SUMMARY:Anthony Tidd Quite Sane
DESCRIPTION:Anthony Tidd is a creative musician\, composer\, producer\, educator and curator who over a 30 year career has notably performed with\, and produced songs on multi-platinum albums for\, many artists including; The Roots\, Steve Coleman\, Meshell Ndegeocello\, David Byrne\, Macy Gray\, Wayne Krantz\, Zap Mama\, Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Lady Gaga\, The Black Eyed Peas\, Orrin Evans\, Fergie\, Jill Scott\, Ursula Rucker\, and many more. His debut album\, Quite Sane – The Child of Troubled Times (2002)\, which fuses elements of hip-hop and funk with jazz\, quickly became a modern staple within creative music circles. \nTwenty years after that landmark debut\, Tidd reconvened the project\, leading to the release of his long-awaited follow-up\, To Kill a Child of Troubled Times. The album is composed of three distinct EPs\, together forming a trilogy that traces a child’s journey of our central protagonist through different perspectives and stages of his life – and on a deeper level tells the story of the universal child of troubled times\, as reflected in our modern society. Bringing Quite Sane to the stage of Solar Myth for the first time\, Tidd will celebrate the release of the album’s third and final chapter\, Epilogue\, which offers audiences an immersive experience that bridges groove\, abstraction\, and storytelling in real time. The music distills African diasporic rhythm\, hip-hop language\, funk\, jazz aesthetic\, and advanced improvisation into a focused\, emotionally resonant sonic landscape.

SUMMARY:The Lepidopterans & Barbedwire
DESCRIPTION:The Lepidopterans are a “supergroup” with Baltimore/Philadelphia long-time experimental scene players Toshi Makihara\, Tom Borax\, Jason Willett and John Dierker. Each member has decades of experience improvising and collaborating\, having appeared in a dizzying list of projects\, bands and records. They bring out virtuoso chops and strange and humorous theatricality to live sets that are like celebrations linking free jazz\, early electronic music\, and noise. \nJason Willett (b. 1967) is an uncategorizable bassist\, electronics wiz and engineer/producer who founded Megaphone records and The True Vine record shop and has appeared on (not exaggerating) 100s of albums. He’s been the primary bassist for no-wave punk legends Half Japanese for the past 30 years. He’s performed with tons of amazing artists – a few examples – The Ruins\, Jon Rose\, Jac Berrocal\, Fred Frith\, Chris Cutler\, Yamatsuka Eye\, Matmos\, Ron Anderson etc etc. \nJohn Dierker (b. 1965) is arguably Baltimore’s best and most flexible reed player. A virtuoso of saxes\, clarinets\, and flutes – he has been blowing minds in Baltimore music spaces for nearly 5 decades. Equally at home in straight jazz\, club music\, live wedding dance bands\, and outrageous noise blowing – John is basically unstoppable and criminally underrated as a monster of reeds. He has a 3+ decades-long collaboration with Baltimore pianist Layfayette Gilchrist (Arkestra and David Murray). “….interweaving concepts augmented by howling lines\, injections of blues-drenched choruses and Albert Ayler-like display of energy.” (All About Jazz.) \nTom Borax (b. 1974) is a multi-media artist\, musician/composer\, founder of Baltimore’s High Zero Festival of Improvised and Experimental Music (in its 27th year!). A multi-instrumentalist – he mostly plays on a self-built analog synthesizer and microtonal harpsichord. He has performed and improvised across the USA\, Canada\, Mexico\, Europe\, China\, and Japan. He has improvised with a diverse range of musicians including Tetsuya Yoshida\, Matmos\, Jenny Graf\, Ben Bennett\, Jamal Moore\, Ami Yamasaki\, Emily Rach Beisel\, Michael Zerang\, Hanna Olivegren\, Takahiro Kawaguchi\, Chiang Ziyang\, Bashi Rose\, Simone Barone\, Levi Lu\, Jeff Carey\, Ikue Mori\, Forbes Graham\, Weasel Walter\, Tomomi Adachi etc etc. \nToshi