SUMMARY:Caroline Davis\, Christian Mirande/ Carrie DeCunzo Mirande Duo
DESCRIPTION:Caroline Davis: \nAlive with nurturing visions of simple sonic offerings to morph our present situation\, Caroline Davis’ main reason for playing music is to connect with others\, beckoning new vistas among curious listeners. Her musical journey began in Singapore\, in a humid climate\, hearing sounds underwater that she would recreate by singing to her German shepherd dogs\, who treated her as their own. Her family moved to the United States\, Atlanta\, Georgia\, around age 6\, where she encountered R&B and gospel music rife with horns that called her to choose the saxophone 6 years later. \nToday\, Caroline’s music covers a wide range of styles\, owed to this shifting environment. As a leader\, she has released eight albums: Live Work & Play (2012)\, Doors: Chicago Storylines (2015)\, Heart Tonic (2018)\, Alula (2019)\, Anthems (2019)\, Portals\, Vol. 1: Mourning (2021)\, Alula: Captivity (2023)\, and Portals\, Vol.2: Returning. Her active projects include jazz-leaning Portals\, experimental R&B My Tree\, and protest band Alula. She has won Downbeat’s Critic’s Poll Rising Star Alto-Saxophonist (2018) and has been included in numerous Reader and Critics Polls. Her work has garnered much praise from NPR\, The Wire\, DownBeat\, and many international publications. \nDavis is active as both a side-person and a leader in a diverse set of expressions. Davis has shared the stage with Lee Konitz\, Rajna Swaminathan\, Michelle Boulé\, Angelica Sanchez\, John Zorn\, Bari Kim\, Wendy Eisenberg\, The Femme Jam\, Matt Mitchell\, Terry Riley\, Miles Okazaki\, and Billy Kaye. \nChristian Mirande & Carrie DeCunzo Mirande duo: \n“Some significant AOTY noise circling around this one. We’ve only just stepped into May so i’ll withhold my judgment for a few more months\, but some records do capture the imagination straight out the gate and Christrian Mirande’s latest\, a first time vinyl release for Regional Bears no less\, certainly feels like a contender. No surprise\, really\, considering Mirande’s history with some of the US underground’s finest institutions – Hanson\, Recital\, Ascetic House et al – though Beautiful One Day\, Perfect the Next does feel especially rounded and sharply conceived. We’ve a record of two halves\, the first side a series of shortform musique concrete digressions built from voice notes\, tape manipulations\, and some fluid\, abstract bass playing that had me thinking of that great Kontakta album snapped off into miniatures\, while the second is a totemic singular piece that’s a bit of a sui generis moment for Mirande. 15 minutes of chiming electronics and swirling ambience\, fretless bass\, and synthesised spoken word that makes unavoidable nods to Robert Ashley/Blue Gene Tyranny\, and recalls the conceptual application of James Ferraro circa NYC\, Hell 3am\, all whilst retaining a refreshing accessibility. There’s also some particularly effective interplay between the processed and the organic\, like the sound of the mulch of synthetic soil or swaying of plastic grass\, a venturing of some kind into the uncanny valley where Mirande’s lopsided world is captured in a fairground mirror.”-World of Echo \nCarrie DeCunzo Mirande is a computer musician\, pianist\, vocalist\, and video and installation artist. Her work deals with social and ecological ethics\, and she incorporates visual language and theater into her compositional and performance practice. \nShe has performed and released music under the monikers beautywork\, Natural Pleasures\, and Carrie Ford. She has released on Hold Tapes\, No Rent Records\, Love is the Law\, Sprawl Tapes\, American Damage\, and KSX Solutions. \nShe received an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College and studied geography and political ecology at the University of Vermont. She grew up in the the Adirondacks and currently lives in Philadelphia\, PA where she teaches privately.

SUMMARY:Irreversible Entanglements
DESCRIPTION:Irreversible Entanglements are a liberation-oriented free jazz collective formed in early 2015 by saxophonist Keir Neuringer\, poet Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother) and bassist Luke Stewart\, who came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event organized after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD. Months later the group added trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes. Though free jazz with voice is an uncommon approach in the modern day landscape of the genre\, the spirit and subject the band channels and explores represent a return to a central tenant of the sound as it was founded – to be a vehicle for Black liberation. As Joshua Minsoo Kim wrote in the Chicago Reader\, “Irreversible Entanglements will leave you shaken.” \nFor the first of two performances this weekend\, the band will celebrate the release of their eagerly anticipated new album. \n  \n21+

SUMMARY:A listening session with Irreversible Entanglements Moderated by WRTI
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with The Living Temple\, the ongoing exhibition celebrating the life and work of Swedish visual artist and designer Moki Cherry\, Ars Nova Workshop presents a special conversation and listening session with the Philadelphia-born free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements\, at the Fabric Workshop & Museum on Saturday\, March 28\, 2026. \nFor this very special event\, the band will explore the pioneering music of Don Cherry’s landmark 1972 double album Organic Music Society\, in conversation with WRTI’s Josh Jackson. \nThe recording\, which presaged the “world music” movement and its fusion of global traditions with jazz\, was an outgrowth of the community of like-minded musicians that Don and Moki Cherry convened in the town of Tågarp\, Sweden. Writing for Dusted\, Dan Ruccia hails the album as nothing less than “the sound of utopia\, of equality\, of the universal egalitarian dream\, of the earth\, the water\, and the life force in all its various guises.

