SUMMARY:Madison Greenstone\, Holden Linton & ?????
DESCRIPTION:Madison Greenstone is a clarinetist\, writer\, and composer based in Brooklyn. Their solo practice\, exstatic resonances\, explores phenomenological\, material\, and spatial expressivities of sound through richly noisy timbral actions. As the clarinetist of TAK Ensemble\, “one of the most prominent ensembles in the United States practicing truly experimental music” (I Care If You Listen) they have premiered music by Tyshawn Sorey\, Eric Wubbels\, Weston Olencki\, Michelle Lou\, Jessie Cox\, Brandon López and champions some of the most radical music currently devised. Their debut solo album\, Resonance Studies in Ecstatic Consciousness (Relative Pitch Records)\, was included in Bandcamp’s Best Experimental Music of 2023 compilation\, and has been described as “one hell of a calling card” (The Wire) and “mind-blowing” (Nowhere Street). Madison can be heard on labels such as Wandelweiser Editions\, Another Timbre\, TAK Editions\, Pleasure of the Text Records\, eë editions\, Unknown Tapes\, New Focus Recordings\, Impakt Collective\, Greyfade\, Important Records\, Mengi\, and Longform Editions. \nHolden Linton is a Multi-media artist based in Philadelphia\, PA whose works reimagines physical environments into direct audio-visual experiences. His album “Thin Walls” bridges the sounds of abandoned apartments\, bedrooms he’s lived in\, and the ephemera that exists in those places into a conceptual work about memory and artificial comfort. Under his project Pallet Fountains\, he utilized found sounds and urban environments to create pseudo-tropical landscapes that are aggressive and fantastical in their nature. Whether it is through confrontational performance art\, or isolated media experiences\, Linton’s music invites the ears and eyes to engage with space in a way that is deeply anthropological and corporeal.

SUMMARY:Get Up With It A Miles Davis Centennial Celebration - Jack Johnson
DESCRIPTION:With its roots in the San Francisco Bay Area\, the collective ensemble Get Up With It has been exploring the electric music of Miles Davis since the late 90s. Best known as the drummer for the Grammy-winning\, Philly-born rock band The War on Drugs\, Charlie Hall is also a professed Miles Davis fanatic who formed Get Up With It to pay homage to the iconic trumpeter’s groundbreaking electric music. \nNow in its third decade\, the adventurous ensemble will focus on three of Miles’ most revered and influential albums during this three-night residency. The run kicks off with 1969’s In a Silent Way\, the album that inaugurated Davis’ long-controversial\, now-heralded electric period. PItchfork has called the album\, “a beacon of uncanny originality and visionary foresight.” The series continues with the 1970 magnum opus Bitches Brew\, which has come to be celebrated as one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Guitarist John McLaughlin has referred to Bitches Brew as “Picasso in sound.” The series concludes with 1971’s Jack Johnson\, which originated as the soundtrack to Bill Cayton’s documentary on the famed boxer. The Guardian has called the resulting album “one of the most remarkable jazz-rock discs of the era.” \n\nCharlie Hall — drums\, percussion\nNazir Ebo — drums\nDaniel Villarreal — percussion\nDM Hotep — guitar\nRoss Bellenoit — guitar\nLuke O’Reilly — keyboard\nCorey Bernhard — keyboard\nMitch Marcus — saxophone\, keyboard\nEzra Gale — bass\nBobby Spellman — trumpet\nEmily Pecoraro — bass clarinet

