SUMMARY:New Thread Quartet
DESCRIPTION:New Thread Quartet was formed with the mission to develop and perform impactful new music for the saxophone\, and to provide high level ensemble playing to feature today’s compositional voices. In 11 seasons\, the quartet has commissioned and premiered over 45 new works by composers such as Amy Beth Kirsten\, Richard Carrick\, Ben Hjertmann\, Ebun Oguntola\, Scott Wollschleger\, Kathryn Salfelder\, Taylor Brook and Emily Koh. \nBased in New York City\, New Thread has performed at Carnegie Hall\, Roulette\, Dance Theatre of Harlem\, Morgan Library\, Bang on a Can Summer Festival Benefit\, and Monadnock Music. The quartet has performed\, toured and recorded more than 30 important works for saxophone quartet including Kati Agócs’ Hymn in New England Conservatory’s Jordan Hall; Marilyn Shrude’s Evolution V and energy flows nervously… in search of stillness\, as part of a 75th Birthday Celebration Concert at the Dimenna Center featuring Lost Dog Ensemble and the Momenta Quartet; Erin Rogers’ Urban Composites at the World Saxophone Congress in St. Andrews\, Scotland; and the premiere recording of Elliott Sharp’s seminal work Approaching the Arches of Corti for 4 soprano saxophones\, recorded with Grammy-winning engineer\, Judith Sherman\, now available on New World Records. New Thread released its debut album Plastic Facts in 2018 on New Focus Recordings and in 2020 recorded three works on [word]plays\, an album by Emily Koh now available from Innova Recordings. \nNew Thread has a track record of working closely with composers in a workshop environment during the formation of new works. The quartet strives for multiple performances of newly commissioned works in an attempt to bring new music to different audiences as often as possible. New Thread’s annual self-presented Explorations Series showcases works by emerging composers\, adding exciting new voices to the saxophone canon. \nNew Thread has conducted masterclasses\, residencies\, and performances for student saxophonists and composers at Peabody Conservatory\, University of Virginia\, Berklee Conservatory\, Bronx Community College\, Aaron Copland School (Queens College)\, Montclair State University\, and New York University. A strong community supporter\, New Thread attends NASA Regional and Biennial conferences across the US. The quartet encourages young composers to create new works for saxophones through an open submission policy\, conducting reading and feedback sessions throughout the year. New Thread is a presenting partner of Composers Now. \nEnsemble members are Jonathan Hulting-Cohen (soprano saxophone)\, Noa Even (alto saxophone)\, Erin Rogers (tenor saxophone)\, and Zach Herchen (baritone saxophone). \nwww.newthreadquartet.com/

SUMMARY:ANDRΘS INSIDIVM tour MMXXVI - Leila Abdul-Rauf \, Meophisto Halabi \, Angel Meat \, Vaelastrasz
DESCRIPTION:Leila Abdul-Rauf: Through her work across five Vastum albums\, Leila Abdul-Rauf has been a sonorous contributor to 20 Buck Spin’s discography for more than 15 years now. Concurrent to that she’s also amassed an impressive body of solo work whereby she could showcase the full range of her multi-instrumental artistic and vocal talents. \nOn ‘Andros Insidium’ Leila draws us into a ceremonial descent\, through the architecture of shadow itself. Unfolding like a ritual text etched in obsidian\, each movement traces the violent and sacred geometry of transformation. The presence and wisdom of the feminine divine looms throughout\, as an ancient and uncompromising force\, in conflict with everything buried\, exiled and made monstrous by the machinery of societal pressures and unrealistic expectations. The album delves deep into the dark vastness of the psyche of woman: wild\, ugly\, vulnerable and powerful. \nSonically ‘Andros Insidium’ is a mutation of the cinematic dark-ambient\, industrial and ritual folk expressed in prior