SUMMARY:New Thread Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present the New Thread Quartet performing their program Explorations. The ensemble invites the audience to a reception following the performance. \nNew Thread Quartet presents Explorations\, Vol. 8: Energy Flows\, featuring music by Marilyn Shrude\, Georg Friedrich Haas\, Hannah Kendall\, James Tenney\, and a world premiere by Hong-Da Chin. The quartet’s annual Explorations Series\, now in its 8th iteration\, is dedicated to programming important works of our time. The unifying element that brings these works together is the undulation of sonorities. \nWishing doesn’t make it so was inspired by the same phrase from Stephen King’s Heart of Atlantis. Hong-Da Chin is intrigued by these words\, because they point to how our “minds can run like a child in a world full of winter\,” but it’s not until we take action that our ideas become real and hold meaning. This transfers to the action a composer takes when they engrave the ideas they have in their mind. Chin takes the trill\, a standard technique used for centuries\, to a whole new level. \nenergy flows nervously . . . in search of stillness is seeped in the chromatic motion and harmony typical of Marilyn Shrude’s music. Pulsating\, churning\, and thickly layered\, the intensity waxes to its loudest\, most dissonant sonorities\, finally waning to calmness and silence. \nHannah Kendall’s Gilt was inspired by Hew Locke’s 2022-2023 Facade Commission of the same name\, created for The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Kendall represents Locke’s four shimmering\, golden sculptures with each voice in the quartet. The extreme saturation of sound and layered texture mirrors the meaning and symbolism behind Locke’s piece. \nSaxophonquartett is a spectral motor of microtones\, swelling and rubbing against each other until they explode into wailing overtones. The piece is a masterful display of Georg Friedrich Haas’ ability to take musicians to the edges of their instruments. \nJames Tenney\, American music theorist and composer\, included Swell Piece in his collection entitled Postal Pieces\, short works that could fit on a postcard. Instrumentation is not specified and the instructions are simple. Players swell from nothing to as loud as they can play and return to nothing with as little timbre and intonation shift as possible. The piece demonstrates Tenney’s interest in harmonic perception\, minimal material\, meditation\, among other parameters.

SUMMARY:Makaya McCraven
DESCRIPTION:Makaya McCraven can best be described as a beat scientist. The cutting-edge drummer\, producer\, and sonic collagist is a multi-talented force whose inventive process and intuitive style of performance defy categorization. Called “a sound visionary” (jazzinchicago.org) who is “not your everyday jazz drummer” (thewordisbond.com)\, McCraven brilliantly moves between genres and pushes the boundaries of jazz and rhythm to create forms of his own. French-born but raised in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts by expatriate musician parents\, McCraven went on to develop his chops in Chicago and now represents a rising generation of globally-minded\, genre-bending music makers as an artist as well as band leader. Through his unique\, rarified performances and collaborations he unapologetically affirms our right to re-think and re-write the rules\, any rules\, and affirms other artists in their own exploratory evolutions.

SUMMARY:Camila Niebla Trio
DESCRIPTION:  \nCamila Niebla is a Berlin-based saxophonist\, composer\, improviser\, visual artist\, and curator originally from Buenos Aires\, hailed by Jazz.pt as “an essential saxophonist of our time.” Her multidisciplinary practice forms a powerful constellation of music\, film\, and performance that explores identity\, migration\, and the erasures and hauntings of memory. Through both composition and improvisation\, she constructs emotionally charged sound worlds—such as on her acclaimed solo album una ofrenda a la ausencia (Relative Pitch Records)\, described by The New York City Jazz Record as “innately human and personal.” A dynamic presence in international scenes\, Niebla has collaborated with artists like Marilyn Crispell\, Angelica Sanchez\, Michael Formanek\, and Patrick Shiroishi\, and performed at festivals including Jazz Fest Berlin\, Saalfelden\, Ultima Oslo\, and the Winter Jazz Festival. She is co-founder of the Lilaila record label (with Marta Sanchez and Maria Grand) and an active curator\, leading experimental series such as “Disfigured Rivers” in Berlin and “Guillotina” in Buenos Aires. Her current projects include duos and trios with Downes\, Lisle\, Sanchez\, and Formanek\, as well as her sextet The Hanged One. She is a 2024 and 2025 German Jazz Prize nominee in the Woodwinds category.

