Over these last 11 years\, the band has amassed an impressive portfolio\, playing across the East Coast and Mexico with renowned artists like Reyna Tropical\, Las Cafeteras\, and La Santa Cecilia. They headlined Philly’s Latin Punk Fest\, the Porchfest Afterparty\, and performed sold-out shows at the Mann Center\, World Café Live\, and as a featured artist with Journey Arts. \nThe musicians of Interminable create a singular blend – bandleader Ximena Violante on vocals\, electric guitar\, and jarana\, a guitar-like Mexican instrument. \n  \nEntrance to the garden is fully accessible.

SUMMARY:World to Come 2: Infra Dig
DESCRIPTION:We are presenting a series of free\, en-plain air public performances which tap into the unique musical forms of Creative Music (a genre rooted in Philadelphia history through John Coltrane and Sun Ra) and Free Improvisation. These performances will be at Christ Church Gardens. \nFollow @PeoplesMusicSupply on instagram for up to date performance info\, sign up for our email list\, and check out the event schedule at PeoplesMusicSupply.org Infra Dig is a new trio consisting of Bert Harris (bass)\, Rob Paul (percussion)\, and Thomas Patteson (alto saxophone). Taking inspiration from jazz\, creative music\, and global traditions\, their improvisations seek to map out possible worlds of sound and spirit\, from zero gravity to cosmic grooves \n \nBert Harris is an electric bass guitarist and upright bassist who is at home in several genres of music. Current projects include The Afrojazz Collective\, Gumbo Nouveau\, Naru\, String Theory\, Reggae Thunder\, Phillyska Jazz Quartet\, RK$TDY\, Philly Gumbo and Infra Dig. Bert has recorded two CDs with Philadelphia jazz legend Byard Lancaster (Pam Africa and Ancestral Link Hotel). With Philly Gumbo he can be heard on their extended 45 RPM Holy War and their CD Come and Get It. His most recent recording is on Gumbo Nouveau’s CD Seasoned. Bert’s playing ranges from straight ahead jazz\, to reggae\, Cape jazz\, ska\, and free jazz  and his original compositions incorporate those genres. \n \n \nRob Paul writes: I discovered the joy and magic of playing music in high school. I feel fortunate to have grown up in Philadelphia\, where I was exposed to the beauty of jazz and avant garde music. When I was 22\, I became a high school English teacher\, and I am proud to be teaching in the Philadelphia School district 26 years later. This work pulled me away from playing music\, because of the deep commitment I developed for helping young people in my city. My passion for music never dissipated\, and I was hopeful to rejoin the music community in Philadelphia later on. I am forever grateful for the transformative musical mentorship and close friendship I have with legendary jazz saxophonist Bobby Zankel. Bobby has reignited my passion for playing music! I am inspired by mindful artists who love to listen and improvise. Let’s play together sometime. \n \n \nThomas Patteson leads a double life as musician and musicologist. He has explored electronic music through his solo project Notions Department and his book Instruments for New Music (University of California Press\, 2016) on the history of experimental sound technologies in the early 20th century. Since 2019\, he has been performing improvised music with Aaron Pond in the shape-shifting duo project Argyle Torah. In 2021 Thomas began playing the saxophone\, inspired primarily by Ornette Coleman and Kadri Gopalnath. He recently completed The Museum of Imaginary Musical Instruments (Reaktion Books\, 2026)\, and is translating a historical study of improvisation practices in European music. Thomas is a Lecturer in Music at UPenn and Vice President of People’s Music Supply. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Ursula Rucker & Tim Motzer - "Live Off the Floor"
DESCRIPTION:WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 14 MilkCrate Cafe presents a special intimate live show with legendary poet Ursula Rucker creating powerful stories with longtime collaborator & renown guitarist Tim Motzer on Wednesday evening October 14\, 8pm show. Not to be missed. Doors at 7pm \n“From the moment that Ursula Rucker and Tim Motzer first unified their singular magical words-and-music efforts on the historic stages of Philly’s Tower Theater\, opening for the legendarily conscious Nina Simone\, all bets have been thrown off the table. Whether appearing within the intimate confines of a duet setting or something broader (but no less intrinsic and interpersonal)\, the divine cacophonous wordsmith and the clamorous textural guitarist have created tactile\, co-joined waves of nuance and noise\, of beauty\, sex\, strife and solace. Alone they are epic.\nTogether\, Rucker and Motzer are crucial\, an emotional\, intergalactic soulful soundscape too rare and too righteous to miss.” A.D. Amorosi