Makihara’s (b. 1960) performance work effortlessly blends percussion with dance-like body movement. Through a rigorous\, systematic\, and practiced process of experimentation and repetition\, Makihara seeks out sounds that he and others have never heard before\, experimenting with touch\, force\, and speed\, and always remaining aware of sound’s relationship to the body. He uses a variety of percussion instruments\, as well as objects found in nature and everyday items\, such as metal or machine parts. \nBARBEDWIRE: \nPhillip Greenlief: \nSince his emergence on the west coast in the late 1970s\, saxophonist/composer Phillip Greenlief has achieved international acclaim for his recordings and performances with musicians and composers in the post-jazz continuum as well as new music innovators and virtuosic improvisers. He has performed with Wadada Leo Smith\, Meredith Monk\, Rashaun Mitchell & Silas Reiner\, and They Might Be Giants. Albums include two LANTSKAP LOGIC TRIO releases (w/ Evelyn Davis and Fred Frith)\, THAT OVERT DESIRE OF OBJECT with Joelle Leandre\, ALL AT ONCE with FPR (Frank Gratkowski and Jon Raskin)\, and OH THAT MONSTER with LA punk pioneers Thelonious Monster. Recent residencies have included the Banff Center for Art and Creativity\, Neue Muzik Koln\, and Headlands Center for the Arts. His critical writing has been published in Artforum\, Open Space (SFMOMA)\, Sound American\, and Signal to Noise. \n“The Bay Area’s do-it-yourself ethos has produced a bevy of dazzlingly creative musicians\, but few have put the philosophy to work as effectively as Phillip Greenlief.” – Andrew Gilbert\, San Francisco Chronicle \nJen Baker: \nJen Baker\, NYC-based trombonist/composer has pioneered a widely diverse career based in redefining the role of trombone in contemporary music and traditional performance settings. Featured on numerous record labels including the soundtrack to Werner Herzog’s Oscar-nominated Encounters at the End of the World\, she performs locally and internationally as contemporary trombonist and improviser. Her book\, Hooked on Multiphonics\, fills the gap for trombonists and composers looking to understand this extended technique for her instrument. Hailed for her “formidable sensitivity” (New York Times)\, she has “performed with brilliant mastery and virtuosity” (San Francisco Classical Voice) at festivals worldwide\, as Guest Artist at International Trombone Festival\, American Trombone Workshop\, Complete Trombonist Workshop\, Ostrava Days (Czech Republic)\, Edgefest\, Electro-Acoustic Improvisation Summit\, International Society of Improvised Music\, and others. Her compositions have been performed nationwide partly through commissions by members of Mivos Quartet\, The Fourth Wall\, loadbang\, Asphalt Orchestra\, Wavefield\, and with solo and collaborative projects as composer/performer. She was a featured soloist on Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studio in their Quarantine Concert Series. Her Silo Songs\, recently presented by Edgefest!\, blends site-specific field recording (realized with 4+ surround speakers) with live performance soloist. \nSara Schoenbeck: \nThe Wire magazine places Sara Schoenbeck in the “tiny club of bassoon pioneers” at work in contemporary music today and the New York Times has called her performances “galvanizing” and “riveting\, mixing textural experiments with a big\, confident sound.” Sara promotes the bassoon as a colorful and flexible voice in both her own work and in collaboration as an improviser\, interpreter and composer. She has been a member of a number of music ensembles including Ghost Train Orchestra\, Nels Cline’s Lovers Orchestra\, Anthony Braxton’s 12+1(tet) and the Tri-Centric Orchestra\, Wayne Horvitz’s Gravitas Quartet with Ron Miles and Peggy Lee\, Wavefield\, Petr Kotek’s SEM ensemble\, Dana Lyn’s Mother Octopus and Michael Bates’ Acrobat. Sara has performed regularly with many inspiring artists and ensembles