SUMMARY:SOUND TYPE: Burnt Pink x John Morrison
DESCRIPTION:SOUND TYPE 2025 will close with Burnt Pink\, born in 2018 when longtime friends Chris Acree (Strange Parts\, Upholstery)\, Corey Carris Duncan (Pattern Is Movement\, Oh! Pears\, Strange Parts) and Martin Khoa Sweeney (MegaMega) began performing improvised live scores at the Art Dept in Philadelphia. A few short months later\, the mind meld was complete when Martin’s brother Mark Pham (aka Swarvy)\, visiting from LA\, joined. \nThey improvised and recorded a soundtrack to Stan Brakhage’s Dog Star Man\, music which would comprise their first LP\, Afterlife Dub. Since then\, they have continued to release more improvised ‘rugged healing music’ and live recordings at a breakneck pace\, including most recently\, Perfectionist\, a 7-track album recorded in a single session on Chris’ birthday. Burnt Pink was emphatically handpicked by guest writer John Morrison. \nJohn Morrison is a DJ\, radio host\, and music journalist\, covering Philadelphia’s music scene for over 25 years. Morrison is currently working on a history of Hip-Hop sampling presentation for The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music and writing a comprehensive biography of Philadelphia R&B legends\, Boyz II Men. Stay tuned for more information about the public seminar! \nSOUND TYPE Music Festival is a multi-part series of live concerts and public seminars that pair musicians with writers to reflect on music practice and critical feedback pushing against category\, form and stereotype. Join us at all five groundbreaking and genre-defying live events and discussions through 2025!