He began his music career with Hildred Humphries\, a swing era veteran who played with Count Basie and Billie Holiday. In 2002 he began performing in ensembles led by Sabir Mateen. In 2005\, Lavelle began study with Ornette Coleman. Lavelle was a member of the Bern Nix quartet from 2010-2017. In 2011 Lavelle created the 12 Houses Orchestra. Lavelle has played and collaborated with Ornette Coleman\, William Parker\, Warren Smith\, Henry Grimes\, Eric Mingus\, Sabir Mateen\, Roy Campbell\, Daniel Carter\, Jemeel Moondoc\, Mat Maneri\, Ras Moshe\, Hilliard Greene\, Steve Swell\, Matana Roberts\, Bern Nix\, Jack DeSalvo\, Charles Downs\, Tom Cabrera\, Francois Grillot\, Giuseppi Logan\, William Hooker and many others. Lavelle published his first book\, New York City Subway Drama and Beyond\, in 2011. In 2013 he published a second book called The Jazz Musician’s Tarot Deck. Lavelle is also the author of the blog No Sound Left Behind. \nJulius Masri is a Philadelphia based multi instrumentalist\, and performer/composer for the city’s dance community at large. His music focuses on improvisatory methods and syncretic / linguistic exchanges within various musical languages including Jazz\, Metal\, AfroCuban\, Experimental Noise\, and Arabic music. Born in Tripoli\, Lebanon\, he moved to the States in 1990 and picked up drumming a year later. He studied with Philadelphia instructors Carl Mottola\, Elaine Hoffman-Watts\, and as an undergraduate at Bard College\, with AACM’s Thurman Barker\, Richard Teitelbaum\, and Joan Tower. Julius plays drums\, circuit modified Casio keyboards\, Oud\, Kamancheh (aka Rabab\, Spike Fiddle)\, and various other instruments. He currently performs in groups such as grind/crust metal band Night Raids\, free jazz groups Sirius Juju and Dromedaries\, trombone and synth duo Superlith\, and more. He has performed with Henry Grimes\, Jamaaladeen Tacuma\, Thurman Barker and members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. Julius is a recipient of a 2022 Yaddo Fellowship for composition\, the 2022 university of the arts creative research and innovation grant\, and project funding via pew center for arts & heritage\, as well as Swarthmore college and the Andrew W. Mellon foundation. \nPete Dennis (he/they) is a bassist\, composer\, improviser\, visual artist and teacher. After growing up in Richmond\, Virginia\, he moved to Philadelphia where he has been inspired by the creative music and art of his vibrant community. Other inspirations include his teacher William Parker\, his partner Abigail Swoboda\, and the fine vibrations of the sacred sound. In 2019\, Dennis released his first two recordings\, Killing a Dixie Hummingbird and Look at My Roses\, under his main project name Search for the Infinite Light. Since then has continued to release music under this moniker\, and with the ensembles Spectral Forces & 99 Futures. Dennis considers himself fortunate to create with many close friends and collaborators in bands such as Mitamu and Deliriant. He believes that sound is the foundation of healing and wants to acknowledge all master improvisors of the past and present\, we stand on the shoulders of giants. \nJason Stein\, Damon Smith & Adam Shead: \nA Chicago-rooted improvising trio uniting bass clarinetist Jason Stein\, double bassist Damon Smith\, and percussionist Adam Shead. Since forming in late 2021\, the group has toured extensively across the Midwest and beyond\, becoming a fixture in the creative music circuit and collaborating with influential figures such as Roscoe Mitchell. Their recorded work documents a remarkably productive period\, encompassing four releases: Volumes & Surfaces (2022)\, Hum (2023)\, spi-raling horn with Marilyn Crispell (2024)\, and Live at the Hungry Brain with Marilyn Crispell (2025). Together\, these albums trace the group’s evolution from kinetic\, small-ensemble interplay toward expansive collaborations that bridge generations of avant-jazz practice. \nCritics have consistently praised the trio’s fearless energy and deep listening. All About Jazz described Volumes & Surfaces as “undiluted free jazz with energy as its calling card and attention as its driver\,” while The Free Jazz Collective called their collaboration with Marilyn Crispell “stunning” and “full of muscular interplay.” Known for their balance of precision and volatility\, Stein/Smith/Shead channel the improvisational lineage of Chicago’s creative music scene into a sound that is at once restless\, focused\, and alive to the moment. Their forthcoming 2025 tour marks the trio’s first since 2022\, signaling a new chapter for one of the most dynamic ensembles in contemporary improvised music. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom.

