SUMMARY:Peter Evans Being & Becoming
DESCRIPTION:For 20 years NYC-based\, trumpeter\, composer\, bandleader and educator Peter Evans has been pushing the boundaries of creative music in formats as divergent as solo trumpet improvisation\, symphony orchestras\, jazz ensembles\, noise/electronic music\, and through-composed works. He’s been the recipient of awards and commissions worldwide including the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in 2022. Evans has worked with some of the leading figures in contemporary music\, including John Zorn\, Pauline Oliveros\, Brian Ferneyhough\, George Lewis\, Anthony Braxton\, Mary Halvorson\, Craig Taborn\, Ambrose Akinmusere\, Weasel Walter\, Dave Liebman\, Ingrid Laubrock\, and Jeff “Tain” Watts; and works with both the International Contemporary and Wet Ink Ensembles as a performer and composer. \nHis quartet Being & Becoming features some of the leading lights from the next generation of creative musicians – vibraphonist Joel Ross and bassist Nick Jozwiak – and is now joined by the tirelessly inventive drummer/composer Tyshawn Sorey\, a Pulitzer Prize winner whose collaborators include Vijay Iyer\, Roscoe Mitchell\, John Zorn\, Bill Frisell\, Jason Moran and Steve Lehman. Evans’ compositions for the band shift seamlessly between notated chamber music textures\, free improvisations\, deep grooves and telepathic ensemble playing.

SUMMARY:Blackbox Ensemble: Contemporary Chamber Music
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present the Blackbox Ensemble performing contemporary chamber works by Annie Nikunen\, Ileana Perez-Velazquez\, Baldwin Giang\, Tania Leon\, and James Diaz at University Lutheran Church. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nThe BlackBox Ensemble is a collective of contemporary music performers based in New York City dedicated to exploring the wide-ranging world of the music of our time. Founded in 2018\, our upcoming 2024-2025 season includes concerts at home in New York and around the country\, including the season-opening performance of the Southern Exposure Series at the University of South Carolina\, a performance at the Timucua Arts Foundation\, and residencies at the University of Chicago\, University of Florida\, and University of Central Florida. Our 2023-2024 season included major performances in New York City and beyond\, including touring engagements in Washington\, DC\, Florida\, Michigan\, and throughout the Northeast. Our season began with The Sound of Space Between Us\, a site-specific\, outdoor music and dance performance at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown\, Massachusetts. We then presented the live premiere of Borrowed Landscape\, a radio play by German playwright duo tauchgold with music by Dai Fujikura\, at the Noguchi Museum\, in a program that also features music by Anna Thorvaldsdottir\, inti figgis-vizueta\, and Toru Takemistu. We then reprised our performance of Borrowed Landscape at the Smithsonian Institute of Asian Art as part of a two-concert series. In addition\, we celebrated our 5-year anniversary with our inaugural BlackBox Festival\, including our debut at Roulette Intermedium. Finally\, our season included residencies at University of Florida\, University of Michigan\, NYU\, and the Kaufman Music Center’s Special Music School. \nOur 2022-2023 season included a season-opening performance marathon on Pier 45 in Manhattan\, a portrait concert of Jessie Cox\, and performances at Culture Lab LIC and the Columbia University Sacred Music Series. Throughout the season\, the ensemble was supported by the Chamber Music America’s Ensemble Forward grant for emerging ensembles\, through which they received coaching and mentorship from Alan Pierson\, Conductor and Co-Artistic Director of Alarm Will Sound. Past projects include world premieres by Paul Novak (for the 2021 New Music Gathering Conference)\, Annie Nikunen\, Erich Barganier\, and composer-vocalist Tanner Porter; Gallery of Sound” a performance of solo pieces performed in isolated rooms at an underground bar and record store in Midtown Manhattan; a performance of Julius Eastman’s “Femenine” on the Brooklyn waterfront; and “Elegy\,” a video concert featuring music by Juhi Bansal\, Carlos Simon\, Yaz Lancaster\, Brittany J. Green\, and Jessica Mays. Reviewing this program\, I Care If You Listen wrote” “the 45-minute chamber music program showcased five worthy contemporary composers\, with earnest performances that did justice to the extramusical connotations.” \nOur name\, BlackBox\, is inspired by this term’s meaning in other fields. In theatre\, a Black Box is a type of performance space – usually a square room with black walls – that offers flexible staging and seating arrangements\, creating an environment ripe for creative experimentation and intimate human connection. Meanwhile\, in science\, computing\, and the humanities\, a “black box” is a system with defined inputs and outputs whose inner workings are unknown. We believe that music\, as a cultural medium\, fills the role of the black box\, enacting an ambiguous but vital relationship between artistic expression and social life. In doing so\, we follow the inspiration of the theatrical definition – to foster experimentation\, innovation\, and human connection. In all of our programs\, we aim to present contemporary classical music in a format that is approachable\, innovative\, and impactful.