SUMMARY:Stuart Bogie & Buck McDaniel-Piano & Clarinet
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present composer-clarinetist Stuart Bogie and composer-keyboardist Buck McDaniel performing two concerts in one day\, continuing their acclaimed collaboration that began with the 2024 project November Variations. \nAt University Lutheran\, they turn to clarinet and piano. This pairing invites rhythmic nuance and spontaneous turns showcasing both composed works and improvisations highlighting each composer’s individual voice and another view of their shared improvisational language. \nFirst conceived in 2024\, November Variations began as a series of five improvised 9 a.m. concerts at New York’s Church of Our Saviour\, recorded live to capture each composition as it unfolded. The resulting five-part album is being released in parts leading up to the 2025 five-concert residency in Manhattan\, November 17 – 21. \nThe November 14 performances in Philadelphia offer an opportunity to experience the duo’s ethos of stillness\, connection\, and sonic exploration in two distinct instrumental settings. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nComposer and multi-instrumentalist Stuart Bogie was born in Evanston\, Illinois. He studied for 6 Years with Gary Onstad and at the Music Center of the North Shore before attending Interlochen Art Academy and the University of Michigan where he studied with Debra Chodacki. He is the recipient of a Meet the Composer grant and he composed the score for the Oscar nominated documentary How To Survive a Plague\, featuring performances by the Kronos Quartet. He has written for film\, television\, commercials\, and the stage. He has released 9 albums as a leader. \nDuring the pandemic lock-down\, Bogie performed a daily series of improvised solo clarinet pieces using the accompaniment drone tracks sent to him by over 50 different collaborators including Arcade Fire\, Richard Reed Parry\, Colin Stetson\, Sam Cohen\, Josh Kaufman\, Peter Murray\, E Dan\, Craig Finn\, Ryan Sawyer\, Dave Harrington\, Yuka Honda\, and James Murphy. Began in the second week of lock-down\, the series ran for over 150 days consecutively and has been collected into four volumes\, with more volumes in the works. An LP\, Morningside\, presenting 2 of the pieces made with James Murphy was released on October 27 on DFA records. This music is featured in a worldwide exhibition of photographs by Gregory Crewsden\, and can be heard in the documentary accompanying the exhibit. In July of 2023 Bogie premiered Morningside at Les Recontres d’Arles\, live scoring the documentary by Harper Glantz. His latest release is Patient Music\, a collaboration with longtime friends Josh Kaufman & Sam Cohen available now from Historical Fiction Records. \nBuck McDaniel is a composer\, conductor\, keyboardist\, and improviser based in New York City. His music blends the American Minimalist tradition with a personal storytelling practice. McDaniel’s work often explores site\, text\, and memory\, engaging both concert\, sacred\, and non-traditional spaces with equal depth and curiosity. \nHis compositions have been performed and broadcast internationally\, including on NBC’s Saturday Night Live\, BBC Radio 3\, WQXR\, and NPR’s The Moth Radio Hour. His work appears in Oliver Hermanus’s film The History of Sound\, starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor\, which premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. A frequent collaborator\, McDaniel has worked with artists including Sam Smith\, Nico Muhly\, Sam Amidon\, and Stuart Bogie. \nMcDaniel is a former Kulas Composer Fellow at Cleveland Public Theatre\, and his projects have been supported by institutions such as the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA)\, the Mississippi Museum of Art\, and the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art. SUMMARY:Wonderful Sound 3: Cooper-Moore\, Bobby Zankel & Chad Taylor + Tropos
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with Warriors of Wonderful Sound. \nWonderful Sound 3: Cooper-Moore\, Bobby Zankel & Chad Taylor: \nAs a composer\, performer\, instrument builder/designer\, storyteller\, teacher\, mentor\, and organizer\, Cooper-Moore has been a major catalyst in the world of creative music for over 40 years. As a child prodigy Cooper-Moore played piano in churches near his birthplace in the Piedmont region of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. His performance roots in the realm of avant jazz music date to the NYC Loft Jazz era in the early/mid-70s. His first fully committed jazz group was formed in 1970 – the collective trio Apogee with David S. Ware and drummer Marc Edwards. Sonny Rollins asked them to open for him at the Village Vanguard in 1973 and a studio recording of this group was made in 1977 – issued as Birth of a Being on hatHut under Ware’s name in 1979. \nFollowing an evidently rather trying European tour with Ware\, Beaver Harris\, and Brian Smith in 1981\, Cooper-Moore returned home and completely destroyed his piano\, with a sledgehammer and fire in his backyard. He didn’t play piano again until some years after\, instead focusing his energies from 1981-1985 on developing and implementing curriculum to teach children through music via the Head Start program. \nReturning to New York in 1985\, he spent a great part of his creative time working and performing with theater and dance productions\, largely utilizing his hand-crafted instruments. It was not until the early 90s\, when William Parker asked him to join his group In Order To Survive\, that Cooper-Moore’s pianistic gifts were again regularly featured in the jazz context. In the early ‘aughts the group Triptych Myth was his own first regular working jazz group in decades and together they blazed some trails and released two albums. A destined creative re-union with David S. Ware in the Planetary Unknown quartet\, the Digital Primitives trio with Assif Tsahar & Chad Taylor\, and continued work with William Parker followed. Cooper-Moore’s creative life continues well-strong and unabated into the present day. He was the Lifetime Achievement Honoree at the 22nd iteration of Vision Festval\, NYC on May 29\, 2017. \nBobby Zankel began playing music at an early age\, soon favoring the alto saxophone. After studying at the University of Wisconsin\, he attended Berklee College Of Music\, then went on to attain a BA degree from Empire State College (State University of New York). In the early 70s\, he attracted favorable attention during a spell with Cecil Taylor’s Unit Core Ensemble. Concurrently\, Zankel’s reputation spread within the adventurous New York loft scene owing to performances with Ray Anderson\, Sunny Murray\, William Parker and others. From 1975\, Zankel became resident in Philadelphia where he raised his family meanwhile becoming a respected and in-demand sideman with many artists\, notably those associated with the city’s thriving jazz scene. Groups he was with in these years\, in Philadelphia and elsewhere\, include the Hank Mobley -Sonny Gillete Quintet\, Jymmie Merritt’s Forerunners\, Odean Pope’s Saxophone Choir\, and Ruth Naomi Floyd. He continued to work with Taylor\, including visiting Europe. As a performer\, Zankel delivers intricate virtuoso bop playing with an intensely emotional core. Zankel was also continuing with his studies\, now with Dennis Sandole\, becoming a skilled and significant composer. As leader and sideman he has appeared at numerous festivals. His compositions have been performed by Lester Bowie\, Coles\, Marilyn Crispell\, Pope\, Jamaaladeen Tacuma and others. \nIt’s hard to overstate Taylor’s contributions to improvised music over the past three decades. A composer\, scholar and educator as well as a capaciously inventive percussionist now living in Philadelphia\, Taylor is probably best known as co-founder of the Chicago Underground Duo with trumpeter Rob Mazurek (and the numerous Underground iterations that have spun off of that original partnership). A professional on the Chicago scene from the age of 16\, he became a rhythmic muse for many of the most celebrated artists in improvised music\, including Fred Anderson\, Pharoah Sanders\, Nicole Mitchell\, Matana Roberts\, Ken Vandermark\, Darius Jones\, James Brandon Lewis\, Jaimie Branch\, Derek Bailey\, Marc Ribot\, and Peter Brötzmann. He’s also led numerous acclaimed ensembles of his own\, though never a trio quite like the one documented on The Daily Biological. \nBorn in 1973 in Tempe\, Arizona\, Taylor grew up in Chicago and was shaped by the city’s wide open improvisational ethic. He earned a BFA in jazz performance from the New School and an MFA from Rutgers University in jazz research and history. He’s forged deep creative alliances with a dazzling array of artists\, including guitarist Jeff Parker\, multi-instrumentalist Cooper-Moore\, guitarist Marc Ribot\, and bassist Eric Revis. He doesn’t have many releases under his own name since Taylor has tended to work in co-led or collective situations\, but his compositions have been featured on dozens of albums. \nTropos: \nTropos is a collective ensemble of improviser-composers featuring four distinctive voices in Brooklyn’s creative music scene: Phillip Golub (piano)\, Ledah Finck (violin)\, Yuma Uesaka (clarinets)\, and Aaron Edgcomb (drums/percussion). Their peculiar instrumentation and collaborative approach are defining characteristics of their work as an ensemble. As recipients of Chamber Music America’s 2023 Ensemble Forward grant\, Tropos spent a year developing their forthcoming album Switches (Endectomorph Music) under the mentorship of acclaimed saxophonist and composer Darius Jones. Tropos’ members call their aesthetic “outer-space chamber music” for the way their compositions push the boundaries between new music\, jazz\, noise\, and beyond. \n“This collective of young composers and improvisers have built a metropolis that doesn’t feel like a destination for travelers unwilling to turn off GPS. A love of process and discovery seems to be driving this music. There are no selfie vibrations here\, just a fearless commitment to compositional intention and to the development of Tropos’ collective improvisational language. \nIn 1918\, Le Corbusier—an architect\, designer\, painter\, urban planner\, and writer—befriended the Cubist painter Amédée Ozenfant\, which led to the creation of the art movement Purism. Two principles of this movement are: art consists in the conception before anything else\, and technique is only a tool\, humbly at the service of the conception. Each compositional work on Switches embodies these two principles and what I believe makes this ensemble special. \nListen to this music fearlessly and embrace a new metropolis.” -Darius Jones \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.

