SUMMARY:Alash
DESCRIPTION:Alash: \nAlash are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. Trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, and trained by legendary Tuvan musician Kongar-ool Ondar\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed new ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music\, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. \naccessibility: ramp into lobby\, then 7 stairs into theater

DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present a morning birdwalk at the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum led by In Color Birding interspersed with two performances by percussionists Salina Kuo and Andy Thierauf. \nPlease take note of the weather and dress accordingly with appropriate footwear.\nMeet at the Environmental Education Pavilion\, to the right of the visitor center\, near the parking lot\, there are toilets and a water fountain nearby. Map \nEstimated run time: 120 minutes\nDistance: approx. one mile\nTerrain: ADA accessible\nFree admission – reservations are encouraged\n \nABOUT THE EVENT \nFollow the Sound is a communal outdoor listening experience that combines a guided nature walk with live music. Each ambulatory program is attuned to the here and now of its site — birds\, bugs\, water\, and wind — creating a moment of shared awareness and presence. \nFollow the Sound events are free and have been hosted at various sites throughout the Philadelphia area including John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum\, the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education\, Stoneleigh: a natural garden\, and more\, each led by a naturalist with expertise of the local ecosystem. \nEach ~90-minute program entails walking a distance of less than one mile\, usually on flat\, accessible terrain. A wide range of diverse musicians have participated on an array of flutes\, electronics\, violins\, viola da gamba\, and more\, in solo and impromptu duo formats. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nSalina Kuo is a singer/songwriter\, percussionist\, self-taught guzhengist\, improviser and educator based in Philadelphia (Lenape territory). They have a deep admiration for black American music\, world folk\, free improvisation\, and 60s/70s fem singer/songwriters. They write music that blends genres and utilizes uncommon instrumentation to create a unique yet cohesive and familiar sound. By confronting personal experiences with grief and depression\, Kuo’s storytelling invites listeners into their world and share in their healing. They release music under St. John’s Wort (vibraphone indie/rnb/soul) and River Full of Fruit (freak-folk chamber ensemble). River Full of Fruit’s “Only the Earth” release show will be 11/12 at Asian Arts Initiative. St. John’s Wort’s debut album is forthcoming. \nAndy Thierauf is a Philadelphia-based percussionist specializing in the creation and performance of contemporary music. His work is driven by a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration\, frequently integrating percussion with theater\, dance\, and technology to create immersive and innovative performances. He is an active member of Arcana New Music Ensemble\, NakedEye Ensemble\, Network for New Music\, and Orchestra 2001\, among other ensembles in the Philadelphia area. In addition to his performance career\, Andy serves as an Artist Teacher of Percussion at The College of New Jersey\, is on faculty of Settlement Music School and is Adjunct Professor of Percussion at Kutztown University.\nwww.andythierauf.com \nIn Color Birding provides an entry point to birding for BIPOC communities in and around Greater Philadelphia. The organization believes that everyone should have safe\, joyful\, and rewarding access to green spaces and the practice of birding. In Color Birding is an inclusive environment for those traditionally marginalized to increase their connections to and appreciation of the natural world through bird walks\, presentations\, funding of transportation costs for classrooms\, teacher mini-grants\, and visits to local sites.\nwww.incolorbirding.org \n