SUMMARY:Sova
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to present Sova in a solo set at University Lutheran Church. \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST \n“Ghostly\, delicate\, elegant…” (Independent Clauses) \nFor Sova – the stage name of New York-based pianist/composer Sophia Subbayya Vastek – the piano has always been home. A second generation pianist\, she holds a deep reverence for her collective history\, coupled with an exploratory ear\, and moves quietly between musical worlds. Over the years\, her intuitive playing style — rooted in tenderness\, improvisation\, and classical training — has evolved into a dynamic\, cinematic sound. \nDescribed as performing with “passion and profound tenderness” (Second Inversion) and “serene strokes and lyrical beauty” (Brooklyn Rail)\, her music is quietly devastating\, blossoming into ambient-inspired soundscapes that range from whisper-soft echoes to expressive cascades. \nHer most recent LP\, In Our Softening\, produced by Sam Torres (Polymouth Music)\, features nine of her own beguiling piano compositions\, each track a part of a thoughtfully woven tapestry. Recorded entirely on an upright piano built in 1902 – complete with a giant crack in the soundboard – the album draws listeners in with its vulnerable and vibrant intimacy. Exploring themes of loss\, rebirth\, and finding softness within an increasingly hard world\, the album has been called “a tender and revelatory balm” by editors at I Care If You Listen\, “heaven on earth” (Sun 13)\, and “one of the very best things I’ve heard all year” by longtime music journalist Steve Smith (Night After Night). The record also made it onto Bandcamp’s All-Time Best Selling Solo Piano list. \nHer music has been released on OPIA\, the record label founded by Ólafur Arnalds\, Innova Recordings\, and more. Her debut album\, Histories (2017)\, was produced by Grammy-winning engineer Adam Abeshouse\, and described as “a beautiful mosaic of the larger cultural intersections of our world” (Second Inversion). She has also released an EP of the complete solo piano works by composer Lili Boulanger (1893-1918)\, entitled Lili (2020\, reissued 2023). \nEqually important to the music itself are the spaces in which Sova’s music exists. Whether she is performing or presenting\, she is dedicated to creating musical experiences that are grounded in care and intentional gathering. In that spirit\, she is a co-curator of the popular Lift Series at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall\, which finished its sold-out fifth season. She also hosts concerts in her home – a converted church-space in Troy\, NY called Troy Listening Room – that highlight risk-taking\, independent musicians. \nIn 2022\, Sova was recognized as a composer by the New York State Council on the Arts and New York Foundation For the Arts (NYSCA/NYFA) as a Music/Sound Fellow\, a statewide program focused on the evolution of contemporary art. Her music has been featured on NPR\, BBC\, and KEXP\, and she has performed across three continents.

