SUMMARY:Kahil ElZabar / David Murray Duo
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop is honored to present a meeting of two avant-garde legends\, as percussionist Kahil El’Zabar and saxophonist David Murray join forces at Solar Myth on Sunday\, June 21\, 2026. \nLegendary percussionist and bandleader Kahil El’Zabar and saxophone icon David Murray have enjoyed a storied collaboration that has spanned more than four decades and traversed the globe several times over. Both\, as Ron Wynn wrote for JazzTimes\, “epitomize in their actions and approach the highest aspects of the jazz life [and are] dedicated to a musical vision unconcerned with trends or prevailing wisdom.” \nEl’Zabar & Murray have captivated audiences worldwide for over 40 years. The duo returns to Solar Myth for their latest tour\, which they’ve christened WE BE FREE—a title that epitomizes the boundless spirit of freedom and exploration that has been the touchstone for their remarkable careers. This new tour continues to build on their shared legacy as pioneers of Great Black Music\, bringing together decades of innovation\, global performance history\, and cultural impact. Unpredictable as it may be\, the collaboration promises a dynamic and deeply expressive program rooted in spiritual jazz improvisation and the ongoing exploration of freedom through sound.

SUMMARY:Fred Frith & Walnut Brain
DESCRIPTION:Fred Frith: \nFred Frith is a pioneer of the extended electric guitar. He learned to compose in \nHenry Cow\, developed his song-writing skills in Art Bears\, explored his multi- instrumentalism in Skeleton Crew\, rocked the house with Massacre and is still doing all of those things\, having been in one band or another continuously since 1964! Meanwhile his work has been performed by both Baroque and contemporary music ensembles\, along with string quartets\, chamber orchestras\, and a whole range of groups and artists in the ever-expanding field of semi-popular music. Fred composes extensively for film and dance\, and taught improvisation for years at Mills College in Oakland\, California and the Musik Akademie in Basel\, Switzerland. His life-long passion for improvising has increasingly led him to work with artists who don’t necessarily define themselves as improvisers\, including Brazilian drummer Mariá Portugal\, cellist Paula Sanchez\, and bricoleur extraordinaire Sudhu Tewari. Fred is the subject of Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzels’ award-winning film Step Across the Border. \n“if (you) haven’t seen Fred improvise solo\, (you) must. Just to see him live\, it has to be done. It’s one of the wonders of the world.” —Marc Ribot \n“Fred Frith is a great drummer.” —Miles Davis \n“Frith should be sellotaped to Derek Bailey and pushed off a cliff.” —Skelidude\, YouTube \nWalnut Brain: \nWalnut Brain\, the duo of Alina Josan and Steve Heise\, mess around with a custom-made diddley bow and an electric guitar to make decidedly earthbound sounds that reach for the clouds or the stars or whatever’s out there. A diddley bow is an instrument whose single string\, when struck and bowed by a sensitive player\, emits sounds that both scrape and sing. As we all know\, an electric guitar is a juiced up instrument capable of producing some of the most exciting sounds imaginable. In the intuitive hands of Walnut Brain\, these instruments weave together to oscillating rhythms and fleeting melodies. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom.

SUMMARY:Free Range- Matt Davis's Aerial Photography
DESCRIPTION:Chamber Music in multiple idioms. Tom Kraines features in this eclectic ensemble. $20 with drinks provided 🙂 \nEstablished in 2002\, Matt Davis’ Aerial Photograph is a “wildly imaginative” (Jazziz Magazine”) ensemble that explores the intersection of jazz\, contemporary classical and folk music\, as well as social\, cultural and historical observation through aural histories. Described as “Inspired” by Downbeat Magazine and “Eloquent” by JazzTimes\, the group has performed throughout the eastern United States\, as well as in China and South Korea. The instrumentation of the group varies\, but often consists of a string quartet\, guitar\, bass\, drums and several wind instruments. Aerial Photograph’s original repertoire is inspired by the cultural pluralism that is fundamental to American society. The compositional process begins with communication: Davis conducts conversations with communities that include senior citizens\, recovering addicts\, children\, immigrants\, religious believers\, community volunteers\, incarcerated\, homeless\, teachers\, caregivers\, and artists and musicians. These conversations are recorded and are then woven into compositions that endeavor to express the feelings\, emotions\, and stories that are shared. The resulting music gives audiences the opportunity to find points of connection to the music\, and to experience familiar or unfamiliar communities in a new and engaging way. The Sway of Rivers is in the process of recording\, and is slated for release in 2023. This new music brings several new elements to the mix\, including home-made percussion instruments\, vocals\, and new approaches of expressing forms and time in music. \nRSVP\n \nFree Range is a monthly concert series providing artists with important resources in today’s content-driven music scene\, and providing audiences with exceptional and affordable (even better than a city-wide!) Jazz and improvised music. \n \nFree Range prioritizes local musicians\, giving all performers high-quality audio and video of their show\, full use/rights to their materials\, including the raw audio for additional production if they so choose. \n \nPlease follow @free_range_music to stay up to date. \n \nSponsored by Love City Brewing & Urban Movement Arts/Philly Music Factory

