SUMMARY:David Tudor: Bandoneon!
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present a free screening of Bandoneon! (a combine)\, a documentary about David Tudor’s groundbreaking 1966 performance\, followed by a Q&A with filmmaker Julie Martin. \nBandoneon! was Tudor’s first full concert work as a composer\, performed as part of 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering—a legendary collaboration between ten New York artists and thirty engineers from Bell Telephone Laboratories. Tudor played the bandoneon as input into a complex sound and visual modification system that moved sound between speakers and controlled lights and video images\, animating the entire 69th Regiment Armory space. This documentary reconstructs the original performance through archival film and vintage photographs\, featuring interviews with the performers\, engineers\, and Tudor’s fellow composers. The film offers rare insight into one of the most ambitious experiments in live electronic performance and interdisciplinary collaboration of the 1960s. Julie Martin\, who directed the film and worked closely with Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) co-founder Billy Klüver\, will discuss the project and answer questions following the screening.

SUMMARY:Eastman / Williams / Mendelssohn
DESCRIPTION:Felix Mendelssohn was 21 when he toured Italy\, an impressionable\, impassioned young composer alive to musical inspiration. He was already developing an international reputation\, and this trip stirred his imagination. He described his “Italian” Symphony\, rich in imagery and melody\, as “blue sky in A major.” \nJohn Williams’s jaunty Tuba Concerto is a delightful opportunity to experience the many gifts of Principal Tuba Carol Jantsch\, whose sound is “as clear and sure as it is luxurious” (The Philadelphia Inquirer). \nThe program opens with a long-lost gem. Julius Eastman was a shooting star of a composer\, an extraordinary talent ahead of his time. Born in 1940\, Black and gay\, he was as defiant as he was gifted. Living and creating on the edge\, Eastman fell into poverty and homelessness\, dying alone and unheralded in 1990. In recent years\, new audiences have embraced his works\, including his powerful Second Symphony. Tender and shattering\, it was created as a farewell to a former lover\, with whom it remained until rediscovered and premiered in 2018.

SUMMARY:A View From Inside: David Tudor at 100 exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A View from Inside: David Tudor at 100 celebrates the life\, work\, and legacy of David Tudor (1926–1996)\, a Philadelphia-born pioneer of experimental music and sound art. Tudor transformed the possibilities of sound by merging audio technology\, tone generators\, signal processors\, loudspeakers\, and electric circuits into instruments of radical invention. \nTudor first gained prominence in the early 1950s as a virtuoso pianist\, championing new works by John Cage\, Morton Feldman\, and Christian Wolff. By the 1960s\, he shifted from performance at the keyboard to creating live electronic compositions. His projects pushed the boundaries of art and technology: Bandoneon! at Experiments in Art and Technology’s 9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering (1966); the immersive sound installation for the Pepsi Pavilion at the 1970 Osaka World Expo; and Rainforest IV (1973)\, a seminal work in which found objects became both sound sources and resonators\, realized in collaboration with Composers Inside Electronics. From 1953 until his death\, Tudor worked closely with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company\, and in the 1990s he collaborated with engineers at Intel on the Neural Network Synthesizer\, a technology that anticipated current AI systems by decades. \n  \nOn View: January 15 – March 21\, 2026. \nOpening Reception: Thursday\, January 15\, from 5:00-7:30pm \nGallery Hours:\nTuesday – Friday 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.\nSaturday 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. \nLocation:\nPearlstein Gallery\nDrexel University\nURBN Annex\n3401 Filbert Street\nPhiladelphia\, PA 19104