SUMMARY:Untethered (Paul Giess/Grant Calvin Weston/Timothy Ragsdale)
DESCRIPTION:Untethered (Paul Giess/Grant Calvin Weston/Timothy Ragsdale) \nUntethered is a collective led by Paul Giess (Ropeadope) playing what their drummer\, Grant Calvin Weston (Ornette Coleman\, John Medeski\, Vernon Reid) calls “Spontaneous Creative Composition”. Their most recent album “Grasping for the Moon” was featured as album of the Day on Bandcamp in August 2025. Peter Margasak writes for Bandcamp Daily – “the music is in constant flux\, opening up and tightening\, cooling down and catching fire\, riding stasis and exploding with hyperactive motion.” The group plays a genre crossing style of improvisation that holds a deep pocketed funk next to intimate chamber music and the raw energy of a punk band next to a sensitive ballad. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom. \npeople who pay $25 will receive a free cd-r of a previous show.

SUMMARY:Goldberg Variations John Walthausen - Harpsichord
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present John Walthausen in a solo harpsichord performance at University Lutheran Church. In the 1730s\, Bach summed up his artistry writing for keyboards with a new collection: his Clavierübung or keyboard practice. In this multi volume series for harpsichord and organ\, Bach turns every genre of keyboard writing on its head: suite\, concerto\, overture\, prelude and fugue\, chorale prelude. It is in the fourth book of his Clavierübung that Bach explores variation in what would become one of his most beloved works. Exhausting the depths of embellishment possible from a simple ground bass\, Bach challenges the interpreter through thirty variations comprising some of his most virtuosic keyboard writing and some of his most intricate exploration of canon. \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST \nJohn Walthausen has been heard across Europe\, North and South America\, and Asia as a keyboard soloist and ensemble artist. Accomplished as a recitalist in both Baroque literature and contemporary keyboard works\, Walthausen has concertized throughout the world in Paris\, New York\, Washington D.C.\, Chartres\, Bogotá\, Toulouse\, Hamburg\, Milan\, Treviso\, Innsbruck\, Tokyo\, Basel\, and Zurich. From 2015 to 2016\, he served as Organist in Residence at Sapporo Concert Hall in Hokkaido\, where he performed and recorded on the Hall’s four-manual organ by Alfred Kern and in cities across Japan. In 2016\, Sapporo Concert Hall released his debut disc\, “De Fil en Aiguille.” \nA Philadelphia resident\, Walthausen appears regularly as a collaborative artist in his home city\, as well as throughout the East Coast and the Mid-Atlantic region. In 2019\, he co-founded the ensemble Filament with baroque violinist Evan Few and viola da gamba player Elena Smith. In 2022\, they recorded their debut album of the Sonatas Opus 1 of Dietrich Buxtehude\, Alchemy of Another\, called by Fanfare “artistically satisfying on all levels.” \nIn 2012\, he won first prize at the Pierre de Manchicourt International Organ Competition in Béthune\, France\, a competition devoted particularly to North German music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries\, featuring an international jury chaired by Michael Radelescu. In 2009 he was awarded first prize in the American Guild of Organists’ Regional Competition for Young Organists. \nWalthausen earned his bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College\, and in 2011 he gained admission to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris. There he studied organ with Olivier Latry and Michel Bouvard\, earning a master’s with highest honors (mention très bien). In 2015\, he studied harpsichord with Jörg-Andreas Bötticher and organ with Lorenzo Ghielmi at the Schola Cantorum of Basel\, Switzerland where he was awarded a Master’s in Historical Performance. In 2024\, Walthausen served as Artistic Director for the first edition of the Philadelphia Organ Festival\, a week-long event sponsored by Partners for Sacred Places. In addition to his concert appearances\, Walthausen currently serves as Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Germantown\, Philadelphia\, PA.