SUMMARY:The People United Will Never Be Defeated! - Heather O'Donnell piano
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present pianist Heather O’Donnell performing Frederick Rzewski’s iconic work The People United Will Never Be Defeated! 36 Variations on the Chilean Song ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido! at Trinity at 22nd. \nPROGRAM \nFrederic Rzewski (1938–2021)\nThe People United Will Never Be Defeated! (1975)\n36 Variations on the Chilean Song ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido! \nABOUT THE PROGRAM \nFrederic Rzewski composed The People United Will Never Be Defeated! in 1975\, creating one of the monumental works of twentieth-century piano literature. The hour-long cycle consists of thirty-six variations on the Chilean song ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!\, composed by Sergio Ortega and associated with the years surrounding Chile’s 1973 military coup. Over time\, the melody came to symbolize solidarity and the enduring human desire for dignity and self-determination. \nCommissioned for the United States Bicentennial\, the work was premiered by Ursula Oppens at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C.\, on 7 February 1976. \nRather than presenting a straightforward set of variations\, Rzewski transforms the song through an extraordinary range of musical languages – from counterpoint to jazz\, minimalism\, improvisation\, virtuosic display\, and moments of profound stillness. The result is a work that continually shifts between the individual and the collective\, certainty and doubt\, struggle and renewal. \nAlthough rooted in a specific historical moment\, the piece has long transcended its original context. Today it is regarded not only as one of the great masterpieces of contemporary piano literature but also as a meditation on resilience\, memory\, freedom\, and the enduring capacity of communities to imagine a different future. \n– H. O’Donnell \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nHeather O’Donnell is an American pianist\, psychologist\, author\, and founder of The Green Room\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mental health and professional sustainability of performing artists.\nAs a pianist\, she has appeared throughout Europe\, North America\, Asia\, and the Middle East as recitalist and concerto soloist\, performing with ensembles including the St. Petersburg State Symphony\, the Romanian State Philharmonic\, the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra Leipzig\, and the Tanglewood Festival Chamber Orchestra. Her performances have been broadcast by Deutschlandradio\, Radio France\, Deutsche Welle Television\, and other international media. \nInternationally recognized for her commitment to contemporary music\, O’Donnell has given more than thirty world premieres\, including works by Luciano Berio\, John Zorn\, Walter Zimmermann\, and James Tenney. She is the dedicatee of compositions by Michael Finnissy and Frederic Rzewski and received First Prize and the Gaudeamus Prize at the Fifth Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition in Kraków. Her artistic projects have included the commissioning initiatives Responses to Ives and Piano Optophonique\, and she appeared in Alexander Kluge’s cinematic interpretation of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital. \nFollowing a career interruption caused by injury\, O’Donnell completed degrees in psychology and redirected her work toward the wellbeing of artists. She holds an M.Sc. in Prevention and Health Psychology\, is a certified Artistic-Systemic Therapist (DGSF)\, and has become an internationally recognized voice on musicians’ health\, creativity\, identity\, and sustainable artistic careers. \nShe has lectured and presented at institutions including Weill Cornell Medicine\, the University College London-hosted Performing Arts Medicine Association Symposium\, Columbia University\, the Eastman School of Music\, the Max Planck Institute for Human Development\, and the Mozarteum University Salzburg. In addition to her clinical work\, she serves on the Board of the European Network of Cultural Centres (ENCC) and is the author of the forthcoming book Being a Musician: A Life Told in Failures and Renewals.

SUMMARY:IMMANUEL WILKINS QUARTET
DESCRIPTION:Please join Ars Nova Workshop at Solar Myth on October 18 for a special closing-night performance by saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins and his extraordinary quartet\, presented in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Philly Music Fest. \nFew artists embody the creative spirit of Philadelphia as profoundly as Wilkins and this ensemble. Together\, the quartet has emerged as one of the most vital and emotionally searching groups in contemporary music—melding deep lyricism\, collective improvisation\, spiritual intensity\, and fearless experimentation into a singular sound that feels both urgent and timeless. Rooted in Philadelphia yet resonating internationally\, their music reflects the very values that Philly Music Fest has championed for a decade: community\, risk-taking\, generosity\, and the transformative power of music.