SUMMARY:Ches Smith’s Clone Row
DESCRIPTION:“This definitely ain’t your father’s guitar band\,” writes no less an expert on six-string subversion than Marc Ribot in the liner notes to the self-titled debut by Ches Smith’s latest project\, Clone Row. The adventurous new quartet features Smith with guitarists Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman and bassist Nick Dunston. As a composer\, Smith finds endless possibilities in this seemingly limited instrumentation\, weaving together varied threads from his divergent earlier projects in ways that sound not quite like any of them. \nWriting for All About Jazz\, Glenn Astarita calls Clone Row “a statement of intent from an artist still hungry to redraw the boundaries of progressive jazz. Essential listening for anyone curious about where creative music is headed in 2025\, it delivers both the thrill of exploration and the satisfaction of landing somewhere entirely new.” This latest evolution in Smith’s imaginative soundworld was deliberately devised to spotlight four composer-improvisers who could transform and evolve the composer’s tantalizing musical instigations.

SUMMARY:Bex Burch
DESCRIPTION:Bex Burch is a composer\, percussionist\, producer and instrument maker that has carved out a unique sonic space for herself. Her restless creativity and desire to embrace new musical challenges across a range of percussive instruments have led to collaborations with a diverse range of artists such as Peter Zummo\, Kuljit Bhamra\, Tamar Osborn\, Leafcutter John\, Mariá Portugal\, Tony Buck and Evelyn Glennie. Her recorded music with Boing!\, Flock and her celebrated band Vula Viel has seen her straddle the divergent worlds of minimalism\, post punk\, and improvisation with equal success. \nAccording to The Guardian\, Burch’s music “shares some characteristics with the music of Steve Reich and John Adams\, but this is minimalism that isn’t afraid to break into a sweat and get its hands dirty.” Her open-hearted\, open minded and wide-eyed approach to improvisation continues to break new musical ground.

SUMMARY:Tri-Axium Theory and You- Unlocking the Music of Anthony Braxton
DESCRIPTION:Led by tri-centric orchestra concertmaster Erica Dicker\, This workshop is dedicated to the exploration of the compositional/improvisational systems of NEA Jazz Master Anthony Braxton. As much as we are trying to faithfully approach the work of the maestro\, we will use this music as a springboard to unlocking our own creativity and unique approaches.  \n \nIn the course of these 3 hours- participants will learn how to spontaneously arrange music utilize Braxton’s Language Music\, and have the opportunity to ask burning questions about score interpretation. The last half of the workshop will be dedicated to practicing the scores as a collective ensemble. For those up for the adventure\, they will then perform the scores in the concert to follow in the evening. This workshop is open to all instrumentalists\, composers\, and “friendly experiencers.” The ability to play notated music is useful but not necessary for the enjoyment of the workshop. Instrumentalists in the workshop are required to bring their own amplification to play in the concert. There will not be use of the PA. Vocalists should bring their own mic and make arrangements prior to the workshop.

SUMMARY:Shahzad Ismaily x Greg Saunier x Maria Chavez
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the Philadelphia debut of this remarkable trio\, bringing together three musicians whose work is united by a commitment to artistry beyond category. Shahzad Ismaily (Arooj Aftab\, Ceramic Dog)\, Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) and turntablist/sound artist Maria Chavez came together as a trio for the first time on stage in Williamsburg\, Brooklyn in May 2025. That debut performance received a glowing review in The Wire\, where writer Vanessa Ague heralded it as “a reminder of… the sheer joy of seeing what surprises we can find in sound.” \nCalled “musicians’ favorite musician” by The New York Times\, Shahzad Ismaily is a multi-instrumentalist and producer who has worked with a staggering range of musical minds\, including John Zorn\, Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed\, Tom Waits\, Marc Ribot\, Arooj Aftab\, Bonnie Prince Billy\, Nels Cline and countless others. Greg Saunier is a founding member of the reliably unpredictable band Deerhoof as well as a “polyrhythmically rewarding and puckishly anti-corporate” (Stereogum) drummer\, composer and improviser who has worked with Yoko Ono\, Arto Lindsay\, Anthony Braxton\, Mike Watt and others. Maria Chavez is an abstract turntablist\, sound artist and DJ whose work across mediums is united by coincidence\, chance and failures. Her approach is rooted in Deep Listening\, developed by her late mentor Pauline Oliveros. Artforum has hailed her as “a bricoleur of intricate\, cerebral\, capricious sonic landscapes constructed through improvised sampling.”