SUMMARY:Alash
DESCRIPTION:Alash: \nAlash are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. Trained in traditional Tuvan music since childhood\, and trained by legendary Tuvan musician Kongar-ool Ondar\, the Alash musicians studied at Kyzyl Arts College just as Tuva was beginning to open up to the West. They formed a traditional ensemble and won multiple awards for traditional throat singing in international xöömei competitions\, both as an ensemble and as individuals. At the same time\, they paid close attention to new trends coming out of the West. They have borrowed new ideas that mesh well with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music\, but they have never sacrificed the integrity of their own heritage in an effort to make their music more hip. \naccessibility: ramp into lobby\, then 7 stairs into theater

Map \nEstimated run time: 120 minutes\nDistance: approx. one mile\nTerrain: ADA accessible\nFree admission – reservations are encouraged\n \nABOUT THE EVENT \nFollow the Sound is a communal outdoor listening experience that combines a guided nature walk with live music. Each ambulatory program is attuned to the here and now of its site — birds\, bugs\, water\, and wind — creating a moment of shared awareness and presence. \nFollow the Sound events are free and have been hosted at various sites throughout the Philadelphia area including John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum\, the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education\, Stoneleigh: a natural garden\, and more\, each led by a naturalist with expertise of the local ecosystem. \nEach ~90-minute program entails walking a distance of less than one mile\, usually on flat\, accessible terrain. A wide range of diverse musicians have participated on an array of flutes\, electronics\, violins\, viola da gamba\, and more\, in solo and impromptu duo formats. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nSalina Kuo is a singer/songwriter\, percussionist\, self-taught guzhengist\, improviser and educator based in Philadelphia (Lenape territory). They have a deep admiration for black American music\, world folk\, free improvisation\, and 60s/70s fem singer/songwriters. They write music that blends genres and utilizes uncommon instrumentation to create a unique yet cohesive and familiar sound. By confronting personal experiences with grief and depression\, Kuo’s storytelling invites listeners into their world and share in their healing. They release music under St. John’s Wort (vibraphone indie/rnb/soul) and River Full of Fruit (freak-folk chamber ensemble). River Full of Fruit’s “Only the Earth” release show will be 11/12 at Asian Arts Initiative. St. John’s Wort’s debut album is forthcoming. \nAndy Thierauf is a Philadelphia-based percussionist specializing in the creation and performance of contemporary music. His work is driven by a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration\, frequently integrating percussion with theater\, dance\, and technology to create immersive and innovative performances. He is an active member of Arcana New Music Ensemble\, NakedEye Ensemble\, Network for New Music\, and Orchestra 2001\, among other ensembles in the Philadelphia area. In addition to his performance career\, Andy serves as an Artist Teacher of Percussion at The College of New Jersey\, is on faculty of Settlement Music School and is Adjunct Professor of Percussion at Kutztown University.\nwww.andythierauf.com \nIn Color Birding provides an entry point to birding for BIPOC communities in and around Greater Philadelphia. The organization believes that everyone should have safe\, joyful\, and rewarding access to green spaces and the practice of birding. In Color Birding is an inclusive environment for those traditionally marginalized to increase their connections to and appreciation of the natural world through bird walks\, presentations\, funding of transportation costs for classrooms\, teacher mini-grants\, and visits to local sites.\nwww.incolorbirding.org \n

