the Olney Culture Lab\, of CultureTrust Greater Philadelphia\, where he curates the Live at Roots Garden concert series and the annual Jazz on the Green music festival. \nA passionate advocate for musical literacy and diversity in the arts\, Marquise has gained recognition for his work in the field. He has presented to local and national audiences through collaborations with organizations such as the LA Philharmonic\, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra\, the Sphinx Organization\, and World Cafe Live. He has also been featured on podcasts\, including The Entrepreneurial Musician with Andrew Hitz\, Audio Olney\, and Tacet No More with Yumi Kendall and Joseph Conyers. \nMarquise holds a Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music\, with a Minor in Business Management from Case Western Reserve University. In 2023\, he earned a certificate in Orchestra Management from The Juilliard School in collaboration with the League of American Orchestras. \nIn his free time\, Marquise enjoys spending time in nature\, exploring Philadelphia’s bar and restaurant scene\, and roller skating with the Philly/Jersey-based crew\, Great On Skates. \nTony Croasdale started birding at about nine years old.
