SUMMARY:The Bad Plus
DESCRIPTION:The Bad Plus are the ultimate originals – a democratic unit with a clear vision and a refusal to conform to convention. For over two decades they have played with spirit and adventure\, made their own rules and done so with a bold sense of creativity and intent. Avoiding easy categorization\, The Bad Plus has won critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide with their unique sound and flair for live performance. The Bad Plus continues to push boundaries as founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) embark on a new piano-less incarnation of the band with Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (tenor saxophone) – instigating a new wave of excitement and anticipation within the band that is re-energizing their sound and inspiration. The title of their second album in that configuration\, Complex Emotions\, comes from a phrase that Anderson and King have used since the early days of the band – a mission statement to describe the wide range of territory they’ve always explored. Just as calling its predecessor The Bad Plus made a statement about continuity in the midst of change\, finally branding an album with this long-held mantra declares that the reconfigured group has discovered ways to delve deeper and venture further.

SUMMARY:Beehive Cathedral Joseph Decosimo\, Luke Richardson\, and Cleek Schrey
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present American traditional music trio Joseph Decosimo\, Luke Richardson\, and Cleek Schrey performing music from their recent album Beehive Cathedral. \nJoseph Decosimo\, Luke Richardson\, and Cleek Schrey\, three of the most compelling musicians in the American traditional music scene\, explore traditional repertoires from Appalachia and the broader South\, gleaned from visits with older players\, field recordings\, vintage 78s\, and archival tune collections. Working with fiddle\, hardanger d’amore (a fiddle with sympathetic strings)\, banjos\, and a 19th-century pump organ\, the trio conveys both the sonic details of their instruments and a generous musical interplay rooted in a dozen years of collaboration. Their 2024 debut album Beehive Cathedral\, released on Dear Life Records\, presents resonant\, thoughtful\, and expansive explorations of Appalachian and American music. Irish fiddle luminary\, Martin Hayes\, declares it “a hypnotic recording that is grounded\, subtle and refined.” The trio departs from the string band format that has defined the genre\, especially since the Old-time music revival of the 1970s made guitar\, bass\, and chordal accompaniment features of the music. Untethering the music from chord patterns and guitars\, they reimagine older approaches to the music filled with tonal ambiguity\, drone\, and dissonance. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nThe members of the trio are veteran performers in the Old-time scene\, where they’ve worked with renowned string bands The Bucking Mules and Bigfoot. Beehive Cathedral draws on the group’s experiences making music together at Southern fiddlers’ conventions\, in the back of NYC pubs\, on stages\, and in their homes. It also sources energy from their broader musical lives\, including Schrey’s participation in NYC’s experimental sound community and Decosimo’s collaborations with Durham\, NC projects Wye Oak\, Hiss Golden Messenger\, and Jake Xerxes Fussell.

SUMMARY:Patrick Shiroishi: Forgetting is Violent Tour
DESCRIPTION:Forgetting is Violent\, Patrick Shiroishi’s latest solo LP\, is his most immediate release yet\, expanding the scope not just of his music but of his extramusical considerations. Where his past releases on American Dreams reckoned with racism against Japanese Americans or presented Shiroishi’s saxophone as heard in a parking garage\, Forgetting is Violent considers racism as a whole\, historical and ongoing\, with the urgency it deserves. Here\, for the first time\, we hear Shiroishi joined by a supporting cast that reads like a who’s-who of heavy music: Aaron Turner (SUMAC\, ISIS)\, Gemma Thompson (Savages)\, Faith Coloccia (Mamiffer)\, otay::onii (Elizabeth Colour Wheel)\, and Mat Ball (BIG|BRAVE). The constant\, as ever\, is Shiroishi’s patient\, probing musicality\, marrying heaviness and lightness\, acceptance and defiance\, both packing a punch and welcoming new listeners into the fold. \nThis concert is presented with R5 Productions.

