SUMMARY:The Messthetics & James Brandon Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop presents punk-jazz power trio The Messthetics\, joined by fire-breathing saxophonist James Brandon Lewis\, at Solar Myth on Friday\, May 8\, 2026. \nDrummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally were the rhythm section for the iconic D.C. punk band Fugazi from its inception in 1987 until its hiatus in 2002\, reuniting for the first time to form The Messthetics with the eclectic guitar wizard Anthony Pirog. One half of the duo Janel & Anthony\, Pirog has emerged as a primary figure in the city’s out-music community. Together they’ve crafted a band approach dedicated to the live ideal\, where structure gives birth to improvisation. The New Yorker hailed their “ecstatic\, exploratory squall that lands between starry post-rock and heaving jazz fusion.”

SUMMARY:RECESS Odean Pope\, Craig McIver\, Diane Monroe\, Victor North\, Harold Smith\, and Nimrod Speaks.
DESCRIPTION:RECESS is a new immersive performance created by Odean Pope and Immanuel Wilkins. \nJoin us as we transform a North Philadelphia warehouse into a sculptural playground for sound! RECESS invites audiences inside a living model of improvisation\, in an installation that is part bandstand\, part score\, part jungle gym—designed by Immanuel Wilkins and Rachael Elliott. Performance artist Jennifer Kidwell acts as guide and facilitator in this experience of “radical play.” \nThis performance came about when Odean Pope—undisputed jazz master and elder of Philadelphia’s creative music community—was looking for ways to expand his (already wide!) creative horizons. He invited five of the most creative musicians he knew to join him in a series of sessions exploring “radical play\,” with the only instruction being: “No talk\, just play.” The resulting sessions became inspiring lessons in how attuned musicians can provoke\, respond\, and encourage one another. Envelopes were pushed! Boundaries were stretched! Magic was created! \nSo of course we asked this ensemble to take the RECESS stage and discover what they can do! It starts with Odean Pope\, who studied closely with John Coltrane in his youth and later toured extensively with Max Roach while developing his own groundbreaking Saxophone Choir. A central figure in Philadelphia’s musical life for more than half a century\, he has shaped generations of improvisers through performance and teaching. He is the recipient of a Pew Fellowship and the MidAtlantic “Living Legacy Award\,” among many other honors. \n\nOdean Pope — tenor saxophone\nCraig McIver — drums\nDiane Monroe — violin\nVictor North — soprano saxophone\nHarold Smith — didgeridoo and percussion\nNimrod Speaks — bass\n\n*This performance will be preceded by a PROCESSIONAL/HISTORY TOUR that will start at 1:30pm at N. 8th St & Cecil B. Moore\, led by Jennifer Kidwell

King\, Mick Jagger\, Jaco Pastorious\, Harry Belafonte\, Pharoah Sanders\, Jack Dejohnette\, Paul Simon\, Lou Reed\, The Allman Brothers\, Lauryn Hill\, Marcus Miller\, Dr.John\, Wayne Shorter\, the Moroccan Gnawan Masters and Public Enemy. \nCalhoun has also invested over 25 years of personal research in the Outback of Australia\, Mali\, Morocco\, Senegal\, Belize\, and Northern Brazil (among other locations) to document and study the true history of the drums\, rhythm\, sonic vibrations and their impact on modern music. One outcome of those studies has been his Mali Project\, an intelligently unique combination of jazz with indigenous West African grooves\, funk\, blues\, and ambient mysticism\, featuring Malian master Cheick Tidiane Seck. Jazz critic Herb Boyd called the ensemble’s music\, “a powerful amalgamation of beat and motion.”

SUMMARY:Son Of Goldfinger
DESCRIPTION:Sun of Goldfinger builds upon an enticing web of relationships: David Torn and Tim Berne have worked together since the ‘90s\, with the guitarist producing many of the saxophonist’s prolific releases; Ches Smith has worked with Berne in the latter’s quintet Snakeoil and other contexts. In this electrifying trio\, Torn\, Berne and Smith spontaneously weave intense musical tapestries and craft vast sound worlds of monumental and vividly-textured aural invention. The trio conjures mind-bogglingly intricate and immersive atmospherics that mutate with every performance\, blending delicate lyricism and full-throttle noise\, bleeding-edge rock and untethered jazz\, and leading the way into realms beyond genre. \nAcross a career as a guitarist\, composer\, improviser\, producer and soundscape artist\, David Torn has worked with innovators in jazz (Jan Garbarek\, The Bad Plus)\, film music (Ryuichi Sakamoto\, Carter Burwell) and rock (David Bowie\, Jeff Beck\, David Sylvian). Guitar Player magazine has declared him “one of music’s Top 50 guitarists\, ever.” Tim Berne has been declared “a saxophonist and composer of granite conviction” by The New York Times. Since learning at the elbow of St. Louis master Julius Hemphill in the ’70s\, the Syracuse\, New York-born Berne has built an expansive discography as a leader\, assembling pace-setting ensembles with a who’s who of improvisers. Born in San Diego\, CA and raised in Sacramento\, Ches Smith came up in a scene of punks and metal musicians who were listening to and experimenting with jazz and free improvisation. He has performed and recorded with Xiu Xiu\, Secret Chiefs 3 and Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog\, while leading his own projects\, Congs for Brums\, These Arches\, Made To Break and Clone Row.