SUMMARY:Brandon Lopez/Chuck Roth/Dennis Sullivan Trio & Erica Dicker/Aaron Pond duo
DESCRIPTION:Co-Presented with People’s Music Supply. \nBrandon Lopez/Chuck Roth/Dennis Sullivan Trio: \nBrandon López is a New York-based composer and bassist working at the fringes of jazz\, free improvisation\, noise and new music. His music has been praised as “brutal” (Chicago Reader) and “relentless” (The New York Times). From the New York Philharmonic’s David Geffen Hall to the DIY basements of Brooklyn\, Lopez has worked beside many luminaries of jazz\, classical\, poetry\, and experimental music. Lopez was awarded the 2018 Artist-in-Residence at ISSUE Project Room and 2018 Van Lier Fellow at Roulette Intermedium and 2020 Jerome Residency Roulette. He was a featured soloist with the New York Philharmonic in Ashley Fure’s “Filament” and a number of works with John Zorn\, including Zorn’s 35th anniversary of “Cobra.” He’s had the pleasure of working regularly with Nate Wooley\, William Parker\, Paul Lytton\, Jooklo Duo\, Leila Bordreuil\, Mette Rasmussen\, Justice Yeldham\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Peter Evans\, Ingrid Laubrock\, Tom Rainey\, Gerald Cleaver\, Man Forever\, Joe Morris and many others. He currently leads his own ensemble\, The Mess with Chris Corsano and Sam Yulsman\, and works extensively as a soloist. \n“The palette of sounds Chuck Roth achieves with the guitar is moving. Not even a volume pedal\, just two hands and six strings. I enjoy being hit by brief and unexpected melodies and then taken back to completely abstract landscapes. I love hearing a Stratocaster in this context; it isn’t its usual place\, its sound is so unique\, and it adds an extra beauty to it all. The music is raw and fresh; I can hear how Chuck is working to make it happen\, which makes me feel part of what is being developed. It can be aggressive at times and is definitely powerful. Rhythmic motives are set and shot down fearlessly. It keeps you there\, engaged\, wanting to see where the next turn takes you. It is such an enjoyable ride!”- Luciana Bass \nBased in New York City\, Dennis K. Sullivan II is a percussionist\, composer\, and electronicist\, focusing on new and contemporary music. His music has been performed across the globe by the International Contemporary Ensemble\, yarn/wire\, New Thread Quartet\, DECODER\, Ensemble Adapter\, Hypercube\, and Dal Niente in venues such as the Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg)\, The Stone (NYC)\, Nymusikk Bergen (Norway)\, Omaha Under the Radar\, Splendor (Amsterdam)\, and the Edmonton Fringe Festival (Canada). He is a founding member and core performer in Radical 2\, a classification-defying duo that explores the use of theatric\, vocal\, percussive\, and prototype electronic mediums\, and Popebama\, an experimental duo that applies text\, electronics\, and high-energy performances to non-traditional sounds. In the world of improvisation\, he has shared the stage with luminaries such as Brandon Lopez\, Erin Rogers\, Peter Evans\, Tom Rainey and Dana Jessen. An advocate for the new music community\, Sullivan successfully curated an annual series of theatrically driven new music\, bringing together classical music\, theater\, rock\, heavy metal\, and film at Jack (Brooklyn) from 2015-17. \nErica Dicker & Aaron Pond Duo: \nViolinist Erica Dicker works in a wide variety of musical settings\, bridging the realms of notated and improvised music. Erica lends her creative voice to the Brandon Seabrook String Society\, Blood Luxury\, and her electro-acoustic trio Vaster Than Empires. Taking Auspices (Tubapede Records)\, her “knockout solo debut\,” [Bandcamp Daily] features her own solo compositions for violin that explore extended techniques and alternate tunings\, yielding music both familiar and strange. Erica is a founding member of the horn-trio Kylwyria. With hornist John Gattis and pianist Mabel Kwan\, Kylwyria commissions adventurous chamber music for this unique instrumentation\, enabling luminaries such as Eric Wubbels and Katherine