SUMMARY:Tara Middleton / Jupiter Blue: A Coltrane 100 Philly Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join vocalist Tara Middleton and Jupiter Blue for a special Coltrane 100 Philly concert honoring the spirit and legacy of John Coltrane. Featuring Tara Middleton\, voice; DM Hotep\, guitar; and Daniel Villarreal\, drums. Free and open to all\, with donations welcome in support of St. Laurentius School. RSVP: https://forms.gle/xkx3JG4kjrpscTy57 \nhe Philadelphia duo of vocalist and lyricist Tara Middleton and guitarist-composer DM Hotep takes John Coltrane’s compositions as departure points and reopens them through voice\, guitar\, and responsive electronics. Both are members of the Sun Ra Arkestra\, and they carry Coltrane’s example of disciplined listening\, spiritual searching\, and musical freedom into new territory. Spoken word and song braid together\, treating the voice the way Coltrane treated the horn. Short spoken introductions welcome every listener\, no prior jazz knowledge needed. This is Coltrane honored through discovery\, not imitation\, hosted by St. Laurentius Parish at Holy Name of Jesus. A free evening bringing the centennial into a Philadelphia neighborhood room. \nTara Middleton is a Philadelphia jazz vocalist\, violinist\, flutist\, composer\, lyricist\, and music educator\, and the first female lead vocalist of the Sun Ra Arkestra in over twenty years\, a role she has held since 2012. She is a two-time Grammy-nominated artist\, writing lyrics for Swirling\, the album that earned the Arkestra its first Grammy nomination. She co-founded Jupiter Blue Music Ltd. with her husband David Middleton. A Pennsylvania Council on the Arts master teaching artist\, she teaches across Philadelphia-area schools and carries her framework\, the voice as first instrument\, into classrooms and community spaces throughout the city. Her work moves between the stage\, the page\, and the classroom\, always rooted in the belief that the voice is the first instrument every person already owns\n \nThis project is an awardee of the Coltrane 100 Philly Community Project Grant. \n\n\n\nJupiter Blue Music\nEmail: Jupiterbluemusic@gmail.com \nWebsite: https://forms.gle/xkx3JG4kjrpscTy57 \nEvent Website: https://forms.gle/xkx3JG4kjrpscTy57

SUMMARY:Amir ElSaffar & Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch: Inner Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Presented in Collaboration with Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture \nAmir ElSaffar & Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch: Inner Spaces \nTrumpeter\, santur player\, vocalist\, and composer Amir ElSaffar joins electronics performer and composer Lorenzo Bianchi-Hoesch in a new project exploring electro-acoustic spaces\, maqam\, microtonal harmonies\, and improvised and composed structures in a modular musical composition that accommodates a variety of musical styles across genres. Together\, they create an immersive sound that transcends notions of form\, musical language\, electronic\, and acoustic categories in music. This new work will be a modular composition combining pre-determined structural elements with freely improvised sections\, played live by ElSaffar and Bianchi-Hoesch. The work will explore electro-acoustic spaces in a microtonal environment that embraces the sonic spectra of multiple musical languages. \nBianchi-Hoesch and ElSaffar are interested in creating a trans-cultural collaboration combining jazz\, contemporary classical music\, maqam\, raga\, and other musical backgrounds\, inclusive of all the richness\, complexity\, and idiomatic expression\, without compromising or oversimplifying in order to be compatible with others. They are in search of boundary-less spaces in music. \naccessibility: located on the second floor up two flights of stairs.

SUMMARY:Dafnis Prieto Sí o Sí Quartet Fri\, October 23 8PM
DESCRIPTION:25 years after his arrival in New York\, the Grammy-winning and Latin Grammy-nominated drummer\, composer\, and MacArthur Fellow Dafnis Prieto has utterly shifted the sonic landscape of the jazz and creative music scene. With Prieto’s appearance on the NYC jazz scene likened to “an asteroid hitting the city” (The New York Times)\, and a reputation that rightfully lauds him as “one of the most multidimensional artists working today” (JazzTimes)\, it’s safe to say that his revolutionary drumming techniques and compositions have had a powerful impact on the music landscape\, nationally and internationally. \nPrieto’s acclaimed Sí o Sí (“Yes or Yes”) Quartet is a rightfully jubilant cohort comprising Peter Apfelbaum on woodwinds\, Martin Bejerano on piano\, and Ricky Rodríguez on electric bass\, brought together for their second release\, 3 Sides of the Coin\, to commemorate both the bandleader’s quarter century in the United States and his 50th birthday. The album began as a series of musings on the eternally undulating concept of one’s interpretation of the world and how each person’s view may dramatically differ. By taking the compositional and performance brilliance for which he is rightly beloved and marrying it to such a bold and pensive concept\, Prieto shows that not only is he a musician of the highest caliber\, but a thinker\, storyteller\, and sonic orator of the heart. \nFeaturing\n\nDafnis Prieto Sí o Sí Quartet \n\nDafnis Prieto – drums\nPeter Apfelbaum – woodwinds\nMartin Bejerano – piano\nRicky Rodríguez – electric bass