SUMMARY:Walter Smith III Trio

SUMMARY:Get Up With It A Miles Davis Centennial Celebration - In A Silent Way
DESCRIPTION:With its roots in the San Francisco Bay Area\, the collective ensemble Get Up With It has been exploring the electric music of Miles Davis since the late 90s. Best known as the drummer for the Grammy-winning\, Philly-born rock band The War on Drugs\, Charlie Hall is also a professed Miles Davis fanatic who formed Get Up With It to pay homage to the iconic trumpeter’s groundbreaking electric music. \nNow in its third decade\, the adventurous ensemble will focus on three of Miles’ most revered and influential albums during this three-night residency. The run kicks off with 1969’s In a Silent Way\, the album that inaugurated Davis’ long-controversial\, now-heralded electric period. PItchfork has called the album\, “a beacon of uncanny originality and visionary foresight.” The series continues with the 1970 magnum opus Bitches Brew\, which has come to be celebrated as one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Guitarist John McLaughlin has referred to Bitches Brew as “Picasso in sound.” The series concludes with 1971’s Jack Johnson\, which originated as the soundtrack to Bill Cayton’s documentary on the famed boxer. The Guardian has called the resulting album “one of the most remarkable jazz-rock discs of the era.” \n\nCharlie Hall — drums\, percussion\nNazir Ebo — drums\nDaniel Villarreal — percussion\nDM Hotep — guitar\nRoss Bellenoit — guitar\nLuke O’Reilly — keyboard\nCorey Bernhard — keyboard\nMitch Marcus — saxophone\, keyboard\nEzra Gale — bass\nBobby Spellman — trumpet\nEmily Pecoraro — bass clarinet

SUMMARY:Madison Greenstone\, Holden Linton & ?????
DESCRIPTION:Madison Greenstone is a clarinetist\, writer\, and composer based in Brooklyn. Their solo practice\, exstatic resonances\, explores phenomenological\, material\, and spatial expressivities of sound through richly noisy timbral actions. As the clarinetist of TAK Ensemble\, “one of the most prominent ensembles in the United States practicing truly experimental music” (I Care If You Listen) they have premiered music by Tyshawn Sorey\, Eric Wubbels\, Weston Olencki\, Michelle Lou\, Jessie Cox\, Brandon López and champions some of the most radical music currently devised. Their debut solo album\, Resonance Studies in Ecstatic Consciousness (Relative Pitch Records)\, was included in Bandcamp’s Best Experimental Music of 2023 compilation\, and has been described as “one hell of a calling card” (The Wire) and “mind-blowing” (Nowhere Street). Madison can be heard on labels such as Wandelweiser Editions\, Another Timbre\, TAK Editions\, Pleasure of the Text Records\, eë editions\, Unknown Tapes\, New Focus Recordings\, Impakt Collective\, Greyfade\, Important Records\, Mengi\, and Longform Editions. \nHolden Linton is a Multi-media artist based in Philadelphia\, PA whose works reimagines physical environments into direct audio-visual experiences. His album “Thin Walls” bridges the sounds of abandoned apartments\, bedrooms he’s lived in\, and the ephemera that exists in those places into a conceptual work about memory and artificial comfort. Under his project Pallet Fountains\, he utilized found sounds and urban environments to create pseudo-tropical landscapes that are aggressive and fantastical in their nature. Whether it is through confrontational performance art\, or isolated media experiences\, Linton’s music invites the ears and eyes to engage with space in a way that is deeply anthropological and corporeal.