Young to make invaluable contributions to the repertoire. \nErica is\, perhaps\, best known for her work with composer and multi-instrumentalist Anthony Braxton as a performer and collaborator as well as an educational ambassador for Braxton’s non-profit Tri-Centric Foundation. Erica writes about and curates performances of Braxton’s work\, most recently coaching members of Tactus (Manhattan School of Music) in performance practice and lecturing on analytical approaches to Braxton’s music at Columbia University. Additionally\, Erica has toured with Braxton internationally\, appearing at festivals such as Berlin Jazz Festival\, Jazz Middelheim Festival (Belgium)\, Jantar Festival (Poland)\, Akbank Festivali (Turkey)\, Skopje Jazz Festival (Macedonia)\, the Venice Biennale\, and Warsaw Autumn Festival. \nAaron Pond: \nOriginally\, a classical musician\, I stopped performing conventionally notated music in college\, and dedicated my singing to the trees and birds of Sarasota Bay. It was there that I connected with something greater than myself. After moving to Philadelphia in 2018\, I fell in love with free improvisation\, world music\, and the larger scene which was unfolding here. In 2021\, I picked up the horn again and have been ripping it ever since. My improvisational practice is drawn from early atonal music\, the playful spirituality of the AACM\, and a South Florida childhood spent in synagogues and swamps. My scholarly pursuits center the universal aesthetic structures of spirit possession and the marking power of ritual. I wish to find myself in the turbulent seas of sensation. \nIn 2026 People’s Music Supply will be conducting workshops of Anthony Braxton’s Ghost Trance Music. Find out more about these upcoming workshops tonight. \nAccessibility statement: Located on the 2nd floor up a steep flight of stairs.

SUMMARY:Saccata Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Saccata Quartet is a supergroup featuring guitar explorer Nels Cline (Wilco\, CUP with Yuka C. Honda\, his own Consentrik Quartet); percussionist Glenn Kotche (Wilco as well as myriad recordings by everyone from John Luther Adams to Taylor Swift); drummer Chris Corsano (a collaborator with countless free improvisers including Joe McPhee and Bill Orcutt); and bassist Darin Gray (touring bassist for Tweedy and Jim O’Rourke’s longtime bassist of choice). While Saccata Quartet’s music could probably well be called free jazz\, drone\, dark ambient\, post-noise or kosmische-noir\, it should not be labeled too rigorously under any one of those banners. As a work of four lauded instrumentalists\, their sound\, be it loud and undeniably wall-like or hazy and quiet\, almost fog-like\, comes from a place of democratic free expression of four musicians coming together on their own terms. Monolith Cocktail called them “a harrowing and galloping\, scattering merger of Faust\, Roscoe Mitchell\, Sam Rivers\, Zappa and AEOC in a dense experimental world of scares and uncertainty.”

SUMMARY:Friends & Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:Friends & Neighbors are a powerhouse of the Scandinavian jazz avant-garde\, known for their explosive energy\, fearless improvisation\, and deep-rooted reverence for the radical spirit of 1960s free jazz. Taking their name from a lesser-known Ornette Coleman classic\, the quintet channels the uncompromising ethos of artists like Coltrane\, Ayler\, and Shepp\, while forging their own fiercely contemporary sound. Comprised of André Roligheten (tenor saxophone)\, Thomas Johansson (trumpet)\, Oscar Grönberg (piano)\, Jon Rune Strøm (double bass)\, and Tollef Østvang (drums)\, the group draws on a vast web of experience from their work in ensembles such as Gard Nilssen’s Acoustic Unity\, Cortex\, Universal Indians\, Trondheim Jazz Orchestra\, and Paal Nilssen-Love’s Large Unit. Friends & Neighbors have steadily built a reputation for high-intensity performances and adventurous compositions that balance ecstatic abandon with striking lyricism\, making them a vital force in modern improvised music.