SUMMARY:JOE MCPHEE & THE GHOST\, THE HUMANOSITY PROJECT & MADAM DATA/PHILLIP PRICE DUO
DESCRIPTION:Joe McPhee & Michael Foster’s The Ghost: \nJoe McPhee grew up in New York\, is a multi-instrumentalist and plays since the late 60s within the creative and free jazz music world. His play is energetic\, demanding and breathtaking sensitive – still with over 80 years! He learnt to play trumpet as a kid and – inspired by John Coltrane\, Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman – he taught himself saxophone in his thirties. McPhee’s first recording was with Clifford Thornton in 1967 on the album “Freedom and Unity”. He became involved and known in Europe in the mid 70ties and since the 90ties he also plays with a younger generation from Chicago and New York. He played/plays regular for example with Ken Vandermark\, Peter Brötzmann\, Evan Parker\, Mats Gustafsson\, Dominic Duval\, Jay Rosen\, Jeb Bishop\, The Thing\, Clifton Hyde\, Jérôme Bourdellon\, Raymond Boni\, Joe Giardullo. \nMichael Foster’s The Ghost is a trio that celebrates and ruthlessly probes the free jazz tradition’s queer feelings\, drawing inspiration from noise\, reductionism\, and the leather culture to unpack the masculinist aesthetics of musical catharsis. The Ghost is Michael Foster (tenor/soprano saxophones\, samples\, compositions)\, John Moran (bass)\, Joey Sullivan (drums). \nThe Humanosity Project: \nThe Humanosity Project is a quartet of four monster improvisors operating in the extreme regions of Jazz. They first got together under a tree by a river in Philadelphia and have since performed in NYC\, Baltimore and Washington DC. \nMatt Lavelle is a flugelhorn\, bass and alto clarinet player\, and composer now based in Philadelphia. He began his music career with Hildred Humphries\, a swing era veteran who played with Count Basie and Billie Holiday. He has played in ensembles led by Sabir Mateen since 2002. In 2005\, Lavelle began study with Ornette Coleman. Lavelle was a member of the Bern Nix quartet from 2010-2017. In 2011 Lavelle created the 12 Houses Orchestra. Lavelle has played and collaborated with Ornette Coleman\, William Parker\, Warren Smith\, Henry Grimes\, Eric Mingus\, Sabir Mateen\, Roy Campbell\, Daniel Carter\, Jemeel Moondoc\, Mat Maneri\, Ras Moshe\, Hilliard Greene\, Steve Swell\, Matana Roberts\, Bern Nix\, Jack DeSalvo\, Charles Downs\, Tom Cabrera\, Francois Grillot\, Giuseppi Logan\, William Hooker and many others. Lavelle published his first book\, New York City Subway Drama and Beyond\, in 2011. In 2013 he published a second book called The Jazz Musician’s Tarot Deck. Lavelle is also the author of the blog No Sound Left Behind. \nDave Ross (guitar) is the recipient of a Boston Music award and has performed at Lincoln Center\, Vision festival and The Kennedy Center. He has recorded and performed extensively as a leader and side man with Henry Grimes\, Marshall Allen\, William Parker\, William Hooker\, Ras Moshe\, Charles Downs\, Larry Roland\, Sabir Mateen\, Jason Hwang\, Albey Balgochian\, and many others. \nJulius Masri is a Philadelphia based multi instrumentalist\, and performer/composer for the city’s dance community at large. His music focuses on improvisatory methods and syncretic / linguistic exchanges within various musical languages including Jazz\, Metal\, AfroCuban\, Experimental Noise\, and Arabic music. Born in Tripoli\, Lebanon\, he moved to the States in 1990 and picked up drumming a year later. He studied with Philadelphia instructors Carl Mottola\, Elaine Hoffman-Watts\, and as an undergraduate at Bard College\, with AACM’s Thurman Barker\, Richard Teitelbaum\, and Joan Tower. Julius plays drums\, circuit modified Casio keyboards\, Oud\, Kamancheh (aka Rabab\, Spike Fiddle)\, and various other instruments. He currently performs in groups such as grind/crust metal bands Night Raids\, Nomad War Machine\, free jazz groups Bruxer\, Spectral Forces\, Humanosity Project\, Dromedaries\, trombone and synth duo Superlith\, and more. He has performed with Henry Grimes\, Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, Bobby Zankel\, Thurman Barker\, Jaap Blonk\, Randi Potoppidan\, members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. \nPete Dennis (they/he) is a musician\, improviser\, composer\, visual artist\, and teacher. Living in West Philadelphia\, Dennis is inspired by their beautiful community and the future. Other ever present inspirations include William Parker\, the works of Octavia E. Butler\, their partner Abigail\, and