SUMMARY:David Tudor at Gate Hill Tudor Talk (Online) with Mark Davenport
DESCRIPTION:David Tudor is largely remembered for his performances of mid-twentieth-century avant-garde piano music and his close association with John Cage\, but much less is known about his personal life or the intentional artist’s community he co-founded in 1954. The Gate Hill Cooperative\, established with Cage and others who had emerged from the experimental environment of Black Mountain College\, became Tudor’s home for over forty years—the place where he produced practically his entire compositional oeuvre. Tudor was only 28 when he moved to Gate Hill\, and it was there that he developed the electronic and collaborative practices for which he continues to garner international recognition. Musicologist and cultural historian Mark Davenport\, who grew up at Gate Hill\, will draw on his decade-long research project and forthcoming book Community\, Art\, Education and the Search for Meaning: From Black Mountain College to the Gate Hill Cooperative to provide rare access and insight into Tudor’s life during the formative early years of the community. This conversation offers a unique personal and scholarly perspective on the environment that shaped Tudor’s artistic evolution. \nPhoto: David Tudor at the Gate Hill Cooperative (c. 1960). Photograph by Betsy (Epstein) Williams. Courtesy of Mark Davenport/Landkidzink Image Collection. \n\nThis online program starts at 6:00pm Eastern US time as a Zoom Webinar. Registration is required\, but free.

SUMMARY:Nomad War Machine with TJ Borden\, Embarker
DESCRIPTION:Nomad War Machine is an improvised metal duo consisting of guitarist James Reichard and drummer Julius Masri.  In 2023\, both musicians entered Baltimore’s Tempo House Recording studio with pedal steel luminary Susan Alcorn Lobato. \nThe release of the album Contra Madre (VG+ Records)\, on January 31 of 2026\, marks the one year anniversary of her passing. The Fire Museum Presents concert serves as a Philadelphia premier of sorts\, and a celebration of Susan’s undeniable creative fording into new sonic territories. February 15th\, Nomad War Machine will be joined by Brooklyn based cellist TJ Borden\, a restless improviser and explorer of tonal possibilities. TJ has performed and recorded with the Mivos Quartet\, and has released many of his own works\, both solo and collaborative. \nConcerning Contra Madre: An unexpected opportunity arose after a conversation between James Reichard and Susan Alcorn\, where she revealed a fascination with death metal\, confessing\, “I’m 70 years old\, I think about death!” She had learned Arch Enemy songs on pedal steel\, and was particularly compelled by the frontwoman’s intensity and vigor as a performer. Voicing an appreciation for the hook-oriented sound of Swedish death metal made sense for Susan whose roots as a veteran pedal steel player reached into the Western Texan swing circuit of the 60s and 70s. For Susan\, ever the explorer\, metal was a new\, appealing point of departure for her into fresh\, unfamiliar musical territory. \nThough known for her fluency in Jazz\, Country\, and free improvisation\, Susan had also studied Arabic\, the oud\, and maqam systems. Pre-70s Country & Western music had also been a lifelong presence for both members of Nomad War Machine. Julius Masri\, a Lebanese free jazz and metal drummer\, and devoted fan of Texas Swing legends like Speedy West\, Jimmy Bryant\, Leon Rhodes\, and Joe Maphis\, was also steeped in Arabic music traditions.  James Reichard\, before coming to ‘freely’ improvised metal\, xenharmonic music\, and non-western tuning systems\, had grown up being subjected to countless singalongs to numerous pre-70s country records\, entranced by the pedal steel. Susan Alcorn expressed an interest in playing with Nomad War Machine\, it felt like there was a whole world of shared or complementary interests to explore. \nEmbarker: \nEmbarker is the solo project of audio visual artist Michael Roy Barker. Mb uses a variety of electronics\, modular synthesizer\, homemade instruments\, voice and processed audio collages to create hyperkinetic\, genre-bending music that is often used as a soundtrack to found videos or as an interactive audio visual experience. He has performed widely in the US\, and has also studied at STEIM in 2007 and been artist in Residence at the Experimental TV Center in Owego NY 2006-2007.