SUMMARY:The Azar Lawrence Experience
DESCRIPTION:Azar Lawrence was a young music prodigy\, lovingly tutored by his mother\, who taught music and led their church choir. At age five\, he played violin in the Los Angeles Junior Symphony\, then viola\, but his ears were turned to the saxophone at age 13. Azar spent his teen years immersed in jazz at the home of his best friend\, none other than the late Reggie Golson\, son of the great composer/arranger/saxophonist\, Bennie Golson. From then on it was jazz\, jazz\, and more jazz!

SUMMARY:Arco Belo
DESCRIPTION:Arco Belo\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, November 11\, 2025 | 8:00pmAdd to cal\nGet Tickets\n\n\nThe Perch\n(2321 Emerald St\,\, Philadelphia\, PA. 19125)\n\n$15-25 sliding scale\n\n\nArco Belo:Arco Belo is a group of high-energy improvisers dedicated to redefining the concert form. Drawing its name from the words bow and bellow\, the ensemble captures an irreverent sound melding reeds\, strings\, and percussive timbres. Led by pianist\, accordionist\, and composer Simone Baron\, their adventurous compositions reimagine a sound at the junction of avant-garde chamber music\, creative jazz\, Brazilian music\, and Jewish diasporic music. Together\, they skip effortlessly from long-form neo-baroque string counterpoint to sludgy hip-hop pads. Post-romantic cadenzas collide in moments of spontaneous noise with reedy prepared piano; guttural bow noises and cascading plectrum bring color to plush hypnotic grooves and sharply angled linear phrases. Since 2016\, the ensemble has performed for audiences across the US\, including at The Kennedy Center\, Strathmore\, and Brevard Music Center. Arco Belo has toured the West Coast and Southeast to critical acclaim\, and won grants from South Arts / Jazz Roads\, the Maryland State Arts Council and Chamber Music America’s inaugural Performance Plus grant\, working with internationally acclaimed bassist and composer Linda May Han Oh. Their debut album\, The Space Between Disguises was released in November 2019 and lauded as editor’s pick in both Downbeat and JazzTimes magazines. In 2023 they will release their long-awaited second album\, featuring collaborations with bassist Petros Klampanis\, violinist Sara Caswell\, percussionists Keita Ogawa and John Hadfield\, and Christylez Bacon. \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street. \nThis show made possible by the Jazz Road grant of South Arts.

