SUMMARY:Morton Feldman: Three Voices Charlotte Mundy\, voice
DESCRIPTION:Feldman’s “Three Voices” was written for the experimental vocalist and composer Joan LaBarbara in 1982. The original concept involved the live performer singing along with two pre-recorded parts projected through on-stage amplifiers\, creating an effect of three individual “voices”\, all with the same origin (Ms. LaBarbara). Three Voices is indeed a challenging and ground-breaking work\, and has very rarely been performed live with three singers due to its nearly impossible demands on the human voice and psyche – impeccable rhythmic concentration\, shrewd attention to tuning\, and the ability to sound as one voice in three parts. The text is based on Frank O’Hara’s poem\, Wind\, and shapes\, twists\, and morphs short phrases from the poem into an hour-long musical experience. \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST \nCanadian soprano Charlotte Mundy has been dubbed a “daredevil with an unbreakable spine” (SF Classical Voice)\, and “mesmerizing” (New York Times). As a founding member of TAK ensemble\, “one of the most prominent ensembles in the United States practicing truly experimental music” (I Care If You Listen)\, Mundy has performed at Lincoln Center and the Library of Congress\, premiering works by Tyshawn Sorey\, Erin Gee\, Eric Wubbels\, Brandon Lopez\, and Natacha Diels. Mundy is also a core member of Ekmeles\, described as “beyond expert – almost frightening in their precision” by Fanfare magazine and recent recipients of the Ernst von Siemens Ensemble Prize. \nMundy’s recent projects as a soloist include site-specific opera Newtown Odyssey by Kurt Rohde and Marie Lorenz; premieres of concert works by Alyssa Regent and Aida Shirazi\, and the debut of a new collaborative multimedia project with Christian Quiñones. Past performances include critically acclaimed renditions of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire\, Boulez’s Le Marteau sans Maître\, Feldman’s Three Voices\, George Benjamin’s Into the Little Hill\, Iannis Xenakis’ Akanthos\, and a set of music for voice and electronics presented by New York Festival of Song\, described as “an oasis of radiant beauty” by the New York Times.

SUMMARY:Max Johnson Sextet
DESCRIPTION:Max Johnson Sextet: \nComposer\, bassist\, and improviser Max Johnson presents his brand new sextet in the premiere of “Without Fear\,” a new concert-length work performed alongside Anna Webber (tenor saxophone\, flute)\, Yuma Uesaka (soprano saxophone\, clarinet)\, Nate Wooley (trumpet)\, Lester St. Louis (cello)\, Max Johnson (double bass)\, and Jeff Davis (drumset\, vibraphone). The piece is a sprawling\, style-blurring composition that explores the many musical worlds Johnson has inhabited over the past fifteen years\, weaving together elements of jazz\, chamber music\, folk music\, free improvisation\, and progressive rock. \nThe work draws from Johnson’s experience as an in-demand performer and prolific composer\, having performed internationally and recorded with artists such as Anthony Braxton\, Geri Allen\, the Daedalus Quartet\, David Grisman\, Tyshawn Sorey\, Mary Halvorson\, Mivos Quartet\, and several alumni of Frank Zappa’s bands. Conceived as a musical ecosystem where diverse influences coexist and interact\, “Without Fear” highlights the individual voices and abilities of the ensemble while bringing Johnson’s expansive musical vision into a single personal work. \nAs a lover of comic books\, the piece is inspired by the Green Lantern\, whose power ring can create anything imaginable through sheer force of will\, so long as its bearer remains without fear. Like the ring itself\, the work imagines a creative space where the many musical languages Johnson inhabits can live together within a single composition. \naccessibility: space is on the second floor up a flight of stairs.

SUMMARY:Paolo Angeli
DESCRIPTION:Paolo Angeli: \nSardinian musician Paolo Angeli’s professional career was spent deep in the avant garde\, exploring post-rock\, experimental opera\, and more. His style was influenced heavily by that of guitarist Giovanni Scanu\, who was a major proponent of the classic Sardinian canto a chitarra style. The combination of inputs inspired Angeli to create his own instrument: an 18-stringed hybrid of guitar\, baritone\, violoncello\, and drums\, adorned with hammers\, pedals\, and even propellers operating at various speeds. Working closely with craftsman Francesco Concas\, Angeli created an instrument that enables an altogether new type of performance combining\, referencing\, and transcending free jazz\, folk noise\, and minimal pop. \n“Paulo Angeli is a musical conjurer\, an artist whose imaginative leaps defy gravity. A composer\, ethnomusicologist and instrument builder who draws on his deep knowledge of traditional Sardinian music\, he inhabits a timeless zone as a soil-rooted master and brash experimentalist. While suffused with Mediterranean cadences\, Angeli’s original pieces encompass flamenco\, jazz\, Baroque\, post-rock and new music. He plays a prepared Sardinian guitar of his own invention\, a fantastical 18-string hybrid combining elements of guitar\, cello and drums. \nA feast for the eyes as well as the ears\, Angeli in full flight is an astounding sight\, as he bows\, strikes\, hammers\, plucks and strums an instrument with strings going in all directions and foot-pedal-controlled motorized propellers. With sympathetic strings creating shimmering drones\, he adjusts tunings on the fly to create exquisitely lapidary\, orchestral music using electronic effects in real time (he eschews loopers\, creating every sound in the moment). \nIt’s not surprising that this singular musician has improvised and collaborated with masters such as Pat Metheny\, Fred Frith\, Evan Parker\, Zeena Parkins\, and Phillip Greenlief. Angeli’s music may be unclassifiable\, but it takes no expertise to recognize its strange and extravagant beauty”-SF Jazz \nvenue is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Marisa Anderson
DESCRIPTION:Marisa Anderson’s music transcends borders. The topography of her work interrogates the intersections of artistry and expression with form and tradition. A singular guitarist and voracious musical collaborator\, Anderson crafts pieces bursting with equal parts reverence and curiosity\, contouring familiar shapes into work that is wholly her own. Anderson has spent decades mining the veins of the complicated\, interconnected American folk traditions she was steeped in from a young age\, stretching beyond those traditions and incorporating the vocabulary and techniques of vernacular and folk musics from across time and beyond boundary into her work. Eschewing replication or revival\, Anderson’s music lives in conversation with tradition. “My approach to tradition is with the hands that I have and the history that I have\,” notes Anderson. “In that way it’s a collaboration–you don’t go into collaboration trying to play like the other person\, you go in trying to find out how to play together.”