including David Byrne\, Henry Threadgill\, Roscoe Mitchell\, Satoko Fujii\, Butch Morris\, Wadada Leo Smith\, Matt Mitchell\, Marty Ehrlich\, Johnny Reinhard\, the International Contemporary Ensemble\, Wet Ink\, the Michael Leonhart Orchestra\, Adam Rudolph’s Go Organic Orchestra\, Brooklyn Raga Massive\, Eve Risser’s White Desert Orchestra\, Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra\, Vinny Golia’s Large Ensemble\, Harris Eisenstadt’s Golden State and numerous regional orchestras. Sara can be heard on dozens of music and film recordings including The Matrix Reloaded\, The Matrix Revolutions\, Spanglish and Dahmer\, and on the Tzadik\, Pi\, Matador and Blue Note Record labels. In 2021\, Sara released her self-titled debut album to critical acclaim on Pyroclastic Records\, featuring nine duos with different partners; Roscoe Mitchell\, Nels Cline\, Robin Holcomb\, Nicole Mitchell\, Mark Dresser\, Harris Eisenstadt\, Matt Mitchell\, Peggy Lee and Wayne Horvitz. The album was recorded in seven different locations across North America and appeared on numerous critics’ best-of-year lists. \nvenue is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Lia Kohl\, Zachary Good & Pureply
DESCRIPTION:Lia Kohl: \nLia Kohl is a cellist\, composer\, and sound artist based in Chicago. Her wide-ranging practice includes composition and performance\, installation\, improvisation\, and collaboration. She tours nationally and internationally\, working in theater\, jazz\, rock\, and experimental contexts. Her work centers curiosity and patience\, an exploration of the mundane and profound possibilities of sound. \nZachary Good: \nAs a composer\, Zachary explores contrapuntal possibilities on the soprano clarinet with small–interval multiphonics (”close dyads”)\, creating the illusion of multiple clarinetists playing simultaneously. His music is quietly virtuosic\, inspired by the intricacies of the clarinet and a love for Baroque nuance and form. Zachary’s compositions and intersecting multiphonic research were the focus of his dissertation\, “Add Dye: Dyadic Perspectives on Close Dyad Multiphonics for the Soprano Clarinet.” A companion to this document is Zachary’s most substantial composition to date\, Lake Heritage (2019–2022): an hour-long piece that incorporates 60 unique multiphonics across four soprano clarinets in Bb. \nPurePly: \nPurePly (they/them) is a black Philadelphia-based producer\, sound alchemist\, and composer whose music celebrates the boundless possibilities inherent in technology. Their works explore diverse soundscapes\, ranging from the distorted space of harsh noise to the ethereal tranquility of ambient sounds. PurePly incorporates live improvisational techniques to infuse their music with fun and spontaneity. \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.

SUMMARY:Marshall Allen’s Ghost Horizons with Angel Bat Dawid
DESCRIPTION:Still traveling the spaceways after 101 years on the planet\, the indefatigable Maestro Marshall Allen remains a brilliant imaginative force whose life has spanned nearly the entire history of jazz. A key member of the Sun Ra Arkestra for more than six decades and its dauntless leader for the last quarter century\, Allen has kept the iconic bandleader’s cosmic torch blazing brightly while forging a path through the spaceways as a singular voice on the alto saxophone and Electronic Wind Instrument (EWI). Allen has led a number of diverse incarnations of his Ghost Horizons band with guitarist DM Hotep at Solar Myth over the last few years. \nThis month\, in conjunction with the new exhibition The Living Temple: The World of Moki Cherry\, Allen will be joined by the composer\, clarinetist\, singer & spiritual jazz soothsayer Angel Bat Dawid. A powerful meditation on memory\, mythology\, and ancestral science\, her music blends spiritual jazz\, celestial electronics\, ancestral instrumentation\, and storytelling to imagine futures grounded in ancient knowing.