His album “Thin Walls” bridges the sounds of abandoned apartments\, bedrooms he’s lived in\, and the ephemera that exists in those places into a conceptual work about memory and artificial comfort. Under his project Pallet Fountains\, he utilized found sounds and urban environments to create pseudo-tropical landscapes that are aggressive and fantastical in their nature. Whether it is through confrontational performance art\, or isolated media experiences\, Linton’s music invites the ears and eyes to engage with space in a way that is deeply anthropological and corporeal. \nhttps://holdenlinton.bandcamp.com/ \nhttps://www.instagram.com/holden.linton/ \nGiant is a four piece “Gut Music” group from Philadelphia\, PA. SUMMARY:Cornelius Cardew's Treatise
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present the Arcana New Music Ensemble performing Cornelius Cardew’s groundbreaking work Treatise at The Rotunda. \nComposed between 1962-1967\, Treatise employs an entirely graphic score with symbols that at times looks like traditional music notation then morphs into beautiful esoteric shapes\, curved lines\, and large black dots. Without any instruction for performance and almost 200 pages long\, the work requires careful discussion and interpretation by the musicians to realize the work. \nARCANA NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE \nNicholas Handahl – flute\nNoa Even – saxophone\nMelinda Rice – violin\nCarlos Santiago – violin\nAlyssa Almeida – cello\nAndy Thierauf – percussion

SUMMARY:Masma Dream World & Sunken Cages
DESCRIPTION:Masma Dream World: \nWith roots in Gabon and Singapore\, Masma Dream World is the experimental project led by artist and healer Devi Mambouka. \nMasma Dream World invites listeners into a deeply personal and transformative sonic ritual. Her music is an elemental longing\, an invocation to ancestors\, and a communion with nature\, designed to transport you into a scary yet thrilling forest at night. \nHer sound meticulously explores the tension between eerie\, deep bass and percussive\, deconstructed elements\, creating emotionally charged atmospheres. Rooted in global bass cultures and her rich heritage\, her unpredictable yet intentional compositions incorporate beats\, bells\, chants\, and wails. Field recordings from ancient churches\, natural landscapes\, and intimate personal spaces blend with mystical practices\, evoking a theta-wave meditation into the mind’s deeper crevices. \nMasma Dream World’s music pushes the beautiful against the brutal\, blending lullabies with cacophony. Songs like PLEASE COME TO ME are a beckoning into darkness\, filled with primordial sounds and unsettling moments that put the audience in a trance. Her work is not merely heard but experienced\, demanding participation in a gothic love affair with mystery and healing. \nSunken Cages: \nIndian-born drummer/electronic music producer Ravish Momin (also known as Sunken Cages)\, studied with US Jazz master-drummer Andrew Cyrille.  He has worked as a sideman with a wide array of musicians including US Jazz legend Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre (AACM/Chicago) and pop-star Shakira. In the past\, he led Tarana\, a shapeshifting global-Jazz trio\, on international and domestic stages for the past 14 years \nHis current projects include ‘Turning Jewels Into Water’ (with Haitian electronic music pioneer Val Jeanty)\, a duo with dragonchild (Ethio-American saxophonist DA Mekonnen of Debo Band) and Zelzeleh (a Digital Sufi Ensemble) \nHe has recently produced tracks with South African Gqom group Phelimuncasi (Nyege Nyege Records)\, Saxophonist Maria Valencia (Meridian Brothers)\, along with producers Makossiri (Hakuna Kulala\, Kenya)\, Saskia (QTV\, Brazil)\, Kush Arora (Discrepant\, US)\, Baba Sy (Jokkoo Collective\, Spain/Senegal) and Rani Jambak (Indonesia\, Yes No Wave) \nHe has done remixes for Depeche Mode\, global electronic music producers Batida (Portugal)\, Babani Sound System (Mauritius)\,  and Guedra Guedra (Morocco). \nHis recent performance highlights include the Free Forma Impulse Festival (Italy)\, AfroBanana Festival (Cyprus)\, Words/Beat/ Life Festival (Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage (US))\, Big Ears Festival (US)\, LeGuessWho? SUMMARY:Air Legacy Trio AACM 60th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:Air – the legendary trio of saxophonist\, flutist\, and hubkaphone inventor/player Henry Threadgill\, bassist Fred Hopkins\, and drummer Steve McCall – emerged from the fertile collective of Chicago’s AACM in the 1970s to become one of the most thrilling ensembles of the decade. Based around the compositions and arrangements of Pulitzer Prize winner and NEA Jazz Master Threadgill\, Air was a musical high-wire act\, three master musicians engaged in continual creative interplay of dazzling instrumental virtuosity. The spirit of Air now lives on in the form of the Air Legacy Trio. Threadgill himself recommended his multi-instrumentalist colleague Marty Ehrlich to step into his role in the trio\, along with the great drummer Pheeroan AkLaff\, who had filled the late Steve McCall’s shows in the last edition of Air in the mid-1980s. Both Ehrlich and AkLaff had performed extensively with the late Fred Hopkins and called upon bassist Hilliard Greene to provide the big sound and creativity that characterized Hopkins’ work.