SUMMARY:Kalia Vandever
DESCRIPTION:Kalia Vandever is a Grammy Award-winning trombonist and composer based in Brooklyn. Their approach to the trombone is distinctive and defined by their sonorous tone and lyrical improvisational voice. They lean into the challenges of the instrument and allow patience and melody to guide their process. In their compositional practice\, Vandever draws from their love of songs and improvisation\, creating a landscape of sounds that resonate in the body and hold the listener. \nWriting for WBGO Jazz\, Nate Chinen said that Vandever’s 2022 sophomore album Regrowth “confirms [their] strengths as a composer and bandleader with a distinctly contemporary point of view.” (Nate Chinen\, WBGO Jazz). 2025’s Another View featured the stellar cast of Mary Halvorson\, Kanoa Mendenhall and Kayvon Gordon and was praised by Downbeat for “its entrancing\, cyclical rhythms and longing melodicism.” At Solar Myth\, Vandever will be taking another bold stride forward in their ongoing creative evolution.

SUMMARY:FUJIllllllllllTA
DESCRIPTION:FUJI||||||||||TA is a Sound Artist living in Japan. His unique practice utilizes various natural phenomena that respond to his interest in wanting to hear unheard sounds and unknown sounds. Instead of playing a composed piece of music\, he aims to go as far as possible towards his own unknown state of being\, with an emphasis on observing the sound closely. \nIn 2009 Fujita hand fabricated a Pipe Organ that has only 11 pipes and no keyboard. Fujita conceived and built it using his imagination\, without any prior or specialized knowledge. The air pump (called “FUIGO”) which is kept moving by the left hand when playing\, and is based on associations with an ancient blacksmith. This unique instrument is too delicate in its nature to be played properly without a great deal of experimentation and trial and error. Fujita has spent a long time inventing ways to play it and experimenting with ways to utilise this instrument in sound systems.

SUMMARY:Fred Frith & Walnut Brain
DESCRIPTION:Fred Frith: \nFred Frith is a pioneer of the extended electric guitar. He learned to compose in \nHenry Cow\, developed his song-writing skills in Art Bears\, explored his multi- instrumentalism in Skeleton Crew\, rocked the house with Massacre and is still doing all of those things\, having been in one band or another continuously since 1964! Meanwhile his work has been performed by both Baroque and contemporary music ensembles\, along with string quartets\, chamber orchestras\, and a whole range of groups and artists in the ever-expanding field of semi-popular music. Fred composes extensively for film and dance\, and taught improvisation for years at Mills College in Oakland\, California and the Musik Akademie in Basel\, Switzerland. His life-long passion for improvising has increasingly led him to work with artists who don’t necessarily define themselves as improvisers\, including Brazilian drummer Mariá Portugal\, cellist Paula Sanchez\, and bricoleur extraordinaire Sudhu Tewari. Fred is the subject of Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzels’ award-winning film Step Across the Border. \n“if (you) haven’t seen Fred improvise solo\, (you) must. Just to see him live\, it has to be done. It’s one of the wonders of the world.” —Marc Ribot \n“Fred Frith is a great drummer.” —Miles Davis \n“Frith should be sellotaped to Derek Bailey and pushed off a cliff.” —Skelidude\, YouTube \nWalnut Brain: \nWalnut Brain\, the duo of Alina Josan and Steve Heise\, mess around with a custom-made diddley bow and an electric guitar to make decidedly earthbound sounds that reach for the clouds or the stars or whatever’s out there. A diddley bow is an instrument whose single string\, when struck and bowed by a sensitive player\, emits sounds that both scrape and sing. As we all know\, an electric guitar is a juiced up instrument capable of producing some of the most exciting sounds imaginable. In the intuitive hands of Walnut Brain\, these instruments weave together to oscillating rhythms and fleeting melodies. \naccessibility: street level entrance to venue but two steps to restroom.