SUMMARY:Duo Tesserae / Noa Even
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present Duo Tesserae with an opening set by saxophonist\, Noa Even at University Lutheran Church. Noa Even\, Philly-based saxophonist\, opens the program with a short set of music for solo tenor saxophone. She performs her own piece\, Herzl\, which captures her ever-evolving relationship\, a grappling of sorts\, with her identity as an Israeli-American. Betsy Jolas\, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday\, composed in 1983 as the fourth piece in a series of nine that showcases solo instruments. It was one of the first solo works to explore the capabilities of the tenor saxophone\, an instrument primarily associated with jazz and pop music. Even now\, over forty years later\, the piece remains compelling in its modernist lyricism and idiomatic virtuosity. \nGermany-based Duo Tesserae present a program exploring contemporary voices connected through Germany’s vibrant new music scene. Featuring works by Rebecca Saunders\, Thuon Burtevitz\, and Eric Wubbels\, the concert traces distinct approaches to sound\, gesture\, and musical form. \nBurtevitz’s richly textured sonic imagination\, Saunders’ refined exploration of timbre and silence\, and Wubbels’ intricate rhythmic energy reveal contrasting yet complementary perspectives on contemporary composition. Together\, these works showcase an international artistic dialogue\, where composers of different backgrounds have shaped and reimagined contemporary musical practice. \nWith its characteristic precision\, clarity\, and vivid sense of colour\, Duo Tesserae guides audiences through a landscape of striking contrasts\, inviting listeners to experience the rich diversity of contemporary musical expression. \nPROGRAM \nBetsy Jolas: Épisode Quatrième (1983)\nNoa Even: Herzl (2021)\nThuon Burtevitz: Rabba in Sard… (2004 rev. 2015) – Mov. SUMMARY:Sound House : Anna Johnson \, iiisa\, Addison Rider
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented with The Low Pass. Sound House returns at an all new location! Each performance takes place in a different room.\nAnna Johnson:\nAnna Johnson unites electroacoustic improvisation with backgrounds in medieval folk traditions and sacred music. Based in drone and hypnotic repetition\, she is invested in vocal expression as a portal to somatic and emotional presence. Anna’s performances often integrate projection installations of her textural film work\, and her approach to live art is ritualistic: she seeks embodied and communal experiences of vulnerability and spiritual catharsis. She is drawn to the meeting points between personal and mythical\, present and ancient.\nAnna is based in Chicago and tours regularly in North America and Europe. She originates from Minnesota\, where she was raised with Celtic and Anglo folk traditions and sacred choral music\, and studied both Western classical as well as traditional Eastern European polyphony. She holds an MFA from the Performance department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA in Studio Art from Macalester College. Anna’s debut EP Unknowing was released in 2025 on UK label Industrial Coast and her debut LP Swarm of Tongues releases fall 2026 on Somnimage. She was awarded an Outer Ear Session at Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studio in spring 2026 for a recording project\, and selected as a finalist for National Sawdust’s 2026 Hildegard Commission\, which will culminate in a December 2026 concert featuring a performance of her compositional work by Trinity Choir and the National Sawdust ensemble.\niiisa:\niiisa is the electroacoustic solo project of NYC-based latinx improviser-composer\, isabel crespo pardo. Merging field recordings\, poemsongs\, and familial voices from their home in Costa Rica\, iiisa builds memory portals for the kindling of transformation. With a “pliable and fearless voice” (I Care If You Listen)\, they deftly guide the listener through ephemeral vignettes. Their work has been presented by Roulette Intermedium\, Big Ears Festival\, and Pioneer Works\, and their debut album will be released in Fall 2026 on Leaving Records.\nAddison Rider:\nAddison Rider is a Philadelphia-based composer\, performer and multimedia artist. Her work builds around the idea of perceptual intimacy\, inviting listeners into musical environments that feel observant and inhabitable rather than strictly analytical. She aims to write music that breathes\, music that offers sincerity\, music that understands. Drawing on her background as a rock musician and songwriter\, Rider’s output ranges from acoustic and electroacoustic works\, to improvisatory electronic performance\, and film and media scoring. Her recent projects engage with subjects of mindfulness\, found sound\, indexicality\, meaning-making\, faith\, queer identity\, religious deconstruction/reconstruction\, and PTSD.\naccessibility: the performances will be taking place in multiple rooms requiring the climbing of stairs.\nThis venue is a sober space