SUMMARY:The Bad Plus
DESCRIPTION:The Bad Plus are the ultimate originals – a democratic unit with a clear vision and a refusal to conform to convention. For over two decades they have played with spirit and adventure\, made their own rules and done so with a bold sense of creativity and intent. Avoiding easy categorization\, The Bad Plus has won critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide with their unique sound and flair for live performance. The Bad Plus continues to push boundaries as founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) embark on a new piano-less incarnation of the band with Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (tenor saxophone) – instigating a new wave of excitement and anticipation within the band that is re-energizing their sound and inspiration. The title of their second album in that configuration\, Complex Emotions\, comes from a phrase that Anderson and King have used since the early days of the band – a mission statement to describe the wide range of territory they’ve always explored. Just as calling its predecessor The Bad Plus made a statement about continuity in the midst of change\, finally branding an album with this long-held mantra declares that the reconfigured group has discovered ways to delve deeper and venture further.

SUMMARY:Beehive Cathedral Joseph Decosimo\, Luke Richardson\, and Cleek Schrey
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present American traditional music trio Joseph Decosimo\, Luke Richardson\, and Cleek Schrey performing music from their recent album Beehive Cathedral. \nJoseph Decosimo\, Luke Richardson\, and Cleek Schrey\, three of the most compelling musicians in the American traditional music scene\, explore traditional repertoires from Appalachia and the broader South\, gleaned from visits with older players\, field recordings\, vintage 78s\, and archival tune collections. Working with fiddle\, hardanger d’amore (a fiddle with sympathetic strings)\, banjos\, and a 19th-century pump organ\, the trio conveys both the sonic details of their instruments and a generous musical interplay rooted in a dozen years of collaboration. Their 2024 debut album Beehive Cathedral\, released on Dear Life Records\, presents resonant\, thoughtful\, and expansive explorations of Appalachian and American music. Irish fiddle luminary\, Martin Hayes\, declares it “a hypnotic recording that is grounded\, subtle and refined.” The trio departs from the string band format that has defined the genre\, especially since the Old-time music revival of the 1970s made guitar\, bass\, and chordal accompaniment features of the music. Untethering the music from chord patterns and guitars\, they reimagine older approaches to the music filled with tonal ambiguity\, drone\, and dissonance. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nThe members of the trio are veteran performers in the Old-time scene\, where they’ve worked with renowned string bands The Bucking Mules and Bigfoot. Beehive Cathedral draws on the group’s experiences making music together at Southern fiddlers’ conventions\, in the back of NYC pubs\, on stages\, and in their homes. It also sources energy from their broader musical lives\, including Schrey’s participation in NYC’s experimental sound community and Decosimo’s collaborations with Durham\, NC projects Wye Oak\, Hiss Golden Messenger\, and Jake Xerxes Fussell.

SUMMARY:Patrick Shiroishi: Forgetting is Violent Tour
DESCRIPTION:Forgetting is Violent\, Patrick Shiroishi’s latest solo LP\, is his most immediate release yet\, expanding the scope not just of his music but of his extramusical considerations. Where his past releases on American Dreams reckoned with racism against Japanese Americans or presented Shiroishi’s saxophone as heard in a parking garage\, Forgetting is Violent considers racism as a whole\, historical and ongoing\, with the urgency it deserves. Here\, for the first time\, we hear Shiroishi joined by a supporting cast that reads like a who’s-who of heavy music: Aaron Turner (SUMAC\, ISIS)\, Gemma Thompson (Savages)\, Faith Coloccia (Mamiffer)\, otay::onii (Elizabeth Colour Wheel)\, and Mat Ball (BIG|BRAVE). The constant\, as ever\, is Shiroishi’s patient\, probing musicality\, marrying heaviness and lightness\, acceptance and defiance\, both packing a punch and welcoming new listeners into the fold. \nThis concert is presented with R5 Productions.