SUMMARY:The People United Will Never Be Defeated! - Heather O'Donnell piano
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present pianist Heather O’Donnell performing Frederick Rzewski’s iconic work The People United Will Never Be Defeated! 36 Variations on the Chilean Song ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido! at Trinity at 22nd. \nPROGRAM \nFrederic Rzewski (1938–2021)\nThe People United Will Never Be Defeated! (1975)\n36 Variations on the Chilean Song ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido! \nABOUT THE PROGRAM \nFrederic Rzewski composed The People United Will Never Be Defeated! in 1975\, creating one of the monumental works of twentieth-century piano literature. The hour-long cycle consists of thirty-six variations on the Chilean song ¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!\, composed by Sergio Ortega and associated with the years surrounding Chile’s 1973 military coup. Over time\, the melody came to symbolize solidarity and the enduring human desire for dignity and self-determination. \nCommissioned for the United States Bicentennial\, the work was premiered by Ursula Oppens at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington\, D.C.\, on 7 February 1976. \nRather than presenting a straightforward set of variations\, Rzewski transforms the song through an extraordinary range of musical languages – from counterpoint to jazz\, minimalism\, improvisation\, virtuosic display\, and moments of profound stillness. The result is a work that continually shifts between the individual and the collective\, certainty and doubt\, struggle and renewal. \nAlthough rooted in a specific historical moment\, the piece has long transcended its original context. Today it is regarded not only as one of the great masterpieces of contemporary piano literature but also as a meditation on resilience\, memory\, freedom\, and the enduring capacity of communities to imagine a different future. \n– H. O’Donnell \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nHeather O’Donnell is an American pianist\, psychologist\, author\, and founder of The Green Room\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the mental health and professional sustainability of performing artists.\nAs a pianist\, she has appeared throughout Europe\, North America\, Asia\, and the Middle East as recitalist and concerto soloist\, performing with ensembles including the St. Petersburg State Symphony\, the Romanian State Philharmonic\, the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra Leipzig\, and the Tanglewood Festival Chamber Orchestra. Her performances have been broadcast by Deutschlandradio\, Radio France\, Deutsche Welle Television\, and other international media. \nInternationally recognized for her commitment to contemporary music\, O’Donnell has given more than thirty world premieres\, including works by Luciano Berio\, John Zorn\, Walter Zimmermann\, and James Tenney. She is the dedicatee of compositions by Michael Finnissy and Frederic Rzewski and received First Prize and the Gaudeamus Prize at the Fifth Krzysztof Penderecki International Competition in Kraków. Her artistic projects have included the commissioning initiatives Responses to Ives and Piano Optophonique\, and she appeared in Alexander Kluge’s cinematic interpretation of Karl Marx’s Das Kapital. \nFollowing a career interruption caused by injury\, O’Donnell completed degrees in psychology and redirected her work toward the wellbeing of artists. She holds an M.Sc. in Prevention and Health Psychology\, is a certified Artistic-Systemic Therapist (DGSF)\, and has become an internationally recognized voice on musicians’ health\, creativity\, identity\, and sustainable artistic careers. \nShe has lectured and presented at institutions including Weill Cornell Medicine\, the University College London-hosted Performing Arts Medicine Association Symposium\, Columbia University\, the Eastman School of Music\, the Max Planck Institute for Human Development\, and the Mozarteum University Salzburg. In addition to her clinical work\, she serves on the Board of the European Network of Cultural Centres (ENCC) and is the author of the forthcoming book Being a Musician: A Life Told in Failures and Renewals.

DESCRIPTION:Please join Ars Nova Workshop at Solar Myth on October 18 for a special closing-night performance by saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins and his extraordinary quartet\, presented in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Philly Music Fest. \nFew artists embody the creative spirit of Philadelphia as profoundly as Wilkins and this ensemble. Together\, the quartet has emerged as one of the most vital and emotionally searching groups in contemporary music—melding deep lyricism\, collective improvisation\, spiritual intensity\, and fearless experimentation into a singular sound that feels both urgent and timeless. Rooted in Philadelphia yet resonating internationally\, their music reflects the very values that Philly Music Fest has championed for a decade: community\, risk-taking\, generosity\, and the transformative power of music.
