SUMMARY:Sound House : Anna Johnson \, iiisa\, Addison Rider
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented with The Low Pass. Sound House returns at an all new location! Each performance takes place in a different room.\nAnna Johnson:\nAnna Johnson unites electroacoustic improvisation with backgrounds in medieval folk traditions and sacred music. Based in drone and hypnotic repetition\, she is invested in vocal expression as a portal to somatic and emotional presence. Anna’s performances often integrate projection installations of her textural film work\, and her approach to live art is ritualistic: she seeks embodied and communal experiences of vulnerability and spiritual catharsis. She is drawn to the meeting points between personal and mythical\, present and ancient.\nAnna is based in Chicago and tours regularly in North America and Europe. She originates from Minnesota\, where she was raised with Celtic and Anglo folk traditions and sacred choral music\, and studied both Western classical as well as traditional Eastern European polyphony. She holds an MFA from the Performance department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in Studio Art from Macalester College. Anna’s debut EP Unknowing was released in 2025 on UK label Industrial Coast and her debut LP Swarm of Tongues releases fall 2026 on Somnimage. She was awarded an Outer Ear Session at Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studio in spring 2026 for a recording project\, and selected as a finalist for National Sawdust’s 2026 Hildegard Commission\, which will culminate in a December 2026 concert featuring a performance of her compositional work by Trinity Choir and the National Sawdust ensemble.\niiisa:\niiisa is the electroacoustic solo project of NYC-based latinx improviser-composer\, isabel crespo pardo. Merging field recordings\, poemsongs\, and familial voices from their home in Costa Rica\, iiisa builds memory portals for the kindling of transformation. With a “pliable and fearless voice” (I Care If You Listen)\, they deftly guide the listener through ephemeral vignettes. Their work has been presented by Roulette Intermedium\, Big Ears Festival\, and Pioneer Works\, and their debut album will be released in Fall 2026 on Leaving Records.\nAddison Rider:\nAddison Rider is a Philadelphia-based composer\, performer and multimedia artist. Her work builds around the idea of perceptual intimacy\, inviting listeners into musical environments that feel observant and inhabitable rather than strictly analytical. She aims to write music that breathes\, music that offers sincerity\, music that understands. Drawing on her background as a rock musician and songwriter\, Rider’s output ranges from acoustic and electroacoustic works\, to improvisatory electronic performance\, and film and media scoring. Her recent projects engage with subjects of mindfulness\, found sound\, indexicality\, meaning-making\, faith\, queer identity\, religious deconstruction/reconstruction\, and PTSD.\naccessibility: the performances will be taking place in multiple rooms requiring the climbing of stairs.\nThis venue is a sober space

SUMMARY:Nate Mercereau presents Fantastic Thoughts
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop presents the visionary multi-instrumentalist\, composer and producer Nate Mercereau with his new project Fantastic Thoughts at Solar Myth on Saturday\, October 24\, 2026. \nIn a remarkably short time\, the Los Angeles-based artist Nate Mercereau has amassed a dizzying catalogue of solo releases\, collaborations\, and production\, writing and instrumentation credits. He was an integral part of the cadre of inventive musicians involved in André 3000’s seminal New Blue Sun\, and has partaken in numerous collaborations with musician/producer/all around luminary Carlos Niño\, who will join Mercereau at Solar Myth. \nEven before those notable efforts\, Mercereau was heavily immersed in the Bay Area Music scene circa 2006-2012; toured extensively with legendary drummer Sheila E; and has lent his craftsman’s touch (as a producer\, songwriter and player) to recordings by artists as prominent and disparate as Leon Bridges\, King Princess\, Lizzo\, Jay Z\, The Weeknd\, Shawn Mendes\, No ID and Sade\, Tom Misch\, John Legend\, P!nk\, and A$AP Rocky. His latest release\, Fantastic Thoughts\, offers the latest development in his uniquely cosmic take on “Progressive Music\,” at once paying homage to and transcending the traditional lineages of jazz fusion and prog rock to arrive at what he has called a “Now Zone of Infinite Freedom.” \nFeaturing\n\n Nate Mercereau presents Fantastic Thoughts \n\nNate Mercereau – guitar\nCarlos Niño – percussion\nAustin Williamson – drums

SUMMARY:Blackbox Ensemble Works by Tania Leon\, Morton Feldman\, and Elliott Carter
DESCRIPTION:BlackBox Ensemble presents a program honoring milestones in American history\, culture\, and music: the centennial of pioneering American composer Morton Feldman and the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The program pairs works by Feldman with Elliott Carter’s “A Mirror on Which to Dwell\,” settings of Elizabeth Bishop poems written in 1976 to honor the United States bicentennial. In dialogue with these works is Tania Leon’s “In the Field\,” a song cycle setting of poetry by Carlos Pintado reflecting on the historical landmarks of Philadelphia which\, in the words of the composer\, “reflects the love and respect we all feel for the multiple and diverse communities coming together to create a nation.” \nPROGRAM \nMorton Feldman: Four Songs to E.E. Cummings\nTania Leon: In the Field\nElliot Carter: A Mirror on Which to Dwell \nFeaturing Amber Evans\, Soprano \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nDescribed as “ambitious” by The New Yorker\, the New York City–based BlackBox Ensemble creates immersive\, interdisciplinary\, and site-responsive performances that engage deeply with classical traditions while reimagining them through contemporary lenses\, opening space for new ideas\, collaborations\, and ways of listening. \nBlackBox has presented work at leading museums\, festivals\, and performance spaces across the U.S.