SUMMARY:Jason Rigby’s Mayhem feat. Mark Guiliana & Chris Morrissey
DESCRIPTION:  \nAfter nearly a decade away from recording as a leader\, saxophonist Jason Rigby made his triumphant return in August 2025 with Mayhem\, a groundbreaking duo album featuring renowned drummer Mark Guiliana. The project expands to a trio as it arrives at Solar Myth\, adding the eclectic bassist Chris Morrissey to the mix. \nMayhem represents both a sonic and emotional departure for Rigby. The album arrives after a transformative decade of extensive touring that shaped Rigby both personally and creatively\, giving him the space to evolve and reach a place where he felt ready to express ideas that felt truly his own. Mayhem showcases this evolution through its incorporation of sounds and instruments Rigby had never explored in his recordings before—synthesizers\, keyboards\, electronic processing\, and more—creating both a sonic and emotional shift that represents a new chapter in his musical journey. It draws on the deep collaboration between Rigby and Guiliana\, a 15-year musical partnership that has taken them around the world. As a fellow member of Guiliana’s audacious quartet\, Morrissey has also been a vital part of that relationship\, which will doubtless make this performance a compelling excursion.

SUMMARY:UB-313
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop is thrilled to present UB-313\, an exploratory new supergroup from Philly by way of the outer limits of the galaxy\, at Solar Myth on Saturday\, January 3\, 2026. \nOut beyond Pluto can be found the dwarf planet Eris – also known in astronomical circles as 2003 UB-313. That alternate name has now been adopted by this supernova of a quintet featuring Philadelphians sharing a cosmic bond based on their dauntless sense of improvisational adventure. \nThe band features the indefatigable Maestro Marshall Allen\, heading inexorably toward his 102nd birthday; the relentlessly inventive saxophonist Elliott Levin; the mind-boggling keyboards of Brian Marsella\, a master interpreter of the music of John Zorn; the six-string alchemy of longtime Sun Ra Arkestra guitarist DM Hotep; and the mesmerizing percussion of drummer and Chicago Underground co-founder Chad Taylor. This is a once in a lifetime convergence not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Dezron Douglas Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Bassist\, composer\, bandleader\, and educator Dezron Douglas has established himself as a major force in contemporary creative music. Followers of contemporary jazz might recognize Douglas for his bass work behind Pharoah Sanders\, Louis Hayes\, or Ravi Coltrane. Others might know him as the newest full-time member of the Trey Anastasio Band. With Emilio Modeste on saxes\, George Burton on keys\, and Joe Dyson Jr. on drums\, the Dezron Douglas Quartet joined the International Anthem roster with their stellar ATALAYA\, summoning the dynamism of Coltrane’s classic Quartet\, Dave Holland’s Quintet on Prime Directive\, or Charles Mingus on “Nostalgia In Times Square” – swinging virtuosically and firing on all four cylinders. Free and dissonant\, sweet and consonant\, sweeping and pure. This is the band you hope is playing every time you walk into a club.