releases\, now sharpened into something far darker\, more narrative and intimate. Leila’s vocal work becomes a new focus with a wider variety of styles and characters\, exorcising the demons of patriarchal fragmentation and revenge fantasy as lived myth. In its most potent moments\, ‘Andros Insidium’ suggests that wholeness is not purity or light\, but the terrifying act of reclaiming everything that was discarded\, and learning to speak with its voice. \nVaelastrasz: A dark ambient project from Virginia. Formed in 2016 by musician Min Naing\, Vaelastrasz conjures melancholic atmospheres with loop-based melodies using her keyboard. \nMephisto Halabi Julius Masri is a Philadelphia based multi instrumentalist\, and performer/composer for the city’s  dance  community at large. His  music focuses on improvisatory methods and syncretic / linguistic  exchanges  within  various  musical languages including Jazz\, Metal\, AfroCuban\, Experimental Noise\, and Arabic music. Born in Tripoli\, Lebanon\, he moved to the States in 1990 and picked  up drumming a year later. \nThe Arabic Room – الغرفة العربية | Mephisto Halabi – مفيستو حلبي | Musica Telharmonia Internacionale (Viva!) \nAngel Meat: Harsh Thanatology? Post Opera? Or maybe just a Maria Callas tape eating itself alive while drinking cough syrup. Regardless\, Angel Meat is a duo from Philadelphia consisting of vocalist Anna Young (Layer Meat/Hermit High Priestess) and harpist Myles Donovan (Disemballerina/Narco Medusa/A stick and a stone) accompanied by a chaotic pet poltergeist of electro acoustic feedback. Part improv\, part song. Part structure\, part disintegration. Movements of decay\, movements of recovery. Spiritual exorcism\, shaking the bars of its fleshy prison. Authentic Queers and Phony virgins\, rising from the ashes of Antigone. Ultimately\, we’re all just Angel Meat as far as mortality goes\, and we thank you for being here.

SUMMARY:Hana Stretton & Danielle Nia
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented with Clavius Productions \nHana Stretton: \nHana Stretton is a British/Australian composer\, singer and producer known for her remarkably warm production style and uniquely spacious songform. In 2023\, her debut album\, Soon\, earned a beloved status among discerning listeners around the globe. This stunning work caught the ear of one Phil Elverum\, who lovingly reissued Soon through his own label in 2024\, furthering the album’s reach and deepening its reputation. In the press\, Elverum said: “I hear an artist who has entered completely into the stream where creation originates […] Hana Stretton has truly recorded the deep flourishing sound of a quiet listening mind in full blossom.” A fitting testament to a young artist rooted in the stillness of nature. \nFrom the dusty Australian bushland on Soon\, Stretton transports the listener to the Pacific Ocean on her new album\, tiarn (set to be released summer 2026). Shifting gradually like a shoreline\, her new compositions reveal welcomed hints of classical and electronic flourishes. tiarn will be released independently with vinyl editions through PW Elverum & Sun (North America)\, brierfield flood press (Australia) and Lima Limo (Europe/UK). \nDanielle Nia: \nDanielle Nia is a Philadelphia-based composer and performer captivated by the endless possibilities of electronic music and experimental sounds. With influences spanning electronic music\, jazz\, classical\, world music\, and chip tunes\, Danielle’s music embodies a dynamic fusion of styles. Her ventures into modular synthesizers seamlessly integrate her experience with keyboard synthesizers\, composition\, mallet percussion\, improvisation\, computer programming\, and circuit bending. Dedicated to exploring sonic possibilities\, Danielle crafts a unique harmony of technology and artistry\, seeking out beauty through sound. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom.