\, including the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art\, The Whitney Museum\, Bang on a Can’s Long Play Festival\, National Sawdust\, Roulette Intermedium\, the Clark Art Institute\, the Noguchi Museum\, and PS21. The ensemble has toured nationally and held residencies at universities including NYU\, University of Chicago\, Penn State\, George Washington University\, UC Davis\, University of Richmond\, University of Michigan\, University of Florida\, and San Francisco State University\, among others. Recent highlights include a three-performance run of Speculative Listening: The Sonic World of Julius Eastman\, a program exploring Eastman’s influences curated by Eastman scholar Isaac Jean-François in collaboration with Kyle Marshall Choreography\, as well as The Sound of Space Between Us\, a site-specific outdoor music and dance performance at the Clark Art Institute conceived by flutist Annie Nikunen. \nOur name\, BlackBox\, comes from the many meanings the term holds. In theatre\, a black box is a bare\, flexible space—four dark walls that can transform into anything\, creating an environment ripe for bold experimentation and intimate connection. In science and technology\, a black box is a system with known inputs and outputs\, but the mystery of what happens inside makes it compelling. For us\, we believe music\, as a cultural medium\, lives in that same space—enacting an ambiguous but vital relationship between artistic expression and social life\, where sound\, expression\, and human experience collide in ways that can’t always be explained\, but always resonate. Guided by the spirit of the theatrical black box\, we create programs that invite risk\, innovation\, and connection\, presenting contemporary classical music in ways that feel fresh\, human\, and alive.

SUMMARY:Synth Foundations (Four-Part Course) Taught by Eugene Lew and Carolyn Zaldivar Snow
DESCRIPTION:Modular synthesizers are wonderfully personal instruments: open-ended\, endlessly flexible\, and built on a few simple ideas. This four-part class starts with those foundations\, including signal flow\, voltage\, gates\, triggers\, and clocks\, then puts them to work across different kinds of music making. With extended hands-on time in the Neighborhood Sound Lab\, you’ll build patches for drones\, percussion\, loops\, and experimental soundscapes\, developing your own approach as you go. By the end\, you’ll know how to sit down at any synthesizer and make it your own. \n\nCLASS DETAILS \nThe class meets on four consecutive Tuesdays\, October 27\, November 3\, 10\, and 17\, 2026\, from 6:30 to 8:00pm in the Community Synth Studio at AMLA/Esperanza. \nThis class is 18+. Class size is limited to 10. No previous experience in music or synthesizers is required. \nAdvance ticket reservation is required to attend. \n\nQUESTIONS \nQuestions? Email SoundLab@bowerbird.org. \n\nPART OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD SOUND LAB \nThis course is one part of the Neighborhood Sound Lab\, a Bowerbird project that also offers a free community synth studio\, classes\, workshops\, and community events. See the project page for an overview of the program and a list of classes and events. \n\n\nABOUT THE TEACHERS \nEugene Lew is a Philadelphia-based sound artist\, producer\, educator\, and organizer primarily engaged in performance\, design\, access\, management\, transformation\, (attempted) capture\, storage\, and playback of shared IRL experiences\, with a sound/music bias. The fleeting moment\, aggregate independent decision-making\, and stochastic phenomena are especially fascinating and vital to his practice and general existence. He welcomes serendipitous collaborations and treasures long-term partnerships that seek to navigate and explore the constant cycle of remembering-learning-forgetting-reconstructing. \nCarolyn Zaldivar Snow (she/her) is a field recordist and journalist whose work explores the textures of tape\, water\, and place. Her sound installations have been presented in museums and universities\, as well as in more ephemeral settings—abandoned chocolate factories\, geodesic domes\, and overgrown Victorian gardens. Carolyn helps shape conversations around sound\, and contributes to Tape Op magazine\, Mystery Circles’ editorial pages\, and The Tonearm writing about recording\, listening\, and the spaces in between. Dividing her time between Washington D.C. and Philadelphia\, Carolyn co-directs Sound Scene at Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. She recently released on Germany’s I U WE records\, and considers eurorack modular systems her primary instrument. \n  \n\n\nADDITIONAL LOCATION INFO \nFrom October through December 2026\, our Neighborhood Sound Lab will be located in AMLA Studios on the first floor (lower level) of Esperanza Arts Center\, in the Hunting Park neighborhood of North Philadelphia. The street address is 4261 N. 5th Street\, but the entrance is on Bristol Street\, near the corner of 5th and Bristol. Enter through Esperanza’s main doors. \nParking. Free parking is available on the Esperanza campus. The lot is on Bristol Street between North 3rd and North 5th Streets\, at 4th and Bristol. \nPublic transit. Esperanza is on SEPTA bus routes 47\, 53\, and 4. For the 53\, get off at 5th and Hunting Park. For the 47\, get off at 5th and Bristol. For the 4\, get off at 9th and Hunting Park. \nABOUT AMLA \nArtístas y Músicos Latinoamericanos (AMLA) seeks to promote the development\, dissemination\, and understanding of Latin music and culture throughout Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley. AMLA is based at Esperanza Arts Center in Hunting Park\, North Philadelphia. For more info\, visit amla.org.