SUMMARY:JeJaWeDa (Jeb Bishop/Jaap Blonk/Weasel Walter/Damon Smith) & 52nd St Planetary Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:JeJaWeDa: \nThe band features the great Dutch sound poet and improvisor Jaap Blonk\, trombone virtuoso Jeb Bishop\, and the versatile and powerful “rhythm section” of Damon Smith and Weasel Walter. \nJaap Blonk is unique for his powerful stage presence and playful freedom in improvisation\, combined with a keen grasp of structure. \nThe frenetically prolific bandleader/composer/multiinstrumentalist Weasel Walter summons myriad timbres from a(mostly) conventional drum kit\, while also bringing a strong performative element to the proceedings. \nJeb Bishop is an extraordinary improviser\, composer\, and simply one of the finest living trombonists\, and has been a major voice in improvised music for more than 20 years. \nTireless organizer and Balance Point Acoustics label head Damon Smith expands both the sound world of the double bass and the roles it can play in an ensemble. \n  \nThe sonic result of this alchemical gamble is a wide-open\, unruly field of play where anything can and will happen. The New York City session and performance documented on these releases run the gamut from delicate chamber textures to Xenakis-meets-cracked-video-game burbling to all-out electronic meltdowns. \nDouble Bass – Damon Smith \nPercussion – Weasel Walter \nTrombone\, Electronics – Jeb Bishop \nVoice\, Electronics – Jaap Blonk \n  \n52nd Street Planetary Ensemble: \nThe 52nd Street Planetary Ensemble is a rotating cast of musical characters united by their dedication to the joyful practice of collective improvisation. Grounded in weekly workshop sessions at the Rotunda in West Philadelphia\, they channel influences from jazz\, experimental\, and world music traditions into a never-ending exploration of creative freedom. \n  \naccessibility: ramp into lobby\, then 7 stairs into theater \nremember that dada loves you more than hallmark.

SUMMARY:Postal Pieces 2.0 Arcana New Music Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present the Arcana New Music Ensemble performing Postal Pieces 2.0\, the second iteration of “Postal Pieces\,” a concert featuring living composers in Philadelphia and beyond composing postcard-sized works inspired by James Tenney’s unorthodox set of compositions. \nTenney’s “Postal Pieces\,” composed between 1954 and 1971\, are a series of ten concise works each printed on a postcard. These pieces capture Tenney’s exploration of sound and form\, focusing on minimalist structures\, intonation\, and what he called “Swell” forms—gradual crescendos and decrescendos that create a unique auditory experience. Conceived originally as musical “letters” to friends and collaborators\, such as Pauline Oliveros and La Monte Young\, these works reflect Tenney’s deep connections within the avant-garde music scene and his penchant for inviting listeners into meditative states of listening. \nSets of the these newly commissioned postcard works will be available for purchase at the concert\, with all proceeds benefiting the Arcana New Music Ensemble. Previous postcard sets will also be available and are available to purchase online.

SUMMARY:Miramar
DESCRIPTION:Miramar: \nMiramar reimagines the Latin bolero and carries the torch of bolero beat—a genre that rose to international fame in the 1960s by blending nostalgic ballads with psychedelic rock\, bossa nova\, funk\, jazz\, and more. An offshoot of the acclaimed indie-salsa band Bio Ritmo\, Miramar was one of the first Latin bands to perform on NPR’s Tiny Desk and has since introduced its unique take on bolero to audiences worldwide\, releasing music on two of Brooklyn’s most iconic independent labels: Barbès and Daptone Records. Their latest album\, Entre Tus Flores\, released on the historic tropical label Ansonia Records\, was hailed by Staf Magazine (Spain) as “one of the greatest discoveries of recent years\,” and praised by Lira Magazine (Sweden) as “crazy\, updated\, odd – and irresistible. \n”Miramar’s undeniable magic lies in the chemistry between vocalist-songwriter Rei Álvarez and the “gran voz de la diva\,” Laura Ann Singh. Their “heartbreaking vocals suck in every nerve” (Lira)\, and they “harmonize with such precision and grace that it’s hard to imagine a day when they didn’t sing together” (Style Weekly). The Álvarez–Singh duo is supported by a lush\, dreamlike soundscape arranged by bandleader Marlysse Simmons-Argandoña\, who alternates between piano and combo organs. As a full band\, Miramar also includes Gary Kalar on electric guitar\, Giustino Riccio on percussion\, Dan Martinez on bass and occasional collaborates with string quartets and symphony orchestras. Its core members and collaborators are based between Richmond\, San Juan\, and Brooklyn. \nvenue is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Audra Saxophone and Voice
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present Audra performing an evening of music for voice and saxophone\, with repertoire including Meredith Monk’s Hocket for Two Voices\, two moody folk-song arrangements by Karin Rehnqvist\, and Cecilia McDowall’s dramatic White Fox Woman. Three pieces make up the center of this program: Thomas Kessler’s Is it?\, Philippe Leroux Un lieu verdoyant\, and Gelsey Bell’s Aviatrix. All three treat the voice and saxophone like a hyper-instrument\, creating a new\, hybrid sound out of the two performers. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nNoa Even (saxophone) and Anika Kildegaard (voice) are Audra\, a genre-defying new music duo exploring the dynamic interplay and sonic intersections between soprano voice and saxophone. Their debut performances in early 2025 included the Spotlight Series at Rowan University (NJ)\, No Exit presents in Cleveland (OH)\, and the Fuse Factory in Columbus (OH). This season’s performances include the Andrea Clearfield Szalon\, Harrison Township Historical Society concert series (NJ)\, 2640 Space in Baltimore\, and Bowerbird in Philadelphia. \n