SUMMARY:DEAD JAZZ (G Calvin Weston / Matt Hollenberg / Tom Spiker
DESCRIPTION:Step into the electrifying universe of Dead Jazz\, where metal\, jazz\, and eclectic improvisation collide in an audacious sonic journey. The Hollenberg\, Spiker\, Weston Trio delivers an instrumental tour de force that captures the raw energy\, masterful interplay\, and fearless exploration of three boundary-pushing musicians.\nAt the helm of rhythm and texture is G Calvin Weston\, a legendary drummer and trumpeter with a career as groundbreaking as his performances. At just 17\, Weston joined Ornette Coleman’s revolutionary Prime Time band\, contributing to three seminal albums that reshaped the landscape of jazz. Over the years\, he has performed and recorded with icons like James Blood Ulmer and John Lurie’s The Lounge Lizards. With more than two dozen albums as a leader or co-leader\, Weston’s relentless creativity thrives in projects like Free Form Funky Freqs\, alongside Vernon Reid and Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, and Wail\, with members of Stinking Lizaveta. His drumming on Dead Jazz is both propulsive and free\, driving the music forward while carving out vast rhythmic landscapes.\nMatt Hollenberg wields the guitar like a force of nature. Known as the blazing guitarist of Cleric and John Zorn’s Simulacrum\, his musical realm spans avant-garde classical\, free jazz\, dissonant math metal\, ambient\, and world music. Originally from Philadelphia and now Brooklyn-based\, Hollenberg composes intricate pieces that seamlessly fuse fiery solos with improvisational brilliance. Collaborations with luminaries like John Zorn and John Medeski have solidified his reputation as an innovator unafraid to push musical boundaries. On Dead Jazz\, Hollenberg’s guitar erupts into a kaleidoscope of sounds—angular riffs\, searing melodies\, and abstract textures that defy expectations.\nOn bass is Tom Spiker\, a producer\, mixer\, and instrumentalist whose deft touch provides the harmonic foundation for the trio’s dynamic explorations. Spiker’s dual role as bassist and recording engineer is pivotal in capturing the immediacy and intensity of the session. His rich\, resonant bass lines anchor the chaos with precision\, while his mixing—alongside Hollenberg—ensures every layer of sound shines. Spiker’s skill as a producer also brings a deliberate edge to Dead Jazz\, making it as clear as it is unrelenting.\nDead Jazz is a bold statement of artistic freedom and collaborative invention. Released under Park West Records\, the album invites listeners into a soundscape where improvisation is the driving force and the unexpected becomes the norm.

SUMMARY:Forest Speech and Piano Amy Williams (piano) and Composers Inside Electronics
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present pianist Amy Williams and a performance of David Tudor’s Forest Speech led by Phil Edelstein with additional performers to be announced. \nThis concert celebrates David Tudor’s dual legacy as both a revolutionary pianist and electronic music pioneer. The first half features Amy Williams performing works by Morton Feldman\, John Cage\, and Earle Brown that were written for and premiered by Tudor in the 1950s and 1960s. As one of the most sought after interpreters of piano music in his generation\, Tudor’s performances transformed indeterminate scores into vivid sonic experiences\, establishing new possibilities for what piano performance could be. Williams\, a composer and pianist known for her deep engagement with contemporary repertoire and her acclaimed recordings of Morton Feldman and other experimental composers\, brings her own interpretive insight to these historically significant works. \nThe second half presents Forest Speech (1978/79)\, a rarely performed work from Tudor’s Rainforest family that uses amplified objects as “instrumental loudspeakers.” Developed in 1976 and expanded as a group version in 1978\, Forest Speech transforms sound into vocal-like illusions through formant resonances and vocoder-like circuit networks. This performance version utilizes everyday objects fitted with sonic transducers—metal barrels\, plastic tubing\, found materials—that resonate and shape electronic sound\, creating a dense acoustic environment where physical materials become active participants in the composition.