SUMMARY:Laraaji - solo set
DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia-born and New Jersey-raised\, Laraaji has pursued spiritual transcendence through music since the mid-1970s. After years of developing an aesthetic shaped by Eastern philosophies and transcendental research in his longtime Harlem home\, Laraaji’s breakthrough came when Brian Eno discovered him busking in Washington Square Park in 1979\, improvising celestial meditations on his electric zither. This encounter led to a collaboration on Eno’s influential Ambient series\, resulting in the 1980 album Day of Radiance. \nSince then\, Laraaji has become a defining figure in new age and ambient music\, known for his commitment to hand-crafted sounds over synthesizers and his embrace of a human presence in his performances. Whether playing monochord instruments\, singing\, or using electronics-kissed percussion\, his music remains rooted in a cosmic African-American tradition. His soundscapes are as hypnotically beautiful as they are rich with moments of tension and dissonance\, bringing depth to his trance-inducing explorations. For over four decades\, Laraaji’s work has continued to evolve\, inviting listeners into deep states of reflection while remaining grounded in a deeply personal musical journey.

SUMMARY:Carlos Niño & Friends
DESCRIPTION:Carlos Niño refers to himself musically\, and in many aspects of his life\, as a “communicator\,” a role that encompasses his own work as well as his integral work on projects like André 3000’s New Blue Sun. Producing\, playing and making music are just some of the facets of that title\, as was his long-running\, wide-ranging Spaceways Radio program on Los Angeles’ KPFK. Niño’s earliest collaborators and mentors included Dwight Trible\, Kamau Daaood\, Adam Rudolph\, Derf Reklaw\, JMD\, Phil Ranelin\, Nate Morgan\, and Billy Higgins\, and his ever-expanding circle of collaborators has since grown to include Shabaka Hutchings\, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson\, Surya Botofasina\, Jamire Williams\, Sam Gendel\, Nate Mercereau\, Deantoni Parks\, Farmer Dave Scher\, Cut Chemist\, Madlib\, Laraaji\, and others.

SUMMARY:Portrait of Jessie Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:Curtis New Music Ensemble celebrates composer-in-residence Jessie Montgomery with a concert featuring works by the Grammy-winning composer\, violinist\, and educator. Praised as “turbulent\, wildly colorful\, and exploding with life” (Washington Post)\, Montgomery’s music fuses classical with vernacular styles\, improvisation\, poetry\, and social consciousness—offering a profound reflection of 21st-century American sound. \nA winner of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence\, Leonard Bernstein Award\, and Musical America’s 2023 Composer of the Year\, Montgomery explores themes from social justice to the Black diasporic experience with remarkable depth. The program opens with Concerto Grosso\, a bold reimagining of the baroque tradition where the solo violinist embraces “choose your own adventure” spontaneity. It concludes with Musings for two violins\, inspired by Bartók’s 44 Duos for Two Violins and honors composers like Bach\, Hindemith\, and Vivaldi. This captivating evening showcases Montgomery’s dynamic voice in modern classical music.

SUMMARY:Tatsuya Nakatani & Arcx Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Tatsuya Nakatani: \nTatsuya Nakatani is an avant-garde percussionist\, composer\, and artist of sound. Active internationally since the 1990s\, Nakatani has released over 80 recordings and tours extensively\, performing over 150 concerts a year. His primary focus is his solo work and his large ensemble project\, the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. He teaches master classes and lectures at universities and music conservatories around the world. Originally from Japan\, he makes his home in the desert town of Truth or Consequences\, New Mexico. With his activity in new music\, improvisation\, and experimental music\, Nakatani has a long history of collaboration. \nNakatani’s distinctive music centered around his adapted bowed gong\, supported by an array of drums\, cymbals\, and singing bowls. In consort with his personally hand-carved Kobo Bows\, he has spent decades refining and developing his sound as an arrangement of formations of vibrations\, incorporated in shimmering layers of silence and texture. Within this contemporary work\, one can still recognize the dramatic pacing\, formal elegance and space (ma) felt in traditional Japanese music. \nArcx Quartet: \nArcx Quartet guides listeners on an audio trip through hallucinogenic trancepts\, foldable shadows and metonymic nebulae\, skirting the boundaries of Arcx’s labyrinth collective sound-mind. Arcx Quartet seek to find truths/untruths within ever-present interstitial spaces. \nFor this occasion Arcx Quartet are Carlos Santiago– Violin\, Matt Engle + Dan Moser – Contrabass and Thomas Kraines– Cello. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom.

SUMMARY:Chris Speed Yeah NO with Cuong Vu\, Skúli Sverrisson\, Jim Black
DESCRIPTION:n March of 2000\, Ars Nova Workshop hosted the first of what would become hundreds of performances across Philadelphia\, presenting saxophonist Chris Speed and his creative quartet yeah NO at Plays & Players Theater. Much has changed in the ensuing quarter century. Speed has returned to perform for ANW many times in the ensuing years\, most recently as a member of the acclaimed trio-turned-quartet The Bad Plus. After more than two decades as a nomadic organization\, Ars Nova finally found a permanent home at Solar Myth in 2022. \nSo it’s a unique thrill to celebrate Ars Nova’s momentous 25th anniversary\, albeit a year late\, by bringing Speed and yeah NO back to Philadelphia. The quartet\, which teamed Speed with trumpeter Cuong Vu\, bassist Skulli Sverrisson and drummer Jim Black\, was the saxophonist and clarinetist’s first venture as a leader\, emerging from his groundbreaking work as a member of two now-legendary ensembles\, Human Feel and Tim Berne’s Bloodcount. At the time\, LA Weekly hailed Speed’s music as “one of the freshest and most attractive newer strains in jazz — moving\, driving\, blending\, shaking and evaporating in glassy plumes.” A welcome reunion\, to be sure.
