SUMMARY:Portrait of Jessie Montgomery
DESCRIPTION:Curtis New Music Ensemble celebrates composer-in-residence Jessie Montgomery with a concert featuring works by the Grammy-winning composer\, violinist\, and educator. Praised as “turbulent\, wildly colorful\, and exploding with life” (Washington Post)\, Montgomery’s music fuses classical with vernacular styles\, improvisation\, poetry\, and social consciousness—offering a profound reflection of 21st-century American sound. \nA winner of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence\, Leonard Bernstein Award\, and Musical America’s 2023 Composer of the Year\, Montgomery explores themes from social justice to the Black diasporic experience with remarkable depth. The program opens with Concerto Grosso\, a bold reimagining of the baroque tradition where the solo violinist embraces “choose your own adventure” spontaneity. It concludes with Musings for two violins\, inspired by Bartók’s 44 Duos for Two Violins and honors composers like Bach\, Hindemith\, and Vivaldi. This captivating evening showcases Montgomery’s dynamic voice in modern classical music.

SUMMARY:Tatsuya Nakatani & Arcx Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Tatsuya Nakatani: \nTatsuya Nakatani is an avant-garde percussionist\, composer\, and artist of sound. Active internationally since the 1990s\, Nakatani has released over 80 recordings and tours extensively\, performing over 150 concerts a year. His primary focus is his solo work and his large ensemble project\, the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. He teaches master classes and lectures at universities and music conservatories around the world. Originally from Japan\, he makes his home in the desert town of Truth or Consequences\, New Mexico. With his activity in new music\, improvisation\, and experimental music\, Nakatani has a long history of collaboration. \nNakatani’s distinctive music centered around his adapted bowed gong\, supported by an array of drums\, cymbals\, and singing bowls. In consort with his personally hand-carved Kobo Bows\, he has spent decades refining and developing his sound as an arrangement of formations of vibrations\, incorporated in shimmering layers of silence and texture. Within this contemporary work\, one can still recognize the dramatic pacing\, formal elegance and space (ma) felt in traditional Japanese music. \nArcx Quartet: \nArcx Quartet guides listeners on an audio trip through hallucinogenic trancepts\, foldable shadows and metonymic nebulae\, skirting the boundaries of Arcx’s labyrinth collective sound-mind. Arcx Quartet seek to find truths/untruths within ever-present interstitial spaces. \nFor this occasion Arcx Quartet are Carlos Santiago– Violin\, Matt Engle + Dan Moser – Contrabass and Thomas Kraines– Cello. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom.

SUMMARY:Chris Speed Yeah NO with Cuong Vu\, Skúli Sverrisson\, Jim Black
DESCRIPTION:n March of 2000\, Ars Nova Workshop hosted the first of what would become hundreds of performances across Philadelphia\, presenting saxophonist Chris Speed and his creative quartet yeah NO at Plays & Players Theater. Much has changed in the ensuing quarter century. Speed has returned to perform for ANW many times in the ensuing years\, most recently as a member of the acclaimed trio-turned-quartet The Bad Plus. After more than two decades as a nomadic organization\, Ars Nova finally found a permanent home at Solar Myth in 2022. \nSo it’s a unique thrill to celebrate Ars Nova’s momentous 25th anniversary\, albeit a year late\, by bringing Speed and yeah NO back to Philadelphia. The quartet\, which teamed Speed with trumpeter Cuong Vu\, bassist Skulli Sverrisson and drummer Jim Black\, was the saxophonist and clarinetist’s first venture as a leader\, emerging from his groundbreaking work as a member of two now-legendary ensembles\, Human Feel and Tim Berne’s Bloodcount. At the time\, LA Weekly hailed Speed’s music as “one of the freshest and most attractive newer strains in jazz — moving\, driving\, blending\, shaking and evaporating in glassy plumes.” A welcome reunion\, to be sure.

SUMMARY:Audra
DESCRIPTION:Bowerbird is pleased to present Audra performing an evening of music for voice and saxophone\, with repertoire including Meredith Monk’s Hocket for Two Voices\, two moody folk-song arrangements by Karin Rehnqvist\, and Cecilia McDowall’s dramatic White Fox Woman. Three pieces make up the center of this program: Thomas Kessler’s Is it?\, Philippe Leroux Un lieu verdoyant\, and Gelsey Bell’s Aviatrix. All three treat the voice and saxophone like a hyper-instrument\, creating a new\, hybrid sound out of the two performers. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nNoa Even (saxophone) and Anika Kildegaard (voice) are Audra\, a genre-defying new music duo exploring the dynamic interplay and sonic intersections between soprano voice and saxophone. Their debut performances in early 2025 included the Spotlight Series at Rowan University (NJ)\, No Exit presents in Cleveland (OH)\, and the Fuse Factory in Columbus (OH). This season’s performances include the Andrea Clearfield Szalon\, Harrison Township Historical Society concert series (NJ)\, 2640 Space in Baltimore\, and Bowerbird in Philadelphia.