SUMMARY:Shande Record Release Show with there & Song People
DESCRIPTION:Shande: \nShande (שאַנדע): A ‘shande’ is a damn shame. A Yiddish epithet whose frightful power is reserved for only the most disgraceful offenses under heaven\, it is a devastating word to the Jewish ear. But for Jack Braunstein’s experimental 12-piece folk-rock ensemble from Philadelphia\, it’s an oddly fitting name. With explosive politics and off-puttingly beautiful arrangements\, their music is a strange and compelling new entry into the long lineage of diaspora Jewish songwriters demanding more of this world. \nInspired by the boundary-crossing approach of Clube Da Esquina–the community of Brazilian musicians\, composers and poets centered around Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges in 1970s Belo Horizonte–Shande features a collective of friends and collaborators from the worlds of free-improv creative music\, klezmer and freak folk writing and performing arrangements for Braunstein’s stark and knotty songwriting. The result is a uniquely rewarding listen that speaks in love and rebuke to our disintegrating world. Their debut album Hereness (דאָיִקייט) will be released on 12/13/2025 on Peace Isn’t Luck and Como Tapes. \nThe release show will feature the core band of Braunstein on guitar\, clarinet\, and vocals\, And Keller (Snow Caps\, Hermit Thrushes) on bass and Dan Lynch (Loamer\, Boone) on drums\, joined by Melinda Rice on violin/viola\, Andrew Gioanetti on woodwinds\, Karen Smith on percussion and more special guests to be announced. \nNow based in Syracuse\, NY on the land of the Haudensaunee Confederacy\, Braunstein is a life-long amateur songwriter and clarinetist. As an improviser has played in a number of ensembles\, including Green Plum Ensemble\, The Great Blue Heron (with Mike Watson) and the Kol Tzedek Simcha Band (a community klezmer band led by Dan Blacksburg). Before moving to Central New York in 2024\, he was an active member of DIY communities in Philadelphia and New England for over 10 years\, sharing bills with a range of freaks from Wolf Eyes and Thurston Moore\, to NappyNappa and Alex G. \nther: \nther is a band from the area of occupied Lenaphoking known as Philadelphia. The songs ther plays are written by producer and mastering engineer Heather Jones (credits inc A24\, MJ Lenderman\, TAGABOW\, Samia) who draws from an ever-shifting pool of influences and inspiration. she has been assisted over the years by a rotating cast of Philly musicians\, currently comprised of Jon Cox (Florry\, sadurn\, Son of Barb) \, Ripley Tiberio-Shultz (A Deer A Horse\, Ripley) Veronica Magner (Amelia Cry Til I Die\, Dustship Lizard)\, Max Rafter (Crooks & Nannies\, Snake Boy Gang)\, and Amelia Swain (Amelia Cry Til I Die\, sadurn). The music has many faces. some songs conjure both the metallic and contemplative extremes of slowcore\, while others are rooted chamber pop or plugged-in folk. \nSong People: \nSong People were formed in December of 2022 by core members of the Philadelphia-based music collective Edible Onion: Shaina Kapeluck\, Darian Scatton\, and Benjamin Schurr. Having played in each other’s bands for over twelve years\, they’ve settled into a comfortable songwriting cabal made fruitful by over a decade of collaboration \naccessibility: space is on the second floor up a flight of stairs

SUMMARY:* Moonrise Music: Inflouresence Trio
DESCRIPTION:Trio Inflorescence performs in a generative way similar to how the fractals of plant structures are created\, reach for the sky and bask in the sun. It considers plant life cycles\, improvising growth and withering through time\, adapting to the the natural\, unnatural\, and the imaginary implications of sonic moments. \nwe three (Dan Blacksberg\, trombone\, Carlos Santiago\, violin\, Sonali Singh\, Bassoon\, Piano) came together in may 2025 to indulge our growth habits of climbing like vines around our compositions\, anchoring in the crevices of our musical minds to enclose and break down our own musical preconceptions.