SUMMARY:Ak’chamel\, The Giver of Illness + Julius Masri (Mephisto Halabi set) & Derek Monypeny
DESCRIPTION:Ak’chamel\, The Giver of Illness is an enigmatic trio from a border state. Fourth World Post-Colonial Cultural Cannibalists Circumcising The Foreskin of Enlightenment.Performing in homemade costumes and masks\, they have played festivals in various cities around the U.S gaining international attention from Vice\, The Wire\, Tiny Mix Tapes\, Consequence of Sound\, and many more. \nThey have been known by many names: Ak’chamel The Giver of Illness\, The Bandylegged Riders of the Ill-Promised Sun\, The Crazed and Sunchalked Bones of the Vanished Herds etc… Honed and expanded through their travels\, Ak’chamel’s singular sound comprising desert-scorched psychedelia\, post-apocalyptic shamanism\, and bizarre ritual folk is as unique as the physical theater of their otherworldly live performances. \nPerforming in homespun costumes and masks\, with self-made instruments\, they have played festivals in various cities around the U.S gaining international attention from Vice\, The Wire\, Tiny Mix Tapes\, Consequence of Sound\, and many more. They have amassed over 10 cassette albums and 1 VHS full length film\, but their music reached a wider audience through two excellent LPs released on the french label Akuphone: “The Totemist” (2020) – which was recorded in a ghost town in Chihuahuan desert in far West Texas – and “A Mournful Kingdom of Sand” (2023) which – according to the band – is “a perfect soundtrack for the desertification of our world”. Their third album\, “Rawskulled”\,was released in 2024. \nJulius Masri (Mephisto Halabi set): \nJulius Masri is a Philadelphia based multi instrumentalist\, and performer/composer for the city’s dance community at large. His music focuses on improvisatory methods and syncretic / linguistic exchanges within various musical languages including Jazz\, Metal\, AfroCuban\, Experimental Noise\, and Arabic music. Born in Tripoli\, Lebanon\, he moved to the States in 1990 and picked up drumming a year later. He studied with Philadelphia instructors Carl Mottola\, Elaine Hoffman-Watts\, and as an undergraduate at Bard College\, with AACM’s Thurman Barker\, Richard Teitelbaum\, and Joan Tower. Julius plays drums\, circuit modified Casio keyboards\, Oud\, Kamancheh (aka Rabab\, Spike Fiddle)\, and various other instruments. He currently performs in groups such as grind/crust metal band Night Raids\, free jazz groups Sirius Juju and Dromedaries\, trombone and synth duo Superlith\, and more. He has performed with Henry Grimes\, Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, Thurman Barker and members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Julius is a recipient of a 2022 Yaddo Fellowship for composition\, the 2022 university of the arts creative research and innovation grant\, and project funding via pew center for arts & heritage\, as well as Swarthmore college and the Andrew W. Mellon foundation. \nDerek Monypeny: \nBorn in the Arizona desert\, a veteran of multiple explorations into the Sahara desert via Morocco and Western Sahara\, and now a resident of the Mojave\, Derek Monypeny sees his musical mission as adding to and expanding on what he calls the “desert continuum;” the psychedelic sirocco swirl of desert-based stringed instruments played with utter abandon by musicians the world over. \nThe entrance on the 48th Street side of building is wheelchair accessible via a street-level lift. Please contact us in advance for assistance.

SUMMARY:DJ Spooky and Michael Sakamoto
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in butoh\, hip-hop\, new music\, and immersive media\, these interwoven pieces explore cultural memory\, resistance\, and ecological urgency through richly layered sound\, movement\, and image. With inspiration drawn from the legacy of the late composer and activist Ryuichi Sakamoto\, the program moves across geographies and histories to offer a striking reflection on our collective present. \nThe evening includes Beautiful Blue Sky\, a duet between Sakamoto and guest artist Mohammed “Barges” Smahneh that blends autobiographical dance theater with hip-hop and Palestinian folk traditions; asymm\, Sakamoto’s solo exploration of identity\, borders\, and belonging; and Gods and Monsters\, Miller’s music- and media-driven performance combining electronic\, classical\, and hip-hop elements with visuals and dance. Together\, these excerpts create an urgent\, poetic experience that dissolves boundaries between disciplines while imagining new ways of being in a fractured world. \n

SUMMARY:Jack Wright/Ben Wright \, Henry Allen/Jonah Gelbart\, Lance Simmons
DESCRIPTION:Henry Allen/Jonah Gelbart – guitar and trumpet \nPhiladelphia based musicians Henry Allen and Jonah Gelbart have been playing freely improvised music as a duo for the last several years. Henry Allen is a guitarist whose playing incorporates experimental punk ideas with rapidly evolving and abrasive harmonic textures. Jonah Gelbart plays various trumpets and shofar\, combining his training in classical and jazz with a personal experimental language. They prefer a playful approach to music-making that emphasizes social interaction over directly aesthetical considerations. \n  \nLance Simmons – percussion \nLance Howard Simmons is a self-taught percussionist and multi-disciplinary artist from the North American South residing in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. His other notable musical endeavors include The Playful Bunch\, Slack\, Mirror Men\, and Unguent.”  https://refulgentsepulchre.bandcamp.com/album/fractal-discharge \n  \nJack Wright/Ben Wright – bass and alto saxophone \nJack Wright is a veteran saxophone improviser based mainly in Philadelphia\, regularly touring North America and Europe the past four decades and well known to improvisers. Continually seeking out interesting partners and playing situations\, Wright is one of the originals of American free improv\, and now at 81 he is still the “Johnny Appleseed of Free Improvisation\,” as the late Davey Williams (guitarist) called him in the 80s. \n  \nBen Wright from Dixon\, New Mexico plays double bass. He cut his teeth in Philadelphia punk rock\, and has since been working the double bass for 30 odd years\, bolstered by intense spats of incidental formal training. A lover of the lowest frequencies\, Ben has explored many disparate forms of music through the bass\, yet always returns to the wellspring of improvisation.