SUMMARY:de/composition: Native Trees\, Sonic Roots
DESCRIPTION:The preeminent Philadelphia DJ\, Composer\, Producer\, Sound Designer and Music Experimentalist June Lopez will perform de/compostion: Native Trees\, Sonic Roots\, a set of genre-defying music and experimental soundscapes based on the inspiration of found sounds in Tookany/Tacony-Frankford (TTF) Watershed and Tacony Creek Park. \nde/compostion: Native Trees\, Sonic Roots will be inspired by the field recordings and audio research June is engaged with\, including the trees and other elements from the watershed. Natural processes\, such as composting\, are also sources for sound. \nJune will be in collaboration with the video projection team of Samara Talkin and Neil Cippon. They will immerse the venue space in projections of collected images and footage of the watershed and nature on the interior of Bennett Compost in synchronization with the music and sound. \n(WARNING: Intense lighting will be used during this show. It will not be safe for those with epilepsy and other conditions with sensitivity to light.) \nSpecial guest narrator and our “in-house science dramaturg”\, Dr. Jame McCray will illuminate audiences with narratives from the watershed. \nWritten and recorded reflections by local residents on their relationship with trees and nature will also be interwoven into the soundscape. \nThis unique site specific event will be hosted at Bennett Compost\, adjacent to Tacony Creek Park. \nThis event is supported by a grant from TreePhilly\, a Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Program; PHMC\, and William Penn Foundation. \nTreePhilly is a program of Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and Fairmount Park Conservancy\, sponsored by TD Bank. We help Philadelphia residents plant and care for trees. \nAdditional support provided by our friends at Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership. \n

SUMMARY:Teiku
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop presents the Chicago and Detroit based creative music ensemble Teiku at Solar Myth on Sunday\, June 28\, 2026. \nChicago pianist Josh Harlow and Detroit percussionist Jonathan Barahal founded Teiku on the foundation of the music they grew up singing: their Jewish-Ukranian ancestors’ Passover songs\, unique to each respective family and passed down aurally over generations. Harlow and Taylor’s families each steward a number of unique melodies that likely originated in their ancestral villages but survive only through their family lines. \nThe band is made complete by bass clarinetist Jason Stein (Natural Information Society\, Hearts and Minds) and bassist Jaribu Shahid (Sun Ra Arkestra\, Art Ensemble of Chicago\, Griot Galaxy)\, and the group moves fluidly between frenetic density\, subtle timbral explorations\, electronic processing\, and complex mixed meter\, among other stylistic territories. Teiku is a Talmudic acronym that roughly translates to “unanswered question\,” a fitting description of the process of discovery that creative improvisers know well: creating spontaneous and cohesive sonic environments that are felt viscerally but cannot be expressed in words. This project reflects its leaders’ musical and spiritual sensibilities: a yearning for insight\, an acute sensitivity to the present moment\, a space made for searching deeper.

SUMMARY:ResoNation Trio
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop is thrilled to present the return of maverick trumpeter Steven Bernstein with his striking new acoustic trio at Solar Myth on Tuesday\, June 30\, 2026. \nFew artists exult in the joyous exhilaration and intrepid spirit of communal music-making with the fervor and vitality of visionary bandleader\, trumpeter\, composer and arranger Steven Bernstein. In his new chordless trio with master improvisers Scott Colley on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums\, Bernstein applies that bold passion to an uncharacteristically pared-down setting. Their startling debut album\, ResoNation Trio\, features contemplative explorations that may feel like a departure from the raucous spirit that characterizes so much of the trumpeter’s work\, yet the trio discovers such an audacious beauty and celebratory gusto in these sparse environments that the music feels uniquely Bernstein’s. \nResoNation Trio is also a rarity in his oeuvre for featuring Bernstein – whose mastery of the little-used slide trumpet has become so central to his sonic identity – exclusively playing valve trumpet and flugelhorn. The spacious\, skeletal pieces that Bernstein penned for ResoNation Trio open new and expansive pathways for the veteran trumpeter while harkening back to his early experiences on the experimental 1980s Downtown scene and the influence of pioneers like Don Cherry\, Lester Bowie\, Baikida Carroll\, Wadada Leo Smith and Butch Morris.