SUMMARY:Horselords
DESCRIPTION:Horse Lords were founded in Baltimore\, Maryland in 2010; they evolved from the experimental collective Teeth Mountain and began as a trio with drummer Sam Haberman\, guitarist Owen Gardner\, and bassist Max Eilbacher\, soon adding alto saxophonist Andrew Bernstein to the core ensemble. Though Horse Lords grew out of the fertile Baltimore noise and leftfield rock scene\, a storied environment for artists and weirdos that has nurtured many an influential outsider band (Lungfish\, Matmos)\, their approach is more omnivorous than the stippled rhythms of instrumental electric rock would indicate. \nAcross sixteen years of frequent touring\, Horse Lords have released ten studio\, live\, and collaboration albums in addition to a split EP with fellow Baltimoreans Lower Dens\, a handful of singles and compilation tracks. For RVNG’s FRKWYS series\, the band collaborated with Berlin-based composer Arnold Dreyblatt\, a onetime student of La Monte Young and Pauline Oliveros whose just intonation chamber music was a crucial part of the post-Fluxus Downtown New York City environment. \nWith the relocation of three of the four members to Germany beginning in 2021\, the potential for more further creative exploration\, and performance opportunities including the Moers Festival (with an 11-piece lineup\, interpreting Julius Eastman’s music as well as their own)\, the interdisciplinary phases of the band’s music was poised for fascinating new directions. The band observes “We are always trying to balance working within the limitations of the quartet and pushing beyond them. \nFor their second studio album on RVNG Intl.\, Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive!\, Horse Lords have followed this notion and augmented the instrumentation\, expanding the format slightly to include bass clarinetist Madison Greenstone (TAK Ensemble)\, trombonist Weston Olencki (Nate Wooley\, RAGE Thormbones) and vocalists Nina Guo (Departure Duo) and Evelyn Saylor (Holly Herndon\, Caterina Barbieri) across a program of twelve original compositions. \nDemand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive! is a reference to a line in a poem by Russian Futurist writer Vladimir Myakovsky\, and the band have also name-checked the Bauhaus weaver Anni Albers (wife of painter Josef Albers)\, Islamic geometrical patterning\, Dutch avant-garde group the Maciunas Ensemble (themselves named after Fluxus artist and typographer George Maciunas)\, composer/writers Tom Johnson\, Henry Flynt and Catherine Christer Hennix\, and musically draw from sources as diverse as Roscoe Holcolmb\, James Brown\, Kuwaiti/Bahraini sawt\, and electronic composers Maryanne Amacher and Jaap Vink. \nAs the members are keen to point out\, Demand To Be Taken To Heaven Alive! is “a bid for the flattening of time and perception in favor of greater goods [and] the iterative nature of reaching/building a paradise in this life\, not the next\,” and the new album at hand is an illuminating starting point for eternal nowness. \n\n\n\nCategory\n\nPerformance\n\n\n\nVenue\nSolar Myth\n1131 S. SUMMARY:World to Come 2: Infra Dig
DESCRIPTION:We are presenting a series of free\, en-plain air public performances which tap into the unique musical forms of Creative Music (a genre rooted in Philadelphia history through John Coltrane and Sun Ra) and Free Improvisation. These performances will be at Christ Church Gardens. \nFollow @PeoplesMusicSupply on instagram for up to date performance info\, sign up for our email list\, and check out the event schedule at PeoplesMusicSupply.org Infra Dig is a new trio consisting of Bert Harris (bass)\, Rob Paul (percussion)\, and Thomas Patteson (alto saxophone). Taking inspiration from jazz\, creative music\, and global traditions\, their improvisations seek to map out possible worlds of sound and spirit\, from zero gravity to cosmic grooves \n \nBert Harris is an electric bass guitarist and upright bassist who is at home in several genres of music. Current projects include The Afrojazz Collective\, Gumbo Nouveau\, Naru\, String Theory\, Reggae Thunder\, Phillyska Jazz Quartet\, RK$TDY\, Philly