SUMMARY:Mankwe Ndosi/Jamal R. Moore duo & Erik Ruin's Ominous Cloud Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented with Clavius Productions: \nMankwe Ndosi & Jamal R. Moore duo: \nMankwe Ndosi is Vocalist\, Composer\, and Interdisciplinary Culture Maker who conjures sound\, story\, and movement into transformative experiences. A sonic shape-shifter\, she bends melody and rhythm into a living practice that amplifies the resonance between people\, land\, and ancestral memory. Rooted in Black ritual legacies of music and performance\, Mankwe’s work explores the power of voice—not just as an instrument\, but as a force for healing\, connection\, and liberation. Drawing on the Pan-African sensibility of artists like Nina Simone and Miriam Makeba\, she honors her Tanzanian and Black American heritage\, weaving together global soundscapes and ancestral wisdom. Her artistry is deeply influenced by collaborations with Douglas R. Ewart\, Laurie Smith Carlos\, Sharon Bridgforth\, Amoke Kubat\, Nicole Mitchell\, the Give Get Sistet\, Davu Seru\, Medium Zach\, Tomeka Reid\, ancestors\, and creative kin across disciplines and species. A member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians since 2022\, and a Resident Community Engaged Artist at Pillsbury House + Theatre in Minneapolis\, Mankwe works at the intersection of sound\, movement\, and earthwork—crafting immersive experiences that engage the body\, spirit\, and collective imagination. Whether on stage\, in community gatherings\, or in experimental sonic landscapes\, she invites audiences into spaces of deep listening\, serious play\, and radical re-membering. Her sonic explorations are embodied in albums such as Do Gooder’s Blues (2009) and Science and Spirit (2012)\, both collaborations with Hip-Hop musician/producer Medium Zach. The latter was named one of the best albums of 2012 by the now-defunct City Pages in Minneapolis. Her most recent work\, Felt/not said (2021)with ensemble Body mEmOri \, features fellow AACM members Davu Seru\, Tomeka Reid\, and special guest Silvia Bolognesi\, and was celebrated in Jazz Times for its experimental spirit and transformative energy\, blending rhythmic intricacies with deep ancestral resonance. Brit Robson of Jazz Times describes her work in Felt/not said as\, “Bring[ing] a brand new dictionary to music. Her sonic language is a string of spontaneous combustions that nod toward Jeanne Lee and Meredith Monk\, informed by the African village…” Off-stage\, she is an embodied cultural strategist\, weaving creative practice into social transformation. From arts-rooted community engagement gatherings to equity workshops infused with improvisation and ritual\, she builds bridges between disciplines\, generations\, and ways of knowing. She is most alive in fertile engagements of earth\, sound\, and movement—regenerating and re-membering the connections that sustain us. \nJamal R. Moore is a multi-instrumentalist\, composer\, improviser\, educator\, and native of Baltimore\, Maryland. Moore’s research-driven practice incorporates percussion\, woodwinds\, and electronic synthesis\, exploring African American/Diasporic traditions and global indigenous aesthetics. \nMoore leads several groups—Akebulan Arkestra\, Napata Strings\, Black Elements Quartet\, Organix Trio\, and Mojuba Duo—and has received numerous chamber ensemble commissions. Sawud Rayay (2022)\, which translates to “Black Sun”\, is a four-movement symphony composed for Mind on Fire\, an arts organization presenting contemporary music in Baltimore. The work explores the Egyptian cosmology of the sun and its impact on human creation and existence\, employing a graphic notation language Moore developed called “Tasu-Re” to guide collective improvisation through composed movements. \nMoore has worked and recorded with luminaries such as Wadada Leo Smith\, Roscoe Mitchell\, Nicole Mitchell\, Archie Shepp\, David Ornette Cherry\, Tomeka Reid\, Dr. Bill Cole\, DJ Lou Gorbea\, George Duke\, Sheila E.\, David Murray\, J.D. Parran\, Ras Moshe\, Hprizm\, Tatsuya Nakatani\, Hamid Drake\, and Yahya Abdul Majid (Sun Ra Arkestra). He is an affiliate of The Pan African Peoples Arkestra\, founded by Horace Tapscott; Black Praxis of David Boykin; and is a member of Konjur Collective. \nMoore holds an M.