SUMMARY:Rainforest & Composers Inside Electronics Tudor Talk (Online) with John Driscoll and Phil Edelstein
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present an online talk with John Driscoll and Phil Edelstein\, hosted by exhibition co-curators You Nakai and Dustin Hurt. \nJohn Driscoll and Phil Edelstein are founding members of Composers Inside Electronics (CIE)\, a collaborative group formed in 1973 that has been central to the evolution and continuation of David Tudor’s Rainforest works. In this conversation\, they trace the remarkable trajectory of Rainforest from its origins as a 1968 sound score for Merce Cunningham’s dance to its transformation into Rainforest IV\, a groundbreaking performed installation where each collaborator designs and constructs sculptural loudspeakers that become instruments in themselves. Driscoll and Edelstein will discuss the collaborative workshop in New Hampshire that birthed Rainforest IV\, the research into rotating speakers and directional sound that emerged from their work together\, and how they have continued to develop Tudor’s vision in the decades since his passing. This includes their creation of Rainforest V\, a self-running installation version that has been acquired by institutions including MoMA and has introduced Tudor’s radical approach to sound sculpture to new audiences worldwide. The conversation offers rare insight into what it means to sustain and evolve a collaborative artwork across generations while honoring its original spirit of experimentation and shared discovery. \n\nThis online program starts at 6:00pm Eastern US time as a Zoom Webinar. Registration is required\, but free.

