SUMMARY:Treatise Revisited
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird presents Arcana New Music Ensemble in a second performance of Cornelius Cardew’s landmark graphic score Treatise at The Rotunda. \nLast November the ensemble performed about 20 of the score’s 193 pages. This year they take on a different set of pages\, with the score projected so the audience can follow along. \nAbout Treatise\nTreatise has no instructions\, no specified instrumentation\, and no set duration. Across its 193 pages\, a line runs above two empty staves\, and around it Cardew placed a vocabulary of shapes. Some pages suggest clefs\, staves\, and note heads\, and others give way to curves\, solid black dots\, and forms with no musical precedent. Any number of pages can be performed\, by any number of players. Realizing the score takes discussion and interpretation\, and no two performances sound alike. \nCardew worked on Treatise from 1963 to 1967\, after his years as Stockhausen’s assistant and while working as a graphic designer. His encounter with John Cage and David Tudor in 1958 had already pulled him away from European serialism toward indeterminacy\, and Treatise pushed that further than the New York School had. The title nods to Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus\, whose economy and rigor Cardew admired. The score was first published in 1967 by The Gallery Upstairs Press in Buffalo\, New York\, and in 1971 he wrote the Treatise Handbook\, a set of working notes on its composition and early performances. His most quoted line on the piece: \n“The sound should be a picture of the score\, not vice versa.” \nWithin a few years Cardew had renounced the avant-garde and its notation\, but he never withdrew Treatise from publication. It remains the best-known graphic score ever made. \nArcana New Music Ensemble\n\nNicholas Handahl\, flute\nNoa Even\, saxophone\nMelinda Rice\, violin\nCarlos Santiago\, violin\nAlyssa Almeida\, cello\nAndy Thierauf\, percussion\n\nAbout Cornelius Cardew\nCornelius Cardew (1936–1981) trained as a pianist and cellist at the Royal Academy of Music\, then went to Cologne’s Studio for Electronic Music as Stockhausen’s assistant\, working on the score of Carré. After the Cage and Tudor concert in 1958 he turned to indeterminate music\, producing The Great Learning and Treatise. In 1966 he joined the improvising group AMM\, and in 1969 he co-founded the Scratch Orchestra\, which brought trained and untrained musicians together under a “reverse seniority” ethos. \nIn the 1970s he turned to explicitly political music\, populist\, Marxist\, and Maoist in outlook\, and wrote the polemic Stockhausen Serves Imperialism. He died on December 13\, 1981\, in a hit-and-run accident; the driver was never found. \nAbout Arcana New Music Ensemble\nFounded in 2015\, Arcana is a Philadelphia chamber ensemble that presents contemporary classical music in unconventional places. It performs works by living composers and revisits music of the past\, often by overlooked composers. Arcana is known for portrait concerts\, which explore a composer’s work in depth by pairing widely recognized names with those who are lesser known or historically underrepresented.

SUMMARY:MANAS & Totally Automatic
DESCRIPTION:MANAS: \nTashi Dorji: guitar \nThom Nguyen: drums \nChe Chen: guitar\, percussion\, homemade instruments \nMANAS was formed in 2012 in Asheville\, NC by guitarist Tashi Dorji and drummer Thom Nguyen. The intensity of their live shows\, characterized by Dorji’s angular guitar preparations and Nguyen’s multi-limbed maelstroms exploding outwards in parallel\, immediately caught the ear of the underground. Originally from Bhutan\, where he absorbed American and UK hard rock and heavy metal via bootleg cassettes while surrounded by a family full of folk musicians\, Dorji arrived stateside for college and immersed himself in Asheville’s DIY punk scene and formative listening sessions with records by Albert Ayler\, John Coltrane and Derek Bailey. It was there that he met Nguyen\, a Vietnamese-Mississippian transplant who had been playing in local free rock outfits Nest Egg and Mendocino. The two hit the ground running\, funneling their love of grindcore\, black metal\, free jazz\, noise and other extreme sonics\, and burgeoning anarchist/mutual-aid politics into their newfound freedom in improvisation. Relentless woodshedding and touring on both sides of the Atlantic has long since solidified their reputation as an undeniable live act\, and their post-hardcore take on improvised music has found them space on bills and collabs with Nepali grindcore band Chepang\, heavy music headliners SUMAC and Godspeed You! Black Emperor\, and free improv musicians like Joe McPhee\, Susie Ibarra\, Zoh Amba\, Audrey Chen and countless others. Multi-instrumentalist Che Chen (of 75 Dollar Bill) has been a longtime friend of the band and frequent collaborator over the years\, and now joins MANAS as second guitarist/aux percussionist. His guitar can be foil or twin to Dorji’s own\, while his battery of small percussion and homemade instruments is able to refract Nguyen’s multi-directional rhythms\, or create wholly other textures. \n(MANAS photo by Barry Weisblat) \nTotally Automatic: \nTotally Automatic was formed by Anne Ishii\, Eugene Lew and Matthew Smith Lee in the summer of 2021. They play unarranged music with each other\, on drums\, saxophone and electronics\, and can be found around Philadelphia. \naccessibility: The entrance on the 48th Street side of building is wheelchair accessible via a street-level lift. Please contact us in advance if possible to arrange access.