SUMMARY:Ak'chamel & Ecology : Homestones
DESCRIPTION:Ak’chamel: \nHoned and expanded through their travels\, Ak’chamel’s singular sound comprising desert-scorched psychedelia\, post-apocalyptic shamanism\, and bizarre ritual folk is as unique as the physical theater of their otherworldly live performances. Dug up from the ground\, beamed down from the heavens\, or entirely conjured out of the human imagination\, there’s no sure fire way to know the true origins of Ak’chamel. What we do know is that this trio create a vibe that is uniquely theirs. \nEcology : HomeStones \nNow\, I know this sounds silly\, but Ecology: HomeStones is about carrots. Hopefully this will make that clear for everyone. Beginning in 1778 a competitive gnome named Cheapskate initiated a Campaign of Torment upon 8 very sleepy carrot farmers\, all of whom were coincidentally named Robert. This playful assault fell upon the Roberts in the form of 8 violence based challenges. The winner would be crowned as the Bride of Ouchie. For the rest\, an eternity of unimaginable wickedness. Imagine—a long wet floor of endless tile\, the grout lousy with the Innumerable Crawling Misfortunes of Birthday. No one likes it. Secrets were kept. The true nature and rule structure of the gnome’s competitions were a mystery to everyone but the gnome. Because of this advantage (and the gnome’s four black peppercorn eyes which control the shape and temperature of salt) the gnome\, Cheapskate\, obliterated the Roberts. Now\, at least two years later or maybe three or something\, a different thing is happening and it is tangentially related to that other stuff I said. You need to know this. Didn’t your friends tell you? You see\, there’s something out to get you\, and it’s just as stupid as you are. \nvenue is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Bow and Arrow (Lea Bertucci + Michael Behari) & Angel Meat (Anna Young + Myles Donovan)
DESCRIPTION:Bow and Arrow (Lea Bertucci & Michael Behari): \nBow and Arrow is the newly formed duo project of experimental composer Lea Bertucci (voice\, electronics\, flutes) and virtuoso guitarist Michael Beharie. This project takes cues from the obscure corners of western early music\, flamenco\, folk traditions and contemporary experimental music. Bow and Arrow is devotional music for the age of alienation. \nLea Bertucci is an experimental musician whose works revolve around electronic and spatial extensions of instrument and voice. In addition to her longstanding practice performing with woodwinds\, she has created compositions for strings\, brass\, percussion and other instruments\, often incorporating electronics and multichannel sound. With an ear toward site-responsiveness and acoustics\, her work has expanded toward installation and non-linear presentations of her music\, often staged in hyper-resonant spaces. \nHer discography spans over a decade\, with eight full-length solo albums and a number of collaborative projects. She has released on a number of labels including Astral Spirits\, Room40\, American Dreams and Dinzu Artefacts. In 2018 and 2019\, she released solo albums Metal Aether and Resonant Field on NNA Tapes\, and has since founded her own label\, Cibachrome Editions\, with 2021’s A Visible Length of Light as the inaugural release. Recent collaborations include duos with Lawrence English\, Olivia Block\, Carlos Giffoni and Ben Vida\, among others. \nMichael Beharie is a musician based in New York City. His music sits at the imagined intersection between sound system culture\, pop transmission and free improvisation. \nAngel Meat (Anna Young & Myles Donovan): \nHarsh Thanatology? Post Opera? Or maybe just a Maria Callas tape eating itself alive while drinking cough syrup. Regardless\, Angel Meat is a duo from Philadelphia consisting of vocalist Anna Young (Layer Meat/Hermit High Priestess) and harpist Myles Donovan (Disemballerina/Narco Medusa/A stick and a stone) accompanied by a chaotic pet poltergeist of electro acoustic feedback. Part improv\, part song. Part structure\, part disintegration. Movements of decay\, movements of recovery. Spiritual exorcism\, shaking the bars of its fleshy prison. Authentic Queers and Phony virgins. Rising from the ashes of Antigone. Ultimately\, we’re all just Angel Meat as far as mortality goes\, and we thank you for being here. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom.