SUMMARY:Ak’chamel\, The Giver of Illness + Julius Masri (Mephisto Halabi set) & Derek Monypeny
DESCRIPTION:Ak’chamel\, The Giver of Illness is an enigmatic trio from a border state. Fourth World Post-Colonial Cultural Cannibalists Circumcising The Foreskin of Enlightenment.Performing in homemade costumes and masks\, they have played festivals in various cities around the U.S gaining international attention from Vice\, The Wire\, Tiny Mix Tapes\, Consequence of Sound\, and many more. \nThey have been known by many names: Ak’chamel The Giver of Illness\, The Bandylegged Riders of the Ill-Promised Sun\, The Crazed and Sunchalked Bones of the Vanished Herds etc… Honed and expanded through their travels\, Ak’chamel’s singular sound comprising desert-scorched psychedelia\, post-apocalyptic shamanism\, and bizarre ritual folk is as unique as the physical theater of their otherworldly live performances. \nPerforming in homespun costumes and masks\, with self-made instruments\, they have played festivals in various cities around the U.S gaining international attention from Vice\, The Wire\, Tiny Mix Tapes\, Consequence of Sound\, and many more. They have amassed over 10 cassette albums and 1 VHS full length film\, but their music reached a wider audience through two excellent LPs released on the french label Akuphone: “The Totemist” (2020) – which was recorded in a ghost town in Chihuahuan desert in far West Texas – and “A Mournful Kingdom of Sand” (2023) which – according to the band – is “a perfect soundtrack for the desertification of our world”. Their third album\, “Rawskulled”\,was released in 2024. \nJulius Masri (Mephisto Halabi set): \nJulius Masri is a Philadelphia based multi instrumentalist\, and performer/composer for the city’s dance community at large. His music focuses on improvisatory methods and syncretic / linguistic exchanges within various musical languages including Jazz\, Metal\, AfroCuban\, Experimental Noise\, and Arabic music. Born in Tripoli\, Lebanon\, he moved to the States in 1990 and picked up drumming a year later. He studied with Philadelphia instructors Carl Mottola\, Elaine Hoffman-Watts\, and as an undergraduate at Bard College\, with AACM’s Thurman Barker\, Richard Teitelbaum\, and Joan Tower. Julius plays drums\, circuit modified Casio keyboards\, Oud\, Kamancheh (aka Rabab\, Spike Fiddle)\, and various other instruments. He currently performs in groups such as grind/crust metal band Night Raids\, free jazz groups Sirius Juju and Dromedaries\, trombone and synth duo Superlith\, and more. He has performed with Henry Grimes\, Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, Thurman Barker and members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Julius is a recipient of a 2022 Yaddo Fellowship for composition\, the 2022 university of the arts creative research and innovation grant\, and project funding via pew center for arts & heritage\, as well as Swarthmore college and the Andrew W. Mellon foundation. \nDerek Monypeny: \nBorn in the Arizona desert\, a veteran of multiple explorations into the Sahara desert via Morocco and Western Sahara\, and now a resident of the Mojave\, Derek Monypeny sees his musical mission as adding to and expanding on what he calls the “desert continuum;” the psychedelic sirocco swirl of desert-based stringed instruments played with utter abandon by musicians the world over. \nThe entrance on the 48th Street side of building is wheelchair accessible via a street-level lift. Please contact us in advance for assistance.