SUMMARY:SOUND TYPE: Burnt Pink x John Morrison
DESCRIPTION:SOUND TYPE 2025 will close with Burnt Pink\, born in 2018 when longtime friends Chris Acree (Strange Parts\, Upholstery)\, Corey Carris Duncan (Pattern Is Movement\, Oh! Pears\, Strange Parts) and Martin Khoa Sweeney (MegaMega) began performing improvised live scores at the Art Dept in Philadelphia. A few short months later\, the mind meld was complete when Martin’s brother Mark Pham (aka Swarvy)\, visiting from LA\, joined. \nThey improvised and recorded a soundtrack to Stan Brakhage’s Dog Star Man\, music which would comprise their first LP\, Afterlife Dub. Since then\, they have continued to release more improvised ‘rugged healing music’ and live recordings at a breakneck pace\, including most recently\, Perfectionist\, a 7-track album recorded in a single session on Chris’ birthday. Burnt Pink was emphatically handpicked by guest writer John Morrison. \nJohn Morrison is a DJ\, radio host\, and music journalist\, covering Philadelphia’s music scene for over 25 years. Morrison is currently working on a history of Hip-Hop sampling presentation for The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music and writing a comprehensive biography of Philadelphia R&B legends\, Boyz II Men. Stay tuned for more information about the public seminar! \nSOUND TYPE Music Festival is a multi-part series of live concerts and public seminars that pair musicians with writers to reflect on music practice and critical feedback pushing against category\, form and stereotype. Join us at all five groundbreaking and genre-defying live events and discussions through 2025!

SUMMARY:Stuart Bogie & Buck McDaniel-Piano & Clarinet
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present composer-clarinetist Stuart Bogie and composer-keyboardist Buck McDaniel performing two concerts in one day\, continuing their acclaimed collaboration that began with the 2024 project November Variations. \nAt University Lutheran\, they turn to clarinet and piano. This pairing invites rhythmic nuance and spontaneous turns showcasing both composed works and improvisations highlighting each composer’s individual voice and another view of their shared improvisational language. \nFirst conceived in 2024\, November Variations began as a series of five improvised 9 a.m. concerts at New York’s Church of Our Saviour\, recorded live to capture each composition as it unfolded. The resulting five-part album is being released in parts leading up to the 2025 five-concert residency in Manhattan\, November 17 – 21. \nThe November 14 performances in Philadelphia offer an opportunity to experience the duo’s ethos of stillness\, connection\, and sonic exploration in two distinct instrumental settings. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nComposer and multi-instrumentalist Stuart Bogie was born in Evanston\, Illinois. He studied for 6 Years with Gary Onstad and at the Music Center of the North Shore before attending Interlochen Art Academy and the University of Michigan where he studied with Debra Chodacki. He is the recipient of a Meet the Composer grant and he composed the score for the Oscar nominated documentary How To Survive a Plague\, featuring performances by the Kronos Quartet. He has written for film\, television\, commercials\, and the stage. He has released 9 albums as a leader. \nDuring the pandemic lock-down\, Bogie performed a daily series of improvised solo clarinet pieces using the accompaniment drone tracks sent to him by over 50 different collaborators including Arcade Fire\, Richard Reed Parry\, Colin Stetson\, Sam Cohen\, Josh Kaufman\, Peter Murray\, E Dan\, Craig Finn\, Ryan Sawyer\, Dave Harrington\, Yuka Honda\, and James Murphy. Began in the second week of lock-down\, the series ran for over 150 days consecutively and has been collected into four volumes\, with more volumes in the works. An LP\, Morningside\, presenting 2 of the pieces made with James Murphy was released on October 27 on DFA records. This music is featured in a worldwide exhibition of photographs by Gregory Crewsden\, and can be heard in the documentary accompanying the exhibit. In July of 2023 Bogie premiered Morningside at