Gumbo and Infra Dig. Bert has recorded two CDs with Philadelphia jazz legend Byard Lancaster (Pam Africa and Ancestral Link Hotel). With Philly Gumbo he can be heard on their extended 45 RPM Holy War and their CD Come and Get It. His most recent recording is on Gumbo Nouveau’s CD Seasoned. Bert’s playing ranges from straight ahead jazz\, to reggae\, Cape jazz\, ska\, and free jazz  and his original compositions incorporate those genres. \n \n \nRob Paul writes: I discovered the joy and magic of playing music in high school. I feel fortunate to have grown up in Philadelphia\, where I was exposed to the beauty of jazz and avant garde music. When I was 22\, I became a high school English teacher\, and I am proud to be teaching in the Philadelphia School district 26 years later. This work pulled me away from playing music\, because of the deep commitment I developed for helping young people in my city. My passion for music never dissipated\, and I was hopeful to rejoin the music community in Philadelphia later on. I am forever grateful for the transformative musical mentorship and close friendship I have with legendary jazz saxophonist Bobby Zankel. Bobby has reignited my passion for playing music! I am inspired by mindful artists who love to listen and improvise. Let’s play together sometime. \n \n \nThomas Patteson leads a double life as musician and musicologist. He has explored electronic music through his solo project Notions Department and his book Instruments for New Music (University of California Press\, 2016) on the history of experimental sound technologies in the early 20th century. Since 2019\, he has been performing improvised music with Aaron Pond in the shape-shifting duo project Argyle Torah. In 2021 Thomas began playing the saxophone\, inspired primarily by Ornette Coleman and Kadri Gopalnath. He recently completed The Museum of Imaginary Musical Instruments (Reaktion Books\, 2026)\, and is translating a historical study of improvisation practices in European music. Thomas is a Lecturer in Music at UPenn and Vice President of People’s Music Supply. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Ursula Rucker & Tim Motzer - "Live Off the Floor"
DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 14 MilkCrate Cafe presents a special intimate live show with legendary poet Ursula Rucker creating powerful stories with longtime collaborator & renown guitarist Tim Motzer on Wednesday evening October 14\, 8pm show. Not to be missed. Doors at 7pm \n“From the moment that Ursula Rucker and Tim Motzer first unified their singular magical words-and-music efforts on the historic stages of Philly’s Tower Theater\, opening for the legendarily conscious Nina Simone\, all bets have been thrown off the table. Whether appearing within the intimate confines of a duet setting or something broader (but no less intrinsic and interpersonal)\, the divine cacophonous wordsmith and the clamorous textural guitarist have created tactile\, co-joined waves of nuance and noise\, of beauty\, sex\, strife and solace. Alone they are epic.\nTogether\, Rucker and Motzer are crucial\, an emotional\, intergalactic soulful soundscape too rare and too righteous to miss.” A.D. Amorosi

SUMMARY:Untethered (Paul Giess/Grant Calvin Weston/Timothy Ragsdale)
DESCRIPTION:Untethered (Paul Giess/Grant Calvin Weston/Timothy Ragsdale) \nUntethered is a collective led by Paul Giess (Ropeadope) playing what their drummer\, Grant Calvin Weston (Ornette Coleman\, John Medeski\, Vernon Reid) calls “Spontaneous Creative Composition”. Their most recent album “Grasping for the Moon” was featured as album of the Day on Bandcamp in August 2025. Peter Margasak writes for Bandcamp Daily – “the music is in constant flux\, opening up and tightening\, cooling down and catching fire\, riding stasis and exploding with hyperactive motion.” The group plays a genre crossing style of improvisation that holds a deep pocketed funk next to intimate chamber music and the raw energy of a punk band next to a sensitive ballad. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom. \npeople who pay $25 will receive a free cd-r of a previous show.