In the 80’s she was in the synth-pop band The Vels (Polygram Records)\, and in the 90’s she sang and played bass with grunge band Die Monster Die (Roadrunnner Records). \nIn recent years she has released a series of self-produced solo LPs on independent labels such as Olde English Spelling Bee\, Sixteen Tambourines (Tokyo)\, and NNA Tapes. To date – Cohen has released 7 solo LPs\, her 8th – “Archaeology” – comes out in October 2025. \nIn addition to her musical output\, Cohen is also a visual artist known primarily for her work in stop motion collage animation. She has created numerous music videos\, and her work has been shown in galleries and screenings worldwide. \nBuilt by Scriabin: \nBuilt by Scriabin brings together a group of long-time collaborators to explore the outer boundaries of the Cosmic American Folk landscape\, channeling songwriter Jim Strong’s instincts for noise\, paranoid psychedelia\, and surrealism into meticulously crafted full-band arrangements. Their sound has been described as “Leonara Carrington does the basement tapes” (Wire Magazine). After its beginnings as a short-lived musical saw orchestra\, the project has evolved into something strangely melodic—even catchy—seemingly far removed from the Himalayan foothills where the visionary composer Alexander Scriabin imagined immersive environments of sound and light as a means of accelerating human evolution. Wait and see. Strong has been active in underground music for two decades\, performing in projects as varied as Melkings\, Weyes Blood\, Eyes of the Amaryllis\, and Aponia A.D. In addition to building homemade musical instruments\, he works across a range of media as a visual artist. He is joined by Jordan Burgis\, Jacob Brunner\, Gabe Romero\, and possibly other special guests. \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.

DESCRIPTION:Presented in Collaboration with Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture \nSpite of Darkness: \nSpite of Darkness is a Detroit-based experimental ensemble led by Palestinian-American composer and violinist Mike Khoury. Built on a unique structural foundation of two violins and two drummers\, the quartet explores the intersection of contemporary classical\, avant-jazz\, and Arab-American musical traditions. \nThe group—which features Khoury and violinist Indira Edwards—is known for its raw\, percussive energy and intricate melodic interplay. The drum chairs are held by Bill Dixon alum\, Ben Hall\, and Ali Allen Colding who worked with James Blood Ulmer\, Sam Sanders and Dorothy Ashby. SUMMARY:Cosmic Music: The Life\, Art and Transcendence of Alice Coltrane
DESCRIPTION:Please join Ars Nova Workshop to celebrate the release of journalist Andy Beta’s essential new biography\, Cosmic Music: The Life\, Art and Transcendence of Alice Coltrane\, featuring a performance by keyboardist Surya Botofasina\, at Solar Myth on Thursday\, June 18\, 2026. \nIn Cosmic Music\, music journalist Andy Beta traces the life\, career and legacy of pianist\, organist\, harpist and composer Alice Coltrane\, one of the most misunderstood artists of the last sixty years. The first full biography of this remarkable\, groundbreaking artist is an elegant\, deeply researched corrective to the historical—and critical—record. It elevates Coltrane to her proper place alongside her husband\, the iconic saxophonist John Coltrane\, as one of the greatest musical visionaries of the 20th century\, and also as a singular artist in Western music\, one who became a spiritual leader in her lifetime. \nTo celebrate the biography’s release\, Ars Nova will present keyboardist Surya Botofasina\, who was raised as a spiritual student of Alice Coltrane at the Sai Anantam Ashram in Southern California. Her musical and religious teachings continue to have a profound effect on the keyboardist\, whose career has since gone on to take in acting stints in the TV series Vinyl and Boardwalk Empire alongside a diverse range of musical collaborations with the likes of Reggie Workman\, Joey Bada$$\, Gangstarr’s GURU\, Amel Larrieux\, N’Dea Davenport\, Georgia Anne Muldrow\, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. \n\n\n\n\nThis is an 21+ event.