SUMMARY:Morton Feldman: Triadic Memories
DESCRIPTION:Amy Williams is a composer of music that is “simultaneously demanding\, rewarding and fascinating” (Buffalo News)\, “fresh\, daring and incisive” (Fanfare). Her compositions have been presented at renowned contemporary music venues on four continents by many of the leading contemporary music soloists and ensembles\, including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra\, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra\, JACK Quartet\, Ensemble Aleph\, Dal Niente\, Wet Ink\, Talujon\, International Contemporary Ensemble\, and pianist Ursula Oppens. Her pieces appear on the Albany\, Parma\, VDM (Italy)\, Blue Griffin\, Centaur and New Ariel labels. As a member of the Bugallo-Williams Piano Duo\, Ms. Williams has performed at important new music festivals and series worldwide and recorded six critically-acclaimed CDs for Wergo (works of Nancarrow\, Stravinsky\, Varèse/Feldman and Kurtág). She has taught at Bennington College and Northwestern University and is currently Associate Professor of Composition at the University of Pittsburgh. \nMORTON FELDMAN was born in New York in 1926. He studied music and piano with several teachers at a young age before becoming a student of Stefan Wolpe after graduating from high school in 1944. Although Feldman mastered atonality\, the pair spent much of their time together simply arguing about music and Feldman struggled to find an artistic voice when composing music. \nFeldman’s artistic development took shape in 1949 when Feldman met composer John Cage\, commencing a lifelong artistic association of crucial importance to American music in the 1950s. Cage was instrumental in encouraging Feldman to have confidence in his instincts\, which resulted in totally intuitive compositions. From then on\, Feldman never worked with any systems that anyone has been able to identify\, working from moment to moment\, from one sound to the next. During this vital time of his musical career\, his friends during the 1950s in New York included the composers Earle Brown and Christian Wolff; painters Mark Rothko\, Philip Guston\, Franz Kline\, Jackson Pollock and Robert Rauschenberg; and pianist David Tudor.

SUMMARY:Jason Rigby's Mayhem w/ Mark Guiliana / Chris Morrissey
DESCRIPTION:After nearly a decade away from recording as a leader\, saxophonist Jason Rigby made his triumphant return in August 2025 with Mayhem\, a groundbreaking duo album featuring renowned drummer Mark Guiliana. The project expands to a trio as it arrives at Solar Myth\, adding the eclectic bassist Chris Morrissey to the mix. \nMayhem represents both a sonic and emotional departure for Rigby. The album arrives after a transformative decade of extensive touring that shaped Rigby both personally and creatively\, giving him the space to evolve and reach a place where he felt ready to express ideas that felt truly his own. Mayhem showcases this evolution through its incorporation of sounds and instruments Rigby had never explored in his recordings before—synthesizers\, keyboards\, electronic processing\, and more—creating both a sonic and emotional shift that represents a new chapter in his musical journey. It draws on the deep collaboration between Rigby and Guiliana\, a 15-year musical partnership that has taken them around the world. As a fellow member of Guiliana’s audacious quartet\, Morrissey has also been a vital part of that relationship\, which will doubtless make this performance a compelling excursion.

SUMMARY:The Early
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop hosts the record release party for I Want To Be Ready\, the latest from Philly-based post-rock experimentalists The Early\, at Solar Myth on Sunday\, March 1\, 2026. \nThe Early began in northern New Jersey in 2004 as a band of high school buddies coming of age at the apex of indie rock and fixated on the “post-rock” sounds of Do Make Say Think\, Jim O’Rourke and Tortoise. Since then the group has had multiple reincarnations\, most recently in the two-piece of Alex Lewis (guitars\, synthesizers) and Jake Nussbaum (drums\, electronics). Reunited in Philadelphia in 2019\, Alex and Jake have spent the past six years reinventing their shared musical language\, infusing the textural grandeur of post-rock with the communicational intimacy of jazz improvisation and the patient grooves of minimalism and electronica. \nThe title of their new album\, I Want To Be Ready (Island House)\, draws inspiration from choreographer and dancer Danielle Goldman\, whose book by the same name describes improvisation as a state of “readiness” for whatever is to come. The Early’s new music grows out of an honest reckoning with the band’s frustrations for the world: a desire\, a humble aspiration to get their shit together for whatever’s ahead.