He was an integral part of the cadre of inventive musicians involved in André 3000’s seminal New Blue Sun\, and has partaken in numerous collaborations with musician/producer/all around luminary Carlos Niño\, who will join Mercereau at Solar Myth. \nEven before those notable efforts\, Mercereau was heavily immersed in the Bay Area Music scene circa 2006-2012; toured extensively with legendary drummer Sheila E; and has lent his craftsman’s touch (as a producer\, songwriter and player) to recordings by artists as prominent and disparate as Leon Bridges\, King Princess\, Lizzo\, Jay Z\, The Weeknd\, Shawn Mendes\, No ID and Sade\, Tom Misch\, John Legend\, P!nk\, and A$AP Rocky. His latest release\, Fantastic Thoughts\, offers the latest development in his uniquely cosmic take on “Progressive Music\,” at once paying homage to and transcending the traditional lineages of jazz fusion and prog rock to arrive at what he has called a “Now Zone of Infinite Freedom.” \nFeaturing\n\n Nate Mercereau presents Fantastic Thoughts \n\nNate Mercereau – guitar\nCarlos Niño – percussion\nAustin Williamson – drums

SUMMARY:Blackbox Ensemble Works by Tania Leon\, Morton Feldman\, and Elliott Carter
DESCRIPTION:BlackBox Ensemble presents a program honoring milestones in American history\, culture\, and music: the centennial of pioneering American composer Morton Feldman and the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The program pairs works by Feldman with Elliott Carter’s “A Mirror on Which to Dwell\,” settings of Elizabeth Bishop poems written in 1976 to honor the United States bicentennial. In dialogue with these works is Tania Leon’s “In the Field\,” a song cycle setting of poetry by Carlos Pintado reflecting on the historical landmarks of Philadelphia which\, in the words of the composer\, “reflects the love and respect we all feel for the multiple and diverse communities coming together to create a nation.” \nPROGRAM \nMorton Feldman: Four Songs to E.E. Cummings\nTania Leon: In the Field\nElliot Carter: A Mirror on Which to Dwell \nFeaturing Amber Evans\, Soprano \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nDescribed as “ambitious” by The New Yorker\, the New York City–based BlackBox Ensemble creates immersive\, interdisciplinary\, and site-responsive performances that engage deeply with classical traditions while reimagining them through contemporary lenses\, opening space for new ideas\, collaborations\, and ways of listening. \nBlackBox has presented work at leading museums\, festivals\, and performance spaces across the U.S.\, including the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art\, The Whitney Museum\, Bang on a Can’s Long Play Festival\, National Sawdust\, Roulette Intermedium\, the Clark Art Institute\, the Noguchi Museum\, and PS21. The ensemble has toured nationally and held residencies at universities including NYU\, University of Chicago\, Penn State\, George Washington University\, UC Davis\, University of Richmond\, University of Michigan\, University of Florida\, and San Francisco State University\, among others. Recent highlights include a three-performance run of Speculative Listening: The Sonic World of Julius Eastman\, a program exploring Eastman’s influences curated by Eastman scholar Isaac Jean-François in collaboration with Kyle Marshall Choreography\, as well as The Sound of Space Between Us\, a site-specific outdoor music and dance performance at the Clark Art Institute conceived by flutist Annie Nikunen. \nOur name\, BlackBox\, comes from the many meanings the term holds. In theatre\, a black box is a bare\, flexible space—four dark walls that can transform into anything\, creating an environment ripe for bold experimentation and intimate connection. In science and technology\, a black box is a system with known inputs and outputs\, but the mystery of what happens inside makes it compelling. For us\, we believe music\, as a cultural medium\, lives in that same space—enacting an ambiguous but vital relationship between artistic expression and social life\, where sound\, expression\, and human experience collide in ways that can’t always be explained\, but always resonate. Guided by the spirit of the theatrical black box\, we create programs that invite risk\, innovation\, and connection\, presenting contemporary classical music in ways that feel fresh\, human\, and alive.