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts and a B.M. from Berklee College of Music. He was a member of the Eubie Blake Jazz Orchestra (2000) under the direction of Christopher Calloway Brooks\, and graduated from the Frederick Douglass High School\, whose notable alumni include Thurgood Marshall\, Cab Calloway\, and Ethel Ennis. \nErik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble: \nErik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble is an ever-evolving\, collectively-improvising large ensemble for projections and music\, led by visual artist Erik Ruin\, lauded by the New York Times for his “spell-binding cut-paper animations.” Erik manipulates intricate paper-cuts and painted films on overhead projectors to create abstract landscapes and fragmentary scenes that are nonetheless charged with meaning\, merging with music that ranges from dark atmospherics to ecstatic peaks of dissonance. Members of the ensemble include a rotating cast of Philly’s finest musicians\, who have collaborated with everyone from Anthony Braxton to the Sun Ra Arkestra to Bardo Pond. This performance will be a “throwback” all-analog overhead projector set and feature musicians Tara Middleton and DM Hotep\, both of the Sun Ra Arkestra\, and percussionist Scott Verrastro of Kohoutek. \nvenue is wheelchair accessible

SUMMARY:Relâche: Re | PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:In Re | PUBLIC\, we’ll join the national celebration by revisiting some of our favorite repertoire from American composers. These are wonderfully innovative works\, but we think that you’ll find them especially compelling in the context of America’s Big Party: Tuneful\, evocative\, ebullient… and downright fun!We commissioned Waiting in the Tall Grass from the wonderful Galen Brown\, and included it on our 2014 recording Comix Trips. We love how its undulating sway leads to a pulsating journey through a landscape of rich colors. The music of Raymond Scott may be more familiar by ear than by name; Philadelphia arranger Darin Kelly brought several of his absolutely infectious tunes to life for that same 2014 recording\, with their outright lunacy making them perfect for use in many classic animated cartoons. Eric Moe was inspired to compose Incisive\, with intermittent wailing for us after attending our 2024 performance at Black Squirrel Club in Fishtown\, and we were thrilled with the result. It’s hard to imagine presenting any kind of retrospective of Relâche’s connection with American music without including something composed by one of our founding members\, the late Guy Klucevsek. Guy’s music teems with his upbringing in central Pennsylvania\, where his family’s Eastern European heritage\, his community’s love of traditional polka and his innovations on the accordion all came together in a wonderful melting pot of melody\, rhythm and rugged beauty. And what could be more American than that late-night trip to the diner for an All-American Slam? Robert Bowen’s work of that title will have you jonesing for a hot cup of joe and a full plate of soul-feeding comfort food.

SUMMARY:Morton Feldman: Three Voices Charlotte Mundy\, voice
DESCRIPTION:Feldman’s “Three Voices” was written for the experimental vocalist and composer Joan LaBarbara in 1982. The original concept involved the live performer singing along with two pre-recorded parts projected through on-stage amplifiers\, creating an effect of three individual “voices”\, all with the same origin (Ms. LaBarbara). Three Voices is indeed a challenging and ground-breaking work\, and has very rarely been performed live with three singers due to its nearly impossible demands on the human voice and psyche – impeccable rhythmic concentration\, shrewd attention to tuning\, and the ability to sound as one voice in three parts. The text is based on Frank O’Hara’s poem\, Wind\, and shapes\, twists\, and morphs short phrases from the poem into an hour-long musical experience. \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST \nCanadian soprano Charlotte Mundy has been dubbed a “daredevil with an unbreakable spine” (SF Classical Voice)\, and “mesmerizing” (New York Times). As a founding member of TAK ensemble\, “one of the most prominent ensembles in the United States practicing truly experimental music” (I Care If You Listen)\, Mundy has performed at Lincoln Center and the Library of Congress\, premiering works by Tyshawn Sorey\, Erin Gee\, Eric Wubbels\, Brandon Lopez\, and Natacha Diels. Mundy is also a core member of Ekmeles\, described as “beyond expert – almost frightening in their precision” by Fanfare magazine and recent recipients of the Ernst von Siemens Ensemble Prize. \nMundy’s recent projects as a soloist include site-specific opera Newtown Odyssey by Kurt Rohde and Marie Lorenz; premieres of concert works by Alyssa Regent and Aida Shirazi\, and the debut of a new collaborative multimedia project with Christian Quiñones. Past performances include critically acclaimed renditions of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire\, Boulez’s Le Marteau sans Maître\, Feldman’s Three Voices\, George Benjamin’s Into the Little Hill\, Iannis Xenakis’ Akanthos\, and a set of music for voice and electronics presented by New York Festival of Song\, described as “an oasis of radiant beauty” by the New York Times.