SUMMARY:Bitchin’ Bajas
DESCRIPTION:The new album from Bitchin Bajas — the acclaimed trio of Cooper Crain\, Rob Frye\, and Daniel Quinlivan — arrives September 26\, marking their first full-length since 2022’s Bajascillators. Composed primarily on the road and recorded at Chicago’s Electrical Audio\, Inland See presents four expansive tracks that form a cohesive sonic statement: elemental\, immersive\, and deeply transportive. The lead single “Skylarking\,” accompanied by a visualizer by longtime collaborator Nick Ciontea\, offers an early glimpse into the record’s luminous interior world. \nAs with each Bitchin Bajas release\, Inland See is guided by a spirit of discovery — music as revelation\, where rhythm and atmosphere intersect in hypnotic equilibrium. On “Skylarking\,” tightly looped grooves and global timbres swirl into motion\, summoning both ecstatic propulsion and meditative stillness. It’s a space dance with subterranean roots — a composition that\, like the album itself\, evokes the sensation of buoyancy: held aloft by sound\, suspended in time. \nDon’t miss this rare live performance\, as Bitchin Bajas return to Solar Myth to celebrate a project that reaffirms their singular position at the crossroads of minimalism\, kosmische\, and spiritual jazz. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:FÖR (Shakoor Hakeem/Isak Ingvarsson) & Church Car
DESCRIPTION:FÖR is a new collaboration between percussionist Shakoor Hakeem and Swedish saxophonist Isak Ingvarsson. Rooted in the spirit of Don Cherry’s arrival in Sweden in the mid-1960s\, the project bridges Swedish folk traditions with the rhythmic folklore of the Afro-Diaspora—fusing into a deep sonic eruption of energy and expression. \nIsak Ingvarsson – Saxophone\, Clarinet\, Flute A rising voice in the European jazz scene\, Ingvarsson has performed with Per “Texas” Johansson\, Kresten Osgood\, Fredrik Ljungkvist\, and others. A graduate of Jazz Institut Berlin and currently pursuing a Master’s at City College of New York under Tim Berne and Vincent Herring\, his sound blends avant-garde jazz\, Scandinavian minimalism\, and raw emotional depth. \nShakoor Hakeem – Percussion A fearless\, deeply expressive improviser rooted in Afro-diasporic mysticism and ritualistic tradition. Hakeem has worked with Graham Haynes\, Maria Grand\, Joel Ross\, and Wallace Roney\, among others\, and is known for his powerful yet restrained presence on stage. \nChurch Car: \nChurch Car is the duo project of Ian Douglas-Moore and Big Daddy Mugglestone\, blending minimalist psychedelic trance-rock\, spoken texts mediated by machine algorithms\, and tunings that alter the listener’s auditory perception. Their guitar and drum interactions move between polyrhythmic goatherd meditations and field recordings\, creating an imagined folk tradition glimpsed through a screen of urban life. As an improviser\, Ian Douglas-Moore developed a minimal approach to the guitar\, creating psychoacoustic experiences with feedback and resonant long tones. After moving to New York City in 2016\, he studied just intonation with composer David First\, later joining his ensemble. He has played bass guitar in rock bands Gold Dime and Bushwick Cowboys\, organizes experimental music concerts with guitarist/bagpiper David Watson\, and performs with people like Patrick Holmes\, Jeff Tobias\, and Dominic Coles. Big Daddy Mugglestone (Aaron Snyder) is a Colorado-born musician and composer. After studying Ethnomusicology at Indiana University and doing field work in Africa\, Asia and Central America\, he landed in Berlin in 2005. Since then he has worked in many different projects and bands\, from stage and dance sound design to Country/Americana and experimental improv. \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.

SUMMARY:SML
DESCRIPTION:SML brings together a stunning cross-section of Los Angeles’s thriving jazz\, improvised\, and indie music scenes: bassist Anna Butterss (Jason Isbell\, Phoebe Bridgers\, Makaya McCraven\, Daniel Villarreal)\, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu (Ariel Kalma\, Marta Sofia Honer\, Icy Demons)\, saxophonist Josh Johnson (Meshell Ndegeocello\, Leon Bridges\, Carlos Niño)\, percussionist Booker Stardrum (Amirtha Kidambi\, Lisel\, Lee Ranaldo\, Patrick Shiroishi) and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann (Sam Wilkes\, Meg Duffy\, Perfume Genius). Their self-titled debut on International Anthem\, called “a delightful and awe-inspiring experience” by Glide Magazine\, is a sublime assemblage of circulatory grooves and textural anomalies bewitched by swirls of modular synthesis\, at different moments recalling the the jagged dance-punk of Essential Logic\, the rhythmic revelry of Fela Kuti\, the low-end elasticity of Parliament/Funkadelic\, or the glitchy dub techno of Pole. Their name\, SML (Small Medium Large)\, exemplifies their collective nature\, which harkens back to a lineage established by AACM and other avant-jazz groups\, but may follow a formula closer to the Dusseldorf scene in the late 60s of Kraftwerk\, Harmonia\, Cluster\, and Neu!