SUMMARY:Sasha Berliner
DESCRIPTION:Originally from San Francisco\, California\, Sasha Berliner is a rock drummer turned vibraphonist who studied under Stefon Harris. At 21\, she became the youngest individual in the poll’s history to top the “Rising Star – Vibraphone” category in the DownBeat Critics’ Poll. She has continued to be voted one of the top ten vibraphonists in the poll every year since 2021. Writing in All About Jazz\, critic Paul Rauch said\, “Berliner is in the firmament of the here and now in modern jazz\, and appears likely to occupy that upper stratosphere for some time to come.” \nThe politically charged\, style-blending\, alternative sound of Berliner’s 2019 debut\, Azalea\, employed digital effects\, synths\, audio speech samples\, and strings\, bringing together her diverse musical background and influences. Since then she has released the live outing Tabula Rasa and two further studio offerings\, Onyx (2022) and Fantome (2025). In addition to performing with her own band\, Berliner has recorded and performed live with such renowned musicians as Tyshawn Sorey\, Nicholas Payton\, Christian McBride\, and Cecile Mclorin Salvant.

SUMMARY:Lesley Mok\, Koof Ibi & LN Celestine
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented with The Low Pass: \nLesley Mok: \nLesley Mok is a New York City-based percussionist and sound artist. Their work is guided by a continual search for the connection between the mundane and the divine\, the experience and manipulation of time\, and a desire to capture emotional dissonance and complexity. Lesley’s ongoing explorations with composition and improvisation are most notably documented in their debut album The Living Collection (released May 2023 on American Dreams Records). The album\, described as “an exquisite and stimulating work” by All About Jazz and “a singularly personal statement” by Jazz Trail Magazine\, was named International Debut Album of the Year at the 2024 Deutscher Jazz Preis. As a collaborator\, Lesley has shared the stage with Tomeka Reid\, William Parker\, Ingrid Laubrock\, Marilyn Crispell\, Craig Taborn\, Myra Melford\, Mary Halvorson\, and Rafiq Bhatia among others. They have performed throughout the Americas\, Asia\, and Europe. \nTheir new release Transient combines drums and electronics to paint a landscape that explores the sculptural qualities of beat-making\, ambience\, and movement. Inspired by free jazz\, noise\, sounds from the natural environment\, and artists like Autechre and Robert Hood\, this record traverses a soundscape that goes from kinetic maximalism to delicate stillness\, creating a listening experience that bends and warps time. \nKoof Ibi: \nKoof Ibi is a multi-instrumentalist in the Philadelphia area. You can find him strolling down Broad Street with brass bands like The West Philadelphia Orchestra\, or sharing the stage with rockstars like Japanese Breakfast for their hometown gigs. Koof has played every genre of music Philly has to offer and incorporates all of it into his own musical style. When he’s not playing music he’s filming and editing the Random Tea Sessions\, a music video series highlighting other musicians in Philadelphia\, or he’s behind the lens covering live shows for the WXPN. \nAt his solo shows Koof combines live instruments\, loops\, and guitar pedals to create surprising soundscapes and sonic liberation. \nLN Celestine: \n“LN Celestine met us at our level\, crouched on the floor like a catcher as she powered up her circular arc of small electronics and effects pedals. Through live looping\, Celestine built up a ragged battalion of drones\, bowing her violin and singing wordless notes into a microphone in sparse iterations. For a crowd dressed almost exclusively in browns and blacks\, this sort of Realtree hunting-cap ambient fit right in (…) The Grouper aesthetic tells us that the end is near\, that the technology we so desperately cling to will soon be dumped in the woods next to yesteryear’s tractor\, rusted and mossed over\, and it clearly resonates with this generation of art-minded young people who have only ever read about prosperity. LN Celestine offered a peaceful space for decay.”-YellowGreenRed \nvenue is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Grex\, Ashé Mystics & 90eeze