In 2019\, Dennis released his first two recordings\, Killing a Dixie Hummingbird and Look at My Roses\, under his main project name Search for the Infinite Light. Since then has continued to release music under this moniker\, and with the ensembles Spectral Forces & 99 Futures. Dennis considers himself fortunate to create with many close friends and collaborators in bands such as Mitamu and Deliriant. He believes that sound is the foundation of healing and wants to acknowledge all master improvisors of the past and present\, we stand on the shoulders of giants. \nJason Stein\, Damon Smith & Adam Shead: \nA Chicago-rooted improvising trio uniting bass clarinetist Jason Stein\, double bassist Damon Smith\, and percussionist Adam Shead. Since forming in late 2021\, the group has toured extensively across the Midwest and beyond\, becoming a fixture in the creative music circuit and collaborating with influential figures such as Roscoe Mitchell. Their recorded work documents a remarkably productive period\, encompassing four releases: Volumes & Surfaces (2022)\, Hum (2023)\, spi-raling horn with Marilyn Crispell (2024)\, and Live at the Hungry Brain with Marilyn Crispell (2025). Together\, these albums trace the group’s evolution from kinetic\, small-ensemble interplay toward expansive collaborations that bridge generations of avant-jazz practice. \nCritics have consistently praised the trio’s fearless energy and deep listening. All About Jazz described Volumes & Surfaces as “undiluted free jazz with energy as its calling card and attention as its driver\,” while The Free Jazz Collective called their collaboration with Marilyn Crispell “stunning” and “full of muscular interplay.” Known for their balance of precision and volatility\, Stein/Smith/Shead channel the improvisational lineage of Chicago’s creative music scene into a sound that is at once restless\, focused\, and alive to the moment. Their forthcoming 2025 tour marks the trio’s first since 2022\, signaling a new chapter for one of the most dynamic ensembles in contemporary improvised music. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom.

SUMMARY:Morton Feldman: Three Voices Charlotte Mundy\, voice
DESCRIPTION:Feldman’s “Three Voices” was written for the experimental vocalist and composer Joan LaBarbara in 1982. The original concept involved the live performer singing along with two pre-recorded parts projected through on-stage amplifiers\, creating an effect of three individual “voices”\, all with the same origin (Ms. LaBarbara). Three Voices is indeed a challenging and ground-breaking work\, and has very rarely been performed live with three singers due to its nearly impossible demands on the human voice and psyche – impeccable rhythmic concentration\, shrewd attention to tuning\, and the ability to sound as one voice in three parts. The text is based on Frank O’Hara’s poem\, Wind\, and shapes\, twists\, and morphs short phrases from the poem into an hour-long musical experience. \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST \nCanadian soprano Charlotte Mundy has been dubbed a “daredevil with an unbreakable spine” (SF Classical Voice)\, and “mesmerizing” (New York Times). As a founding member of TAK ensemble\, “one of the most prominent ensembles in the United States practicing truly experimental music” (I Care If You Listen)\, Mundy has performed at Lincoln Center and the Library of Congress\, premiering works by Tyshawn Sorey\, Erin Gee\, Eric Wubbels\, Brandon Lopez\, and Natacha Diels. Mundy is also a core member of Ekmeles\, described as “beyond expert – almost frightening in their precision” by Fanfare magazine and recent recipients of the Ernst von Siemens Ensemble Prize. \nMundy’s recent projects as a soloist include site-specific opera Newtown Odyssey by Kurt Rohde and Marie Lorenz; premieres of concert works by Alyssa Regent and Aida Shirazi\, and the debut of a new collaborative multimedia project with Christian Quiñones. Past performances include critically acclaimed renditions of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire\, Boulez’s Le Marteau sans Maître\, Feldman’s Three Voices\, George Benjamin’s Into the Little Hill\, Iannis Xenakis’ Akanthos\, and a set of music for voice and electronics presented by New York Festival of Song\, described as “an oasis of radiant beauty” by the New York Times.

SUMMARY:Max Johnson Sextet
DESCRIPTION:Max Johnson Sextet: \nComposer\, bassist\, and improviser Max Johnson presents his brand new sextet in the premiere of “Without Fear\,” a new concert-length work performed alongside Anna Webber (tenor saxophone\, flute)\, Yuma Uesaka (soprano saxophone\, clarinet)\, Nate Wooley (trumpet)\, Lester St. Louis (cello)\, Max Johnson (double bass)\, and Jeff Davis (drumset\, vibraphone). The piece is a sprawling\, style-blurring composition that explores the many musical worlds Johnson has inhabited over the past fifteen years\, weaving together elements of jazz\, chamber music\, folk music\, free improvisation\, and progressive rock. \nThe work draws from Johnson’s experience as an in-demand performer and prolific composer\, having performed internationally and recorded with artists such as Anthony Braxton\, Geri Allen\, the Daedalus Quartet\, David Grisman\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Mary Halvorson\, Mivos Quartet\, and several alumni of Frank Zappa’s bands. Conceived as a musical ecosystem where diverse influences coexist and interact\, “Without Fear” highlights the individual voices and abilities of the ensemble while bringing Johnson’s expansive musical vision into a single personal work. \nAs a lover of comic books\, the piece is inspired by the Green Lantern\, whose power ring can create anything imaginable through sheer force of will\, so long as its bearer remains without fear. Like the ring itself\, the work imagines a creative space where the many musical languages Johnson inhabits can live together within a single composition. \naccessibility: space is on the second floor up a flight of stairs.