the knowledge that all vibrations carry the potential to transmit the truths of life and death. Dennis’s recorded creations are released using the project name Search for the Infinite Light and include but are not limited to Killing a Dixie Hummingbird (2019)\, World’s End Welcoming Committee (2021)\, and pastē (2022). Their most current projects and collaborations include 99 Futures\, Oarsman\, Mitamu\, St. John’s Wort\, and an ongoing poetry/bass duet performance with Abigail Swoboda. They believe that sound is the foundation of healing and would like to acknowledge all master improvisers of the past\,present\, and future. \nmadam data & Phillip Price duo: \nmadam data is an audio repair technician based in Singapore\, work that is always a struggle. In other parallel histories they are a musician living across the subjectivity-obliterating assault of noise\, the transcendent structuralism of jazz\, and the ceaseless insurgency of punk. This music is also a struggle. They have sought distance from any other artistic practice\, but are keen to show up\, in some fragmented way\, in moving realities\, cosmic realities\, realities broken and repaired. They will be performing in a duo with Philadelphia based drummer Phillip Price. \naccessibility: ramp into lobby\, then 7 stairs into theater

SUMMARY:Imal Gnawa at MAAS
DESCRIPTION:Imal Gnawa stands at the intersection of traditions rooted in the deep spiritual and rhythmic legacy of Moroccan Gnawa music and bold futurism. Imal Gnawa seeks to weave together ritualistic trance acoustic elements with futuristic aesthetics\, creating a soundscape that is as timeless as it is avant-garde. \nAt the core of this music lies an intricate fusion\, where the talents of Eilon Elikam\, Andrew Fox and Atlas Phoenix weave together the organic warmth of acoustic instruments with the realms of electronic sounds. Together\, they create a dialogue between the ancient and the modern\, a conversation that pays tribute to the past while daring to push its boundaries forward. In their hands\, music becomes not just an art form\, but a living force—one that bridges cultures\, transforms hearts\, and affirms the universal power of sound to connect and heal. \nTheir debut E.P\, Twilight Prophecy\, serves as a manifesto of this vision. It captures the hypnotic groove and spiritual depth of Gnawa music\, electronic textures\, and a fearless approach to experimentation. The album’s compositions move between meditative trance states and electrifying swellings\, inviting listeners into a ceremonial space that transcends time and place. Imal Gnawa is a living experiment\, a celebration of cultural exchange\, and a commitment to the transformative power of music. \naccessibility: space is on the second floor up a flight of stairs. \nThis event supported by a sponsorship grant from the Penn Treaty Special Services District

SUMMARY:Earth Tongues and Dan Blacksberg/Carlos Santiago/Sonali Singh trio
DESCRIPTION:Earth Tongues: \nAn ensemble dedicated to exploring the scope and scale of experimental improvised music\, Earth Tongues approaches each performance as a chance to build new\, challenging work that take silence and ambient sound into full account. Consisting of Carlo Costa on percussion\, Joe Moffett on trumpet\, and Dan Peck on tuba\, the trio creates immersive pieces that weave through a Venn diagram of music\, noise\, and quiet. \n“Ohio\, Earth Tongues’ second release on Neither/Nor Records\, is their most ambitious work to date. A long-form piece that stretches the very fabric of improvised music to the limit\, Ohio envelopes the listener with intensely quiet textures\, glacial build-ups and surprising\, thunderous moments of noise. It is a double-album inspired by the sonic extremes found in the natural and industrial worlds\, and an ode to the inescapably human desire to come to terms with those worlds.”