Thanks to @eastpassyunk and @passyarc for helping to coordinate and allowing us to fill this space with some ambient music! \nIf this is your first time hearing about the Ambient Open Mic\, it’s an event we put on to create a low pressure environment for ambient and electronic musicians to play live and share their art with the community. You don’t need expensive gear to play! It is a welcoming space for everyone\, whether it’s your first time playing out or you’re a veteran\, or you just want to enjoy the live music. \nI know many of you have already reached out about playing the next open mic\, we will be reaching back out to you all. As usual though\, we will be prioritizing new performers. We also request that sets be on the more ambient side this time\, as much as we like getting a little noisy\, we want to be good neighbors here. If you are interested in playing the open mic\, leave a comment or send a DM. Spots fill up quick! All instruments are welcome\, max set time is 15 minutes. Bring your friends even if you’re not going to play!

SUMMARY:Max Johnson Sextet & Thomas Kraines
DESCRIPTION:Max Johnson Sextet: \nComposer\, bassist\, and improviser Max Johnson presents his brand new sextet in the premiere of “Without Fear\,” a new concert-length work performed alongside Anna Webber (tenor saxophone\, flute)\, Yuma Uesaka (soprano saxophone\, clarinet)\, Nate Wooley (trumpet)\, Lester St. Louis (cello)\, Max Johnson (double bass)\, and Jeff Davis (drumset\, vibraphone). The piece is a sprawling\, style-blurring composition that explores the many musical worlds Johnson has inhabited over the past fifteen years\, weaving together elements of jazz\, chamber music\, folk music\, free improvisation\, and progressive rock. \nThe work draws from Johnson’s experience as an in-demand performer and prolific composer\, having performed internationally and recorded with artists such as Anthony Braxton\, Geri Allen\, the Daedalus Quartet\, David Grisman\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Mary Halvorson\, Mivos Quartet\, and several alumni of Frank Zappa’s bands. Conceived as a musical ecosystem where diverse influences coexist and interact\, “Without Fear” highlights the individual voices and abilities of the ensemble while bringing Johnson’s expansive musical vision into a single personal work. \nAs a lover of comic books\, the piece is inspired by the Green Lantern\, whose power ring can create anything imaginable through sheer force of will\, so long as its bearer remains without fear. Like the ring itself\, the work imagines a creative space where the many musical languages Johnson inhabits can live together within a single composition. \nThomas Kraines: \nThomas Kraines\, a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School\, has gained renown as a versatile cellist\, composer\, and teacher. In addition to the Daedalus Quartet\, he performs often with his wife\, violinist Juliette Kang\, with the Philadelphia-based Network for New Music\, the Arcana Ensemble\, and the improvisatory ensembles Great Blue Heron and Basquiat Blues. Kraines’ solo cello and chamber compositions have been heard around the country. He has performed his own works in collaboration with artists such as Awadagin Pratt\, Mimi Stillman\, Maria Jette\, Ilana Davidson\, and Kinan Abou-afach. Kraines has served on the faculty of the Longy School of Music\, Princeton University\, Peabody Conservatory\, Phillips Academy Andover\, and Yellow Barn. He currently teaches at the University of Pennsylvania and the Settlement Music School in Philadelphia. \n  \naccessibility: space is on the second floor up a flight of stairs.