SUMMARY:Paolo Angeli
DESCRIPTION:Paolo Angeli: \nSardinian musician Paolo Angeli’s professional career was spent deep in the avant garde\, exploring post-rock\, experimental opera\, and more. His style was influenced heavily by that of guitarist Giovanni Scanu\, who was a major proponent of the classic Sardinian canto a chitarra style. The combination of inputs inspired Angeli to create his own instrument: an 18-stringed hybrid of guitar\, baritone\, violoncello\, and drums\, adorned with hammers\, pedals\, and even propellers operating at various speeds. Working closely with craftsman Francesco Concas\, Angeli created an instrument that enables an altogether new type of performance combining\, referencing\, and transcending free jazz\, folk noise\, and minimal pop. \n“Paulo Angeli is a musical conjurer\, an artist whose imaginative leaps defy gravity. A composer\, ethnomusicologist and instrument builder who draws on his deep knowledge of traditional Sardinian music\, he inhabits a timeless zone as a soil-rooted master and brash experimentalist. While suffused with Mediterranean cadences\, Angeli’s original pieces encompass flamenco\, jazz\, Baroque\, post-rock and new music. He plays a prepared Sardinian guitar of his own invention\, a fantastical 18-string hybrid combining elements of guitar\, cello and drums. \nA feast for the eyes as well as the ears\, Angeli in full flight is an astounding sight\, as he bows\, strikes\, hammers\, plucks and strums an instrument with strings going in all directions and foot-pedal-controlled motorized propellers. With sympathetic strings creating shimmering drones\, he adjusts tunings on the fly to create exquisitely lapidary\, orchestral music using electronic effects in real time (he eschews loopers\, creating every sound in the moment). \nIt’s not surprising that this singular musician has improvised and collaborated with masters such as Pat Metheny\, Fred Frith\, Evan Parker\, Zeena Parkins\, and Phillip Greenlief. Angeli’s music may be unclassifiable\, but it takes no expertise to recognize its strange and extravagant beauty”-SF Jazz \nvenue is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Marisa Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Marisa Anderson’s music transcends borders. The topography of her work interrogates the intersections of artistry and expression with form and tradition. A singular guitarist and voracious musical collaborator\, Anderson crafts pieces bursting with equal parts reverence and curiosity\, contouring familiar shapes into work that is wholly her own. Anderson has spent decades mining the veins of the complicated\, interconnected American folk traditions she was steeped in from a young age\, stretching beyond those traditions and incorporating the vocabulary and techniques of vernacular and folk musics from across time and beyond boundary into her work. Eschewing replication or revival\, Anderson’s music lives in conversation with tradition. “My approach to tradition is with the hands that I have and the history that I have\,” notes Anderson. “In that way it’s a collaboration–you don’t go into collaboration trying to play like the other person\, you go in trying to find out how to play together.”

SUMMARY:Kalia Vandever
DESCRIPTION:Kalia Vandever is a Grammy Award-winning trombonist and composer based in Brooklyn. Their approach to the trombone is distinctive and defined by their sonorous tone and lyrical improvisational voice. They lean into the challenges of the instrument and allow patience and melody to guide their process. In their compositional practice\, Vandever draws from their love of songs and improvisation\, creating a landscape of sounds that resonate in the body and hold the listener. \nWriting for WBGO Jazz\, Nate Chinen said that Vandever’s 2022 sophomore album Regrowth “confirms [their] strengths as a composer and bandleader with a distinctly contemporary point of view.” (Nate Chinen\, WBGO Jazz). 2025’s Another View featured the stellar cast of Mary Halvorson\, Kanoa Mendenhall and Kayvon Gordon and was praised by Downbeat for “its entrancing\, cyclical rhythms and longing melodicism.” At Solar Myth\, Vandever will be taking another bold stride forward in their ongoing creative evolution.

SUMMARY:Anthony Tidd Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Anthony Tidd is a creative musician\, composer\, producer\, educator and curator who over a 30 year career has notably performed with\, and produced songs on multi-platinum albums for\, many artists including; The Roots\, Steve Coleman\, Meshell Ndegeocello\, David Byrne\, Macy Gray\, Wayne Krantz\, Zap Mama\, Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Lady Gaga\, The Black Eyed Peas\, Orrin Evans\, Fergie\, Jill Scott\, Ursula Rucker\, and many more. His debut album\, Quite Sane – The Child of Troubled Times (2002)\, which fuses elements of hip-hop and funk with jazz\, quickly became a modern staple within creative music circles. Joining Tidd will be saxophonists Steve Lehman and Mark Shim and drummer Damion Reid – all of whom share intertwined histories\, collaborations and interests\, as well as intersections with the foundational M-Base Collective. \n  \n\nAnthony Tidd — bass\nDamion Reid — drums\nSteve Lehman — saxophone\nMark Shim — saxophone