-Peter Margasak/Bandcamp \nDan Blacksberg\, Carlos Santiago & Sonali Singh trio: \nDescribed by Bandcamp Daily as “a maestro who effortlessly hops between—and\, ultimately\, deconstructs—genres with abandon\,” Dan’s musical vision has led him to compose music with a wide reach. From writing danceable klezmer melodies on his album Radiant Others – the first klezmer album to feature the trombone as the lead instrument – to the free-jazz of the Dan Blacksberg Trio\, to genre-busting projects like his Hasidic doom metal band Deveykus and 2017 suite Together in Struggle\, Dan forges music with a voice that “aims to infuse the fearless avant-garde with timeless sounds and techniques\, and vice versa.” (WXPN’s The Key). \nCarlos Santiago was born and raised in Philadelphia and was educated at The Hartt School of Music and Temple University. Approaching music from multiple standpoints\, Carlos has relished performing in a wide variety of musical settings and styles such as the multi – disciplinary Bismuth String Quartet\, the complex mathematical compositions of the rock band Normal Love\, soloing with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia\, playing Tango\, Salsa\, and Afro-Caribbean jazz with Sonic Liberation Front\, or Roma jazz with BeauDjango. Past teachers include John Blake\, Diane Monroe\, Yusef Lateef\, Adolf Sandole\, Louis Lanza\, and Nicholas Mann. Sharing the unity of all of these types of music is the driving force behind his passion for sonic exploration. \nFrom busking on Broad street to drumming in a darkened cemetery\, Sonali lets themselves be swept into the madness and passion of Philadelphia’s creative and improvisation scene with handsome bassoon sidekick in tow. They ache to soothe hurt souls\, much like theirs\, on this shared journey. Through foundations of music therapy and the power of improvisation\, Sonali hopes to foster a sense of community\, nurturing and .. aaand.. aaand you get it. Make music with me. Make joy with me. Make space for grief\, anger\, loss\, and pain with me. Or let’s scream for no reason! \nvenue is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:DARLING DAMSELFLY\, METAZOANS & THE GREAT CACKLER-BENEFIT FOR GAZA SOUP KITCHEN
DESCRIPTION:A benefit for Gaza Soup Kitchen. \nAbout Gaza Soup Kitchen \nChef Mahmoud\, who always ended his videos by thanking his friends in the United States and signing off with the Arabic word “Mostamreen” (مستمرين) 💪\, meaning “we will continue\,” left a legacy of resilience and hope. His spirit lives on through our family and friends who now manage the different locations for us across North and South Gaza. \nDarling Damselfly: \n“Darling Damselfly\, a Philadelphia-based band\, wants their most recent album\, “Galapagos\,” to get listeners thinking about humankind’s relationship with the planet — in the hopes of saving it. \nSammy Shuster (singer/songwriter) and Lexie Diallo — the two-person band’s violist — released “Galapagos” in October. The five-track album\, which is available on Bandcamp\, explores scientific phenomena from evolution to photosynthesis while prompting listeners to make connections to their own lives.” – Jenny Roberts:Grid Magazine \nMetazoans: \nWhat does it feel like to be an animal? If the experience of being could be put into words for a certain species\, how would that sound? What stories could be told about our precarious moment in natural history? Metazoa is a collection of songs inspired by the science of life\, evolution\, and animal consciousness. Throughout the album a variety of perspectives are presented: a praying mantis embracing her lover to death\, a whale on a sacred journey\, the last Pinta Island Galapagos tortoise personally coming to terms with extinction\, and a menagerie of prehistoric fauna in our scientific Garden of Eden\, “Pleistocene Paradise”. Full arrangements reflect an eclectic range of influences such as Brazilian guitar\, jazz\, rock\, and world rhythms. \nThe Great Cackler: \nJustin Duerr (Northern Liberties\, Hex Nine\, et al) and Mandy Slipoj Katz (Invasive Species\, Beware The Blunted Needle\, Vulgar Remedies\, etc) join together as The Great Cackler (fka Geb The Great Cackler)\, an acoustic duo drawing upon their shared experiences of over a decade\, personally\, creatively\, and both as one. \nUnable to attend? Please consider making a donation!

SUMMARY:VICTOR VIEIRA-BRANCO'S BARK CULTURE
DESCRIPTION:Ars Nova Workshop is thrilled to present Philadelphia-based trio led by vibraphonist Victor Vieira-Branco\, Bark Culture at Solar Myth on Thursday\, August 21\, 2025. \n“Philly-based\, and with roots in the São Paulo experimental music scene\, vibraphonist Victor Vieira-Branco—along with bassist John Moran and drummer Joey Sullivan—serve up melodically rich music that feels like it’s in a perpetual state of agitation. Pretty sounds are incubated in an active environment\, where motion is the evolutionary force shaping events—but always with a sense of the trio aiming for a spot on the horizon.” -Bandcamp \nBark Culture is a Philadelphia-based trio led by vibraphonist Victor Vieira-Branco\, featuring Joey Sullivan on drums and John Moran on bass.