SUMMARY:Water Can Assume Any Form
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present Matthew Levy at The Rotunda for a record release concert of music for tenor saxophone and electronics. \nMatthew Levy — founding member of the world-renowned PRISM Quartet — steps out as soloist for a record release recital celebrating his ongoing exploration of music for tenor saxophone and electronics. The concert takes its name from James Primosch’s Water Can Assume Any Form\, the beloved Philadelphia composer’s final\, unfinished work — Levy completed its second movement at Primosch’s request\, weaving his improvisation into his late friend’s soundtrack “with the hope of channeling his ideas into my own\,” in what Levy calls “our most poignant collaboration.” \nThe program features three works from Levy’s latest album alongside two previously recorded works: Emma O’Halloran’s Sum of Its Parts\, recorded for XAS Records — the piece that launched this whole electro-acoustic project\, built from samples of Levy’s own playing — and Nicholas Cline’s Water Witching\, written for saxophonist Jeff Siegfried and recorded by Levy for Navona Records. Across the evening\, composers have recorded\, synthesized\, and reimagined elements of Levy’s own playing — subtones\, growls\, multiphonics\, percussive articulation — into fantastical electronic soundscapes he then performs against\, live and often improvising\, in real time. \nAlso on the program is Erin Busch’s can’t find the words\, a work of sublime delicacy written by Levy’s colleague on the Temple University faculty. Each piece treats the saxophone-and-track format differently — from intimate memorial to abstracted meditation on water and land. Amid that electronic backdrop sits the one fully acoustic work of the night (also written for Levy): Paola Prestini’s Where the Blue Wave Rocks\, a Kandinsky-inspired meditation on color\, connection\, and communication\, offering a moment of unprocessed clarity within the program. \nTogether\, the compositions form a portrait of an instrument — and a performer — at the intersection of technology\, memory\, and imagination. \nProgram\n\ncan’t find the words (2019/2026) by Erin Busch\nWater Can Assume Any Form (2021) by James Primosch\nWhere the Blue Wave Rocks (2006/2020) by Paola Prestini\nWater Witching (2015) by Nicholas Cline\nSum of Its Parts (2018) by Emma O’Halloran\n\nAbout the Artist\nSaxophonist\, composer\, curator\, producer/engineer\, and educator Matthew Levy has made an enduring contribution to contemporary music as co-founder and executive director of the world-renowned PRISM Quartet\, and as a collaborator with other artists and ensembles for more than 40 years. Matt has been hailed by The Saxophone Journal as “a complete virtuoso of the tenor saxophone” and by The New York Times for his “energetic and enlivening” performances. He is the recipient of fellowships from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage\, the Independence Foundation\, and the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. He has scored four motion pictures\, including PBS’s Diary of a City Priest\, featured at the Sundance Film Festival. \nMatt has recorded for Albany\, BCM+D\, BMOP/Sound\, Deutsche Grammophon\, ECM\, Grammavision\, Innova\, Koch International\, Navona\, Naxos\, New Dynamic\, New Focus\, Orange Mountain\, Tzadik\, and XAS\, which he founded in 2016. People’s Emergency Center\, a critically acclaimed double album of Matt’s original music that spotlights guest artists Jason Moran\, Rudresh Mahanthappa\, Tim Ries\, Ben Monder\, Jay Anderson\, and Bill Stewart was described by PopMatters as “9 Stars\, Best Jazz of 2014…too big to fail” and by WRTI as “magic with swirling precision.” \nA member of the Network for New Music Ensemble\, Matt has premiered solo works by Emma O’Halloran\, Paola Prestini\, Nick DiBerardino\, Renee Favand\, Jacob Walls\, Erin Busch\, and David Ludwig; collaborated with a host of choreographers and dance companies\, among them Nai-Ni Chen Dance Co.\, Philadelphia Ballet\, Peter Sparling\, Scrap Performance Group\, and Group Motion Dance Theater; and appeared as a guest artist with the Philadelphia Orchestra\, Detroit Symphony\, Dolce Suono Ensemble\, and counter)induction. \nHis work with PRISM has included tours of China\, Russia\, and Latin America; concerto appearances with the Cleveland Orchestra and Dallas Symphony; and recital performances presented by Carnegie Hall and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He serves on the faculty of Temple University Boyer College of Music and Dance where he maintains a robust saxophone studio\, is a member of the Producers & Engineers Wing and Songwriters & Composers Wing of the Recording Academy\, and performs exclusively on Selmer saxophones.

SUMMARY:Marta Sánchez
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Madrid\, Spain\, pianist and composer Marta Sánchez is actively working in the contemporary creative music scene in New York City and around the globe. Charting a significant path through her innovative and original music\, she has reached an international audience and earned broad critical recognition. Sánchez has released four acclaimed albums with her quintet in addition to the 2024 trio album Perpetual Void. She also tours and records with the David Murray Quartet\, is a regular member of groups such as the Oscar Noriega Quartet\, the Maria Grand Duo\, and the Webber/Morris Big Band\, and has worked as a sidewoman with artists including Sara Serpa\, Immanuel Wilkins\, Emma Frank\, Terri Lyne Carrington and many others. \nSánchez released her debut solo piano recording\, For the Space You Left\, earlier this year. Long daunted by the prospect of solo performance\, she found her voice through experimenting with piano preparations. For The Space You Left is the result of years of exploration and experimentation\, successfully distilling the signature compositional elements she utilizes for quintet and trio into a single instrument\, and through entrancing rhythmic loops and melodic counterpoint creating something uniquely her own. Writing for The Vinyl District\, Joseph Neff hailed Sánchez’s solo pieces as\, “gripping\, life-affirming excursions that should please any fan of top-flight piano science.”