SUMMARY:SAM WENC + FRIENDS & VICTOR VIEIRA BRANCO/SAM YULSMAN DUO: LANGUAGE AT AN ANGLE RECORD RELEASE SHOW
DESCRIPTION:Sam Wenc + Friends: \nSam Wenc pedal steel \nSam Yulsman piano \nJoey Sullivan drums \nJohn Moran bass \nVictor Vieira Branco vibraphone \nWill Henriksen violin \nMatthew Lee bass clarinet/saxophone \n  \nFrom Language At An Angle liner notes\, by Jack Braunstein: \n“Language At An Angle” is the latest offering from Sam Wenc (fka Post Moves); an eight-part tone poem and journey through the heart\, and\, as the title suggests\, a reflection on meaning itself. Fleshed out with a crew of wildly talented improvisor-composers\, the music sits in a unique place at the edges of free-improvisation\, East Asian court music\, and the overtone-centered wizardry of drone technicians like Ellen Fullman and Kali Malone. \nCompositionally and spiritually\, there is no greater influence on this record than the late Susan Alcorn\, to whom the album is dedicated. Like all of those who had the privilege to be taught by Susan\, Wenc was transformed by her presence and generosity. While her boundless creativity and fierce technical ability on the instrument are a treasure to all open-minded steel players\, what I understand Sam to treasure most about her mentorship were the more intangible things–the wholeness of spirit that she brought to her playing and relationships\, and her sensitivities to the spiritual forces of the world. Susan’s passing was a devastating loss for her community: there are some transformations for which you can’t prepare. What Language at an Angle offers instead is a practice of making meaning in this world\, tenuously\, temporarily\, as it is\, deeply. And in doing so\, he is passing on a gift. Ready or not\, we might need it. \n“The singular music of pedal steel guitarist\, Sam Wenc…takes an instrument that is usually associated in a cliche way and turns it into something very atmospheric and expansive” – WNYC \nVictor Vieira-Branco & Sam Yulsman duo: \nVictor Vieira-Branco is a Brazilian/American vibraphonist\, having spent the 2010s in the vibrant São Paulo music scene. While Bark Culture is Vieira-Branco’s primary vehicle as a leader\, his performances include work with Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra\, the Chad Taylor Quintet\, and as active as an improviser having performed with Toshi Makihara\, Ken Vandermark\, Dorothy Carlos\, Ben Hall\, Jaribu Shahid and others. \nSam Yulsman is a pianist\, composer and theorist with roots in a wide array of experimental music and jazz lineages. He has collaborated closely with Jessie Cox\, Roman Filiu\, Brandon Lopez\, Chris Corsano\, Anaïs Maviel\, Art Lande\, Lester St. Louis\, Alicia Hall Moran\, Anna Webber\, Diego Espinosa\, TJ Borden\, Marcela Lucatelli and Kevin Ramsay among many others. As a composer his work has been performed by ensembles and soloists including JACK Quartet\, Talea Ensemble\, the Sun Ra Arkestra\, Distractfold\, Ensemble Korea\, Rage Thormbones and Séverine Ballon. He recently completed his DMA in composition at Columbia University where he studied with George E. Lewis. \nvenue is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Curating David Tudor Tudor Talk (Online) with Nancy Perloff and Ron Kuivila
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present an online talk with Nancy Perloff and Ron Kuivila\, hosted by exhibition co-curators You Nakai and Dustin Hurt. \nNancy Perloff\, curator at the Getty Research Institute\, oversees the David Tudor Papers\, one of the most significant archives of experimental music in the 20th century. Ron Kuivila\, Professor of Music at Wesleyan University and performer of Tudor’s work\, is custodian of the David Tudor instrument collection and has spent decades studying\, reconstructing\, and performing Tudor’s electronic systems. Together\, they offer unique perspectives on the challenges and insights of preserving\, interpreting\, and presenting Tudor’s legacy—from navigating complex archival materials to understanding the physical instruments and circuits that defined his work. This conversation explores what it means to curate an artist whose practice resisted fixed documentation\, and how institutions can make Tudor’s elusive but transformative work accessible to new generations of artists and scholars. \n\nThis online program starts at 6:00pm Eastern US time as a Zoom Webinar. Registration is required\, but free.

SUMMARY:Eric Ruin's Ominous Cloud Ensemble / Chiff Chaff Trio
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nPhiladelphia visual artist Erik Ruin and his Ominous Cloud Ensemble will be trying out a slightly different format than usual\, a new immersive long-form four-channel performance-installation with each musician tied to a channel of projections. Imagery will combine animation\, shadow puppetry and experimental video. This time around the ensemble will be guitarist DM Hotep of the Sun Ra Arkestra\, cellist Tom Kraines of the Daedalus Quartet\, Myles Donovan of Disemballerina and A Stick And A Stone on viola and Julius Masri AKA Mephisto Halabi on percussion and electronics.\n\nChiffchaff Trio—features Caleb Gamble (double bass)\, Tre Abalos (woodwinds)\, and Ricki Weidenhof (cello)—is based out of Pittsburgh and Philadelphia\, and their  music blends structured improvisation with drones\, microtonality\, voice-play\, and carefully woven samples. Raw\, energetic bursts and quiet\, immersive soundscapes emerge . \nErik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble is an ever-evolving\, collectively-improvising large ensemble for projections and music\, led by visual artist Erik Ruin\, recently lauded by The New York Times for his “spell-binding cut-paper animations.” Erik manipulates intricate paper-cuts and painted films on overhead projectors to create abstract landscapes and fragmentary scenes that are nonetheless charged with meaning\, merging with music that ranges from dark atmospherics to ecstatic peaks of dissonance.