DESCRIPTION:Grex: \nKarl Evangelista – guitar\, voice\, drums\, samples\, misc. \nRei Scampavia – synth\, voice\, drums\, misc. \nGrex is an art rock/experimental music duo based out of Oakland\, California. In biological terms\, a “grex” is an entity composed of several smaller organisms. Grex (the band) explores the meeting point between surreal songcraft and the dark outer reaches of experimental music. The group has been called an “otherworldly experience” (Eugene Weekly) and “true genre warping music” (KFJC)\, recalling at turns the ecstatic energy of John Coltrane\, the electronic squall of Death Grips\, and the lilting indie rock of Mitski. \nGrex has performed at Myra Melford’s New Frequnices Festival\, The Switchboard Music Festival\, The Sonic Circuits Festival (DC)\, and the United States of Asian America Festival\, and organized multiple online Lockdown Festivals in the midst of the 2020-2021 coronavirus outbreak. The band has worked with Fred Frith\, Tony Levin\, Marshall Trammell (Black Spirituals)\, Scott Amendola (Nels Cline\, TJ Kirk)\, and Asian Improv aRts\, and Evangelista is an active improvising guitarist alongside the likes of Andrew Cyrille\, Louis Moholo-Moholo\, Oliver Lake\, Ben Goldberg\, Alexander Hawkins\, and Trevor Watts. \nAshé Mystics: \nThe Ashé Mystics are Kevin Diehl\, Julius Masri & Joshua Marquez. They create a world of sound with electronic circuitry\, improv and percussive underpinnings. \nKevin Diehl is a Musician\, Composer\, Arts Organizer\, Drummer\, and Percussionist. Among his current projects is a new trio featuring Chad Taylor and Joe Chambers. Their eponymously titled debut record\, Onilu\, is due for release in Fall 2023. It features compositions by all three multi -instrumentalists. Onilu is a Yoruba word meaning “drummers.” Another project is Justice: The Vocal Works of Oliver Lake. A vocal trio joins his ensemble Sonic Liberation Front in performing the works of this widely acclaimed composer. \nJulius Masri is a Philadelphia based multi instrumentalist\, and performer/composer for the city’s dance community at large. His music focuses on improvisatory methods and syncretic / linguistic exchanges within various musical languages including Jazz\, Metal\, AfroCuban\, Experimental Noise\, and Arabic music. Born in Tripoli\, Lebanon\, he moved to the States in 1990 and picked up drumming a year later. He studied with Philadelphia instructors Carl Mottola\, Elaine Hoffman-Watts\, and as an undergraduate at Bard College\, with AACM’s Thurman Barker\, Richard Teitelbaum\, and Joan Tower. Julius plays drums\, circuit modified Casio keyboards\, Oud\, Kamancheh (aka Rabab\, Spike Fiddle)\, and various other instruments. \nJoshua Marquez is a Filipino-American composer and activist whose award-winning music explores the liminal space between tone and noise as a means to investigate the complexities and duality of Asian American identity. Searing a sonic imprint of cultural identity\, his tranquil investigations of the noise spectrum represent the internal conflicts of multiculturalism and the struggles of alienation and assimilation through the fusion and fission of disparate timbres. Hailed as “cutting-edge” (The Gazette)\, “haunting” (The Daily Iowan)\, and “creepy” (Fanfare Magazine)\, Marquez’s polemic deconstruction of sound is consumed by ever-evolving rituals of disintegrated perspectives from a postcolonial lens. \n90eeze: \n90eeze is a spiritual improvisor’s collaborative\, described by The Midbrow as “a mixture of Flying Luttenbachers\, John Zorn\, Ascension-era John Coltrane influences\, and maybe a little bit of Black MIDI. Consisting of guitar\, drums/percussion\, saxophone/flute\, bass\, and MIDI flute/programming\, it was like nothing was off the table with this band.” \nAlchemical\, Transcendent\, hoe out the soul… Express the inexpressible\, pure catharsis… \n90eeze was formed in early 2024 by Kyle Balles (drum/percussion) & Connor Eccles (guitar). Soon after Quinn Collins (bass) joined as the pervasive / constant 3rd member. \nOther auxiliary/interchangeable members Kyle Press (sax)\, Pureply (electronics/midi flute)\, Paul Geiss (trumpet/electronics)\, Dan Kochersberger (sax). \nAccessibility statement: Located on the 2nd floor up a steep flight of stairs. Ramp (also steep) in back available\, please contact us for more information.

SUMMARY:NOMON Mikel Patrick Avery
DESCRIPTION:NOMON is an electro-percussion duo of sisters Shayna and Nava Dunkelman\, united by a shared vision to expand how percussion can speak\, move\, and connect. They are driven by curiosity\, exploring rhythm not only as sound\, but as energy\, gesture\, and emotion. They believe percussion can embody both structure and freedom\, precision and vulnerability. \nAfter spending years apart working on their own unique voices\, they came together in 2018 to form NOMON. \nBorn and raised in Tokyo\, Japan to an Indonesian mother and an American father\, the sisters became multi-instrumentalists performing alongside their mother\, a musician and composer active in Asia and the Middle East. \nOpener: Mikel Patrick Avery \nA percussionist\, composer/improvisor\, filmmaker\, photographer\, and designer of modern pedal and electronic instruments\, artist Mikel Patrick Avery considers this multiplicity as one practice: creative problem solving.