What began as a series of one-off performances pairing her hypnotic fingerpicked guitar patterns and fragile vocals with a rotating roster of impressive collaborators\, has evolved with the regular accompaniment of Jon Leidecker (Wobbly / Negativland / Thurston Moore Group) live processing the moment. Each conjured performance is raw\, distinct and unrepeatable. In their live act\, Sharrock’s vocals vacillate between delicate\, seductive\, humorous and disturbed\, offering moments of profound beauty and catharsis within joy and deep discomfort. Together\, they continue to push the boundaries of what it means to connect through music\, creating spaces where composition and experimental sound converge. Their sophomore album\, Songs We No Longer Sing\, is set to release later this year. \nHenbane: \nHenbane was formed in the summer of 2023 by Kohoutek percussionist Scott Verrastro and bassist Griffin Vernor Drutchas based on the framework of 1968-1970 Fairport Convention\, covering a repertoire of traditional British Isles folk ballads\, lyrical gems from ’60s and ’70s songwriters\, and original compositions.

SUMMARY:CHRIS WILLIAMS & APOLOGIST
DESCRIPTION:Chris Williams: \nChris Williams is an interdisciplinary artist and musician based in Brooklyn\, NY and is most at home collaborating with contemporary improvisers and experimentalists. He has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe. His work explores the dyad of ancestral trauma and power existing in all Black Americans. Williams has been commissioned by WasteLAnd and International Contemporary Ensemble and has been in residence or with BANFF Centre for the Arts\, Foundation of Contemporary Arts\, Atlantic Center for the Arts\, Musik Installationen Nürnberg and others. He has collaborated with creators including Eyvind Kang\, Joanna Mattrey\, Miriam Parker\, Patrick Shiroishi\, Bennie Maupin\, Nicole Mitchell\, Fay Victor\, Wendy Eisenberg\, Luke Stewart\, Pink Siifu\, and Marjani Forte-Saunders. He is a member of History Dog\, HxH and other experimental ensembles. \nApologist: \nApologist is Rose Actor-Engle\, a native Philadelphian making music with synthesizers and field recordings. “Apologist exists as a strong presence\, but with a whole different demeanor. The strength exists like a knot in your throat\, wrenching your insides and keeping you from speaking. It’s more like an ugly-crying sorry than it is a hole punched in drywall. There is an odd comfort in bawling ones eyes out to the point of feeling physical pain that is so much stronger than the stupidity of physical anger and damage. It’s beautiful and it’s hurt\, like walking out on to your steps barefoot to see a first snow. You know it’s cold\, but you are willing to face the consequences.”- David Coccagna \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.

SUMMARY:Upstairs at Abbyssinia: Kari Watson\, Sam Wenc\, Misses\, Jason Calhoun
DESCRIPTION:SAVE THE DATE🔸WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 15\, 8PM!@upstairsabyss solo sets by Kari Watson\, Sam Wenc\, Misses & Jason Calhoun. Philly friends get to this gig! \n~About the artists~\nMisses (Maya Weber) is a venture in resonance\, picking up the lever harp to converse with God’s cantus firmus\, reaching towards polyphony. Misses is a practice of receiving grace. \n‘The hallmark of jason calhoun’s music—either under his given name or under the naps alias—is an emotional resonance that allows fragility and perseverance to occupy the same space. Though humble in his approach\, calhoun has done something quietly extraordinary in building a body of work that\, unlike so much music that seeks to transport you elsewhere\, instead asks you to check in with yourself.’ \nSam Wenc is a composer\, improviser\, and interdisciplinary artist working with sound\, text\, performance and installation. He has released music on Longform Editions\, Where to Now\, Moone Records\, Noumenal Loom\, Sweet Wreath\, and Obsolete Staircases\, amongst others. His work has been supported by Elektronmusikstudion (Stockholm\, Sweden)\, Art OMI (Ghent\, NY)\, Foundation for Contemporary Arts and has performed throughout the US\, Canada\, Peru\, and Japan. \nKari Watson (they/them) is a composer\, performer\, and intermedia artist whose work explores the intersections of contemporary concert music\, electroacoustic composition\, live performance\, and interactive installation. Their composition practice is cross-disciplinary and deeply collaborative\, often involving workshop-driven processes that prioritize collective exploration and exchange. As a performer playing analog synthesizers\, they engage a customizable spatialization software built in MaxMSP with spatial speaker arrays to further explore issues of tactility and drama in immersive sonic environments. \nPhilly friends come on out it’s gonna be a great show💥

SUMMARY:Katalyst Conversation AACM 60th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Katalyst Conversation is a powerful new ensemble rooted in the visionary spirit of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM)\, uniting four singular voices in exploratory jazz: saxophonists Ari Brown and Ed Wilkerson\, percussionist Vincent Davis\, and marimbist Preyas Roy. Steeped in the legacy of Chicago’s avant-garde\, the group weaves a dynamic tapestry of improvisation and structure—Brown’s tenure with Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner linking him directly to the lineage of John Coltrane\, while Wilkerson\, a founding member of 8 Bold Souls\, brings decades of compositional brilliance shaped by AACM’s ethos. Davis and Roy add deep rhythmic fluency and shimmering textural nuance\, rounding out a quartet that is as searching as it is grounded. Following their performance at London’s Soul on Ice Festival\, the ensemble’s fierce synergy is captured on their new album\, The Katalyst Conversation: Live in Brussels\, out this March.