SUMMARY:Paolo Angeli
DESCRIPTION:Paolo Angeli: \nSardinian musician Paolo Angeli’s professional career was spent deep in the avant garde\, exploring post-rock\, experimental opera\, and more. His style was influenced heavily by that of guitarist Giovanni Scanu\, who was a major proponent of the classic Sardinian canto a chitarra style. The combination of inputs inspired Angeli to create his own instrument: an 18-stringed hybrid of guitar\, baritone\, violoncello\, and drums\, adorned with hammers\, pedals\, and even propellers operating at various speeds. Working closely with craftsman Francesco Concas\, Angeli created an instrument that enables an altogether new type of performance combining\, referencing\, and transcending free jazz\, folk noise\, and minimal pop. \n“Paulo Angeli is a musical conjurer\, an artist whose imaginative leaps defy gravity. A composer\, ethnomusicologist and instrument builder who draws on his deep knowledge of traditional Sardinian music\, he inhabits a timeless zone as a soil-rooted master and brash experimentalist. While suffused with Mediterranean cadences\, Angeli’s original pieces encompass flamenco\, jazz\, Baroque\, post-rock and new music. He plays a prepared Sardinian guitar of his own invention\, a fantastical 18-string hybrid combining elements of guitar\, cello and drums. \nA feast for the eyes as well as the ears\, Angeli in full flight is an astounding sight\, as he bows\, strikes\, hammers\, plucks and strums an instrument with strings going in all directions and foot-pedal-controlled motorized propellers. With sympathetic strings creating shimmering drones\, he adjusts tunings on the fly to create exquisitely lapidary\, orchestral music using electronic effects in real time (he eschews loopers\, creating every sound in the moment). \nIt’s not surprising that this singular musician has improvised and collaborated with masters such as Pat Metheny\, Fred Frith\, Evan Parker\, Zeena Parkins\, and Phillip Greenlief. Angeli’s music may be unclassifiable\, but it takes no expertise to recognize its strange and extravagant beauty”-SF Jazz \nvenue is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Marisa Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Marisa Anderson’s music transcends borders. The topography of her work interrogates the intersections of artistry and expression with form and tradition. A singular guitarist and voracious musical collaborator\, Anderson crafts pieces bursting with equal parts reverence and curiosity\, contouring familiar shapes into work that is wholly her own. Anderson has spent decades mining the veins of the complicated\, interconnected American folk traditions she was steeped in from a young age\, stretching beyond those traditions and incorporating the vocabulary and techniques of vernacular and folk musics from across time and beyond boundary into her work. Eschewing replication or revival\, Anderson’s music lives in conversation with tradition. “My approach to tradition is with the hands that I have and the history that I have\,” notes Anderson. “In that way it’s a collaboration–you don’t go into collaboration trying to play like the other person\, you go in trying to find out how to play together.”

SUMMARY:Kalia Vandever
DESCRIPTION:Kalia Vandever is a Grammy Award-winning trombonist and composer based in Brooklyn. Their approach to the trombone is distinctive and defined by their sonorous tone and lyrical improvisational voice. They lean into the challenges of the instrument and allow patience and melody to guide their process. In their compositional practice\, Vandever draws from their love of songs and improvisation\, creating a landscape of sounds that resonate in the body and hold the listener. \nWriting for WBGO Jazz\, Nate Chinen said that Vandever’s 2022 sophomore album Regrowth “confirms [their] strengths as a composer and bandleader with a distinctly contemporary point of view.” (Nate Chinen\, WBGO Jazz). 2025’s Another View featured the stellar cast of Mary Halvorson\, Kanoa Mendenhall and Kayvon Gordon and was praised by Downbeat for “its entrancing\, cyclical rhythms and longing melodicism.” At Solar Myth\, Vandever will be taking another bold stride forward in their ongoing creative evolution.