Les Recontres d’Arles\, live scoring the documentary by Harper Glantz. His latest release is Patient Music\, a collaboration with longtime friends Josh Kaufman & Sam Cohen available now from Historical Fiction Records. \nBuck McDaniel is a composer\, conductor\, keyboardist\, and improviser based in New York City. His music blends the American Minimalist tradition with a personal storytelling practice. McDaniel’s work often explores site\, text\, and memory\, engaging both concert\, sacred\, and non-traditional spaces with equal depth and curiosity. \nHis compositions have been performed and broadcast internationally\, including on NBC’s Saturday Night Live\, BBC Radio 3\, WQXR\, and NPR’s The Moth Radio Hour. His work appears in Oliver Hermanus’s film The History of Sound\, starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor\, which premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present composer-clarinetist Stuart Bogie and composer-keyboardist Buck McDaniel performing two concerts in one day\, continuing their acclaimed collaboration that began with the 2024 project November Variations. \nAt Stoneleigh: a natural garden\, the duo performs for clarinet and organ\, melding contemporary American minimalism\, drones\, and rapturous melodies. McDaniel’s expansive organ voicings and deft melodic interplay provide a dynamic landscape for Bogie’s clarinet\, creating an immersive\, horizonless sound. SUMMARY:Wonderful Sound 3: Cooper-Moore\, Bobby Zankel & Chad Taylor + Tropos
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with Warriors of Wonderful Sound. \nWonderful Sound 3: Cooper-Moore\, Bobby Zankel & Chad Taylor: \nAs a composer\, performer\, instrument builder/designer\, storyteller\, teacher\, mentor\, and organizer\, Cooper-Moore has been a major catalyst in the world of creative music for over 40 years. As a child prodigy Cooper-Moore played piano in churches near his birthplace in the Piedmont region of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. His performance roots in the realm of avant jazz music date to the NYC Loft Jazz era in the early/mid-70s. His first fully committed jazz group was formed in 1970 – the collective trio Apogee with David S. Ware and drummer Marc Edwards. Sonny Rollins asked them to open for him at the Village Vanguard in 1973 and a studio recording of this group was made in 1977 – issued as Birth of a Being on hatHut under Ware’s name in 1979. \nFollowing an evidently rather trying European tour with Ware\, Beaver Harris\, and Brian Smith in 1981\, Cooper-Moore returned home and completely destroyed his piano\, with a sledgehammer and fire in his backyard. He didn’t play piano again until some years after\, instead focusing his energies from 1981-1985 on developing and implementing curriculum to teach children through music via the Head Start program. \nReturning to New York in 1985\, he spent a great part of his creative time working and performing with theater and dance productions\, largely utilizing his hand-crafted instruments. It was not until the early 90s\, when William Parker asked him to join his group In Order To Survive\, that Cooper-Moore’s pianistic gifts were again regularly featured in the jazz context. In the early ‘aughts the group Triptych Myth was his own first regular working jazz group in decades and together they blazed some trails and released two albums. A destined creative re-union with David S. Ware in the Planetary Unknown quartet\, the Digital Primitives trio with Assif Tsahar & Chad Taylor\, and continued work with William Parker followed. Cooper-Moore’s creative life continues well-strong and unabated into the present day. He was the Lifetime Achievement Honoree at the 22nd iteration of Vision Festval\, NYC on May 29\, 2017. \nBobby Zankel began playing music at an early age\, soon favoring the alto saxophone. After studying at the University of Wisconsin\, he attended Berklee College Of Music\, then went on to attain a BA degree from Empire State College (State University of New York). In the early 70s\, he attracted favorable attention during a spell with Cecil Taylor’s Unit Core Ensemble. Concurrently\, Zankel’s reputation spread within the