SUMMARY:Kneebody
DESCRIPTION:In their almost two-decade history\, the Grammy-nominated band Kneebody has created a genre and style all its own. Their sound is an explosive blend of rock energy and high-level\, nuanced chamber ensemble playing\, set within the frames of highly wrought compositions that balance adventurous\, no-holds-barred improvisation. Their music defies classification\, drawing from influences that include 1960s free-bop\, 1970s jazz rock\, 1990s hip-hop\, and post-millennial indie rock\, all infused with a classical post-minimalist sensibility. Their collaborators have included such musical thinkers as Theo Bleckmann\, Daedelus\, Becca Stevens\, Gretchen Parlato\, Gerald Clayton\, and Josh Dion. The band’s highly anticipated new album\, Reach\, is the latest in its reimagined quartet guise\, featuring keyboardist Adam Benjamin\, trumpeter Shane Endsley\, saxophonist Ben Wendel\, and the uniquely dynamic Nate Wood\, who simultaneously handles both bass and drums. Reach exemplifies Kneebody’s continued evolution\, pushing the boundaries of genre while delivering their signature blend of intricate composition and raw energy.

SUMMARY:Weirs & Channel Marker
DESCRIPTION:Weirs: \nWeirs is an experimental/traditional music collective from central North Carolina. Non-hierarchical in form\, past Weirs performances have included anywhere from two to twelve people. This Weirs lineup—neither definitive nor precious—includes Oliver Child-Lanning; Justin Morris and Libby Rodenbough (his collaborators in Sluice); Evan Morgan\, Courtney Werner\, and Mike DeVito of Magic Tuber Stringband; and stalwarts Andy McLeod\, Alli Rogers\, and Oriana Messer. \nThe Weirs project began as tape experiments on traditional tunes Child-Lanning made under the name Pluviôse in winter 2019. This evolved into the first Weirs record\, Prepare to Meet God\, which was self-released in July 2020 and was a collaboration between Child-Lanning and Morris during COVID. The strange conditions of that debut—a communal tradition of live songs recorded apart in isolation—are undone by Diamond Grove\, a record rooted in the unrepeatable convergence of people\, place\, and time. On the new record\, Weirs continue their search for how best to forward\, uphold\, and unshackle so-called “traditional” music. They are songcatchers\, gathering tunes on the verge of obscure death. Their wild\, centuries-spanning repertoire plays like an avant-call-the-tune session—a kind of Real Book for a scene fluent in porch jams\, Big Blood\, Amps for Christ\, and Jean Ritchie. Weirs catch songs whose interpretive canon still feels ajar—open enough to stand next to but never above those who’ve sung them before. These aren’t attempts at definitive versions. The recordings on Diamond Grove feel like visitations rather than revisions. And the question Weirs asks on this record is not how to simply continue the tradition of their forebears\, but how traditional music could sound today. For Weirs\, the history of this tradition could be taken less from the folk revival than from musique concrète; less from pristine old master recordings than something like The Shadow Ring if they’d come from the evangelical South. \nChannel Marker: \nChannel Marker are Shaina Kapeluck\, Roger Martinez and Benjamin Schurr\, members of Song People\, Luna Honey and Interminables. \nVocals\, harmonium and contrabass. Songs about death\, the sea\, death at sea and talking animals. \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.