SUMMARY:DJ Spooky and Michael Sakamoto
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in butoh\, hip-hop\, new music\, and immersive media\, these interwoven pieces explore cultural memory\, resistance\, and ecological urgency through richly layered sound\, movement\, and image. With inspiration drawn from the legacy of the late composer and activist Ryuichi Sakamoto\, the program moves across geographies and histories to offer a striking reflection on our collective present. \nThe evening includes Beautiful Blue Sky\, a duet between Sakamoto and guest artist Mohammed “Barges” Smahneh that blends autobiographical dance theater with hip-hop and Palestinian folk traditions; asymm\, Sakamoto’s solo exploration of identity\, borders\, and belonging; and Gods and Monsters\, Miller’s music- and media-driven performance combining electronic\, classical\, and hip-hop elements with visuals and dance. Together\, these excerpts create an urgent\, poetic experience that dissolves boundaries between disciplines while imagining new ways of being in a fractured world. \n

SUMMARY:Jack Wright/Ben Wright \, Henry Allen/Jonah Gelbart\, Lance Simmons
DESCRIPTION:Henry Allen/Jonah Gelbart – guitar and trumpet \nPhiladelphia based musicians Henry Allen and Jonah Gelbart have been playing freely improvised music as a duo for the last several years. Henry Allen is a guitarist whose playing incorporates experimental punk ideas with rapidly evolving and abrasive harmonic textures. Jonah Gelbart plays various trumpets and shofar\, combining his training in classical and jazz with a personal experimental language. They prefer a playful approach to music-making that emphasizes social interaction over directly aesthetical considerations. \n  \nLance Simmons – percussion \nLance Howard Simmons is a self-taught percussionist and multi-disciplinary artist from the North American South residing in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. His other notable musical endeavors include The Playful Bunch\, Slack\, Mirror Men\, and Unguent.”  https://refulgentsepulchre.bandcamp.com/album/fractal-discharge \n  \nJack Wright/Ben Wright – bass and alto saxophone \nJack Wright is a veteran saxophone improviser based mainly in Philadelphia\, regularly touring North America and Europe the past four decades and well known to improvisers. Continually seeking out interesting partners and playing situations\, Wright is one of the originals of American free improv\, and now at 81 he is still the “Johnny Appleseed of Free Improvisation\,” as the late Davey Williams (guitarist) called him in the 80s. \n  \nBen Wright from Dixon\, New Mexico plays double bass. He cut his teeth in Philadelphia punk rock\, and has since been working the double bass for 30 odd years\, bolstered by intense spats of incidental formal training. A lover of the lowest frequencies\, Ben has explored many disparate forms of music through the bass\, yet always returns to the wellspring of improvisation.

SUMMARY:PHIPPS PT. & HENBANE
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented with Clavius Productions \nPhipps Pt. \nPhipps Pt. is the sound project of Canadian conduit\, Lovage Sharrock. What began as a series of one-off performances pairing her hypnotic fingerpicked guitar patterns and fragile vocals with a rotating roster of impressive collaborators\, has evolved with the regular accompaniment of Jon Leidecker (Wobbly / Negativland / Thurston Moore Group) live processing the moment. Each conjured performance is raw\, distinct and unrepeatable. In their live act\, Sharrock’s vocals vacillate between delicate\, seductive\, humorous and disturbed\, offering moments of profound beauty and catharsis within joy and deep discomfort. Together\, they continue to push the boundaries of what it means to connect through music\, creating spaces where composition and experimental sound converge. Their sophomore album\, Songs We No Longer Sing\, is set to release later this year. \nHenbane: \nHenbane was formed in the summer of 2023 by Kohoutek percussionist Scott Verrastro and bassist Griffin Vernor Drutchas based on the framework of 1968-1970 Fairport Convention\, covering a repertoire of traditional British Isles folk ballads\, lyrical gems from ’60s and ’70s songwriters\, and original compositions.

SUMMARY:Artifacts Trio AACM 60th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:All three members of the Artifacts Trio have long been recognized as torchbearers of Chicago’s innovative jazz scene\, as well as the most prominent performer-educators in the third generation of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Music (AACM)\, the historically vital\, leading-edge Chicago arts organization. Their music advances the organization’s motto\, “Ancient to the Future\,” celebrating African-American culture while reaching across genres and integrating new\, progressive ideas into the legacy of jazz and composition. \nTheir first album\, Artifacts\, was released a decade ago\, showcasing classic compositions by such AACM composers as Henry Threadgill\, Roscoe Mitchell\, Fred Hopkins\, Leroy Jenkins\, Amina Claudie Meyers\, Steve McCall\, Anthony Braxton and Muhal Richard Abrams. The album placed in lists of top albums for 2015 on NPR as well as in The New York Times and All About Jazz. Subsequent releases have placed the trio’s own intriguing compositions on deservedly equal footing with those of their forebears.