adventurous New York loft scene owing to performances with Ray Anderson\, Sunny Murray\, William Parker and others. From 1975\, Zankel became resident in Philadelphia where he raised his family meanwhile becoming a respected and in-demand sideman with many artists\, notably those associated with the city’s thriving jazz scene. Groups he was with in these years\, in Philadelphia and elsewhere\, include the Hank Mobley -Sonny Gillete Quintet\, Jymmie Merritt’s Forerunners\, Odean Pope’s Saxophone Choir\, and Ruth Naomi Floyd. He continued to work with Taylor\, including visiting Europe. As a performer\, Zankel delivers intricate virtuoso bop playing with an intensely emotional core. Zankel was also continuing with his studies\, now with Dennis Sandole\, becoming a skilled and significant composer. As leader and sideman he has appeared at numerous festivals. His compositions have been performed by Lester Bowie\, Coles\, Marilyn Crispell\, Pope\, Jamaaladeen Tacuma and others. \nIt’s hard to overstate Taylor’s contributions to improvised music over the past three decades. A composer\, scholar and educator as well as a capaciously inventive percussionist now living in Philadelphia\, Taylor is probably best known as co-founder of the Chicago Underground Duo with trumpeter Rob Mazurek (and the numerous Underground iterations that have spun off of that original partnership). A professional on the Chicago scene from the age of 16\, he became a rhythmic muse for many of the most celebrated artists in improvised music\, including Fred Anderson\, Pharoah Sanders\, Nicole Mitchell\, Matana Roberts\, Ken Vandermark\, Darius Jones\, James Brandon Lewis\, Jaimie Branch\, Derek Bailey\, Marc Ribot\, and Peter Brötzmann. He’s also led numerous acclaimed ensembles of his own\, though never a trio quite like the one documented on The Daily Biological. \nBorn in 1973 in Tempe\, Arizona\, Taylor grew up in Chicago and was shaped by the city’s wide open improvisational ethic. He earned a BFA in jazz performance from the New School and an MFA from Rutgers University in jazz research and history. He’s forged deep creative alliances with a dazzling array of artists\, including guitarist Jeff Parker\, multi-instrumentalist Cooper-Moore\, guitarist Marc Ribot\, and bassist Eric Revis. He doesn’t have many releases under his own name since Taylor has tended to work in co-led or collective situations\, but his compositions have been featured on dozens of albums. \nTropos: \nTropos is a collective ensemble of improviser-composers featuring four distinctive voices in Brooklyn’s creative music scene: Phillip Golub (piano)\, Ledah Finck (violin)\, Yuma Uesaka (clarinets)\, and Aaron Edgcomb (drums/percussion). Their peculiar instrumentation and collaborative approach are defining characteristics of their work as an ensemble. As recipients of Chamber Music America’s 2023 Ensemble Forward grant\, Tropos spent a year developing their forthcoming album Switches (Endectomorph Music) under the mentorship of acclaimed saxophonist and composer Darius Jones. Tropos’ members call their aesthetic “outer-space chamber music” for the way their compositions push the boundaries between new music\, jazz\, noise\, and beyond. \n“This collective of young composers and improvisers have built a metropolis that doesn’t feel like a destination for travelers unwilling to turn off GPS. A love of process and discovery seems to be driving this music. There are no selfie vibrations here\, just a fearless commitment to compositional intention and to the development of Tropos’ collective improvisational language. \nIn 1918\, Le Corbusier—an architect\, designer\, painter\, urban planner\, and writer—befriended the Cubist painter Amédée Ozenfant\, which led to the creation of the art movement Purism. Two principles of this movement are: art consists in the conception before anything else\, and technique is only a tool\, humbly at the service of the conception. Each compositional work on Switches embodies these two principles and what I believe makes this ensemble special. \nListen to this music fearlessly and embrace a new metropolis.” -Darius Jones \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.