DESCRIPTION:Crystalline\, minimal and dissonant\, The Days Pass Quickly Immersed in the Shadow of Eternity is a new composition for sampled and live early flutes in 8-channel sound by Lea Bertucci. Steeped in folkloric influences\, this work is a haunting contemplation of time\, duration and memory that evokes the primeval and futuristic simultaneously. SUMMARY:Takaat & Heavenly Bodies
DESCRIPTION:TAKAAT: \nTAKAAT (pronounced tuh-cot)\, meaning “noise” in the Tuareg language Tamashek\, for this tour is the duo of Ahmoudou Madassane & Mikey Coltun (joined by a blown out drum machine). Also known as the rhythm section of Mdou Moctar. TAKAAT is sonic chaos\, improvisation\, freedom of exploration\, and the punk styles of bands such as Fugazi and Unwound\, all mixed together with the guitar music from the Sahel. \nTAKAAT started during soundchecks while on the road with Mdou Moctar when they indulged their shared love for amps cranked to 11 and the sound of blown out speakers. Towards the end of 2023\, they started writing music together\, inspired by their shared experiences with the sounds and energy of Hausa bar bands\, gritty soukous\, and 2000s post-punk. The music of TAKAAT is intense\, dark\, and energetic. Deeply inspired by the DIY ethos of punk\, they capture that thrill of the new and the ecstasy of togetherness in these heavy rockers. TAKAAT follows in the spirit of the independent music culture that birthed hardcore basement shows\, bedroom tape labels\, and generator-powered pick-up wedding bands. \nHeavenly Bodies: \nHeavenly Bodies are an ever evolving psych experiment hailing from Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania\, with a revolving cast of musicians and instruments centered around the core group of Ashley and Dustin Burrows and Shaun Bailey. \naccessibility: The entrance on the 48th Street side of building is wheelchair accessible via a street-level lift. Please contact us in advance if possible to arrange access.

SUMMARY:Amir ElSaffar New Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Composer\, trumpeter\, santur player\, vocalist\, and bandleader Amir ElSaffar has been described in the New York Times as “the celebrated trumpeter and composer who explores vital connections between jazz and Arabic music.” ElSaffar leads a number of critically-acclaimed ensembles: The 17-piece Rivers of Sound Orchestra; Two Rivers\, which combines the musical languages and instrumentation of Iraqi Maqam and contemporary jazz; the Amir ElSaffar Quintet\, performing ElSaffar’s microtonal compositions with standard jazz instrumentation; Safaafir\, the only ensemble in the US performing and preserving the Iraqi Maqam in its traditional format; and The Alwan Ensemble\, specializing in classical music from Egypt\, the Levant\, and Iraq. In addition\, he has worked with jazz legends Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp\, and prominent jazz musicians\, Danilo Perez\, Mark Dresser\, Gerry Hemingway\, Marc Ribot\, Henry Grimes\, and Oliver Lake. \nElSaffar’s New Quartet brings together his trio – consisting of Tomas Fujiwara\, one of NYC’s most in-demand and dynamic drummers\, and Ole Mathisen\, a tenor saxophonist of unparalleled technique and versatility – with Greek pianist Tania Giannouli\, a rising star who has headlined almost every major jazz festival and venue in Europe over the past several years. ElSaffar’s nuanced and vibrant trumpet sound\, rooted in Chicago school classical technique and combining subtle ornamentation and microtones of Arab Maqam with Jazz influences ranging from Miles to Woody Shaw\, guides the ensemble into unexplored musical territories. Their music ranges from intensely quiet and nearly silent to ecstatic and declamatory\, with the microtonal piano ringing ear-opening and beautifully unconventional harmonies throughout. \n\nAmir ElSaffar — trumpet\nTomas Fujiwara — drums\nOle Mathisen — bass\nTania Giannouli — piano\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Alex Harding & Lucian Ban duo
DESCRIPTION:Alex Harding & Lucian Ban duo: \nThe relationship between Alex Harding and Lucian Ban has been long and fruitful. Their combination of elements of improvisational music have helped the pair develop a unique musical language that transcends the expectations of the jazz genre. \nPianist Lucian Ban arrived in New York City from Romania to study at the New School in 1998. As he first began to immerse himself into the local scene\, Ban was fortunate to hear baritone saxophonist Alex Harding. The two hit it off immediately and formed a fast friendship leading to musical collaboration. This led to Ban providing a handful of songs for Harding and Harding becoming an essential voice on Ban’s recording debut on their co-led album\, Somethin’ Holy (CIMP\, 2002). It was Harding’s unique voice that attracted Ban\, one that had also captured the ears of many legendary collaborators\, including Sun Ra\, Muhal Richard Abrams\, and Julius Hemphill. Harding’s heartfelt and blues-drenched baritone sax playing lent well to Ban’s open-minded and improvisatory approach to music. Harding’s visceral style lent an edge and authenticity to their music\, a sound and feeling anchored in the blues that Ban came to the States to try to discover and absorb. Their communion was a true celebration of the spirit\, as both found something in the other to help free their spirit in performance. Harding was essential in introducing the young pianist to the luminaries of the jazz scene\, including Sam Newsome\, Nasheet Waits\, Brad Jones\, and the incredible tuba player Bob Stewart. These relationships have been long lasting and essential to the pair’s musical development. The music that they created leans into the blues\, in feeling\, sound\, and color. The tones are mysterious yet rooted. Occasionally speaking to early traditional sounds of jazz but the use of Fender Rhodes giving a contemporary\, Afro-Futurist meets new music tint. As Alex Harding and Lucian Ban’s musical partnership has grown\, the pair have been able to incorporate elements of their musical backgrounds into an intriguing and singular sound. \naccessibility: two steps from street to venue. \nPlease note\, entrance is via the side door on Arizona Street.