SUMMARY:Drum Major Instinct with Katherine Young
DESCRIPTION:Drum Major Instinct with Katherine Young: \nDrum Major Instinct is an experimental music duo from Asheville\, North Carolina. Jeff Arnal plays (mostly) percussion and Curt Cloninger plays (mostly) modular synthesizer. The Wire describes Jeff’s drumming as a “highly original concept” having “a balletic sense of time and imaginative deployment of colour;” and Byron Coley says Curt’s modular synthesis “moves like blocks of radioactive adobe being shifted around by architects in space suits.” But\, of course\, nothing is ever that straightforward. The resultant music is about waves of energy\, patterns within patterns (within patterns)\, sounds from the natural world\, and running the voodoo down. Their self-titled first release is on Mahakala Music (2022) and their latest 2025 LP (entitled “Almost Nothing”) is on Haunted Apparatus. \nAs a bassoonist and improviser\, Katherine Young amplifies her instrument and employs a flexible electronics setup. She performs as a soloist\, in ad hoc improvised groups\, and with projects such as Beautifulish (duo with Sam Scranton) and Architeuthis Walks on Land (duo with Amy Cimini). Her debut solo album garnered praise in The Wire (“Bassoon colossus”) and Downbeat (“seriously bold leaps for the bassoon”). She has documented her work on numerous recordings\, including her quartet Pretty Monsters self-titled debut\, a duo recording with Anthony Braxton\, and the multi-movement work “Diligence Is to Magic as Progress Is to Flight” (Parlour Tapes+) created with violinist Austin Wulliman of the JACK Quartet. Katherine is based in Atlanta\, where she teaches composition\, electronic music\, and improvisation at Emory University. In 2021\, she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition. As a scholar\, she researches the incorporation of idiosyncratic electronics and improvisation in contemporary notated music. \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.

SUMMARY:Chad Taylor Quartet performs John Coltrane & Don Cherry's The Avant-Garde
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with The Living Temple\, the ongoing exhibition celebrating the life and work of Swedish visual artist and designer Moki Cherry\, Ars Nova Workshop presents the Chad Taylor Quartet performing The Avant-Garde\, the 1966 album that brought together Don Cherry and John Coltrane\, at Solar Myth on Friday\, February 27. \nA composer\, scholar and educator as well as a capaciously inventive percussionist now living in Philadelphia\, Chad Taylor is best known as co–founder of the Chicago Underground Duo (and the numerous Underground iterations that have spun off of that original partnership) with trumpeter Rob Mazurek\, and as drummer for the late jaimie branch’s Fly Or Die. A professional on the Chicago scene from the age of 16\, he became a rhythmic muse for many of the most celebrated artists in improvised music\, including Fred Anderson\, Pharoah Sanders\, Nicole Mitchell\, Matana Roberts\, Ken Vandermark\, Darius Jones\, James Brandon Lewis\, Derek Bailey\, Marc Ribot\, and Peter Brötzmann. \nReleased in 1966 on Atlantic Records\, The Avant-Garde was a sign of profound respect from one jazz pioneer to another. On the landmark session\, John Coltrane plays the music of Ornette Coleman\, accompanied by the members of Coleman’s groundbreaking quartet: bassist Charlie Haden\, drummer Ed Blackwell\, and Don Cherry\, who received co-billing and whose composition “Cherryco” opens the album. Chad Taylor will explore the music of that classic album with his quartet featuring trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson of Steve Coleman’s Five Elements along with Philadelphians Bryan Rogers (tenor saxophone) and Matt Engle (bass).