SUMMARY:Goldberg Variations John Walthausen - Harpsichord
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present John Walthausen in a solo harpsichord performance at University Lutheran Church. In the 1730s\, Bach summed up his artistry writing for keyboards with a new collection: his Clavierübung or keyboard practice. In this multi volume series for harpsichord and organ\, Bach turns every genre of keyboard writing on its head: suite\, concerto\, overture\, prelude and fugue\, chorale prelude. It is in the fourth book of his Clavierübung that Bach explores variation in what would become one of his most beloved works. Exhausting the depths of embellishment possible from a simple ground bass\, Bach challenges the interpreter through thirty variations comprising some of his most virtuosic keyboard writing and some of his most intricate exploration of canon. \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST \nJohn Walthausen has been heard across Europe\, North and South America\, and Asia as a keyboard soloist and ensemble artist. Accomplished as a recitalist in both Baroque literature and contemporary keyboard works\, Walthausen has concertized throughout the world in Paris\, New York\, Washington D.C.\, Chartres\, Bogotá\, Toulouse\, Hamburg\, Milan\, Treviso\, Innsbruck\, Tokyo\, Basel\, and Zurich. From 2015 to 2016\, he served as Organist in Residence at Sapporo Concert Hall in Hokkaido\, where he performed and recorded on the Hall’s four-manual organ by Alfred Kern and in cities across Japan. In 2016\, Sapporo Concert Hall released his debut disc\, “De Fil en Aiguille.” \nA Philadelphia resident\, Walthausen appears regularly as a collaborative artist in his home city\, as well as throughout the East Coast and the Mid-Atlantic region. In 2019\, he co-founded the ensemble Filament with baroque violinist Evan Few and viola da gamba player Elena Smith. In 2022\, they recorded their debut album of the Sonatas Opus 1 of Dietrich Buxtehude\, Alchemy of Another\, called by Fanfare “artistically satisfying on all levels.” \nIn 2012\, he won first prize at the Pierre de Manchicourt International Organ Competition in Béthune\, France\, a competition devoted particularly to North German music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries\, featuring an international jury chaired by Michael Radelescu. In 2009 he was awarded first prize in the American Guild of Organists’ Regional Competition for Young Organists. \nWalthausen earned his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College\, and in 2011 he gained admission to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris. There he studied organ with Olivier Latry and Michel Bouvard\, earning a master’s with highest honors (mention très bien). In 2015\, he studied harpsichord with Jörg-Andreas Bötticher and organ with Lorenzo Ghielmi at the Schola Cantorum of Basel\, Switzerland where he was awarded a Master’s in Historical Performance. In 2024\, Walthausen served as Artistic Director for the first edition of the Philadelphia Organ Festival\, a week-long event sponsored by Partners for Sacred Places. In addition to his concert appearances\, Walthausen currently serves as Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Germantown\, Philadelphia\, PA.

SUMMARY:Alash
DESCRIPTION:Alash: \nAlash are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. Trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, and trained by legendary Tuvan musician Kongar-ool Ondar\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed new ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music\, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. \naccessibility: ramp into lobby\, then 7 stairs into theater

SUMMARY:The People United Will Never Be Defeated! - Heather O'Donnell piano
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present pianist Heather O’Donnell performing Frederick Rzewski’s iconic work The People United Will Never Be Defeated! 36 Variations on the Chilean Song ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido! at Trinity at 22nd. \nPROGRAM \nFrederic Rzewski (1938–2021)\nThe People United Will Never Be Defeated! (1975)\n36 Variations on the Chilean Song ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido! \nABOUT THE PROGRAM \nFrederic Rzewski composed The People United Will Never Be Defeated! in 1975\, creating one of the monumental works of twentieth-century piano literature. The hour-long cycle consists of thirty-six variations on the Chilean song ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!\, composed by Sergio Ortega and associated with the years surrounding Chile’s 1973 military coup. Over time\, the melody came to symbolize solidarity and the enduring human desire for dignity and self-determination. \nCommissioned for the United States Bicentennial\, the work was premiered by Ursula Oppens at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C.\, on 7 February 1976. \nRather than presenting a straightforward set of variations\, Rzewski transforms the song through an extraordinary range of musical languages – from counterpoint to jazz\, minimalism\, improvisation\, virtuosic display\, and moments of profound stillness. The result is a work that continually shifts between the individual and the collective\, certainty and doubt\, struggle and renewal. \nAlthough rooted in a specific historical moment\, the piece has long transcended its original context. Today it is regarded not only as one of the great masterpieces of contemporary piano literature but also as a meditation on resilience\, memory\, freedom\, and the enduring capacity of communities to imagine a different future. \n– H.
